- Tokyo is loaded with museums, hundreds of them from art to science. If normal museums are a bore to you or you want to try something new, let me tell you about this place! The TOKYO MUSEUM OF SEWAGE!
Here, you'll spend the day learning about Tokyo's sewer system, how it works and even get a chance to go inside the main sewer pipe suspending on a platform over the free flowing raw crap.
Perfect for families -- or maybe for the second or third date with someone special :) either way, Kodaira city is a really relaxing place to hang out, a few really cool cafes and restaurants near the station.
Best of all, this experience is free!
What are you waiting for?

How to get there:
Take the JR CHUO LINE from Shinjuku to KOKUBUNJI STATION (14 minutes).
Change to the Seibu Kokubunji Line for 2 stops to TAKANODAI STATION.
Exit TAKANODAI STATION and take a left. You will see a sign for the museum at the small bridge. Use the Google Map for reference.
This show has been created and produced by John Daub ジョン・ドーブ. He's been living and working in Japan for over 18 years and regularly reports on TV for Japan's International Channel.
John, you have taken the concept of "inside Japan" to a whole new level.
- Alan
Right!?!!!!?!
That's what I thought, LOL.... ^^
My Life Japan
My Life Japan
heyy its like my ma always told me go big or get the frig out!
What goes into sewer? - Toilet, bath, sink, laundry. You guys forgot Mario...

nice one!
mahamudra mahamudraa
This is also similar to the sewage museum in Britain and how proud they are of building such so are the Japanese . Another great video from OnlyInJapan !
Japan is really the best at marketing and tourist spots. Where else in the world would a museum of sewage exist?
There is a another sewer museum in Paris.
aww i love how they made an anime version of the bacteria
Shame about not having the boat ride installed, maybe next time.
Microorganism pokemon...gotta collect them all?
Can't wait for yours and Joseph's next bathroom adventure.
XD lol
can you go to the cup noodle musuem and make a video about it?
I love that idea!💗
Because your noodles will finish there, in the sewage :D
that sounds like a great idea for a video id love to see it
Found the perfect place to visit on my trip to Tokyo on August!! Can't wait
I love how Japan makes everyday things seem so exciting and important! XD
The way he described it is so funny, even though, he was trying to sound calm lol
Hello, I am Japanese.
I visited this place yesterday.
It is amazing that you were able to stay in the sewer pipe for such a long time.
I was only there for 1 minute.
Thanks for the great introduction video.
Japan is life
Life is Japan
+MrDirtBaggins Yaaas
weaboo?
+Rayed No. They only admire Japan.
Joseph looks different without all those cherry blossoms on him :P Another great video - thank you for sharing this with us, John!
That guy looks like a Star Trek character.
That's why he's freaking AWESOME!
Glad he didnt die then. What witht he red shirt and all.
Sounds like one of them too
He is
The sewage of Japan is like a magic
Love this channel John ! You're awesome Japan is awesome !! Love from India !!!
Greetings from Tokyo \(^o^)/ Thank you!! Means a lot to me! -John
Museum of sewage? That was new John, lol....
At least it didn't make me hungry as many of your other videos usually does. ^^
Great work !!!!!
Thomas
Thank you Thomas! I tried to change it up a little but THIS ONE was sort of a big change, huh? hehe
Always appreciate hearing from you my friend. -John
A big change, but a good one, and original for sure. It can't all be UFO catchers and sushi, right?
Yea! If you get hungry, then watch this one and your hunger will suddenly vanish...
What are you doing up at 4:34 AM?!?! Watching a video about poop....and what happens to it.... *mom shuts door slowly.....* I'm thankful I can't smell through my TV..
If you click the time, the guy says "WE MADE THE SEWAGE MUSEUM!" lol
doing the same thing here lol
It's being UPLOADED and finished now. Not to say he's UP
Good thing Smell-o-vision isn't readily available to experience that waterfall at it's fullest! I wonder how many visitors they get each month...
Read my comment better! I was talking in a third-person. Not about John. Also if he's in Japan it's most likely he's up at that time since I'm in US right now.
I got to visit the sewage treatment plant for my area a while ago, so its pretty cool seeing the first part of the "journey" Japanese style!
I love how you show us things that would be considered "mundane" about Japan - things you don't normally get to see much of! But then you do a great job of making it really interesting! Hats off to you, sir!
Bro. I love your videos and your demeanor!!! You have a great styled presentation style and love the places you go!
please more ideas and I'm ready for daily updates!!!!
