It was good to see Big Sally come out to play, she gets the job done. You both have achieved so much, it's looking so good. Suggestion, put a tarp over head, so you have a bit of shade as you work. Your well is so good. Charcoal is a good cleaner, I have used it in my water butt. Chicken wire, straw and charcoal made into a circular blanket lowered into the well. Though there are other methods ....this is the natural one I can think of. The shelf near the window, cool area for keeping Milk in or storing oil lamps. It would make an unusual fish tank or vivarium. Have a good day ,enjoy your beers, stay safe.
I follow other RUclipsrs who are returning derelict stone buildings back to beautiful homes. They have restored a stone barn in Portugal and Theo has done a fabulous job of rendering and rebuilding their stone walls. I think he and others who use the lime mortar say it lets the stone walls breathe.

Hi Alex, great job you are your father are doing. I think the cement is a good choice. Definitely better than the mud / clay originally used. It sure makes a lot of dust when you brush it away.
About that hole on the wall, one of the things it could be, as you are in the interior of Portugal, is a prayer altar from a crypto-Jewish family. It is very comum in that area from Castelo Branco up in the direction of Bragança. During the Inquisition the jews fled to the interior of a Portugal and kept their religion as a secret. The most certain thing was that this hole was hidden behind a piece of furniture. You have a lot of information online about it, and also in the city of Belmonte you have a museum dedicated to it. I have pictures of a house in the town of Almeida with the same hole :)
@@AlexLukachina I really did enjoy. And your Father is amazing, please tell him . ❤️ It's wonderful to see father and son working together, making memories 💙 Looking forward to watching all the future progress.
Hi Alex, just found your channel and I am enjoying it. For the well, google that. I'm sure somehow the algae does preserve the cleanliness of the water. I maybe totally wrong though haha
Hi Alex, the contraption you were using to mix your cement is called a cement mixer. In between the walls where you poured the concrete I would have packed it with stones.
@@AlexLukachina Hi Alex, I'm talking about the middle where between the outer wall and the inner wall meet, I would only have packed it all with stones.
Hello, the green floating atop the well water looks like a very small plants either called Azolla or else (most likely) duckweed. Note that the well water is beautifully clear, the duckweed will exclude sunlight, take out water nutrients, and thus stop the water spoiling with algae. If it is duckweed, some species are actually edible and nutritious!
The green on top of the water indicates that it is clean water and not polluted. It's the result of sunlight on the water, you need to cover it to stop the algae from growing. It may or may not be fit for human consumption (you will need to have it tested) but will be fine for watering a garden.
Going to be to cool you should go check out Theo and Bea they just converted a barn and raised the roof for a bedroom looks like same stonework just found your channel keep up good work
Good work Alex. 👏 I heard that the green in the well is a good sign that the water is good. I would have a sample checked before using the water for human consumption. I do not know what the window like space was originally used for, is it somewhere to keep something cool ? It might make a good bookshelf ? When is Angela's appointment at the hairdressers ? Will you include her 🐑 appointment on the channel ?
I think that putting a lid on the well (wooden or concrete) will prevent the algae from growing and also prevent dirt/leaves/animals from getting in. The algae photosynthesises, so no sun = no algae.
Alex, will you later put some sort of insulation on the outside walls. I love to watch you videos and a remarkable young man. I’m by the way 80 years Of age. Greetings from Germany 🇩🇪
If the space was used for a barn,, straw on the floor, grain, dry debris of farms,, to milk the cow in the early morning,, before sunrise,, you must have a lantern, a light. It must be in a very safe place where it cannot be knocked over. It is low, perfect for milking and many farm jobs, protected where it cannot be knocked over, and all stone that does not burn,, and the small bit of soot in the top back gives this a good explanation.
Hi Michael, Thank you for the feedback, I appreciate it alot! And thank you for the concern for the ewe :) But As I wrote in the pinned comment, she has been already sheared :) And she is now ready for the summer :)
Hi Alex! Why did you put the wheelbarrow always across the concrete mixer? It should work better if you move the front of the wheelbarrow under the opening, so it isn‘t necessary to tilt it.
You have made a mistake using cement and concrete. Apart from the colour not matching, the stones will not be able to breath and expel water and you will end up with damp problems. It is better to use the original material of lime mortar and limecrete.
The probability of mold patches starting to grow and moisture getting trapped, increase if you do not use lime base mortar (non hydraulic preferably), especially near windows, . Learned the hard way and had to redo a full wall on my ruin restoration...
@@fabioqueiros8266 Every renovation I have watched where they are either building a stone wall, or filling in mortar use lime. I've not seen one of them not use lime. I hope you don't have a mildew problem in the future, but if you do, you will done your project twice. Check out Bee and Theo's stone cottage renovation - The Indie Project. He did an entire stone barn.
Hello Alex, dad and of course Angela. The niche in the wall I would think depended which room it was in. In the kitchen could well be a cold storage shelf for cheese, butter ect. If not for cold storage then maybe to keep the bottles of oil handy for cooking. If not in kitchen may have been for candles or lamps to i preventing drafts being knocked over. The green stuff is algae nature's protector. Means it is good water, but you would need it filtering before you could drink it I look forward to hearing your phrase "let's go". Wouldn't be you if you did not say that. When it is time for Angela to be sheared again, will you be doing that yourself. I
Hi Alex... don't get rid of the green stuff floating in the water ... if it grows, it's an indication that the water quality is top notch... almost drinkable... and the second important thing, that green stuff floating prevent nasty algae to grow, by blocking sun light to get to the water... please investigate to confirm what i'm saying... i always heard these two things about the little green plants floating in water in wells ;)
Love watching the videos 😊. Does your dad have a background in masonry or construction? Keep up the good work, binge watching your channel now to see how it turns out! Subscribed!
Just found your channel. Love the work you and your pops are doing! I do believe the square hole (niche) in the wall would have been an alter? Or cold storage? Seems too hot for that there though.
You need to get some pointing tools for the mortor between the stones and as it dries brush the joint with a soft brush. Is the alcove in the wall been some kind of cool box for food?, love the videos keep them coming.
Alex, by now you have learned from the locals in Portugal that the green algae is beneficial to keep the well water clean. It is a byproduct of the sun. Do not clean it out. Give some to your worms, it's clean greens for them. They will like it as much as coffee grounds. Portugal homes render with the lime mix. Not cement. It crumbles and you will need to start over. Do some research on the internet and ask at the hardware store what to buy. Your cement mixer will work perfectly for the sand and lime mixture. Good luck with all your projects. wear ear protection too. And a good mask. You won't be sorry.

