In this video Canadian Guitarist/producer Dean Wolfe reacts to Mindset by Gacharic Spin from Japan.
A LITTLE ABOUT ME: I'm Dean Wolfe, a mostly self-taught Canadian guitarist/composer/multi-instrumentalist/singer/producer/performer. I started out as a full time musician on the road at age 17 for two years, but went part-time ever since while holding day careers including as a chef and in spiritual health care while raising a family.
I've recorded hundreds of my own songs- many being used in media and award winning documentaries etc. I've been in several bands including a prog/jazz fusion act nFuze, performing in International Jazz festivals and jazz clubs. I abandoned the prog genre more or less back in the 1990s but have returned to it now with vigour a full 30 years later- so much prog I've ignored and quite frankly didn't have any idea about. My own prog band was rejected by record labels as "too progressive' in the late 80s, so i detoured into grunge, pop and alternative instead (then folk and acoustic fingerstyle guitar and ambient electric as well).

She plays bass as well, before she founded GS with Koga she was the bassist in The Spade Six, a blues rock band who were also great. IIRC she was bassist in Armeria as well. You can see her playing keys here and there also. Oh and everything in this video ruclips.net/video/HbXmA7pvHbU/видео.html

I am in love with the bassist, F Chopper Koga! Her name is even so cool. Love these ladies and yes, the tables have turned and I am loving it! Undeniable talent in this band and I love the up beat, high energy music and performance! Thank you for reacting to this video.

I actually hear some Prince here too. About what you said about the tables that turns, I often say that NOW I finally understand girls screaming during Beatlemania 😉. No favorite in Gacharic Spin, I love and respect them all so much - they're highly talented musicians, extremely great entertainers too and finding and "educate" Angie 1/3 (pink hair) to become their new "image" was a great move (they incorporated her while she was still in high school at 17, and schooled her on many instruments and singing - and at 19 now she learned quickly!).

You will also hear some Chili Peppers, here and there, in Koga's base style. Also an 80s prog fusion-Jazz outfit called Casiopea is an obvious influence (Japanese band). Also, Koga was asked what her favorite bass player was, Les Claypool.

In this video you can see Hana (the original drummer of the band), a couple of years ago they hired a new drummer (Yuri), to allow Hana to play the guitar and share the front stage.
But due to Yuri's maternity leave, Hana has had to temporarily resume her drumming duties.
You can see the entire band interacting live on their 10th anniversary DVD.
    P.S. I think that their new video "I wish I", features a male drummer.👍

I've been getting into "female" Japanese bands for a couple years now, and although for years my tastes have been hard rock/80's metal & prog rock, but I've noticed my tastes have widened quite a bit as I got older. After seeing this band name come up for awhile I didn't watch anything until recently, this was the 1st one I watched, and was blown away. The musicianship alone is astounding, but the groove hooked me. Yes, I like Hana too (the drummer), I think she's a cutie, but she's a multi-talented musician too. She played drums, guitar, keys, and I don't know what else. I find that pretty sexy too. 😁 I recommend checking out the live video of this too, equally impressive.

    Great reaction Dean!
“MindSet” is definitely one of my favorite song of the year. Gacharic Spin are going to release a MV for their new song “I wish I” on August 25th.
I think my favorite member is Koga (the bassist) but Tomo-zo (the guitarist) is close second and Hana (the drummer/guitarist/and more) is also very close. I love Oreo Reona (the keyboardist) too. Well, I love them all I guess 😅
Hana made a cover of Nirvana during the pandemic, playing a bunch of instruments. It’s so fun and good.

