Yes. Just cross the strands under instead of over. It takes a while before you can see the final fishtail pattern so don't give up too soon.

I tried this on my mannequins head and followed the instructions completely but it always ends up like a French braid
You might be getting too much hair of the newly grabbed sections. When taking a new section of hair to cross, make it a small section