@@AlexLukachina They were the first thing I noticed about the house and they made me smile because you match them. I am very happy to know you are connected to them and you will be a wonderful guardian of them.

Thank you very much for the feedback and appreciation!!
Hi Alex!
This is my firt comment here, pero I love all the videos you have already posted. I admire your determination to renovate the house. And even if I do not know absolutly nothing about, I think you're doing a very great job! Congratulations! And keep going!
Hi Virtudes,
Many thanks for your feedback, I appreciate the kind words.
And I am really glad you enjoy the videos!
Beton Machine in English is 'Cement Mixer' some might call it Concrete Mixer too..BUT Cement Mixer is the usual name 👍👍👍
Hi Keith,
Haha yeah this thing has so many names :D
But I love Cement Mixer, sounds nice.
Hi Alex, great job you are your father are doing. I think the cement is a good choice. Definitely better than the mud / clay originally used. It sure makes a lot of dust when you brush it away.
Hi Mamie,
Thank you for your feedback and support, It means the world to me!!
Keep being an awesome human being :)
Hi Paulo,
Thank you for the explanation!
Wow I didn't know that, That is wonderful!!
What A piece of history indeed.
I love everything about this channel ❤️ watching you make something beautiful out of ruins gives me hope for all of us.
Everyday im waiting for new episode :) Good work Alex :)