The fact that Japan is a sewage museum is really really cool. It's clearly education. The toilets are fascinating as it is so this is cool to see as you said "the back end" of it all.
Thanks for sharing such an 'authentic experience' with us, OiJ Team!
I was at a store in Michigan in the U.S. They had one of the hi-tech toilets. I've never obsessed over a toilet before. Lol. I truly love your videos, I've learned so many things from you.
haha Tokyo really has everything ^-^. Great video John!
That was cool and very interesting! Thanks John! Hope you are staying dry during the monsoon season!
i swear this channel and John should be on TV! Such amazing work!
now off to the flower video :>
A breath of fresh air ... (thank goodness!) -john
I was chuckling about the sewage flow right up until the videos of the water rushing through near the top.
Then I wasn't so amused.
Every time I use toilet, I'll remember this video😂
1minute Traveller : hahahha and I always laugh everytime I go to toilet 😂😂😂
Very interesting videos. I've only been to Japan a few times but always found it fascinating
This is my favorite channel! Every video is creative and well done! I hope I can go to Japan one day.
Thanks to this video I went here to check it out. You're right, it was actually more interesting than I expected it to be. And yeah, it stank. But not as bad as I was thinking it would.
I watch these videos to learn something new about Japan and to learn english language.
I toured my local sewage treatment plant on Long Island, NY a few years back. It was very interesting aside from the smells of course. I learned there was a successful experiment to create a tertiary filtration that would allow the water to be sent right back into homes in sinks instead of being pumped three miles out into the Atlantic to alleviate the burden on the local aquifers. Alas, the consensus was that though it was perfectly clean and filtered water, the idea of sending cleaned urine back to the citizens directly wouldn't sit well with the populace and was scrapped.
I've also had the experience of going all the way down to see the flow of raw sewage. My god, that smell..
Thank you for another amazing episode! I enjoyed the dynamic between you and Joseph and I especially liked the classroom bits with the micro-kaiju!!
What an experience! Yes, the smell ... but I was surprised it wasn't worse actually. Yeah, it's weird to think of sending this stuff back to the people but everything we eat and drink is really sent back in one way or another. I try not to think about it but this episode didn't help that. Haha! -John
Oh my...that scene from the storm and the water reaching the door was really scary haha. I was surprised that they didnt give you any mask because of the smell so I guess it wasnt that strong after all :D
It's really not as bad as you'd think. It's not what id want to smell for more than a few minutes but it won't kill you. Just don't fall in! -John
ONLY in JAPAN Hahah yeah it would end up very bad if you fall.
They have a sewage museum?? Honestly japan you're weird but thats a fucking great idea. This is way better than the low tier art museums
I know, right? They also have a parasite museum in Meguro, Tokyo I hear. -John
since there is raw sewage does cooked sewage extist? or what I'm confused xD
Thats really cool, i love they actually have a classroom with camera microscopes. Well done Japan
I dony understand how ur only on like 445k subs your videos are mint
Great video... as always can't wait for the next one.
This would probably be a civil engineer's dream to see how a sewage works from the inside from a first person prospective. I think they also have something similar in America but you don't really get to tour the inside of the sewages though. But this is quite amazing to watch really. Not just for civil engineers but for anyone who wants to know how everything works.
That is what struck me when I stumbled upon this place. I actually went to interview an artist who had an exhibition here (episode coming soon on that ;) just amazing that they allow you to go inside and have a look at how it works. -John
japan make microoganism look like anime to easy sleep at night..nice one dude
A boat in a sewer? Great idea, I love the idea of actually being up sh*t creek without a paddle. XD
Thank you for all these videos! My fiance and I are headed to Japan for our honeymoon next year and your channel has given us some incredible ideas for planning
So working as a water/sewage plant operator(small town so I get to do both drinking water and wastewater treatment) this is really interesting maybe more so than to most and you do really get used to the smell
Great video as always. Is the video of the pipe filling up with water on RUclips?
This is very informative! thanks again John!
Well, I just learned my first Kanji character accidentally watching this video. I've been learning Japanese lately so I've been paying careful attention to any Japanese writing I see, but I haven't started Kanji yet.
When are the times/days you normally post
I can't wait to see the amusement park one
Dat's da shitz man.
The microorganism made me think of the trash compactor scene in the original Star Wars.
It's because of things like this that I remember why the channel is called "Only in Japan" lol
again you fail to dissapoint me john great video! keep em comin
I Love Your Videos John Japan Is wonderfull
First thing that came to my mind when I saw this episode is the Shawshank Redemption xD
Great episode as always John! Cheers!
