I am intensely curious about what i perceive as an overlap between hildegard of bingen's exorcism and that of the ritualism displayed in bdsm. in both, the subject centers themself within a shadow play depicting a totality of their world: hildegard's exorcism leverages the cultural understanding of god and the world as described in christian dogma to give faces to the forces acting upon the subject, bdsm similarly acting as a microcosm of our modern drama of the world as a place of tense but supposedly mutually beneficial domination and subversion. a recalcitrant demon and a bratty submissive resemble one another. however in exporcism the demon is seen as an interloper to be drawn out, whereas within d&s the subject is portraying their own identity being strung between the recalcitrance and ultimate submission. the dominant additionally seeks to draw out the "good" "obedient" person within the subject, whereas the exorcist is attempting to draw out the "malicious" persona of a demon. ultimately i am fascinated by the way that narratives have to be in place for certain forms of healing or catharsis to take place. thanks for reading this, it means i wasn't censored for making vague reference to sexuality. sigh lol.

My mom was an ex-nun, nurse and catechesis teacher and she told me that any Christian can baptise another person, but only as a last resource thing, and voluntarily too. Like, someone is dying and the priest is kilometres away in a big winter storm, and that person says "Dude, I wasn't baptised, but I believe in Josh." You can say "Cool bro, here you go!". You say the ritual formula and that's it, a brand new Christian.
On the "anyone can do a baptism as long as they follow the proper rituals" thing, my dad actually did this with my brother as a form of light protest against his inlaws. My grandfather is a 2nd generation Irish immigrant, his mom went through a lot of crap when she got here, and he went through a lot of crap for being who he was as well, so he was pretty attached to certain aspects of our Irish identity, most specifically our Catholicism. To stop being Catholic was basically to stop being Irish in his eyes. Both of my parents went to very strict Catholic schools though and were pretty disenchanted with Catholicism, so we were never religious, although we did the big sacraments and put on a good face for my grandparents. Apparently though, this was a matter of some contention for my dad, and so, while he caved and had me baptized in a Catholic church like my grandparents wanted, by the time my brother was born, he had apparently reached this same conclusion regarding what Catholic doctrine said about the authority of the church in this matter, and so he baptized my brother in the bathtub himself, following the whole baptism ritual just like a priest would so that he could fight my grandfather on any claims that my parents never had my brother baptized. Being a kid, I never got to see what the fallout from this looked like, but I imagine my grandfather wasn't particularly happy. My brother never got an "official" baptism though, so it looks like my dad ultimately won that argument.
FYI, A baby is baptized as an infant in the Romish Church by holding the infant over holy water with one hand and using the other hand to sprinkle holy water over the head. Any layperson can baptize, marry or conduct any ceremony in the Church, if, and only if, there is no other clergy or religious person around. Once it is done, they still have to file for a special dispensation from the Bishop basically to let the world know that, "Hey! This person is now baptized, married, confessed their sins to me before they died, etc." All of this has to be done with everyone involves' sober consent. Additionally, almost all rules and regulations for the Church can be disregarded in times of hardships or life threatening circumstances. For example, someone who's a diabetic doesn't have to follow the extensive fasting that Catholics have to follow during Lent. If you have any questions about this stuff (and don't want someone to try to convert you) ask me. One of my degrees is in Comparative Religions. I believe in educating people without using religion as a form of torture.
FWIW there is a translation of the Flagellum Daemonum sold by Weiser Press. Also of interest is Francis Young's "A History of Exorcism in Catholic Christianity" where he talks more about the development of exorcism rites. Though part of his main thesis, if I recall, was that for most of Medieval Europe deliverance from possession was focused on saints shrines. Liturgical exorcism beyond Baptism was a later development closer to the time of the books you're discussing.
Catholic here - Just found your channel. Love learning about Judaism as Jewish traditions are the foundation of my church. Yes, anyone can baptize anyone with whatever liquid you have at hand. The joke of baptism with milk is a thing. The purpose of understanding is that even a person at death can receive the cleaning of original sin. As baptism cleans away the original sin of man there is still a scar of the original sin until we die and go to purgatory when we are finally cleansed. That is why going to church weekly is important, as continual communion with God will help heal the scar. It is also why the baptismal fountain is found at the entrance of the church. Upon entering the church you dip your finger into the fountain and make the sign of the cross or paint the water in the shape of the cross on your forehead. It is like baptizing yourself weekly. This is why Catholics see getting baptized in other faiths as an acceptable first sacrament into the church. Also, why there were so many schisms in the church, on the debate of when to baptize a person, because as a baby you can not give consent. But earlier theologians preached that without baptism you can not enter the gates of heaven. Which is why infants were baptized and continue to be. The common belief now is that if you are an infant that is unbaptized then you won't go to hell because of that. Because of the mercy of God and Jesus' death which is the end all forgiveness of all sins. Which is very new within the Catholic church and some traditional clergy do not like it. As for the statement of marriage. Marriage is a sacrament. I have not heard that marriage can be performed outside the body of the church before. But I can see the argument that you don't need a church or priest to perform the sacrament. The rest of the sacraments require a priest to perform because of the laying of the hands which you can track historically from Jesus to Peter and then to the rest of holy clergymen. Baptism was made outside of Jesus and Jesus was Baptized by John the Baptist. Did not originate with Jesus. Same with Marriage, it did not originate with Jesus. So, the argument for the sacrament to not take place in the church can stand its ground. I just never heard of it. Same as the argument that it does not require a priest to get married. I just have never heard of a marriage accepted by the Catholic church that occurred outside the church and by a non-clergyman. For instance, I would be considered a bastard within my church because my parents got married outside of the church. But to society, I am not a bastard because they were legally married at the time when I was born. But at the same time, the church recognizes that my parents are married when we attend mass by referring to my mom with my dad's last name and though the mail.

