"Perfectionism Vs Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD)"
With the increasing awareness about mental health and illness there has also been increase in the use of terminologies like panic, serotonin, depression, phobia, etc.
However their use is sometimes inappropriate, like calling a person with mood swings "Bipolar" or calling people who prefer orderliness and neatness as "OCD". Some of these are serious mental illnesses and their loose usage should be avoided.
Perfectionists often themselves feel they have OCD. However there are two major differences between them.
1. Perfectionism is a personality trait, OCD is a mental illness.
2. Perfectionism as a trait may lead to distress, OCD leads to dysfunction.
People with OCD, have obsessions (repetitive thoughts) and display compulsive behaviors (repetitive actions, sometimes mental) which leads to both occupational and social dysfunction.
This illness maybe difficult to perceive but for people who suffer it, it's a reality.
We must acknowledge their pain and respect their struggle, which is why we must avoid using the term OCD loosely.
Let's get educated, seek help and together lets stop the stigma.
