    • Awesome 2nd Visit to M...
Back in 2019, after my first railfanning trip to Marias Pass & Sandpoint, ID, I was very impressed with those areas and decided to go a second time. Thinking back, I was very glad I made the trip because the following year (2020), the pandemic pretty much cancelled all my railfanning trips, even the ones close to home.
Anyway, for the second time, I decided to fly into Portland, OR and check out the very scenic Columbia River Gorge. BNSF's Fallbridge Sub hugs the Washington side, while UP's Portland Sub hugs the Oregon side. Unfortunately, it was very windy during my visit at the start of the trip, rendering all of my videos filmed from a higher elevation spot useless. I was so close to not put a video together but decided to salvage some videos I have at or near track level (still windy, but at least sort of tolerable to me - please pardon the wind noise BTW). The wind was a lot less towards the end of the trip on 9/1 when I stayed for a few hours at the Home Valley curve.
I chose the BNSF side for the most part due to ease of pulling off the road, where as the UP side, it parallels Interstate 84 for most of the way (I did end up going to Deshutes River Recreation Area for a few awesome shots of UP).
All in all, it was a great start (and end) to my second time around railfanning trip in the northwest! I do wish to return to Columbia River Gorge someday and stay a while longer, because just under a two day stay is obviously not enough to appreciate what this area has to offer.

Thanks, Hans! Thinking back, it was a really well-worth trip considering the circumstances during the follow year (2020) with the pandemic. When I have an opportunity next time at the Columbia Gorge I will make sure to stay longer to fully enjoy what the area has to offer in terms of railfanning.

Wow, in only 2 days, you've seen more trains than I've seen over at least 10 days spread out over the few years I've been around LOL, they must coordinate to hide/take a break when I'm around, or shift all traffic to the other side of the river. Nice shots.

Thanks! As a first timer railfanning this gorge, it can get a bit intiminidating (e.g. you're on the BNSF side and trains coming on the UP side, and vice versa, and also, the detectors along here are pretty much silent, as opposed to Marias Pass, where detectors are much more closer together). I thought two days as someone not local to the Pacific Northwest was just too short. I definitely want to come out there again but stay a bit longer just to get a bit used to the area.
