I like how instead of complaining about what you don't like about the 119, you simply adjusted it to what you wanted. I hope you get many years of use out of this knife and have a lot of fun with it.
I love that we live in a world where folks can do what they want to their stuff and share it with all. I love modding things and you did a sweet job. My 119 is untouched and might stay that way but I respect the time and attention you gave this project. Looks great to me either way!
You could've just bought a different knife with a better steel and a drop point blade since that's what this looks like. I myself would not change a thing about the Buck 119. I love the 119's blade and the clip point on it. I keep mine original and it has served me well. even wet, the handle is perfect and I love the feel of it. But what matters here is if you are happy with it. I would rather just buy another knife than to ruin a perfectly good knife.
Ruined is exactly right. The top of the guard he removed is for your thumb to rest on for more control, and to prevent slipping. I get this is a mass produced knife, but it was designed for a purpose. Evidently he didn't understand how to use this blade for its intended purpose.
The knife as modded looks ugly and I think that it has been weakened by removing the pin in order to make a lanyard hole. Your knife--but I would just get another knife before messing up a beautiful 119.
i am ok with the lanyard and the handle (i guess on the handle) as they both serve practical purposes but the blade mod i am like "Look at what they did to my boy!" like in the memes, the blade is just uglier and i get less chance for the point to snap off but my god it takes away the whole ascetic in a way, i feel sorry for the blade but i just hope the guy here takes good care of it.
Gotta say, like what you did there, that handle looks awesome, I have a 119 and love it, might just buy another one to try something like this, great job, thanks for sharing.
Had a Buck 120 years ago and sold it. I regretted that so recently I finally bought a 119. I will keep it original and use it for camping. If you wanted a drop point consider a Jeo- tec #29 made in Spain and good quality.
Love the leather stacked handle. I have a buck 120 and love the blade but hate the slippery handle. I was thinking of leather stacking the handle or getting a sheet of talon grip pro and wrapping the handle. Thank you for the video and showing the ideas to mame it better.
Personally I just wrapped the handle of mine with hockey stick tape. Haven't really done much else to it other than that and sharpening. Tried to baton some wood and the gaurd bent up a bit so that was kinda annoying. But it actually kinda gave me a bit more room on the handle. I plan to get another one at some point to have a more orginal one but with the tape still. But the current one I have I'll chop the blade and turn it into kinda a seax.
No no no you destroy a treasure broooooo...it seems like you need another type of knife...this is hunting and primary skinning knife not made to use as Survival etc....it seems you need the bk2 bro
These mods work for my uses. There is certainly nothing wrong with the classic 119 design. It's been around for a LONG time for a reason. But my mods have definitely improved this knife in feel and function for me. Thanks for watching and commenting.
@@dicktrickle5352 trying to break the pelvis bone on the buck in the pic. I have had no problems with many deer, but this one was tough. My buck is 619 from 1992.
I had a 119 that I broke (I forget how) and I’ve been sitting on a 120 that I haven’t been able to get rid of for years. I might just do this to the 120
thanks! It seems to be a quite polarizing mod. Some really love and others say I ruined it! BTW I'm still loving this blade. My mods really improved the knife for me
You shouodnt be bushcrafting with a 119 they are hunting knives designed for proceaaing game.. Not being used to split wood and other stupid shit, get a 124 for that purpose
Alot of favorable comments. Having used my 119 at 31 years now I kinda cringed. The lanyard hole was something I thought about doing....I dropped it in a river in April this year but I reached down and got it. I was near the shore. Maybe 2.5 feet down. I did order another off ebay, the sheath is more wimpy than my 1988 model. I also ordered some 120s but they're from like 1986 and 1987.
I really like your mods. My handle broke near where your index finger would go. I was looking for a fix. I might fill the chip with epoxy and wrap the handle. Great video 👍
Strong work sir! I’ve wished Buck would modify this iconic blade for years! You’ve inspired me to do the same, although I’ll probably just create some texture on the handle, the other mods are spot on. Cheers from one Texan to another!!!
I'd put some serrations on the false edge left. Would be good for cutting tough stuff. And I'd make the finger guard a little shorter. But overall I like the mods. The Phenlolic could take checkering well if someone is up to that sort of job.
Wow in so glad i came across this video. I just ordered a 119 and was wondering what to do about the tip. Your drop point mod reminds me of my favorite Spyderco the stretch 1, definitely going to follow your lead on this one looks great and more functional for my needs
Very nice Mods. Buck should give a choice which knife you want to buy. That model is excellent... PERSONALLY I would buy the original & the mod you just created... I have buy to 2 Buck 119 and have some make the Modifications for me... 👍👍
eh.....somebody please get this guy a few Old Hickory knives! Seriously though, I customize everything too. More power to you. It's part of the fun of knives.
Looks great! Probably more work than most people are willing to do but if you enjoyed it super! The original version is also worth keeping for hunting because the blood cleans up quickly off the grip.
I like buck products as a whole and adore my buck 110 folder. However, I don’t like my 119 as it has very few positive qualities. I am pretty sure that I purchased it all those years ago because I watched one too many Rambo movies. I think these mods make the knife a lot more useful.
It is rather ugly compared to what it was but I totally agree with the functionality. However you look at it it's not that expensive and you can do whatever the heck you want! I have several different flavors of the 119, most are new in box but one especially gets 99% of the use and it's kinda beat. It was my first and the only mod is wrapping the handle with rubber tape so now it's super grippy. All my others have wood handles, and that first one with the std black phenolic is why. I also have a couple 619's with oem rubber handles which are super cool and don't have much of a bolster/guard on top either which I appreciate. I think you would've liked the 619 a lot more. Your blade mod was a bit of a shock to me but I see the reason and kinda like it. I broke ~1/4" off the tip of my beater which kinda killed the look, so now I'm actually considering your mod which never crossed my mind until I saw yours. I won't be wrapping my handle twine but I may sand blast it and see how that looks/feels, and if a fail I may coat it with something. I've often wanted to remove the handle and replace with a piece of nice wood, which I may end up doing. So thanks for posting that because it's helpful and gives me some motivation to do that stuff to mine :)
I like the idea of the buck knives but I’m a fan of the scream movies and how ghostface use the buck 120 buck for the buck 119 I like what did you to it and if you was selling that knife how much would you take it for or could I buy a buck 119 and let you do the same thing like that knife in the video?
The pronounced clip point is the only reason I have a 119. The handle is already a bit thick for me, so wrapping it is out of the question. I wanted a stainless drop point knife with a blade under 6" with an ergonomic grip with waterproof scales, so I've got a Grohmann #4 with micarta handle on the way. More useful blade shape, and better steel than 420HC, too.
This is a great idea if I ever break the tip of my knife. But I personally wouldn't want to do that to the blade. I have other knives I can use that came that way. It's your knife. You need to make it how you like it. Nothing wrong with that. I have thought about wrapping the handle with black grip tape. Like you use on baseball bat handles. I have done it with cheapo knives. Just hate messing around with my beautiful good knife.