Glad you recognize their talent. Some of my country/classic rock/even indie bandmates don’t get it, too pop, too soft, too not English, I dunno. They’re the best for my money.
They’ve mentioned they run on 17yr old power (guitar TomoZo joined ‘09 age 20, but 15yrolds! came aboard in 2013, and they’ve had someone under 21 ever since), so I hope they still are this high energy this winter, once pink haired Angie reaches 20…. Of course, the rest can hang, despite them all soon to follow Hana beyond 35…
You mentioned Rush, I personally thinktheir title track Gold Dash is Rush-like (if they let a 17yr old rapper take them to a rave), in that it has multiple time sigs and switches, but is still singable; same album as the first song you heard with Angie & with Yuri on drums (on maternity leave for this latest vid Mindset (&whole album?, due soon? I s’pose))
But first I think you should hear their heavier reworking of their early dance tune, which did have a small (now majorly expanded) prog middle break. Juicy Beats, live 2019. Angie was about to enter her senior year of high school, and the tiny drummer Yuri is adult, around 25, about a year before starting her family… ruclips.net/video/pObpM-MNpVk/видео.html

You're feelings on this band are similar to mine, I've been following them for years now and they just keep impressing me so much. It's not just technicality and musicianship, it's fun and unpretentious song writing with a clear focus on a great melody and beat which they build up the technicality around where appropriate.
If you're interested they've also got a video of them performing this track live on their RUclips channel. They're also releasing a new MV in 2 days for the lead track off their upcoming album. The tracks called "I Wish I" and it's nuts - keep an eye peeled for it when it drops in a few days!

Definitely one of their best songs--I haven't been able to stop listening since it was released. My Japanese isn't that great but, from what I can pick up, the songs seems to be about having to fake it to try and fit in with the different school clicks, or rather being tired of them and just go ahead and be yourself--live your life--"ikiteru no," (生きてるの) "I'm alive/living" It's all your mindset.
Don't worry Dean, I've got a soft spot for Hana too🥰 But Angie (pick hair) is a cutie too!
You should check out Ningen Isu's new song, "Toshishun"

Hi Dean. I just listened to a great French-Vietnamese guitar player Nguyên Lê and his version of Come Together by The Beatles. Two things: 1. Come Together itself is very progressive song. 2. This is the best cover version of the song. Nguyên Lê makes one of the most played Beatles-songs totally his own with a great style and insight. Double progressive! He turns the song to a Vietnamese-pop-rock-fusion collage that no one has heard or imagined before. Please react to this, it's a jaw-dropper. As is the whole album Songs of Freedom (2011). It's the best cover album I've ever heard with covers of Bob Marley, The Beatles, Cream etc. This song and this album is something that your channel is all about!

Finally someone took notice of how unnecessary the "all-female" thing is. Also, good point on the table turning. Remember how off the reservation women got over Freddie Mercury? I never understood that at the time, but now I fully do. 😍
There's a live version of this, someone already commented here, I'm only reinforcing it so your crush on hana (the drummer) increases! 😂
Nice job! I love your insights!

Ah, Gacharic Spin, i can't recall a single song of theirs that didn't 'do it' for me, they have this knack for making everything they do look and feel super fun. I did enjoy DOLL$BOXX a lot as well, but it is awesome that they once again have their own singer. As talented as Fuki is, she has a *lot* of projects going on at any given time it seems.
As far as picking a favorite member goes, it's very difficult, they're all incredible in their way, but I'd have to say I'm a Koga guy :)

Great reaction and I'll take F-Chopper, her bass playing is amazing, but all of them are great. Proving since 2009 that you can follow your dream and make great music and never be locked into a box. GS V3.0 is, I think, the best version so far with the addition of Angie and Yuri and I can't wait for their new album (in Sept I think). I think that Japan is probably the only country that has the right atmosphere and attitude for all female bands to exist and thrive. Music education is not considered unimportant, but encouraged in school. Marty Friedman (Megadeth) moved to Japan in 2003 because he said that's where the most innovative and interesting music was being made.

That song is a masterpiece. One of the songs I can't listen to just once and have to repeat at immediately right after I heard it.
If you also listen to pop-rock, give Senkyakubanrai by Daoko x Miyavi a shot. Miyavi is a famous Japanese guitarist and Daoko a pop singer and Mindset immediately reminded of that one because of the guitar style and sound. Since the song is about 1,5 years old now, I wouldn't be surprised, if Mindset was inspired by it. Mindset still clearly wins for me, but Senkyakubanrai is also a great song, although a lot more poppy:
