    I saw this game (The Voyages of Marco Polo) on rahdo's zomerspel feature and was intrigued, although it looks it might take some time and effort to setup. Thank you for playing through this game for us and explaining the rules along the way!

    In 28:20- 28:23, why the blue player doesn't need to pay $5 additional fee from the oasis across the lake to Beijing, the ability of one step move shouldn't pay the travel fee of travel action but should need to pay the additional fee for camel or money which stated on the English translated rule P1 symbol section.

    @36:00 The red player completes a contract that gives him a black die and then later in the same turn buys a black die for 3 camels. I thought you could only acquire 1 black die per turn?

      paxton73 Good question. As far as I understand the translated rule book, the restriction for acquiring black dice is related to the "additional action" where a player pays 3 camels to purchase a black die. They are only allowed to take this specific additional action once per turn. Completing contracts is also an additional action, and can be executed as many times as is possible on a turn. The rewards earned for completing contracts don't appear to be restricted. As a result, a player should be able to acquire multiple black dice on one turn, with the caveat that only one of them can come from the pay 3 camels additional action (the other black dice would come from contracts or city bonus tiles).

    Also, I would like to know does the additional action: 3 camels exchange to black die, but after roll it, could it be used immediately on the same turn? because play black die is additional action but can be taken multiple on the same turn

      Joseph Chan The black die can be used on the same turn it is acquired if it was acquired before the player's main action. If it is acquired after their main action, then it can only be used on a subsequent turn. A player is only ever allowed to activate one action space per turn through their main action. Sometimes the main action results in giving the player the resources necessary to take a black die after their main action. This is valuable if they are concerned that other players will claim all of the black dice for the round if they wait until the beginning of their next turn. I hope this is helpful.

    At the start of the 4th (last) round, shouldn't green only get one start of round bonus from the trading posts (3 points or 5 coins) instead of both?

      Last page: each player receives bonuses from each small city in which he or she has a trading post, see supplement.

    I have a question on the character that does not need to roll his dice. Can he get any camels or money compensation if he uses pips equaling less than 15?

      He doesn't roll his dice at all. No compensation for him.

    Do you feel that the 5 turn limit ends the game prematurely? it seems that you don't quite get to do enough?

    • @vawcer
      @vawcer  8 лет назад +1

      I think it's a good limit. This isn't the kind of game where you want enough time to be able to go everywhere within a single playthrough. This would limit the replayability. You always want players to have to make tough and interesting choices in any kind of game. In Marco Polo one of them related to length is should I go here or here, because there isn't enough time to do both. Another one relates to your limited pool of dice each round. It's a very stimulating game, and I think the limited rounds helps that while also restricting the total game time.

    Thanks for the great runthrough! I hope to see more!
    My one hesitation about Marco Polo is that the players powers don't seem even at all. I guessed that red would win even before you started. :(

      Matthew White Thanks Matthew! Regarding your hesitation, while I can't say for certain whether the player powers are ultimately balanced or not, I will suggest that you don't take this playthrough as proof of that either way. I definitely did not play each player as optimally I could have. I'm not particularly good are juggling multiple strategies as I record, and in a real game each player will be able to far more effective using 100% focus on themselves. I think that will balance it out more than what you see here. Total balance, I'm not sure, so if that bugs you it might be a yellow flag. I will say that the game is very fun, and for me that's paramount.

      Thanks for answering.
      I guess I could play without the player powers, but I think I'll wait a bit on this and see what the fan reaction is when it hits retail. Thanks for the runthrough!