Oh my, very interesting to hear about how exorcism took place... I'm a devinely guided exorcist..spirit releaser. I'm so happy my clients are not beaten. But they don't always know that I'm taking out dark force entities. It is a very soft approach that works in most cases.
They come to me with a request for help. Even then I ask their higher self for consent. Is it playing on the dark side if I prevent telling certain people ( very il, old, frail or just closed off) that I take away an ugly demon ...is it playing on the dark side if we adapt the message so it becomes possible to help people, preventing worse.
@@TheEsotericaChannel To the contrary, those are both vital sacraments, one required to chasten the bowel demons, and the other to hasten their departure. Gustatory autoflagellation, perhaps? 😆

@@TheEsotericaChannel In Romanian Orthodox Christianity, exorcisms are known to happen to this day, and sometimes they end up in newspapers. Largely the Prayers of Saint Basil of Cesarea! I might delve into that!
Yep, all the Abrahamic faiths have seen a huge uptick in exorcisms in the past couple decades. Prompting real changes in the Vatican and in Haredi Jewish communities - exorcist looks like a more promising career path than programmer at this point :)
You mention the Exorcisms since Vatican II being in the Vernacular. In some cases maybe yes. But I have seen several recent prominent Exorcists talk about how much more effective that Latin is in the Rite. They even explain why that is. But as a result for the most part modern Exorcism in the Church is performed in Latin
@@TheEsotericaChannel Yes indeed. There was a dramatic shift to the Vernacular after the Council, which was utterly stupid an misguided. But it happened anyways. Then in 2000 they released a New and undated Ritual for Exorcism. The problem tho, was that it didn’t work! Some very experienced and prominent Exorcists including Fr. Gabriel Amorth, went to the Vatican to express their frustration over this. As a result there was an Indult issued giving Exorcists their own discretion as to which Ritual to use. I saw an interview with an Exorcist some time ago and he talked about it and said that as a result he and all of the other Exorcists he knew only used the Old Ritual and in Latin. Such is the “Spirit” of Vatican II and the dumbing down of everything like the Holy Mass. The so called Novus Ordo will some day maybe a century from now be abolished and banned. I’d say if anyone or anything ever needed an Exorcism it would be the Roman Curia. The Smoke of Satan is in the Church and the swirls about around the Altar of God…
"Get Lost, Satan" sounds like a book that would have one of those cheesy covers of a person standing cross-armed and back-to-back with Jesus. One of them would be giving a small red devil the boot.
8:40: I note that Dr. Sledge mentions not approving of baptizing people without their consent, but doesn't say anything about involuntary marriage. Either this means Dr. Sledge doesn't think there's anything wrong with marrying people who didn't ask for it, or it's a lot harder to complete a ritual designed for adults without their verbal consent. 19:20: I hear that's a feature of the Latin language. 29:45: Either this ritual was regularly abridged, or the 17th-century Catholic Church made some of the largest candle orders in history. 40:15: I bet a bunch of demons are real sticklers about using proper Roman Latin. Which would probably be a problem for would-be necromancers, but a boon for linguistic historians.
You can marry without the consent of the people being married (as much as women of that time could consent to anything really) but you can and most often do baptisms at least in the Catholic Church without the consent of infants because well infants.

