My grandmother and my aunt (2yo at the time) along several other people, men and women, were granted refuge there for several days while fleeing from the Germans during WWII. The monks are strict but not unreasonable or cruel.
If a woman enters, just for spite, she will be asked to leave, failing to do so all doors will be shut, no monk will interact with her, but she will not be harassed nor hurt in any way. Most likely the Police will escort her out.
Its their land, their rules.
The prohibition of women presence on Mount Athos is accepted by the European Union. It is an exeption to the freedom of movenment and settlement added in the agreement with which Greece entered the European Union.
There is another exeption to the freedom of settlement. No one is allowed to settle in the Alan islands of Finland, so as to preserve their Viking tradition and culture.
So, both these exeptions are part of the communaut aquee, or whatever they called it, of the European Union.
Since July 1974, turkish barbarian troops invaded and occupy Kypros (Chypre, Zypern). In May 2004, Kypros was to enter the European Union. The alleys of turkey tried to help turkey by imposing an agreement, according to which the freedom of movenment, settlement and owning a property was to be restricted for the occupied area of Kypros. This was the Cofi Anan plan of the United Nations, which in practice was to impose an apparthide. The people of Kypros rejected the plan.

A very cool fact about this place is that it's basically the last remaining area of the Roman Empire. The first of the 21 monasteries there was founded by Emperor Nicephoros Phocas and he asked for a cell to be kept for him but he never made it there since he was murdered. The door of this monastery, Great Lavra, was taken from the emir's palace at Crete, which Nicephoros reconquered, and can still be seen there today. Almost all, if not all, of the monasteries there were built while the area was still part of the Roman Empire and the way of life there has barely changed since then.

Fun fact: in the 1300's the Byzantine Emperor hired the Great Catalan Company to fight the Turks in Anatolia. They ran afoul of each other and the Emperor had the mercenary leader killed. In response, the company occupied parts of Greece for 80 years (Duchies of Athens and Neopatria). As a result of this occupation, the monks of Mt. Athos also banned Catalan citizens from entering. This ban was lifted only in 2000.
why ban catalans?
@@lepen_macron The bulk the great Catalan Company were catalan "almogavars" , or people from near areas who spoke related lenguages had similar culture (and looked like catalans to the greek people), and were part of the territorys under the administration of the Crown of Aragon (a political entity similar to the UK, where every Kingdom had his own institutions, but they all had a common King and similar culture).
This "almogavars" (a word that came from the abaric lenguage and ment "they ones who wage war") were mountain and frontier people, used to live in the disputed territories between the islamic and the christian states, and lived almost exclusively from raids, asaults,, pillage and their work as mercenaries.
The havoc they caused in the Byzantine Empire (after their leaders were invited to a dinner and k*lled by the agents of the Emperor) was considerable, and there methods and manners of conquest, rude, to the point that they would make todays Talibans (or even th IDF in Gaza), look like a bunch of boy scouts.

Mount Athos: the perfect place to hide from Mom when the dishes need to be done
The issue of “no female animals” is an urban myth. The reason why meat and dairy is imported is because it is impossible for someone to both be a monk and farmer/shepherd (both are full time jobs)
Oh. Do Orthodox monks not have hours set aside for working in farms? I ask since Catholic monks theoretically do (the smaller the monastery, the more likely they do much of the farmwork themselves).
@@raphaelledesma9393 Greco is wrong here, all monks have employment, a task given to them, some tend farms, other handle the kitchen, some "progressive" monasteries even have a secretariat with computers.
They have their own cool police force with doubled headed eagle fezzes. The monestaries are super beautiful and I would hate it if it were to change.

Fun fact: A woman once disguised herself as a man and entered there, forgot the name tho (yeah it's a true story)

I don't doubt it!

There's been at least two women who disguised themselves to enter, and a few more who were there (but not disguised).
The two disguised women were Maryse Choisy in the 1930s, and Cora Miller in 1953.

It's a very interesting story...I managed to see Athos from a few kilometers away (I'm a girl) a couple of years ago. Beautiful place indeed. You can probably find more info on it here on youtube
Didn’t realise that Greece was so based
Really??
It's all of orthodoxy since basically every orthodox country except Romania who lost their monastery has one or more monasteries on the island. Our Serbian monastery was built by the first ruler of our most important dynasty with the help of our most important religious figure Stefan Nemanja and Saint Sava respectively in 1198

*female seagull lands on island shore*
The monks: Wait, that’s illegal
I mean they allow female wild animals because if they didn't the ecosystem would get wrecked and Mary would get mad at them for wrecking the peninsula, and most of the monasteries allow female goats and chickens for milk and eggs and female cats to kill all the mice and rats

1:31. There are roads going into the area. They're just mostly unpaved.
There are no gas stations, hotels or restaurants (there is 1 grocery store).
I actually visited for a few days there it's very nice and pretty cool like how they have there own makeshift elevator and that they make their own products which they sell
Man I would love to visit this place because I’m a big fan of history, and this place is pretty much the past thriving in the modern world. All the artifacts, the architecture, the old lifestyle, the dedication… it would be so amazing to see. It’s a bloody shame I’m legally not allowed to enter that place. I guess I’ll have to look up some documentaries and see if there are pictures and videos from men who’ve been there… 😂
Visiting Agio Oros (Άγιο Όρος, translated as Holy Mountain) is super interesting. Women can actually enter up to a certain point, but they cannot wear pants or revealing clothes. They provide long skirts at the entrance. Men also cannot enter wearing jeans and stuff, only cotton pants.
I went as a kid, it's a beautiful monastery and lots of tourists visit it. The monks in there are hardcore as fuck, they take it very seriously.
Women are not allowed on Mt. Athos. There are no such Long Skirts at the ports. Having been to Mt. Athos myself, I can also say with certainty that, at least of the Monastery I spent time at, they did not seem to care about Jeans. Why must you lie?
Wait really?
@@sweetsourorange not true, he is talking rubbish, in fact nobody can enter without a permit, it's easy to enter as an orthodox male, it might take some patience in the queue as an "unbeliever" male, no women allowed not so ever.
Are pants too sexy for the monks?
@@amazinggrapes3045 He's making stuff up. No women are allowed ever. Men are allowed to wear jeans.
I went there while on vacation to Greece, it was a really nice trip and one of the monks gave me a picture of Saint Luke because I have the same name.
He probably gave you the icon of saint Luke. We orthodox venerate icons and you should pray to Saint Luke. ❤

One goes to a monastery in order to live a secluded life, so since the beginning of Christian monasticism, women were banned from entering men’s monasteries, but so were men banned from women’s monasteries, apart from the priest that would celebrate Liturgy. Many other monasteries still keep the same rule, and even those that are open, are usually only partially so, restricted to the church and the courtyard. It is a very basic concept and this is explained very well in the video: why would you want to enter a monastery, if you’re not interested in “partying”? Curiosity? Nah, we’re good.
