easy to hear the difference here huh?....that fireman he's playing is super resonant and the rest of the rig is 'just enough'...nothing over-processed.
I just have to comment on all of this "Paul destroys Steve here" and "Paul played all the 'hard' parts because Steve can't play fast" comments. I am a huge fan of both of these masters. Have been since the 80's. I probably lean a bit more towards PG but that's just a personal choice. To say that Steve can't play fast means you either have'nt seen him live or know his entire body of work. The only ones that see this as a competition are the armchair guitar heroes here on RUclips. Both of these masters have nothing to prove to anyone, especially to each other. They both have carved out their own space in the guitar god universe. If I could only play a millionth of a percent as good as either of these guys would be a dream come true. I'm a total hack at guitar but am totally happy with my ability. I chose to raise a family instead of practicing endlessly and pursue music exclusively like Paul and Steve. My point being BOTH of these guys are better than any of us hacks and are at the level that all they are doing here is jamming together for a great cause. Each of them have more than millions of fans around the world to enjoy their music without becoming a pissing contest on who is better. So just enjoy their different styles and get well Tony! Sorry for the long comment. Just wanted to get that out.
Mario N. A very astute way to look at it. Never thought about it that way. People want to feel they are on the winning side so they make things they aren't directly involved in, into a competition. Especially with something they are most likely no good at themselves.
+TheAxe4Ever Yea 😊like you said they've both more than proven themselves so this is just a bit of fun between two absolute legends. A lot of people will try and bend it to their opinion as some form of self comfort but they sacrifice their own some other's enjoyment of the piece. Just enjoy it 😊
+TheAxe4Ever The probable reason why some people think Steve is slow is probably how Paul Gilbert is more influenced in terms of alternate picking. Nearly all his licks require fast alternate picking. Steve, in the other hand, is more influenced in tremolo related stuff and legato runs despite being very skilled in alternate picking. Most of his licks have at least a few dips and gargles topped off with a few quick bursts of legato. Either way, you're right. Either they have never seen Steve REALLY play or they are just die hard FANBOYS of Paul.
Well said. I like them both a lot. What I will add is that most musicians, whether they know it or not, are searching for their own voice, so if you can hear Vai play and know it's him by his style then he has accomplished what he needed to and speed isn't a factor. If you are only known by the speed that you play then that has less to do with music and more with track and field.
This touches my heart. They were doing Tony MacAlpine's "Edge of Insanity" for his benefit concert. I love Steve, Paul, and Billy dearly for this. Tony is my favorite of all time.
Holy crap, Gilbert was killing it right there. Tone for days, and every note just popped, crisp and articulate. Even Vai had to take a back seat and let Pablo go!
So many of these comments are so dumb. Paul and Steve are two of the best electric guitarists in the world, but they have very different styles. This is a great performance, and neither one is "better" than the other in it.
They both have the best guitar faces in the world also ... A whole tone bend with singing vibrato can make either of them pull the best guitar face ...*LOVE IT!*
You are right.Love those 2 guys. Love MacAlpine too.Never in my mind 25 years ago i would have thought that i would see them together on the same stage. Like Vai and Malmsteen and Nuno Buttencour and Wylde and Satriani. Thanks guys.
@@aaronjackson3275 Paul Gilbert taught Buckethead for awhile, and is a huge influence on him. Buckethead even has a few mimicry riffs/licks he clearly took from Paul(straight up signature PG stuff). Most of the guys that have been in G3 could stand next to Buckethead, and that's coming from a huge fan of him.
A dosage of PG, a mouthful of vai.. a luscious taste of billy.. and a legend of DT-MP... My first 3 Bands that influenced me on my formative years in guitar.. damn. so good.. so good to see them in one stage.
Both guitarists have incredible ability - it’s really just a case of what they can come up with on the spur of the moment when they are improvising solos.
Two of the greatest modern guitarists. Its not a question of who is better? At that level it about who appeals to you more. Whats better, a Cheese Burger, or a slice of Pizza. It's all a matter of taste. And that's all music is. A consumable flavor.
Paul Gilbert's tone is phenomenal here
easy to hear the difference here huh?....that fireman he's playing is super resonant and the rest of the rig is 'just enough'...nothing over-processed.
Hunter paul played the randy rhodes signature amps once and that tone was also really sick
Always
hmmm I think the amount of gain he uses and the technique makes a huge difference in tone
4 years too late, but you can leave the "here" off that sentence.
That is also Billy Sheehan on bass (one of the all-time greats) and Mike Portnoy on drums (Dream Theater, Winery Dogs). What a lineup!
Savas Beatie Derek Sherenian on keys too.
Its a mix of MR big & Dream theater +Vai
Best lineup!
Mike portnoy was also a former drummer of A7X.
Shit I didn't realize macalpine was gone