Music references always on point!
much waited video in Esoterica
👍🏽🔥🔥👍🏽
Thank you yet another informative and entertaining episode. Keep up the good work!
Theology nerds watching Justin flash his collection of middle age necromancy manuals: 😮
It’s our equivalent of a Maserati and $100,000 in a rap video.
we need a dedicated video just on why buried treasure was such a big deal
When I open YT and see some notifications; read the headlines of videos released in notifications, this channel's video titles stand out the most lol.
That translation is non-academic and incomplete.
I got my Clerical Necromantic Underground longsleeve! It's pretty sweet!
Love all your videos, they always pop up when I need something to do. 👍
29:52 glad you showed the pop up, otherwise I wouldn't have believed it.
Gotta love Justin's dedication to conjure demons on the channel - risking so much is worth at least making it Patreon only :D
Listening in the background demons being summoned fits so well to working late on the Friday evening🖤
Thanks for helping me know a wee bit more about this rabbit hole. Off topic, i dig your attitude. You remind me of my brother in law, only his field of expertise is geology and water sciences. Still, you have his mannerisms and deadpan humor and it's very comfortable.
You, Sir, are a delight. I love your takes on the various books and your little asides gave me genuine laughs. For the most part I try to avoid anything dealing with the occult or supernatural but I really enjoyed this strange recommendation from the algorithm.
Wake up babe, new Esoterica video on summoning demons just dropped
Dr. Sledge, I love your channel more than I can say but this is by far my favorite episode you’ve done. Your jokes and silly comparisons really help me to understand the incredible amount of knowledge you’re putting on RUclips…for free and that’s on Josh of Nazareth 🙏🏻☝🏻
You’re the best man. Great Work!!!!
I enjoy these lectures immensely.
Dr. Sledge: "Most importantly-"
Me: "He's gonna talk buried treasure, isn't he?"
Also, I'm definitely going to spell þicc with a thorn from now on.
Thanks for such an interesting discussion, Justin! Dude, your humor makes me chuckle.🌞
20:50 my headache is gone. Thank you ☺️
babe wake up, esoterica just uploaded
Thank you for taking us on this journey with you.
Love this. History is just a continuation of ideas. Awesome to see the total connection between things. It’s all layered influence. 🎉
if i was friends with this guy i would host dinner parties for the sole purpose of inviting him with the expectation that, at some point in the night, he would dominate all conversations. i would purchase a special arm chair that would act as his soapbox and i would keep the drinks flowing to the room so everyone's eyes and ears are glued on him. what a delightful joy this channel is in this mediocre lifetime
Trust me, you wouldn't want that. ;)
Well I'm now completely obsessed with Esoterica, thanks a lot
I like how the intro starts at 3:33! Is that intentional?
Ha! Nah, I don't think I could even much plan something like

People who say humorous things with a straight face are the funniest lol Love your humor in these valuable videos. So many blunt questions but I’ll watch to see if the answers are in here first💜
Oh my, very interesting to hear about how exorcism took place...
I'm a devinely guided exorcist..spirit releaser.
I'm so happy my clients are not beaten. But they don't always know that I'm taking out dark force entities. It is a very soft approach that works in most cases.
Isn't a foundational principle seeking consent? Absent informed consent, you might be playing on the dark side
A couple times it felt like I was pooping out a demon, now I know the truth. Thanks Esoterica!
glad to help....but lay off the 2 am whiskey and taco bell
@@TheEsotericaChannel To the contrary, those are both vital sacraments, one required to chasten the bowel demons, and the other to hasten their departure. Gustatory autoflagellation, perhaps? 😆
CLERICAL NECROMANTIC UNDERGROUND 🔥🔥🔥
I used to think that studying religion was not interesting and religious people were dull. Well dr. Sledge has proven me wrong. His videos are super interesting. The dr. himself is an amazing storyteller who keeps your attention by making these little witty jokes. As an atheist I must say that I have never been so excited of religion before.
Now I'm worried about my milk, butter and cheese. I've never exorcized them.
If you're old enough, the Imperial Margarine and Parkay Butter commercials in the '80s would make one think that the products were possessed...!?! ;)
Just eat them, and poop out the bad guys.
Medieval priest: demon be gone, but before you go can you tell me how to find BURIED TREASURE.
Can you blame them?
Right up my alley! Very well done!
High praise, especially coming from you!
These are very interesting!!! I’m like a child watching a movie with your videos mister
Thanks for reading the passage. I received a lot from it.
Very informative! Yur a smart dude
Another walk off home run. I think I’m going to do the patreon thing. I’m just starting to feel guilty now.
You should make a react video about movie/TV show magic rites. Even tho those are not as popular any more. Still, it would be great
Thank you for this video! It put exorcism in its historical and esoteric context. I greatly appreciate it.
Thank you Sir.
I'm told by people in the know that's more true in the past 30 years than in the first decades after V2
@@TheEsotericaChannel Guess my joke wasn't as funny as I hoped.

I find this super interesting. I was attracted to magik as a younger man, but mainly because I wanted to understand if there was “anything “ after we die. Having found out there is, and evil is most definitely real, I became a Christian. However theses topics still intrigue me to this day, and as long as I’m not practicing I think it’s ok to research this stuff. Am I wrong? Right?
Same boat.....There is always a quest for knowledge of mysterious topics....but ..christians shoulď know their book better lest they fall for trickery of the enemy...

I just tried to join a facebook group for Jewitches, but they wouldn't let me join because I was raised with messianic Jews, despite not being one myself, and despite that this group publicly professes to embrace the "diversity of Jewish practises and faith" and intersectionality and syncretism, and that they accept members who are still in the process of conversion... only to have them privately tell me they're strictly anti-messianic, that those weren't even Real Jews at all, and that I need to go get more properly Jewish somewhere else before I can join their club. How would you advise someone to learn latin pretty much solely for the purpose of historical research of texsts like these?
