This historic recording of bossa nova at its height of sophistication is not to be missed.
It’s a magnificent testament to the European tour that, during the autumn of 1978, brought together an exceptional group of artists: no less than Vinícius de Moraes, Tom Jobim, Toquinho and Miúcha.
On October 18, the magicians, along with a quartet of musician friends, made a stop at Lugano, Switzerland, where the audience and RSI cameras were eagerly awaiting them. Seated at center stage, Vinícius smokes and drinks whiskey, which he has dubbed “man's best friend, it’s the dog in a bottle.” He’s completely at home, and the concert, itself, glows with the warmth of a family reunion. Georgiana de Moraes, daughter of Vinícius, can be seen on percussion. Toquinho is the poet’s faithful guitarist, who had known Jobim for some twenty years. As for Miúcha, the former
spouse of João Gilberto and the mother of Bebel, she is also the sister of Chico Buarque, several of whose songs are performed that evening. Their collaboration is whole-hearted, as is their mutual admiration, as demonstrated when Vinícius welcomes Jobim by comparing him to Jimmy Webb, Burt Bacharach, Astor Piazzolla and Michel Legrand. The repertoire is exceptional, punctuated by potpourris of compositions by Dorival Caymmi and-for the finale-Baden Powell. All of the great bossa nova classics are on the program, from Desafinado to The Girl from Ipanema, and they’re interpreted in the most delicious way possible. A must.
