We have tried Pork Belly before but only slowly roasted. Castacán has such a unique cooking method & flavour. Have you tried Castacán? We would love to know if you liked it or would want to try it !!
The "heart" of carnitas in Mexico is in the state of Michoacán. Quiroga is the most famous town because of the handmade guitars and Carnitas! It's a must visit. Next time at Siete Lenguas ask if they have "montalayo". It's part of the carnitas menu.
Thanks so very much for your comment Fernando! This is very interesting to us. Ricky is already researching the town of Quioga ! We shall definitely question our friends at siege lenguas about ‘Montalayo’, this word/food is also new to us. Sooo much to learn lol 😂 Thanks for watching
2:42 Siete Lenguas is a word play, the original phrase is Siete Leguas which is the name of Pancho Villa's mare, means Seven Leagues (antique distance measurement) and a few things carry that name, like a brand of boots and a brand of tequila. Siete Lenguas sounds almost the same but it means Seven Tongues.
We are drooling! We've never heard of this local speciality - please sign us up right now! Thank you for the additional information about castacan because this is something we'd definitely pursue in our travels! It looked like wee Guinness was intrigued by castacan too 😉!
Love the video and the extra animations that comes up randomly. The food looks very delicious and can't wait to taste all that food. Do you take day trips to Cancun or Merida? Just wondering
Thanks so much Victor ! Yes, we are in Cancun fairly regularly (we really should make some videos there) but we have not yet been to Merida. Whenever we are in the Yucatan we tend to visit smaller towns but it is on our list of places to visit. Thanks for watching
Just got back from Mérida. There is an amazing cotton garment shop in the McDonald's plaza at the roundabout. You can take the tole hwy or drive through the local villages.
Hola amigos!! Super cool video we have had a lot of experience with kastacan as well and we absolutely love it.Its great see Guinness hover around all of that porky goodness. We are definitely missing the beauty of PM. Keep em coming 🙏🏻
@@RickRackTravels I know what you mean. We left the UK for Canada in 1998 and those are the little things that we miss. Visiting PM is somewhere we think we’d like to set roots in retirement and hope to visit this year. The. We can try out all these foods you’ve been showing us. Take care
Food so delicious and affordable! I love that Modelo Negra it's awesome beer. I can only imagine the impact of the new Mayan Train for Tourism in the Yucatan peninsula. I love cenotes. Thanks again for an awesome video.
Yes Modelo Negra is a great beer! We are watching the progress of the Maya train with interest we are all waiting to see what is going to happen with that project!
Hi Jeff, Olive oil is sold everywhere in this area so we would expect that many restaurants use it for cooking. For deep frying they probably use vegetable oil which is also very available. Some of the more traditional Restaurants particularly in La Colonia will use lard for frying particularly pork lard which is very traditional.
@@RickRackTravels since ya'll living in colonial side how often do you go to the beach? I assume it must be a hassle since limited roads..And what are the main hobbies for foreigners in the area other than going to the beach? I admire your courage moving from Canada to mexico...
Hi Jeff, the beach is only a five minute drive from where we live. It's only one road in but it's never that busy so getting to the beach is really easy. It can be accessed from one other road but it would make no sense for us in our location to go that way. We try to go at least once a week but at the minute we are in Saragassum season so we have not been for a few weeks. Apart from that the ex pats meet most mornings to play pickleball here in La Colonia. There is also horseshoes on the beach every Thursday and Trivia on Friday nights at various different restaurants.
@@RickRackTravels cool.SO summer time would not be a good time to visit due to sargassum/high heat? Months from Sept on, should be ok regarding sargassum and weather?
@@jeffyeah4256 Hi Jeff, the rainy season runs from Mid May until mid November. It is also very hot in August and September. The sargassum situation is changing each year. This year it came early in February and is particularly bad right now. After a storm or a hurricane it usually breaks up and you can enjoy the beach but it comes in waves and then it can be fine for a while. It’s hard to state with certainty when it will be totally clear for Sargassum but usually December,January February are the best months. We would love to say for sure but it’s an ever changing situation.
You guys are awesome must be that Ulster personality. I will be down for a 4th time come June. Is that Refugee spot off the beach and towards the port/docks, any good? The place that does marketing with a dude in a Big foot costume.
Hi Tyler, haha thank you so much. Yes we have eaten at the Refugio restaurant a few times. We really enjoy the tortilla soup and a cheese fondue starter they serve there (I forget what it’s called). Nice location because it is so breezy. That’s great you are coming for your fourth time! It’s a fab town

In Mexico do they, restaurants, cook everything with vegetable oil? no beef fat or olive oil?
