Urich jr you are amazing!!! Thank you
What an absolute legend. Thanks a lot mate!! :)
Thank you!
The last 10 minutes show you how this man has gotten where he is today.
So funny.... Steve Vai being "Bad Enough"... Still a great scene, KUDOS!!
Really cool to stumble upon this.. just ordered into Synergy today. Syn2 with slo and ac
Man that was an awesome interview
I find it so revealing (and its a big re-assurance) that I work just like Steve. Recording snippet, because I forget them. Review later, use some for a new song that gets produced and release on my records. If you are mostly on your own, you just don't know. Because of these open, frank interviews, we know. That's cool. Thx Steve, Marc, Dave!
I watched this during the livestream, one of the best Tone-Talks, but isn't every new one the best one?! Steve Vai is an amazing guitarist, composer and musician and one of the big influences on me when it comes to picking up the guitar and using it as a compositional and musical tool! Steve is always soulful, I love how he describes the musician's journey, where music comes from and what it's all about! So inspiring...thanks for sharing you guys! Of course I'm going to have to watch it one more time! 😎🎸
Amazing Human Being~ Steve Vai.
I router'ed out below the Tail of Trem & Drum sanded the Horn's
Back in the Day Because of Him & Green Meanie
God bless Steve Vai!
You guys hit it out of the park with this one. Maybe your best show yet. Vai is an outstanding guitar payer and an even more outstanding human being. I absolutely love this show!
Awesome episode. Thank you Tone Talk!!
Mention of Terry Bozzio... Killer drummer back in the day!!
What an absolutely phenomenal show... **STEVE VAI!!!!** You guys totally rock...thanks so much for your high-caliber channel...love it!!! 💗💗💗
Not gonna lie, never expected to see a guest the calibre of Steve Vai on the show, that’s incredible. Well done fellas! This channel should have 700k subs instead of 7k. Criminally under appreciated. Keep it up, though 🤘🏼
John O'Mary Thanks! We hope to keep providing great guests and content!
Nice!
He doesnt like the Marshall sound... makes sense that he gravitated to the darker bogners and carvin legacy etc.. great for violin leads but not so clear for rhythms
He doesn't like Marshalls but he likes Ed's tone?
Recently I saw a clip on RUclips where he is playing Marshall Amps. Go figure.
So agree... Firstly Dave's creations can dial up most any spectrum of tone... But for a Handwired amp, modern or classic voicings, and a TIGHT low end, if desired, Dave's amp rule
This Vai kid could really go places if he sticks with it
😂😂
Loved this. Hearing Steve and Dave talk about the Jose Arredondo Marshalls 1:03:00 onwards was my favourite part!
Somehow, I think Steve would really dig the variable negative feedback control on Dave's BE-50 Deluxe and BE-100 Deluxe amps...send him a new amp or two Dave when you work on his Jose Marshalls!
I've always felt there was a bit of a rift between Vai and EVH... Steve went to the point of using the Arredondo Marshalls, having his own modified Charvel supertrat (Green Meanie), playing with his old singer, doing that Hot for Teacher ripoff video (The Audience is Listening)... Of course they're going to be political about it, but IDK... Throughout the interview he gets all serious when asked about anything related to EVH and calls Eddie "Edward" all the time - doesn't call Joe Satriani "Joseph" or Billy Sheehan "William", though, lol. When asked about DLR's new band, Eddie would always reply "Billy Sheehan is a badass". Not fooling me.
This was really educational and entertaining. Really enjoyed.
4 thumbs down = 4 losers.
Hey this doesn't really mean shit to you but it is an example of how small the world is. I grew up in Paradise CA (You may have heard about us because last year the town burned to the ground in the "Camp Fire") well I grew up with Wayne Charvel"s two identical twin boys, Ricky and Bobby and I have to say Steve I absolutely love you and your music but these two. I have no words. they can effortlessly play you, Satch, Page, Clapton, Petrucci, Michelangelo, it just doesn't end.
A lot of Grover's guitars are in museum's now thanks to Steve Via
Metal Dad And Randy Rhoads too
Steve Vai is another level in pretty much everything.
Freaking unbelievable show (as always)!!! Kudos Dave and Marc, you guys bring it every time!!! Steve Vai is such a unique person and player, so much respect. I also loved the message about making do with what gear you have! Also seemed so humble about playing the other artists music and paying homage to them, yet putting his twist and characteristics in there. I'll show my age, but back in the day, Guitar Player Magazine use to put those flimsy square shaped vinyl records (about the size of a 45) in their magazines. I still have that old flimsy record from the magazine that contained Steve Vai's "The Attitude Song" from October of 1984! Thanks for the great show guys!!! \w/
1:01:10 Response to amps used on DLR tour
The best Vai Interview I have ever seen..Loved this..thanks for sharing Tone-Talk..!!!..