Well, that museum is actually pretty intresting to be honest. xD Oh! I also have a suggestion! Can you tour Shueisha gallery and office and tell history and all about it if possible, because i'm very VERY huge fan of Weekly Shonen Jump and other Jumps comics even Japan release ones! I could be a really happy than ever if you could make video about it! But keep going anyway and show me more what i don't know what's only in Japan! :D
We have a place almost exactly like this in Philadelphia it's pretty cool. The Only difference is, our water isn't running its just old sewer pipes that they stopped using over half a century ago.
JOHN I LOVE YOU!! AWESOME SERIES
10:03 - Well, that flushed the system clean, at least...
:P
I'm leaving for Japan tomorrow
Happy trip :D I love Japan and one day am gonna go there too!
Have a great time!
Dam lucky

Oh my god, I love you and your titles. >.
Yay I'm early ^o^ love your videos
Why were you gone for so long ? You were the premier maker of Japan Tourism videos!!!
I was away from the area filming. I traveled to Shikoku and Tottori prefecture at the start of the month. Now I'm visiting family in the USA and trying to edit the next show. Busy busy! -John
This is my favorite RUclips Channel
It's like Charley and Chocolate Factory, but with poop!
Same color~
Wow, another great video, John. Truly fascinating. Disgusting, no doubt (especially the microorganisms), but really interesting. You definitely took one for the team with this one. lol
And that boat ride through the sewers? That would be like a water park ride for the Ninja Turtles, but I think I'd pass. ;-P
Please do a video on Japanese candy stores or some of the strangest candies . Loved the video great job John
I have watched all of your videos, *Deep Voice* ONLY IN JAPAN, and I have to say I really enjoy the overall flow of the program! Also this episode has some pretty chill background music. Way to go. Not going to lie though not really feeling Joe Tame.
Japan should really do a boat ride in the sewers
Now when I play Super Mario I will have a whole new respect for the game.
I cant wait for the next video!!!
Don't go chasing waterfalls
Well at least not these!
Love this channel! Malaysian fans here
oh i love this episode it's interesting
Oh wow! This is certainly something only in Japan xD But this whole museum seems super well-done and very educational : )
Me and my friends are in tokyo just now. Come for swedish midsummer celebration in yoyogi park, saturday daytime! :)
When they have the special exhibit on fatbergs, I'm sure you can bring Peter there.
John, please tell us the name of the music used throughout most of this video. It's incredible! Thank you!
Beach Disco - Dougie Wood
How oddly fascinating! :)
5:35 You might not know it but the door is there to keep the skaven out.
Its already july 4th. Are you posting the q and a video?
Hi John, I have a plan to go to Tokyo this august. can you give me a recommendation place in Tokyo? thx before
It'll be really crowded. I highly recommend Shibamata if you like traditional Japan ... they have great street food there and it's more peaceful. Odaiba is nice, sitting on the decks at night overlooking the city. There is WAY TOO MANY to feature here!! I don't think you can go wrong with anyplace you go if it is your first time. -john
i can't DOODOO this anymore!!
Love this show!
oh man i love japan tho and i love this channel keep it up
Interesting! By the way where do you work in Japan? What is your source of income?
I still think John Daub looks like Daniel Larusso (Ralph Macchio) from the Karate Kid.
Can you please make the videos in 1080p? I don't like watching it on TV and its pixelated
It is in 1080p HD. I confirmed this now.
You may have it on auto setting and if your wifi is weak, it will download a lower resolution version.
I don't like watching pixelated TV either. -John
Also confirmed....
On my IPAD via WIFI The best i can Manage is 720p HD but on my main Machine with 120/30 i get 1080p. I'm gonna check my settings
Thanks.
+ONLY in JAPAN have you ever thought of doing 360 degree video so we can see everything
+Someone named Grell I have! This wouldn't be a good topic for it. Haha! ... or would it? -J
Hello John
Can you tell me when you will upload the next video ?
Thank you
In 24 hours ;) shh! Don't tell anyone yet. -John
I really like all ur videos.Could u mind if u make video for reading train maps and get the ticket? For ex.from one statio to other station.Because all ur video help me travelling o Japan.Thank u so much
Oh man id love to troll people as that guy with the glass of raw sewage using a mug of coffee.
Nothing like going to the museum of numbers twos
Lol at "Don't jump the fence". What did they do for sewage in the 60s if this was built in 1970?
Bringing along the god of toilets with you again
Hey john, can you make video about Shirakawa-go ?
Thanks
