Today at Badgerworks we build the crash site diorama for our wrecked Airfix Spitfire, with water effects, a nice, grassy bank with flowers, and a river bed made of cat litter...
After catastrophic engine trouble, our intrepid pilot is forced to crash land his Spitfire, sliding it through a river, hitting a boulder and ending up in the bank. After unsuccessfully trying to fix the radio to call for help, our man hitches up his britches and sets off to the inevitable derision of his mates.
We're calling this one "A Long Walk Home".

I love a good diorama. It isn't just the illustration of an historical event in 3-dimensions, but the artistry and craftsmanship involved in making one.
Indeed. I'm getting more into diorama making - I think it really adds a lot rather than just having a model on its own.
I had to pause the video to stop laughing once your cat litter gravel experiment dried. Good fun, beautiful diorama
Skraith penis 😂
Lol
glad im the only one who thought it looked like a big knob lol
I know right 😄
Weirdoooooooo
Get a wee pilot walking off in distance to end of your wee path with a helmet on the wing haha
A few other people have said that and I think it's a fair point. I've been trying to include more figures in my dioramas because they do indeed make it come to life more.
Nice work
Bumped into this just now and love it. Not made models for 40 years and this gives me a lot of happy memories.
Good old pound shop! Improvisation to the max.
Thanks for watching :-)
Great scenery. I hope the pilot is OK..:=) A detail about the machine guns though : this type of aircraft carried 0.303 guns. The ones you put in are Browning M2's in .50 caliber.
The Spitfire carried .303 Browning MGs. These guns are sold by Eduard as both .50 and .30 cal.
Thanks for watching :-)
Love videos where guys get creative with anything and everything to hand... I've seen some genius hacks over the last few years
Thanks. I'm glad you enjoyed it 🙂
As someone who doesn't typically sit through lengthy videos, I can't believe I watched the whole thing from beginning to end. Very well done. Good presentation, editing & entertainingly engaging.
Thanks, I appreciate it. I'm always a little concerned at the length of the videos, but I've been told people like the longer viewing time.
Most lengthy video just drone on and on. Having myself been an editor in the Television industry, I typically fast-forward to just the highlights & relevant/interesting parts in most videos. You were able to achieve that directly with your concise editing that kept the video moving along very nicely & quickly from one part to the next, with just enough detail to learn from but not letting the presentation slow down. Again well done.
That's good to hear, thanks. One of the problems I found when I first got back into modelling was trying to find information on how people did things. I've watched many videos of very highly skilled builders, but they don't always show how they get the amazing results they do. That was the reason I started this channel - so I could share the information I found to others in the same boat as me. It does mean that sometimes the videos need to be a bit longer than what is normal for this kind of channel, but I don't want to miss anything out.
I must confess I'm in the business too, but normally in front of the camera rather than behind it, so editing is still a bit of a learning curve for me. It's gratifying to hear from someone who knows what they're doing that I'm heading the right way :-)
The gravel for the experiment was a lovely shape
Couple resin tips, our shop also has no heater so we made a resin box from some thick foam insulation and stuck a 25 watt bulb in top that keeps it a good constant temp.
There's also tape called flashbreaker that's a bit pricey, but resin doesn't doesn't stick to it at all.
As a potential third, if you do resin pours in this size square grid frequently it would be good to make a "box" of 4 pieces you can put together with screws to get crisp square edges. Some packing tape on the inside will make it non stick too.
Good tips, thanks :-)
Creative talent... well done!!!!
Thanks :-)
"that I blitzed in a blender" my favourite quote ever
Thanks :-)
I must say, that generic cat litter turned out to looked exactly like river rocks in my opinion. Great job overall. It is a BEAUTIFUL diorama.
Thanks, I appreciate it. The cat litter is really odd - it goes from a generic grey to a nice varied tone once the scenery glue goes on.
Seriously, one of the best how to make a diorama tutorial that I’ve seen. Thank you!
Thanks, I appreciate it :-)
I am a modeller, but primarily a Star Wars costumer, and use both the pastels and cheap cat litter as cheap weathering media, so brilliant to see both used here (linking the use of pastels for weathering in you previous video showing the build and painting/weathering of the model).... brilliant as ever sir...
I used both pastels and the cat litter to weather my son's Fallout Vault suit we made for him - it's very versatile stuff :-)
Thanks for watching.
@@SteamGeezerUK Exactly - highly versatile media that scale really well - models kits, model railways and also 1:1 cosplay/costumes, and much cheaper than commercial versions, but just as effective, and allow for custom mixing - fab. Keep up the feeds and videos as fantastic inspiration... :-)
Simply Amazing! You've got me thinking about my own dioramas now :P
Model Minutes same
Great job, mate.