I had an Acoustic G100T modded by Jose that was stolen twice & twice recovered!. LA sucked in the 80's...
Losing that amp took the wind out of my sails...
Ry Cooder has some chops, no?
Big Trouble... The funky hollow aggressive attack on that song still hangs on me today...
IMHO, Eat 'em & Smile was a HUGE influence on me!!
It might be super vee trem setter
Awesome thank you Tone-Talk Steve Vai is the Best this is the best guitar show on RUclips thank you Marc and Dave
Gear are tools, for musicians to find their voices in that moment, a lot of people don, t understand that, who aren, t musicians.... Even I understand as a drummer..hahaha..;)
That's funny! They start the video talking about my country. It's great that they like where I live. being a so small country in Europe :) By the way, I'm from Madrid.
Marc and Dave Thank You for this! Steve Vai is a humble down to earth genius. I was captivated👃
@ 1:40:00 he starts to unwind some of the greatest adVAIce he can deliver. So epic. Thanks a bunch gang for this fantastic , epic transmission !
Hi there. I have a question for Steve Vai . This is something that I always wanted to know. It’s about Rhythm Guitar- In the 80’s when Glam Metal or Glam Rock was big another style of Metal took off mainly in the States- This was a Different World of Music- The sound was a Lot Harder, Heavier, Faster, More Intense and Extreme- The Thrash Metal Speed Metal scene. What are his thoughts on that Genre from a Riff or Rhythm Guitar point of view. Please get this across to him and yes I’ve always been a Fan of his playing be it the David Lee Roth Band, Whitesnake , the Vai Band with Deven Townsend and the Solo Stuff - CHEERS 👍
This episode was killer!!! Nicely done gents!!
it's great to hear vai's shitty iphone jams. lol.
As a dude with 7 RGs, including a 7-string, I would like to thank Steve Vai! I want a pink JEM one of these days, and a 7-string Universe.
Was that the years I saw ya many times? Orange Grove & such? I always walked away thinking "I could never, yet I could" in trying to do VAI stuff. You made it so personal....
Great Show As Always Marc 💥 Steve 💥David 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻🎶🎶🎸
Love the shows but Marc needs to bad off his gain a bit. Your loud bother man.
Gary Owen thanks and we are working on it. Sorry
There's the portion of the interview that discusses upgrades to locking tremolos, for example the brass block. I've considered it but never followed through. In over 30yrs of playing, the day came when i cranked up the mids on my amps, and, all of sudden, the guitars were sustaining for me like never before!
48:45 Green Meanie Discussion
I love the latest spread of all three screens, BTW. Cool to occasionally slip in a living legend to TT. More, please. :-)
I like this show and everyone involved. Steve said something about waiting for the universe to show him a melody. But who made that universe? The universe is just a thing, like rust or broken glass or a decaying leaf. The Big Bang Theory says: first, there was nothing at all, and then it exploded.
I’ve watched the entire interview but took me three days and I somehow missed this according to what others have said. Can someone link the time stamp to where Steve talks about his Jose modded Marshall’s please?
Brent Pearcy try 1:01:11 story of amps he used with DLR
Tone-Talk Thank you Marc, tone talk was a genius idea, great work my friend. I would love to see Joe Bonamassa sometime and also Reinhold Bogner
Thanks man! Hope to one day!
Steve Vai is definitely a City guy if he doesn't want to explore the world with a car!
Über is A to B travel and you can't really be spontaneous or head into the outskirts. Long road trips and exploring places randomly can be fun.
Watched this live!! Loved it!
Guitaes were made by the people, for the people., not this again. Reading my intinuary
lol at the reaction when Steve said Moscow has incredible music stores ..."oh... interesting". Love you Steve
No more Carvin amps in the guitar room anymore? Why doesn’t Synergy get a license for the Carvin amps? Or Carvin could make their pedal preamps into racks that will fit into a rack
VoxPathfinder15R the new synergy module is basically Steve’s legacy tones in the module.
Tone-Talk is it being licensed from Carvin, or did another amp builder work with him?
"In Alcatrazz you know a strat ain't gonna cut it" - certain Swede might disagree with that.
