A little known fact about Community's original run, the Nielson Ratings system, and DVR tech that was still relatively new at the time is that while "Big Bang Theory" was the highest rated live-watched show, Community was the most-viewed TIME-SHIFTED show at the same time. The catch was Nielson didn't count the time-shifted views in their reports with as much weight as live-watched. That tells me that a lowest-common-denominator show about pretend nerds like Big Bang Theory was only popular with people too dumb to program their DVRs while Community, a high-concept show that appealed to actual nerds was being recorded faithfully and re-watched numerous times....as they are intended to be.
Oh yeah no doubt about it, that was what stood out to me as I researched this. All the "easy watch/lowest common denominator" shows were rated much higher compared to the critical knockouts like Community and Parks and Rec. It's sad that the Nielsen ratings were one of the factors that led to Community’s downfall.
The first episode I caught was Advanced Documentary Filmmaking in season 4. I liked it immediately, it wasn't like anything else on tv. Never met anyone else that liked it though, it's a real tragedy. I'm surprised it never got a resurgence in popularity when Harmon became more of a household name with Rick and Morty.
Seeing the view count on this genuinely made me gasp! You deserve so much more, and with the fairly recent success of your Dark Souls video, I really hope this happens!
You know, whenever I would see Community while scrolling through Netflix, I would group it in with shows like Modern Family, Arrested Development, Superstore etc. where I have never watched them, but can still assume that they're a post-laugh track era kind of sit-com. Granted, I don't know if these shows are good or not, and I don't necessarily dislike that style, it just didn't interest me. But then, I watched it through some reason or another and realised, "Dang, this is actually pretty good. Is this where that clip in my Recommended came from?" Then as the series went on I started to appreciate all the little details, references, homages, design choices that I really feel are the backbone of Community. It's a really good show, my favourite characters are Pierce and Troy because ha ha funny.
I actually have a somewhat similar story. Like I remember watching early seasons of Community and thinking "...is this supposed to be funny or....?". I never made it past Season 2, and was firmly on the Parks/Office train until later on. Then for some reason it clicked.
@@ViviVarietyno doubt, keep up the good work and the algorithm will get your content out to a wider audience, you have excellent editing skills and a great voice for narration and both your analysis and the way you script it is fantastic
I'd say so, since it's a "situational comedy". I suppose you could get into semantics and all about what a sitcom is, but if someone describes AC as a sitcom I wouldn't even bat an eye. Hell, I'd definitely refer to something like Gintama as a sitcom well. Or at the very least, very similar in style to a sitcom lol
Season 2 is a masterpiece. Most of the episodes are pure classics.
Couldn't agree more. It's such an awesome season from beginning to end, and my personal favorite season of Community.

I want to see chloroform as a plot device in more mainstream television.

I appreciate the sentiment, it means a lot as a small content creator. We all gotta start somewhere though!

Does Assassination Classroom count as a sitcom?

Is Britta the only character to ever shit her pants on tv?
Maybe, actually lol