@@AlexLukachina I really did enjoy. And your Father is amazing, please tell him . ❤️ It's wonderful to see father and son working together, making memories 💙
Looking forward to watching all the future progress.
It’s amazing how you can see the skill and care that when into the original building. It’s lovely to see you take so much care over the renovation.
Hi Alex, just found your channel and I am enjoying it. For the well, google that. I'm sure somehow the algae does preserve the cleanliness of the water. I maybe totally wrong though haha
Hi David,
Haha :)
Thank you for your feedback and support, I appreciate it very much!!
Hi Alex, the contraption you were using to mix your cement is called a cement mixer. In between the walls where you poured the concrete I would have packed it with stones.
Hi Aden,
Thank you for the information!
We did pack it with stones ))
I think I even said it in the video.
@@AlexLukachina Hi Alex, I'm talking about the middle where between the outer wall and the inner wall meet, I would only have packed it all with stones.
@@adenvet2830 Yep I am talking about the same, It is packed with stones.
Great video thanks
The green on top of the water indicates that it is clean water and not polluted. It's the result of sunlight on the water, you need to cover it to stop the algae from growing. It may or may not be fit for human consumption (you will need to have it tested) but will be fine for watering a garden.
it was used to light candles and light the house
Going to be to cool you should go check out Theo and Bea they just converted a barn and raised the roof for a bedroom looks like same stonework just found your channel keep up good work
Thank you LuJean :)
Hi thefatbaker,
Thank you for the plattera of useful information you shared ))
And Angel has been to the hair salon already :)
if you cover the well no light for algae or debris can get in there resulting in a cleaner well
Hi Alex,
Regarding the health of your well. I think it’s very healthy as it is, but I think asking your neighbours would give you the best information
Let’s do lunch again. Food at local cafe looked great!
Hi c g Annis,
Okay okay, I will film when I go next time ))
I think that putting a lid on the well (wooden or concrete) will prevent the algae from growing and also prevent dirt/leaves/animals from getting in. The algae photosynthesises, so no sun = no algae.
Alex it was used for food storage , much colder in the wall !! my gran had the same thing !!
Alex, will you later put some sort of insulation on the outside walls. I love to watch you videos and a remarkable young man. I’m by the way 80 years
Of age. Greetings from Germany 🇩🇪
your Dad is a good Builder
Hi James,
Yes he is.
Hi Alex that's an African Hoopoe bird I believe it eats bugs.
Hi Amelia,
Hoopoe, I will remember that now :)
I have so many of them on the property, they are beautiful.
Genius ladder moves! 🌀💚🌀
Haha, they are incredible aren't they :D
I think the little square cove was used to store firewood for the oven, maybe?
Haha, thats a possibility :)
Its looking good Alex and dad !!!
Hi Sergio,
Thank you for the feedback!!
Maybe a shelf to store things on your papa is a good worker
Btw great job an the wall
Thank you ))
If the space was used for a barn,, straw on the floor, grain, dry debris of farms,, to milk the cow in the early morning,, before sunrise,, you must have a lantern, a light. It must be in a very safe place where it cannot be knocked over. It is low, perfect for milking and many farm jobs, protected where it cannot be knocked over, and all stone that does not burn,, and the small bit of soot in the top back gives this a good explanation.
Thank you for the vid...great content .....time to shear the ewe.👨🌾🚜👨🌾, farmer from ohio usa
Hi Michael,
Thank you for the feedback, I appreciate it alot!
And thank you for the concern for the ewe :)
But As I wrote in the pinned comment, she has been already sheared :)
And she is now ready for the summer :)
Hi Alex!
Why did you put the wheelbarrow always across the concrete mixer? It should work better if you move the front of the wheelbarrow under the opening, so it isn‘t necessary to tilt it.
What a handy ladder
You have made a mistake using cement and concrete. Apart from the colour not matching, the stones will not be able to breath and expel water and you will end up with damp problems. It is better to use the original material of lime mortar and limecrete.
it's a very controversial subject and might be an idea to see what Nic says here: ruclips.net/video/RhvpWi2oUcU/видео.html
Hi Pau,
I appreciate your opinion, But I don't think I did a mistake.

So its a good thing, meaning on my channel you will see something unique that you haven’t watched before ))
If you want to stop algae bloom from the top part of the well then it's likely good advice to keep sunlight away.
In other vlogs the "shelf" was a place to put a pan to clean dishes.
I think it is to put a candle in or any other ligth!!! but not sure
You beat me to it!😀👍✌️👋🇬🇧
Looks really Great, your sheep loves you like a dog, you should get her a friend. I'm wondering if your neiche was for storing bread or spices..? 👍👍💚🍻
Hi Robinson,

Thanks for your vid 😇💟💟💟 Love you guys.
Hi Arjan,
Thank you for the feedback!!
concrete mixer looks great
Hello Alex, dad and of course Angela. Means it is good water, but you would need it filtering before you could drink it
I look forward to hearing your phrase "let's go".
PS - it only grows on high quality water ;)
Hi Unhuz,
Ohh I didn't know that,
Thank you very much for your explanation and lesson, I appreciate you very much!!

Hi Alex New subscriber from India nice videos keep it up 😊
Love watching the videos 😊.
Hi Tyghe,
Thank you for the support!
Haha maybe, maybe ))
You need to get some pointing tools for the mortor between the stones and as it dries brush the joint with a soft brush. Is the alcove in the wall been some kind of cool box for food?, love the videos keep them coming.
For the well perhaps some sort if irrigation or water pump to stop the water staying stagnant 🤔