What an amazing video, Steve is a mountain of knowledge that I could listen to for hours and a great human being and I'm glad that I got to finally watch it all.
2:04:00 great advice - so many times, I've allowed non-ideal sound to spoil my experience and consequently, my performance
Yo Dave, the hair colour took 20 years off ;-)
I saw Steve Vai in Berlin years ago and there the guitar amps were louder than the PA...
It took me years to figure out I sound and play like me. Doesn't matter what gear I use or things I try.
Why doesn't Edward do stuff like this?
Subbed! Great show
Wow, this was great. Thank you
OK now you have to have ed on the show! :)
watched live been waiting to see this again . very good show thanks and please keep it up
Does vai mention anything regarding a david lee roth band reunion in this? Kinda hard for me to skim through 2 1/2 hours so figured id ask.
Otis Spunkmeyer yes but ya gotta watch :) towards the end
timestamps plz
Great interview! Thank you!
It would be cool if someone is showing something detailed like the trendsetters to just show their screen only so the details can be seen. Thanks awesome as always!
Tremsetters* stupid keyboard lol
Thanks for the suggestion. I’ll try to do that next time
Thanks for this great episode! Where can I find some information on Dave's clinics in France?
Stéphane Bertrand we will get that for you!
volume leval fisrt guy so loud ..pain in the ars
I got my guitar to say, "say what?" 👍
The trem stopper is a Hipshot tremsetter.
one genius and 2 POTATO heads- sorry guys but that's how this interview seemed..
DR. CRANKNSTEIN hahaha and these potato heads thank you for watching. And also try spelling better :)
Dave's a genius in his own right. Look forward to your podcasts.
And at least one "Potato head" watching and making silly comments...just sayin.
Only a moron would call Friedman a potato head
awesome interview guys
enjoyed this video! thanks!
brilliant
Hey Mark, If the Frank Zappa show at the Sunrise Music Theater you are referencing was April 18, 1980, I was there too. I was in high school. I never realized Steve Vai was in the band then. They were also there in 1981 (10/23)
Great show - as always.
The set lists if you are interested are here:

Hey guys! Does anyone knows how it is called and what brand is that "trem setters" (or something like that) Vai is referring at 1:55:24 ?? thx!
Great show as usual! Thank you for sharing this and taking the time to put it together. I really enjoyed the interview!
best inverview so far this year :) #42GSone the coffee starts flowing sept 7th 2019 :)
1:59:29 - I have changed many blocks on many bridges (brass, titanium, fat steel) ... the difference is NOT subtle. It is one of those few things that makes a noticeable difference. My $0.02!
ThemFuzzyMonsters that’s cool. Marc has used them before and noticed some difference.
It's crazy how down to earth he is and nice. I guess it's because he's has a really great life so far.
Yeahh
Steve Vai consumate musician, inspiring. I heard him talk about composing a song using one note, I bet he could record an entire album just using one string!
I love the end of the talk. Steve vai has a way of speaking about music that really inspires me.
Thanks again for the great show 👍
Steve Vai good speaking love that 👍🤘
2:10:39 response to DLR band reunion.
The gigs fell in your lap because you are an extraordinary musician! I equate you to Mozart or Paganini. Musical artists pushing the limits of conventional musical boundaries.
Awe man- look at all of those commercials!😕
Rele Shred! We have to have some support for the channel. Hope you understand and you can pass them quickly
never lend guitar to mr vai...😂 Great episode
How much Carvin gear was in the setup??
To bad they never answered my question about why Steve's JEM has a sustainiac pickup and the production JEM 7V does not
Sorry we couldn't get to all questions in the chat. It's hard to please everyone. Hope you enjoyed the show though.
@@tone-talk Marc it was a great show no doubt but it was perfect timing to ask that question....basically his Sig. JEM is not really a Sig.....I have a 97 JEM with a Ebony board and love it
I would say price. He uses the fernandes sustainer and there are alot of mods to install that. Sustaniac is a far easier install
@@quix99 To add a little under $200 to a $3000 guitar will not make a difference in buying the axe
Gary Z06 ever look into a install for that? Pretty extensive
why is this re-posted?
There was a technical issue and it had to be re-uploaded. Thanks
@@tone-talk Phew! Thanks for the explanation man. 👍
Noisy mouse?
I think DLR David Lee Roth sell's it in His Ink line
(sorry, I'm fullashit….lol)
There was some background noise on the line. Nothing we could do about it and sorry Marc is louder than others. We did the best we can under the Skype tech issues. Thanks for watching.
