As someone who has legitimately shot an 8 point buck in the heavy rain I had absolutely no problem field dressing it with this very knife while still pouring rain. So while the handle is indeed slick it didn't impare my ability to use the knife while also not piercing the guts. The only reason I carry the knife is my grandpa got it for me for Christmas after I killed my first deer, and it'd hurt his feelings if I didn't carry it.
Since the knife is intended to be used for hunting they probably used that material so you could easily wash off blood. Lynn Thompson should consider that too so I don't always have to buy a new knife once it is drenched in the blood of my enemies.
That's because of the shiney handle. The aluminium. A leprechaun would have liked it for sure. Shiney shiney ! Watching the Joe X video on the Buck 120. It was quite tough. and it went through the car better than most knives. That has to be said.
I’ve still got my first one I got for Christmas from my dad back in the early 80’s. The 119 isn’t the best at any one thing, it’s meant to be Well balanced enough for about anything, durable, and multipurpose in hunting and camping. I’ve collected hundreds of knives, swords, axes, and just about everything with a blade, and most traditional designs as well as new ones through half a century. The buck isn’t my go-to, but the best first camping/hunting knife around. I myself carry several knives in the woods, and several EDC’s. Now, there is no perfect knife, design, or material for everything, but to hit on something very multipurpose, simple in design, that remains popular throughout time is quite a feat indeed. Most modern designs can’t, and won’t accomplish that.
Apparently, cutting wood and vegetables is abuse. These days, I just use an axe to cut stuff. Saves me the trouble of dealing with keyboard warriors and internet commandos.
Pretty much...when even CS starts telling you not to batoin kindhling with their knives...thats corporate BS for lawyer up when you make an iffy knife.
I don’t know shit about knives. Saw the Buck 119 at Walmart and said, “I need a knife” watched this video in the parking lot. Laughed a lot, was entertained, and walked back in the store and bought the knife. So the Xenia, OH store has a sale literally based on this video. Thanks for turning my dog shit day into a slightly better one with your commentary 😊
The 120 is the one with the fighting knife blade length. The 120 competes with the Kabar fighting knife. The 119 is shorter and not, technically, a fighting knife.
@@totallyfrozen When Col. Applegate and Mr. Fairbairn got together to design the replacement for the Sykes-Fairbairn commando, they decided to talk to a real expert. They found a resistance member in Norway who's speciality was taking out sentries. He had killed something like 100 Germans with a knife. He said the blade needed to be 6" long to insure penetration to the organs, from any angle. Shorter wouldn't do, and longer was wasted blade. The Applegate-Fairbairn has a 6 1/4" blade, and the excellent "coke bottle" handle. Had the war lasted into 1946, this would have replaced the Sykes-Fairbairn.
I ran over my 119 with a forklift and broke the hollow Phenolic handle. I sent it to Buck and asked if they could replace the handle with one of their solid wood ones. They couldn’t but sent a new one with the solid wood handle and a new sheath. Thanx Buck! I drilled a drain hole in the heavier original sheath and use it.
I've used this knife for 23 years for hunting. It's one of 2. I use a smaller knife, the 119 is strong and usually used for rough stuff and my smaller knife is for most things . I hammer rabbits to the back of the skull with the flat side of the thick blade to dispatch them with the 119. Crap handle but I've never slipped.
Buck 119 is a great hunting knife, it really shines with small/medium game. It’s small enough to skin and maneuver, but large enough to do some field processing. The handle while appearing slick never slipped on me and is easily cleaned.
I was given a buck 119 and buck 110 folding knife in 1995 which I still have now. They work. I use both for gutting deer. They work. I haven't really had a need for more knives.
I love the Buck 119 knife and have just ordered and received one from the factory last month from Buck since the first one I purchased was given away to my grandfather decades ago after he saw and loved it. After giving away my first 119 I tried buying another one at the military exchange, but they didn't have one in stock so I purchased the 120 which I still have and is a great knife also and have had it for about 38 years or more.

