    1) Pay attention
    2) Read the card
    3) Understand what your cards actually do
    4) Don't get salty. It's just a game.
    5) Use your opponent's turns to figure out what you want to do so that you can act quickly on your turn

Speaking of politics and deals, I had a fun interaction with another guy at my LGS recently. We made a deal that if he used his removal on someone else, I wouldnt attack him on my next turn. What neither of us considered was that I had Battle Angels of Tyr out at that time.
When it came around to my combat step, I went to attack with BAoT and realized that I would create a myriad token that would hit him. Luckily he was super chill, and after a short discussion we decided the funny answer was that because the myriad token came in tapped and attackING, I technically didn’t attack him per game rules, and thus it did not break our deal. It was a fun game

The issue with 2-land hand is often, that even if you do draw your third land on time... you now just have the same issue with your 4th land drop and your fifth.
So many decks will just falter if they're stuck on 3 or 4 lands for even just a couple turns, especially if you're going third or last. Like you missed your 4th land drop and play whatever and immediately after your turn, your opponents are already on their fifth land drop. Then it's your turn again and you draw that 4 land drop "yeah, finally!" and it goes back to your opponents and they play land #6 and it's just kind of over for you if the decks are reasonably strong.
For me, even 5 land hands are easy keeps if they have some early game action going on. People are like "but what if I get flooded?" and it's like... the opposite odds of being land-screwed, only the odds are actually in your favour. At roughly a 2/5 of your deck being lands, you have a way higher chance of not drawing that 3rd, 4th and 5th land than me whiffing on spells when 3/5 of the deck is non-lands AND I have my commander waiting to be cast in the command zone. People throwing away decent 5-land hands are silly.

You might be on to something about the reverse mana flooded odds.

    • @yoyoguy1st
      @yoyoguy1st 27 дней назад +2

I think people run far too few lands in general. More games of magic are lost due to mana screw than they are flood, especially with MDFC’s, mana sinks and in commander you always have your commander like you said.

    • @paulszki
      @paulszki 27 дней назад

@@yoyoguy1st Yeah, I'm not uncomfortable at anything under 37 lands, often times I'm just running 40 lands, especially since 1-3 lands are MDFs anyway.
And in green there's by now tons of 1 mana green spells that let you dig for land if you need it and for non-lands or creatures if you don't. They're kind of MDFCs in disguise.
Brother's War "Bushwack" is SO good for one green. Either looks for a basic land or it's a fight spell.

Mulligans are super interesting and nuanced. I agree with you that more aggressive mulliganning is probably good advice for most people. However, there are cases when it's better to mulligan less. Typically, if a game is lower powered, or if your deck is slower or likes to go under the radar, or if your opponents are slower, then it can be better to just have more cards in hand, even if that means maybe missing a land drop or two. It's all about knowing your deck and (preferably) your opponents' decks too!

When putting in a tutor in a deck, you should already know what you are wanting to tutor for. Tutors should be put into a deck for a purpose, and should almost always be used for said purpose. In my atla palani deck, which is the only deck i have tutors in (seriously, tutors arent necessary in all decks), i have artifact and enchantment tutors to search for a sac outlet. I have a couple creature tutors meant to look for cards like mirror entity or one of my creatures with an artifact tutors stapled on. If you dont have a card for your tutor to look for, you probably dont need it in the deck.

I almost entire agree. In my casual decks I still play tutors, but I play 4+ cost tutors or restricted tutors. Like fabriate, transmute and moonsilver key for example. However, generically have a tutor in any deck is always strong because its a 3rd or 4th board wipe while also being a color fixer and also a draw engine or a path to exile. Its too strong to have a wild card to not include it rather than JUST for consistency purposes

One of the "deals" i like to make isn't to protect myself, but to cause aggro with 2 other players.
For example, if I don't want to be attacked by player X this turn, I'll instead offer them something like using a card draw ability on them or allowing them to choose my spot removal target in return for them attacking player Y right now.
This both means they won't be attacking me and also that player Y will make player X enemy number 1. It shifts aggro from my board and sets the enemy of my enemy against each other.

For kitchen table / totally casual Commander games, I'm a big fan of Sheldon's mulligan rule: instead of a full shuffle back then draw a new grip - just set your first draw aside, then draw another 7. If you get at least 3 lands, roll with whatever you get. I like leaning into the RNG of the game a bit more, which is why I don't run tutors (outside of really specific synergy with a deck / Commander and fetch effects for basics like Sad Robot).

    Ehh,
I’m fine with something like, “If you don’t attack me, I won’t cast Damnation this turn.” (Opponent then gives all creatures -5/-5, accomplishing the same thing a Damnation would have.)
If, OTOH, an opponent goes, “I won’t kill your Haste-having Vorinclex, Monstrous Raider Commander you just brought out, if he’s not coming my way this turn.”
(Only to then cast Swords to Plowshares on Vorinclex, then try to argue that creatures which are exiled never “die,” so my Commander actually wasn’t “killed?”)
That’s a Focus Down cassus belli, IMHO.
Being deceptive and resorting to game technicalities, *when both parties clearly understood that wasn’t the frame of the negotiation that took place* are two different things to me.
The first is part of EDH’s fabric. The second is seeking justification to break a deal you always intended to break.
It’s certainly not cheating, but it will put you on the, “In case of three board states I either don’t feel threatened by, or feel equally threatened by, I will always attack the Bad Faith Bargainer.”

FIne print deal making is part of the reason I don't do deals in commander. It's lame in my opinion, and I'd prefer to win with my cards rather than by having my opponents help me.

I'm calling these hyper-specific political deals the Command Zone Effect. JLK was the first gameplay creator I noticed to start "getting" people, and ever sincd it became part of the games culture. I think because the Command Zone normalized it that it became accepted, not that it was a natural occurance. The first time I was tricked, because it is a trick, I was salty. Every new player will experience it and it doesnt feel good. Youll learn quick but it adds an element to politics that you alwayd have to look out for and people WILL exploit it. Ive also been tricked by destrot vs exile deals thinking the ultinate deal is my creature being left alone. Because of the Command Zone Effect when someonw gets tricked, the general sentiment is symoathetic to the exploiter. The benefit is that immunity deals ARE boring and this encourages more unique deals. But there is merit in the argument against tricking people, which is exactly what this is to ve hyper specific about one thing to get them somewhere else. The Command Zone Red Herring Deal.

The BEST skill in commander is to realize it's commander, it's a bullshit format and means nothing. Then, you suddenly save money and stop the "arms race" by not giving a you know what. Now, THAT is winning.

So commander players should start their magic journey by playing not commander and learning the fundamentals before being tossed into bullshit politic magic?
Yea I've known that for years and the lack of proficiency in the avg commander game is the main reason I dont play the format.
I get it people just want to chill with their friends and thats always a blast. But commander with people who dont know the basics is literally insufferable.
Want to stomp every commander "power 7" or below game? Just run like 10+ nonland permanant board wipe and ramp your way to unkillable threats/engines. Most commander players literally cant beat that.

Only one skill is necessary: combo faster than the rest of the table.

When you're the threat, stfu about being attacked.
Past a certain point, you're just trying to manipulate another win by making the table feel guilty for targeting you.
It's shitty human nonsense. Stop it.