Thanks :-)
Absolutly amazing 😱😱👍👍
Thanks :-)
Brilliantly done, A Long Walk Home, with Bill to follow 😂
Nice one m8. I've added a damaged Fokkker to my WWI layout. I have four aircraft with working engines over head :)
Nice. I did a Hurricane with working lights and engine a while back for a charity auction - ruclips.net/video/uecs_hrhFhY/видео.html
that cat litters colour is perfect after you put the glue on, looks like real river rocks
Isn't it though? I was very pleased with how that came out. I would have been happy with just the plain grey, but the glue just made it come alive :-)
Just brilliant 👍
Thanks :-)
fullers all is all I use for rocks and gravel, I sit for ages picking out all of the bigger lumps of it for the larger rocks and sieve it for finer or sandy type roads.
It's good stuff isn't it? The bag I've got will last for ages too.
that is amazing very good work
Thanks :-)
Fantastic diorama , only the one gripe thow, when that Spitfires crash and hit water or ground, the prop shafts would have been bent backwards and not broken off, Mk1 props were made from Duralumin (later ones from composite wood and resin due to shortages) I know this to be so as I have an uncle that was an airframe fitter during WW2 and he said this was a common problem with novice flyers ground the Spits on landing due to the nose being so long, just a reality fact , sorry for being picky ,but there you go.
No need to apologise :-) A lot of folks have commented on this. All the info I could find said Spits had Rotol props, so that's what I went with.
Thanks for watching.
Great job. Very realistic.
Thanks, I appreciate it :-)
Well done. you have given me a few ideas now on how to do my diorama thanks
Always got to love the very clean wreck diorama's.
Thanks, I appreciate it.
Even the smallest thing... will be painted and placed carfuly. Even tho 0.4% of the people seeing this will see that
Very true. It's interesting that so many modellers will spend hours painting and fitting parts that will never be seen on the completed model but, as I have said often myself, "I know it's there" :-)
Thanks for watching.
Very good video, clearly explained and well photographed.
and also fantastic video editing. PS> Really nice modelling too.
@@adrianharris9091 I'm glad you enjoyed it, thanks for watching :-)
the attention to detail is a joy to watch. What a beautiful piece of work.
Thanks, I appreciate it :-)
Fantastic!!!!!
Thanks :-)
Wish I was that skilled
I appreciate the comment, but anyone can learn to do this. No-one is born knowing how to do anything - everything can be learned. That's one of the reasons I make these videos; to pass on what I learned from other people.
Have a go, keep on having a go and eventually you'll be able to make anything you want.
Thanks
super to see and super to watch well done
Thanks, I appreciate it :-)
Hammer geil👍👍👍👍
Danke :-)
A marvelous piece of art. Thanx for sharing. 👍👍
Thank you for watching :-)
This is an excellent model and looks very realistic. Great job!
Thanks, I appreciate it.
Well done for this excellent diorama which is a work of art!!!
Thanks, I appreciate it.
Wow very amazing looking bud that craftsmanship 10 out of 10
Thanks :-)
Rather a splendid effort I must say. The effects came out really good.
Wow amazing... Well Done!
Thanks, I appreciate it :-)
Incredible work. Just shows what someone with some skill can achieve along with a good imagination, where anything is possible.
Thanks, I appreciate it :-)
thanks bro, my first resin exposure...very interesting and convincing...
Thanks, I'm glad you enjoyed it.
Never stop please, your videos are amazing
Thanks, I appreciate it :-)
A very nice job and a bloody well done!
Thanks :-)
Really cool. The only thing I would say is it felt like the river bed would of had a gash in it where the plane had slid in the bank. Think that would of been a nice touch. But really good work! 👍🏻
I actually did that initially but I couldn't get it looking right so I ditched the idea.
Thanks for watching.
The amount of detail in your work is just extraordinary!
Thanks for watching :-)
Great piece, only thing i would have suggested would be that if the plane hit the rock on its wing, I feel it would have turned atleast somewhat form the impact not directly gone forward. Just an idea
Agree, the plan would of actually pulled to the right after the wing hitting the rock, so engine would of turned towards the the rock and wing towards the path..
Gorgeous diorama. All you need is river noise.
Thanks. That actually wouldn't be too hard to do. A simple soundboard, battery and charger with a speaker built into the box. If you watch my tank diorama build, that has sound. The video is linked below, the soundcard part starts at around the 37 minute mark...

Always enjoy watching your downloads I wish I was half as good
I loved it
Thanks :-)
Nice piece of work, excellent.
Thanks :-)
Amazing! Aand Thanks For Making Lots Of Stuff For Our Entertainment!
You're very welcome. Thanks for watching :-)
@@SteamGeezerUK Your Welcome! :-)
Interesting idea......looks amazing! Incidentally my favourite spitfire was found in a river in Yorkshire after having a mid air collision on a training sortie in 1940......She's now flying for Commanche fighters and cared for by The Fighter Collection at Duxford. X4650 is the spit in question
Nice. I don't get up to Duxford very often but I'll keep an eye out for it next time I'm there.