I'm not that old ... but the older I get, the more disillusioned I become with the big, unwieldy knives I've been carrying, 8+ inches long in the blade and over a pound in weight. And somehow or another I keep coming back to the Buck, with easy sharpening, lightweight carrying, razor-sharp cutting, and the perfect spine for throwing ferro sparks. It just works.
The 119 is a perfect compromise it's not the perfect knife for anything in particular except being the one life that does everything pretty good a side plus is it looks really badass and you feel really bad ass when you're holding it and you feel like doing some badass something with it

I had to buy another one because I ended up giving my dad the 75th-anniversary edition 119 and I wish I could've given him a plain 119 because now the 75th versions are going up in value because of the damn shield on the handle! But it is a great knife indeed. Phenolic is an indestructible polymer, in fact, pool balls are made from phenolic and just like the handle of the buck 119, they are both indestructible. I'm glad I bought another one. These knives make a great gift as well to someone just starting out in bushcraft or as a knife collecting hobby, so let's give our family members and friends this time-honored classic and thus, carry on in this wonderful tradition of Buck being our first knife!
"Tofu soft taco night" sounds delicious. I also went the wrong way on my Bowie experience. I went from Let's Dance to Earthlings, back to Space Oddity, Station to Station, and then Scary Monsters.
Its a piece of steel with a sharp edge. At the end of the day, use what you got. It'll work. I wouldn't want to fillet a fish with it, but its doable. Just messier than a knife specifically designed for that. And if someone busts a squirrels piss sack with a six inch blade, they'd probably bust it with a scalpel, too.
Not sure if you were joking about the "blood groove" but thats not what that is, Its known as a "fuller" and is typically used to manipulate the weight distribution on the blade. By removing mass from the middle while leaving mass on the upper 3rd of the blade moves the balance further out for better chopping and slashing while the mass removed also serves to lighten the blade for more agility overall in fighting situations. It has nothing to do with blood or suction or pressure, thats an old myth I used to believe too until I started learning more about making knives. Fullers can also make the blade more eye catching and many have done them in artistic ways with patterns and symbols. A favorite one Ive seen is with it shaped and etched to look like a feather. Im not sure if you were being tongue in cheek or serious(Aspergers syndrome), you may already know all this or have learned this over the past 4 years since you posted this, If so I apologize I just discovered your channel while looking for info on the D2 Ka-bar.
I’m just calling it the colloquial term many people use- including Buck and retailers. I wouldn’t look into it any more than that. www.knifecenter.com/item/BUCMBO119LE/buck-119-special-legacy-collection-historical-collectors-set
Buddy you are missing the only tool you'll ever need - a club. It will serve you for all your needs including processing firewood, hunting (once you get sick of eating berries) and self-defense.
It's borderline too much in all regards, which is why I like it. I want to inspire that "not quite sure if mall ninja, Rambo larper or not" kinda thought in others if I'm camping. They'll never know if I'm cosplaying or not, and it shall vex them.
I think the Buck 119 Special is just about perfect. Feels great in my hand. Good for fighting. Good for camping. Where you can't carry a gun, carry a big Buck.
Lost my 120 General, so I got two of these little suckers. They take a very fine edge, and sharpened the clip edges, they will tear up anything that comes into contact with it.The swooping bottom edge will cut thru meat, hide or pretty much anything and it's a handy hunting knife and does stuff a 10"+ Trailmaster or Natchez can't.. lightweight, easy to carry, and goes unnoticed by most people. The sheath sucks but I tend to make my own anyway. Thanks for the posts!
Mmm skinning and disembowling freshly hunted green peppers. Never knew about the condom trick. +1 to use of condom. You know they carry a litre of water too? I'm starting to think Condoms being used for protection during sex weren't their ogriginal purpose considering it does everything else so well.
In my experience (used a 120 General for @40 years) the handle material is no problem, wet or dry. The knives held up well in the woods... Agree on the khukri and smaller blade for camp use...
