That’s not the living room, it’s the den/family room. He walked into the living room to answer the door.

@marifabick9394 They entered the living room from the space off the kitchen through that gap, so OP is right as that is an entry/exit point to the living room.

I reckon in a traditional house hold the area they watch tv in would be a dining room (it was actually used as a dining room in a thanksgiving episode). I assume Charlie being a bachelor didn’t see a point of a dining room as he eats at the kitchen table majority of the time, and even with Alan moving in, and jake part time, there wasn’t necessarily need for a designated dining area.