Yea people try to make everything a competition so they can feel like they are on the winning side

And Portnoy.
They really nailed it, didn't they? Tony's music is amazing and this lineup made total justice to it
I think vai and Gilbert should definitely do a record together, they sound the best together
THIS!
Agreed.. the chemistry beetween them is undeniable..like a bestfriend.. wonder why they have not doing record together yet.
they should do VAIking kong ;)
Yeah, with Tony Macalpine on keys AND co-composing
@@alfredochavezv I like it 🤩
Stop fucking fighting, this is not a competition, this is two guitar masters having a good time.
Steve and Paul complimented each other really well.
Billy, Mike, Steve and Paul would make a killer band or at least a record!
04:22 hey thats mine !!
+Yngwie Malmsteen black star hahahaha
+Yngwie Malmsteen Yep, that's yours !!
+Yngwie Malmsteen Paul is a huge fan of yours. He even does some blues covers of yours :)
+Yngwie Malmsteen hahahahhahaa
Nudge nudge he's right, you know....
Two of the greatest Ibanez endorsers alive.
Holy crap, Gilbert was killing it right there. Tone for days, and every note just popped, crisp and articulate. Even Vai had to take a back seat and let Pablo go!
two of my top guitar heroes together on stage killing it with the best bass player any guitarists could have, OMG just THANK YOU!!

Nice duo!
zackvanhalen finally.....someone with an intelligent perspective.
They will realize this in their later years of being a musician. All players offer something different
4:22 Nice Yngwie reference there Paul! And way to pull the harmony off Steve haha!!!
Let be honest Paul steal the show in this video, even billy and Mike can't help but smile all the time
Vai and Gilbert are both monsters! End of story! Would love to see PG shredding like hell again during his Racer X years.
Lucky thing that Paul was able to rush right from his janitorial job to make the gig.
Save up that PTO folks.
Clark Feeley you know it!!! For $69 it drains!! Or is free!!!
Pretty much the best demonstration I've seen in years of two different playing styles and the reasons both are great.
I actually love their different styles together! Gilbert is very rhythmic and tight with his picking etc. Via is the opposite, very fluid.
Damn Pauls tone cuts through really nicely.
Let’s face it TM wrote some of the best rock instrumentals of all time
Tony McAlpine is one of my fav guitarist of all time
Paul kills here...that guitar has a beefy neck but he's running it like it was steve's whippy neck GEM.
Superb! I'm not usually a fan of G3-style guitar instrumentals but Paul and Steve played very tastefully here.
Hey! Paul gilbert the great ...in music a jack of all trade master of all
Great to see my all time fav. PAUL GILBERT STEVE VAI BILLY SHEHAN AND MIKE PORTNOY!! 😍😍
Suddenly a Black Star passed throug the stage! There is no replacement for these mosnters...
It's very unique combination, they play Tony's song with they own style.. awesome!
Guys Steve can play fast. If you know anything about him he doesn't step on toes when he's playing along with someone.
DONNIE Sowell Except for Guthrie Govan toes.
JoseitoEdlVodao I was about to comment that lol seems like steve is intimated by guthrie. he's always cutting him off
They won't even let buckethead at one of these g3s. There would be no need for another guitar player
Apple Jacks please Govan is better than mr KFc