A classic knife from Buck, it is a hunter knife not a bushcraft knife, it is not for battoning. The 420 steel is stunning in this knife, Buck can use like it was a steel from a much better grade. Regards!.
I use my 119 hunting. I just prefer a long blade to skin hogs. The clip tip works good to start your cut. Drop points arnt unless they have a gut hook. I use my hatchet or hawk for" bush craft" also I cut alot of rope when sailing and such and the longer blade I like but it's dangerous when the boat is rockin. Good vids man
Its not a "Blood" groove, its a fuller that helps to reduce the weight, but does not impact the strength of the blade. I've had my Buck 119 since the early 80s, back when they are using 420 stainless steel. I also have a Kabar, mine was also bought back in the early 80s and it is made from 1095 High Carbon steel, after all mine was made in Orleans NY.
I have several Buck knives, the 119 among them.Just added a 75th anniversary one to the collection. Think I'll get another off ebay later today. The knife is one of man's most important tools because we often need to CUT THINGS and it can be carried along with us. Surprisingly, even with "cheap" blade steel that somehow, everyone seems to like, the Buck 119 is a very convenient, very portable tool that CUTS THINGS really well. You should read Buck's instructions on what NOT to do with a knife.
The buck 119 is a good all-around knife besides looking totally badass you feel badass when you hold it in your hands and it makes you want to do bad ass things even though you're not sure what those things are but you're going to feel badass whatever you do besides I just like it I don't need any of the reason to buy a knife other than I just like the way I feel when I hold it. I also own the 124 and the 120 and the 192 and the 622 and the 624 blah blah blah blah blah
Dam I didn't realize this thing has 5mm blade thickness. Chonky boi. That being said, I'm normally not one to turn my nose up to some batoning, but batoning with a hollow ground clip point made me cringe haha
I know I am late to the party on this one. Somehow I missed it. RUclips notifications are all jacked up for me right now. Anyhooo I enjoyed this video. Laughed a good bit.
I have a version of this with a rubber like handle and nylon sheath I bought back in the 80’s. I hate the phenolic handle...it’s like a piece of glass. The one I have sticks in you hand like its never going to slip.
Someone commented under this video, that the Phenolic isn't bad in the wet. I think it's not the best material, but I guess everyone has a different opinion huh.
One of the ways to improve the 119 is to make it in a super steel. OH, WAIT! They make it in S30V! WOOHOO! Seriously, get one in S30V. You will not regret it. Oh, and, there's nothing wrong with the handle. :P
I just bought an s30v version with the black handle for my father's Christmas present. Hope he likes it. It is the 75th anniversary. This knife is an icon. I remember one time we went to Cabela's and he was eyeballing the buck 119. I have so many other knives but this one is just so classic so American and so not intended for anything besides General cutting tasks, and cleaning game. Definitely won't be using it as a hatchet thank God. LOL
Ok, you have a love hate relationship with the 119. It's a decent field knife despite it's "dated" style. I have a 121 Fisherman and a 103 skinner and I do like them for use on deer. The 121 also makes a decent camp food prep knife if needed. I've also cut food with the 103. Wild caught pizza may have been the last thing. Last time I checked they make hatchets, axes, and splitting mauls. I endorse their use without reservation. Along with chainsaws and bow saws. Batoning wood is a real extreme. I've done it, but I would like to think of that as my more adventurous days. However I do know how if my axe won't start. Love those classic Buck knives for what they are. Oh, I will say this latest crop of knife sheaths is pretty much an abomination. The full flap was about as utilitarian and dependable as it ever got. Buck had a better traditional sheath 60 years ago than the current crop. In my opinion, a sheath should be up to a 365 day use cycle. Very few sheaths that come with a new knife are remotely up to that. They are barely up to a 10 day deer season for 10 years. Custom makers are about the only way to go for an EDC knife sheath And even those wear out eventually.
A good follow up video to your KaBar Dogs Head Utility Knife and the Buck 119 knife would be a review of one of Case's fixed blade knives, like the Stacked Leather or Buffalo Horn Swept Skinner, Skinner, Hunter, Utility Hunter, or Slim Hunter. Also, can you please do a review of Case's new Winkler knives series?
