A few more fun facts: Eusebio was the first Portuguese player to win the Balon d'Or. And he was also the first African player, as he was born in Mozambique, and the first black player to win the BO. Strange that no one ever mentions that. The word Luz means light, but it's also the name of the neighbourhood adjacent to Benfica. Luz is where the first Estadio da Luz was built and thus it's name. So the literal translation of fEstadio da Luz as the Stadium of Light is technically a misnomer. And the original Estadio da Luz was at the time the biggest stadium in Europe and the 3rd biggest in the world, holding up to 120,000 people. Mad considering Lisbon is a relatively small city of only 500,000 people. So when full, more than 20% of the city's population would be in that stadium.
glad to see that you visited my clubs stadium its a beauty. They also have a statue of Eusebio in America as well in Foxboro, massachusetts. Home of the New England Patriots and New England Revolution. Eusebio was a great ambassador for portuguese football
Ah, the famed Bela Guttmann curse. Personally I think that Benfica are simply stuck in a vicious circle where bad luck, superstition and nervousness all play a part, just like you have to remember that no finals are automatically 50-50 encounters. You are bound to be playing really good opponents.
Bela Guttman didn’t actually curse the club. That’s a myth that is told to these days but that is not the truth actually. He did get pretty angry at the benfica president at the time and then he was interviewed by a Austrian(I think it was Austrian) newspaper where he told what happened. and then through translation from Austrian to Portuguese it came out as a curse but it’s not what he actually said, he even returned to benfica a few years after
I really enjoyed the video. I think you managed to pass on the greatness of this club to both your English followers and even some Portuguese. After this amazing video you got +1 subscriber. Keep up the excellent work, hugs from Portugal!
I think I remember a few years ago, a Benfica-Porto match, in the former Estadio da Luz, when the security measures were not up to today's standards, an attendance of 135,000 spectators and the thousands who were unable to enter, all of this in a country of 10,000,000 inhabitants.
Great video. Thank you. Benfica is my club. I live in Canada now and don’t get back to see matches. You did the club proud. Can’t wait for my next visit back. Your channel is amazing 👍
Been Lisbon beautiful city. I saw Estadio Da Luz from outside but had such little time to visit stadium. So want to see it as its a home away from home stadium for me.
As a benfica fan since ever, I am very proud of my club and my country. I loved this vlog, thank you so much for sharing and showing why we are one of the best clubs in Europe ❤️
That’s a strange one, since the ‘ curse’, had no idea about that, it’s amazing, all these snippets of unique history you’re unearthing for us, really enjoyed that! Interestingly, man United became the first English club to win the European cup, beating Benfica in 1968, if my history is right ?
Been watching your vids for a few months now but this is the first time I've seen non-UK ones. Very interesting video, especially as I'm a Palace fan, so good to see us mentioned with the Eagles connection :)
Since the Bella Gutman's curse Benfica lost.. 5 European Champions final's 1 UEFA Cup 2 Europe League 3 youth league Champions League 😬😬 Benfica is easily top-10 of the most iconic and historical clubs of the world
As a Benfica fan, having watched Benfica lose back to back Europa league finals in 2013 and 2014, it really was painful. The commentators always liked to bring up the curse, but I was confident in Benfica winning it..
It wasn't just the three big clubs that got stadiums. 10 stadiums were built for the Euros and their respective cities/teams. Most of them are not in full use now as these smaller teams often get relegated and can't afford the costs of massive stadiums for such small audiences. Portugal has some of the smallest average audience in Europe - mostly due to how most people support the three big teams in addition to their local teams and the quality of the football practised suffers in consequence.
Absolutely fantastic it's the fact you bring this information to the world, thank you my friend and everything you said is true, everything except Eusebio having 2 European cups but to be honest he only got 1 and a few more final, Thank you Benfica for ever ( God I miss home ) cheers
Great stuff Sam, bowled over by your excitement and enthusiasm on these Portugal vids ! Learnt quite a lot I didn't know about Benfica and the city itself looks fab, in the bits you showed before. Did you have the tour guide to yourself ?! It certainly seemed that way ! If so you were really lucky, came across as a personal one on one tour ...
