No, but you have to understand. This film came out the same day as The Dark Knight. That was the competition. I remember because I was at sleep away camp that summer and we got to take a trip to the local movie theater where we could see either Dark Knight or Mamma Mia. Dark Knight got all the publicity, but imagine if we'd had a Barbenheimer situation back then!
I just love the fact that this movie and Devil Wears Prada came out within two years of each other, talk about two characters on the opposite end of the spectrum played by Meryl
Ok, that's the first I've ever heard about people saying this was a flop for Meryl, huh. I think she and the cast mates pretty much shine in it. And as far as I'm concerned, if they make a third instalment, it should be called "Mamma Mia... dot dot dot" 😂 - Loving yer enthusiasm during this watchalong!
This one was so fun to watch in the theater. It wasn't that full, but everyone there were Abba fans & groups of girl friends who sang along to every song, and had a blast.
To anyone who thinks this movie was a "flop" for Meryl Streep, "Mamma Mia!" grossed $144 million in North America and almost $695 million worldwide. In terms of box office, this is Meryl Streep's #1 film by a mile.
I understand that Pierce took the role when he heard Meryl was in it without seeing the script or knowing it was a musical. He just wanted to work with her that badly. So, he achieved his goal, very badly.
I would love to see your reaction to 2007's "Across The Universe". It's a jukebox musical like this one, but with Beatles songs. A love story between an British guy and an American girl, set in the late '60s / early '70s. With the Vietnam war in the background. Starring Jim Sturgess, Evan Rachel Wood & Joe Anderson. Directed by Julie Taymor. My favorite movie of all time.
Fun fact: it has been my dream for several years to have a Mamma Mia themed birthday party. Where we just turn on the movies and sing and dance along the whole time. Hopefully this year!
Whatttttt??? The Sam dad was my first choice. He like cares more about them and seems to be concerned fr. Wait guysssssss why are you cracking up😂😂😂 I thought Sam’s singing and role was great
I grew up with Pierce Brosnan as the charming Remington Steele. In the series there is an episode where is sang an Irish Lullaby. Swoon!!! My preteen heart!!! It wasn't until was a young adult that I was introduced to the BBC P&P. Colin "my original Mr Darcy
I feel like I also heard that most of the cast were drunk for all the filming. It might not be everyone’s favorite but I feel like actors had a blast filming!
I saw this in the theater when it first came out. What I remember most is the chorus of women giving a disappointed "Awww" when they saw Colin Firth dancing with his acquired partner in the water geyser dance scene.
Pierce's dad had just died when they offered him this role. He was interested cause he wanted to work with Meryl, and when he found out the character was called Carmichael - like his dad - Piece decided to take it inspite of it being a musical
I heard that Pierce wanted to do this movie so that he could be in movie with Meryl. His singing is not the best but he had fun doing it. Besides it was ABBA so what is not to like.
It’s not bad, but I I was disappointed having seen musical live on stage three times prior to the movie coming out. I literally laughed out loud at Pierce Brosnan singing SOS because he looked like he constipated baby. Also, I’m not sure why they didn’t do some songs that are in the musical, but then add a brand new song for Pierce Brosnan, the one actor who really can’t sing, instead.
Omg, loved the Eurovision movie. Please watch some real Eurovision sometime, it is even more insane mix of the bizarre and this year has some really interesting entrants!
OMG, really? I never heard the flop for Meryl thing. I do find this movie pretty fun but occasionally annoying, but the annoying part is not due to the cast AT ALL. I think it came down to watching it on the movie screen. It was very bright, very loud, a bit of a sensory overload at times (for me, I'm sure it was fine for most people) and it gave me a headache. I enjoyed it way more on my rewatch on the small screen. But I was very impressed by the cast from the get go - including the very amusing bad singers (hi, Brosnan 😉).
Re. Pierce, he just goes for it, and that's enough for me. I find "right, I can't sing, so - charge!" charming.
100% agree!

The only one I could have done without is Pierce Brosnan and it's not because he was bad at acting...it was the singing for me
OK, THAT'S THE FIRST I'VE EVER HEARD ABOUT

I love Remington Steele! I used to watch it on some weird local channel after school.
This is one of the first movies I ever saw Amanda Seifreid in. And as soon as she said "I'm TWENNY" i knew she was from PA, haha!
😂
This is Meryls highest grossing movie of her career! 610 million USD back in 2008!factoring inflation this movie would gross 800M today

Am I the only one who enjoys Pierce Brosnan's singing?😭
this movie is everything to me! I watched it at the theatre 4 times!!! ❤
Meryl sings live in every singing scene. It is not play back 😄
You guys are always reacting to my favorites❤
As someone who went to Porpoise Spit High (TRHS) Abba have a strange place in my life....
now you HAVE to do the sequel
Colin Firth is also very funny in the St Trinian movies. Not to spoil, but David Tennant is in the 2nd one 😉
Awesome reaction of my favorite movie!!!!!😊😊😊😊😊😊
Love this. You need to check out the French and Saunders skit on this. It’s hilarious
omg yes!! It's so brilliant
Yay! Jessa going to Greece! Visiting Mykonos perhaps?
for the musical theater girlies
Also -The Commitments! Plus Across the Universe 🎉❤

Can we also get a begin again reaction its a wildly underrated musical starring Kiera Knightley, Mark Ruffalo and Hailee Steinfeld
Did you watch the scene after the credits where they sing “Waterloo “?! Hilarious 😂🎉
The movie came out in 2008.
Seeing this again after Andor… Skarsgard has the RANGE 👏🏻
Not to mention Chernobyl!
Omg, loved the Eurovision movie. Please watch some real Eurovision sometime, it is even more insane mix of the bizarre and this year has some really interesting entrants!
I enjoy the sequel, too.
The copyrights cool if you sing over the audio