Check out Advanced Underwear Dude rocking the $25 Exoficio undies. All BS aside, anyone who’s worn a pair will never want to wear anything else. Well, nothing else in terms of underwear that is. Dude. You should do a review of the Exoficio.
My brother asked for a buck 119 for his birthday. Me, being a cheeky bastard, gave him $1.19 (get it?). Side note, I think that saying Bowie, Boo-ee, sounds gay af and I ain't gay so miss me with that. I'll see you next tofu soft taco night.
Buck needs to offer handles other than the black Micarta. That handle becomes the proverbial "slicker than snot" once blood and fat get on it during skinning. Actually dangerous. Anyone else experience that issue? Have a 102 size with a rubberized handle....zero slip.
Who hunts with a knife? Seems hard, I use a gun like most people and know a few bow hunters but I personally don't know anyone who knife hunts. I do bring a pocket knife while hunting and whichever fixed blade makes me feel sexy in my camo that day. I find arbitrary length and weight guidelines for knives annoying especially for people who are just gonna sit in a tree or blind and wait. What if my gun jams while I'm getting attacked by a pack of coyotes or a mama bear and I don't have a trusty pig sticker? Oh wait never mind I also carry a 10mm in the woods for dogs and hogs.
Very nice I really really like your video and I really like that knife I don't know they're just something special in my heart about it and it's full Tang and it's really a good night for camping and outdoor for feather sticking and cutting down some brush and shopping small pieces of wood and it works very good
I was just at a knife shop with a WW2 Vet explaining to me the difference between the ka-Bar (He still has his govt issued from 1944) and the buck. I bought the buck... but with the wood handle.
And it works batoning works real good with that knife believe it or not I still think it's a silent night for the price and it's got the buck name and it's made in the USA and I think that's cool let's keep a little history of our great country called America 👍
Here I thought you were knocking out the fixed blade reviews while it was still batonable outside so you could do the little stuff inside. You know, so you don't lose something in the snow like the duke duke.
I traded the smaller douk douk to a subscriber. But yeah... I have to get fixed blades done, while the weather holds out. Got a BK-10, a Gransfors Bruk hatchet, and a Cold Steel All Terrain to go. I currently don't have any folders lined up... but that can change from day to day.

Buddy you are missing the only tool you'll ever need - a club. It will serve you for all your needs including processing firewood, hunting (once you get sick of eating berries) and self-defense.
Phenolick... that's what I heard
It's borderline too much in all regards, which is why I like it. I want to inspire that "not quite sure if mall ninja, Rambo larper or not" kinda thought in others if I'm camping. They'll never know if I'm cosplaying or not, and it shall vex them.
I love the 120 I'm 7 inch gang
It's a great knife but for some reason the handle was always very uncomfortable for me and awkward
File, the Finger grooves, sand and radius, then wrap with, Athletic Tape.
10-15 Minutes, DONE and,.. PERFECT !!
This knife was designed for hunting and fighting. The only weak spot I can see is that the handle can be a bit slick.
I Rounded the Finger groove area with, a Rat tail File and 220 grit sandpaper then, wrapped it with, Athletic Tape,.. "Problems",.. Solved !
Seriously Bro, up your knife game and learn how to french cut a fucking onion.
No.
Mmm skinning and disembowling freshly hunted green peppers.
Never knew about the condom trick. +1 to use of condom. You know they carry a litre of water too? I'm starting to think Condoms being used for protection during sex weren't their ogriginal purpose considering it does everything else so well.
Mmmm, tofu soft tacos
ol pappy's favorite, back when men were Men.
Not enough brass…. Next!
Eh, sawbacks scream 1980’s Rambo ultra survival-tacticool knives. I don’t care for them. The 119 is better without it.
The clip point is made to catch the baton better. So much design philosophy put into this classic blade 😀
Yeah, but unlike others it won't let you do the bare handed batoning, you still need a second stick. It's clearly visible at 0:48
I'm pretty sure it's made to be a fighting knife.
