Back in the day, when you had money you bought a Packard.

I had to laugh when she called the Packard a Cadillac wanna be... LoL 😀. When at the time Cadillac was trying to keep up with Packard .
Packard set the standard for luxury as well reliability.

I agree. I think Packard as the gold standard of American car manufacturing. I wish I was around during their heyday

I always thought that the Cadillac V16 could go really fast but that was before i learned it was made more for smoothness than power.

I was at a slower drag race once. When the Studebaker Drivers Club had its International meet in Charlotte, NC we had an officially unofficial drag race at a local stip. One of the Studebakers set a record at the track... for the slowest speed ever recorded. The truck was a freshly restored 47 M series pickup with a Champion 170 cid flathead six.

My great grand daddy ran whiskey in a Packard. He chose the larger motor though, he liked out running anything else on the road.

Fantastic. I have a question though.. On the steering wheel hub, there are two levers. One is obviously the lights, but the other one.. "Throttle: Open / Close".. was this some kind of governor? Or maybe cruise control?

Unfortunately neither of these people know how to drive or are scared to death to hurt their cars. I worked at a classic car museum in the 1980's, I had the good fortune to drive a 1931 V-16 Cadillac sedan on several occasions, and I can assure you, it can be shifted with relative ease, not much different than any other car of its time, and if you dump the clutch and floor that sucker (I was a teenager then) the car gains speed nicely - MUCH faster than what you see here. Ditto that for early 1930's Packard 8's. These two just don't want to risk getting dirt into the inner fenders or neither of them know how to drive.

Sounds like a Petro farm tractor. Ford N series, Massy Fergison. The V8 Ford car engine is what you want to hear. These are all made like flathead inline tractor engine. The v16 is 2 strait 8 motors basically. Side by side . A Deusenburg has a nice sound if it's a Super Charged one.

It was the Cadilac that was the Packard wanabe, THAT'S why they came out with BOTH A 12 & A 16 cylinder engine in 1929
as PACKARD had a 12 in 1916, ALSO the 16 was NEVER built for SPEED BUT custom body CRUISING power!!!!!
It was the SHORTER, lighter V12 that was the Cadillac "hot-rod"!!!

I don't think this would be the slowest drag race in history. Back in high school (circa 1976) I was involved in a drag race: Chevette vs Astro? (the Pontiac equivalent).
    It wasn't very exciting - 2 4 cylinder automatics ...

i don't know the Clayton's bank account balance, but IF they're wealthy they've earned EVERY penny. that Cadillac might bring hundreds of thousands at a Sotheby's auction, but think of the parts and labor bill he ran up restoring it to it's former glory.
that's thousands of hours labor and you just don't get the parts at your local parts store. if you need a piece, you have to make it.

    •  4 года назад

@Hal McAdams with heavy land yachts like those you need all the help you can get and a downhill slope is just the ticket... lol

    •  4 года назад +1

why do you even have to mention "Rich" as if thats a bad thing or in a condescending manner? Maybe I'm just sensitive regarding such nonsense because I get called "rich" all the time because I'm the only one in our entire trailer park that has a double wide trailer with the full wall to wall shag carpet option and a washing machine inside and not on the side porch.
