- Join me as I take you on an in-depth look at the solo experience for Lords of Ragnarok from Awaken Realms and desgined by Adam Kwapinski with a solo mode by Adam and David Turczi.
This Norse based Meeps on a Map game is the successor to Lords of Hellas and it's a very heavy experience.
I also discuss my thoughts on why only 50% of AR's output works for me. Maybe you agree, maybe what I don't like totally hits the spot for you?
Lords of Ragnarok is currently shipping to backers so, is the juice of the Solo experience worth the squeeze? Let me know your thoughts in the comments.

I have watched 100's of different board game videos these last 2 weeks trying to pick the best big games to jump into the hobby with - and this video is the best I've watched. You go over just the right amount of detail to understand the aspects of the game, show the components up close, and include great commentary/discussion points - Everything I want to help me decide if a game is for me or not. Well done
Thanks for your kind words and for watching.
At the beginning AW started to replicate FFGs best years of design. While FFG was doing oversimplified and more abstracted designs, AW was doing a Runewars tribute as Lords of Hellas mostly is. I also agree with you about their campaign designs, I felt the same way about Tainted Grail, although I´m waiting to give it another try with those new rules. Overall I think many of us miss FFGs designs, their golden era was what I love about this hobby.
Thanks for your review, I´ll keep an eye on LoR :)
Greetings from Argentina!
I went pretty much all-in on this and was surprised by how small the extra boxes of stuff are-- this is def NOT a Kallax shelf hog. Thx for the review- looking forward to trying it out solo!
I agree this is my solo game of the year so far too - it’s an epic game that feels like you are up against intelligent AI
Thanks for the review. You make very good points about Awaken Realm games. Agree with your points about the rulebooks. Again, thanks for sharing your passion and excitement for Lords of Ragnarok and your sincere evaluation of the board game experience.
As an all in backer, I would love to have battle card and hunt cards in a different art and decks. The game seems a Dwellings of Eldervale for heavyer gamers. Love to fight the Monsters, lots of feedly things and procedures as Mr. Kwapinski works in Frostpunk. It's also why I buy the game, I can't resist to a Kwapinski and Turczi team. It's a sure guess as a gamer. Thanks Mark, I love the way you work. Cheers :p
I agree with you, i 2 want to love the heavy AR games but cant seem to take the time and energy to play them even though i also have the big ones. Same goes to your perspective on the issue with rules and grinding, i totally agree. I am happy to hear you enjoy this as a solo game, i might put it on the table very soon. LoR was a no brainer for me since i love LoH and hoped LoR would be as great as i found LoH to be.
Just watched your Brook city review and decided to check out a recent and review and I wasn’t disappointed. So cool to see how far the channel has come from a production standpoint in 3 years
Thank you - those early videos were shot on iPhone 😂

both of us kinda feel the same way about awaken realms games it seems i also have the issue with the big campaign games they produce... great video mark Stay Hexy!
The level of cringe is through the roof. Have you really build a brand around your nickname…that only you use? The mind boggles
I've been avoiding the large campaign games from Awakened Realms for the reasons you mention but I had to get ISS Vanguard as the theme really interested me. I do quite like that you can split your play time by doing a planet exploration then taking a break and then coming back to do the ship management to the point you launch for another planet and take a break again. It works well at splitting your game time down to an hour per stint. Avoids the grind and if you fancy a longer stint you can make sure that the ship management is the end of the play so the best bit is at the end. Games with tons of plastic is also a big turn off for me.
I have very similar thoughts to you on AR products. Even Lords of Ragnarok was a bit underwhelming. I think the best game they have put out recently is the Great Wall.
Thanks for the review; my concern in this type of shorter game (90-120 minutes as you mentioned), is replay ability. Do the expansions allow you to expand this longer in a more campaign-like manner?
The replay-ability is as it’s is for most non-campaign board games, the dynamic nature means no two games are ever the same. The expansions add additional gameplay components but there is no ability to string together a campaign, the structure wouldn’t allow it. It doesn’t need to be a campaign. I haven’t even touched any expansion content yet and I’m still massively enjoying the game after multiple plays.
@@NotBoredGaming many thanks for your input.
I whole heartedly agree with the Awaken Realms critique. They have some great ideas, but other parts are downright awful. I just can’t justify spending $100+ when this is the case. I do really want to try out Lord of Ragnarok because of David’s involvement
47.03 'from a solo perspective not the end of the world' 😂