So many that plays the guitar fast, so few write songs that touch the huge masses of society.
I love watching a group of legends performing together. . that goes for Sheehan and portnoy as well!
Paul and Steve. Two great guitarist who inspired the world of rock.
The two best guitarists, and the best bass player the world has ever seen, on the same stage.
KeithH02 and the best drummer
Dont forget MP!
KeithH02
Best bass player is Geddy Lee.
Efrain Meza Pacheco
Best drummer in rock, Neal Pear.
Sorry to school you guys but someone has to do it.
paul gilbert is a freaking monster!!!
Both is my fav, master of technical playing, bravo
Two amazing guitarists who have both had the pleasure of working with both Portnoy and Sheehan. Heck of a lot of talent and stories on that stage.
Mr. Tony would be proud. Excellent cover from a amazing theme. Beautiful. 🙂🙂🙂🙂🤘🤘🤘🤘
Steve Vai by far..Paul is the greatest noodler I've ever heard. Steve is literally talking to you thru the gee-tar
Two best guitarist in the world on the same stage!!!
It's not a good track they're playing though. Rather hear Shyboy anytime!
only one Paul Gilbert, vai is overated
These people are all angelic musicians. Absolutely no down sides can be found.
This is INSANE! I literally had goosebumps the whole time.
2 of the GREATEST guitar players in the world.....IF NOT THE 2 VERY BEST ! Hendrix would be PROUD of these 2 men.
I always love to see When brilliant players overlap like thisAnd they give each other room to be themselves but work together in a very unique way
Aha! I got it! This number was written by Tony Maccalpine!!^^
Both different. Both good.
2 guitar giants in 1 place ! Morover 2 men with great sense of humor. Very nice music, they 2 should make common record
I was there for this show, Steve auctioned off his guitar between sets
A dosage of PG, a mouthful of vai.. a luscious taste of billy.. and a legend of DT-MP... My first 3 Bands that influenced me on my formative years in guitar.. damn. so good.. so good to see them in one stage.
Love this, two of my favorite guitarists together, along with Billy Sheehan and Mike Portnoy. Greatness!
They are both great!
This gets better every time I watch it.
Nothing like a tribute to Macalpine with a tip of the hat to Malmsteen by Gilbert & Vai.
Paul stage🤟monster
Watching this video, I'm reminded that Billy Sheeran is in the centre of Steve and Paul's boolean circle. 😁
The Janitor, Paul Gilbert... Clean sheet
Paul Gilbert all day!!
have you seen both live? i have via waste him!
Vai is superior. More creativity, better tone, much cleaner etc.
Both guitarists have incredible ability - it’s really just a case of what they can come up with on the spur of the moment when they are improvising solos.
Paul gilbert is amazing!
i want this lineup to exist as a band and put something out together!! what those hearts could create!!!
That's a supergroup baby.
Gilbert is on another planet holy fuck
2 great guitar virtuosos in 1 place ! Nice to watch and listen to
paul and steve my hero...!
Steve Vai, delegating... "Eh, he can play it...I dont feel like it" lol
Masters at work
My 2 favourite guitarists together
And look, Billy on bass and Mike on the skins. Killer lineup. Yeah and really dig the Tony McAlpine tribute.
Paul is epic but Steve is classic.
Man... I love these two... unbelievable!
Billy Sheehan is everywhere
he always holds it all together
Yep, and that EVO also is everywhere!
Portnoy is everywhere too. Should be memes by now
haha true, he's with PG in MrBIG, Vai in G3, and Portnoy in Winery Dogs. and here he's with all of them at once
I noticed him just casually playing bass in the back
Love Tony's writing.
I love paul gilbert its a genius like steve vai they are legends guitar heroes.
At the beginning I wanted to choose the best. But it is impossible . I love both of them. They are part of the music holy trinity 🤘🤘🎸!
They both have such big hands with crazy long fingers
My only wish is that TOMMY BOLIN was still alive and would not of died the way he did. Tommy had so much promise and talent. Miss that man. rip.
steve vai is amazing
Great Upload ! Thank You As I'm a Steve Vai Fan and Love Paul as Well ...
This is MUSIC !
what a great CD that would with Paul, Steve, Mike P and Billie S.....OMG killer!!!...
Nice of Steve to bring the janitor on stage
Great performance!!
Two legendary Paul skills 🔥
That malmsteen reference lol hahaha

Great analogy
with billy sheehan on bass and mike portnoy on drum, i'm speechless
I really enjoyed it. An epic piece of footage.
this is pure inspiration!
THIS IS JUST FANTASTIC!! THANKS FOR THE UP-LOAD BROTHER!!
The Intro "I've never seen two best guitar player"

Extreme teeth shred monster, and killer stage performer, paul gilbert!!!
Damn Paul, those teeth picking ...
They're about at same level, so the chemistry is good.
Marvellous guitarists. Both of them. I have 2 guitars signed from each of them
What sane person would ever buy this shaped PG signature axe?! It's a right dog!
super like👌👌👌👌👌
Love it!!!
❤❤❤👌
Paul gilbert the master

paul gilbert is the best
the perfect dream line up right here!!!!