Haha no. The clip point is for detail work when cutting up a carcass.
In my experience (used a 120 General for @40 years) the handle material is no problem, wet or dry. The knives held up well in the woods... Agree on the khukri and smaller blade for camp use...
Good to hear!
Buck calls it a blood groove in their marketing man. Write them a letter.
you sure know your knives, bu you ruined that bellpepper
It was definitely still edible for my three year old.
I like this channel
I just like It.......
Honestly, this is my go to outdoors knife. Whether that mean hunting, fishing, bushcraft or what ever else. Hard to beat in my opinion.
You fuckin rock.
Is big 105 better
I have several Buck knives, the 119 among them.Just added a 75th anniversary one to the collection. Think I'll get another off ebay later today. The knife is one of man's most important tools because we often need to CUT THINGS and it can be carried along with us. Surprisingly, even with "cheap" blade steel that somehow, everyone seems to like, the Buck 119 is a very convenient, very portable tool that CUTS THINGS really well. You should read Buck's instructions on what NOT to do with a knife.
Only THING that CUTS is the attitude man. Appreciate the use of your time.
When cutting an onion you must cut the tip of you thumb off or you are cutting the onion wrong. Imho that is
The buck 119 is a good all-around knife besides looking totally badass you feel badass when you hold it in your hands and it makes you want to do bad ass things even though you're not sure what those things are but you're going to feel badass whatever you do besides I just like it I don't need any of the reason to buy a knife other than I just like the way I feel when I hold it.
Poor buck.
I know I am late to the party on this one. Somehow I missed it. RUclips notifications are all jacked up for me right now. Anyhooo I enjoyed this video. Laughed a good bit.
Yeah RUclips’s notification sucks. Twitter is better.
LOL
Buck 119 is perfect. It needs no change. And I'm talking about the normal production one. Sent by god himself
I put a spray on bedliner paint on the handle, made a huge difference
Custom makers are about the only way to go for an EDC knife sheath
And even those wear out eventually.
This knife is so good that they should use it in a horror movie franchise or something.
It is, its used in scream movies. They use buck 120 and 119.
@@TorryGood I know. That's the joke.
@@trapperscout2046 but I don't think iv ever seen any in the walking dead tho
I've found an easy hack for the slippery handle; super-gluing my hand to the knife.
We talking OGSG or GGSG?
I'd like to see the 76yr old 119 combined with the current super steel of the month, 3V. Old meets new.
And costs $275 instead of $50..............
they do make one with s30v, I have one
How to improve the 119? Buy the general 120. Ghost face killed a lot of kids with it.
Never use your knife like a hatchet. Knife is for knife work. Use a hatchet for hatchet work.
While it may be outdated, nothing beats it when going on a fast spree. I recommend the town of Woodsboro, California. Really good game there.
Someone send this man a Tom Brown tracker.
SOME1, NE1
Very nice I really really like your video and I really like that knife I don't know they're just something special in my heart about it and it's full Tang and it's really a good night for camping and outdoor for feather sticking and cutting down some brush and shopping small pieces of wood and it works very good
I was just at a knife shop with a WW2 Vet explaining to me the difference between the ka-Bar (He still has his govt issued from 1944) and the buck. I bought the buck... but with the wood handle.
If you can't survive bush crafting, aka camping, with this buck you don't need more expensive knifes, just better skill set
And it works batoning works real good with that knife believe it or not I still think it's a silent night for the price and it's got the buck name and it's made in the USA and I think that's cool let's keep a little history of our great country called America 👍
Funny how nicer (costlier) knives stay home and my Moras go camping and fishing.... annnnd now knife hoarding (I mean “collecting”) seems absurd.
I was about to type a comment about multi tools, but then I seen you uploaded the Victorinox Spirit.
Save your money for the Cold Steel Drop Forged Bowie (Monolith Series). It’s the last knife you’ll ever need.