@@SteamGeezerUK keep an eye of out the mark one marked up KL-A
Great pair of videos, fàntastic job, i just keep on learning, thank god you don't charge for your time, can't wait for the next one.
That's why I make the videos - to pass on things I learned when I got back into modelling. Just happy to help out in my own small way.
Thanks for watching.
That does look convincing, a great display piece.
Wow this is amazing. So impressive to a modelling beginner even at 30yo! Therapeutic viewing too :)
Thanks :-)
You’re videos are what inspired me to make my own wreck scenes. Bravo!
Thanks, I appreciate it.
Other than the fuselage being out of place, a fairly nice diorama
That came out a real treat, some very interesting water affects there. A beautifully presented Spitfire on it's last day. Very Well Done.
Thanks, I appreciate it :-)
Nice build and vid process :)
Thanks, I appreciate it :-)
Excellent diarama . Full marks on this one 👍
Amazing craftsmanship, Look forward to seeing more.
Fantastic 👍👍👍👍👍
Incredibly good. I do think the leading edge of the wing would have crumpled when it hit the rock but at this stage that's probably just nit picking on my part.
Regards, David.

fantastic...well done.

i might try this on my model railway as i plan to have a river that snakes beneath the viaduct. i notice that having no water around the plane and just glued down cat litter looks good as damp gravel after the tide pulled out of the estuary
Thanks. I hope it works out for you. I try and avoid model railways as I understand it's like a gateway drug and you end up spending all your money on trains and track and stuff :-)
@@SteamGeezerUK well, im into that and thats fine. I respect your opinion as its sort if true
Only recently stumbled across your work....just brilliant, and very inspiring. Cheers very much :)
Awesome! Thank you!
Great piece of work that mate 👍
Thanks :-)
When he said in packed glue i said to my self i think the plane in packed more than the glue lol
I should not try to make jokes i give up
I have friends you'd get on with just fine :-)
SteamGeezer and Son Independent Traders lol
Outstanding job on the diorama. Learned something new with the use of the foil for the wing. Beautiful diorama.
I'm surprised that there are no Airfix jokes in the comments. For example, one of them could of been... this diorama is Airfix in a nutshell. Just saying anyways good diorama. Keep up the good work please!
This was my first model. The airfix that is
7:48 that’s the perfect glue placement
Would ‘ve preferred to see a crashed BF109 with a Spit in the air! lol!
Superb display, good informative commentary-and you made it look easy! !
Great piece, , , . So glad I found you .
Thanks, I appreciate it.
Yeah!
Quite fantastic - I'm not mch of an aircraft builer myself, but this gave a tom of tips on how to do things, so I might give it a try.
The only think missing from the diorama is a human element - without people a scene like this doesn't connect with the viewer. I'm not saying filling the path with people, but perhaps someone with his dog having a chat with the unfortunate pilot? That would also give it a sense of time - the crash happened quite recently.
Or, if you want to make it have happened some time ago - some engineers trying to figure out to get the garbage out of the water. Anything is possible, but as I said, a human element is quite necessary I think.
I did think about adding people, a pilot at least, but I couldn't find any decent 1/72 scale figures at a price and delivery schedule to add them. Plus my figure painting leaves a lot to be desired :-)
It's something I plan to do with future dioramas, if it's appropriate, because you're absolutely right in saying a human element adds a lot to the finished result.
Thanks for watching.
Amazing diorama. Very convincing, and detailed. Those green streaks over the left wing, I am not too sure though, at first impression to me it looked like some slimy stuff. "A Long Walk Home" is a nice title btw, good sense of humor.
It's meant to be river weed, dragged up by the wing as it went through the water. There's actually a lot more of it in the river, but it's not as visible as I'd hoped it would be :-)
Thanks for watching.
I love all the details and the paint jobs man!! Good Job!
Thanks :-)
Wow just wow
I.am.speechless!
Thanks :-)
Oh, I miss those old Citadel hex pots. Fantastic paints, the whole range.
I've had those for years. I've even got the older round pots too :-)
You're a magician!
I got a big bottle of PVA and Acetone with craft knifes n small tubs cat litter n sand paper for my Iraq diarama since you said that scenic glue has the same alcohol as the acetone I'm gonna mix it with the pva and see if turn out as well and thin as that kinda glue, if used it before so be able to tell if works what can go wrong haha, great build
Brilliant. I really enjoyed watching both videos of how this came together! 👍
Thanks :-)
Thought id never see a mans chap shaped made from fuller's earth on your test piece lol and awesome video you have given me loads of ideas for my next build and the pound shop has some good hobbie items
That was genuinely unintentional... 😂
Still, I'm glad you enjoyed the video and got some tips out of it, thanks for watching 🙂
