The Star Wars that folks enjoyed is largely in the past. The silver lining for those that care, is that most of the books can be had relatively cheap.

A big thing about Star Wars comics that should always give pause to investments is that the comic book is not the original medium of Star Wars. When I buy a super hero I’m not just buying their first appearance in comics, I’m buying their first appearance in anything. Most Star Wars fans aren’t comic fans. Is the comic the definitive purchase medium for these characters or is it their action figures which have a much stronger connection to the franchise?

Shouldn’t compare pandemic prices to any current prices. Everything is down to where is should be. And I wouldn’t crap on something I haven’t watched. Also a majority of newer collectors aren’t readers they are speculators.

well, price drop also is in line with the financial markets. best to look at is small caps index. it would overlap with the price of comics if you havent notice as it is reflective of the extra income of the country. small caps hasnt recovered and the only reason the indexes look good is AI being pumped. small caps it representative of the overall market and rates being high by the fed pretty much caused everyone's liquidity to dry up. let's not even get to inflation. LOL!. so yea. 2021 was peak of markets., then fed started pumping rates whcih caused everyone to lose money/buying power which like i said, in line with comic book prices. We;'ll see a recovery once fed starts cutting interest rates(also indicative of inflation issue resolved or under control). Once that is done. people will start to have more money again and they can buy what they like. Currently everyone is buckling down and even those in upper middle income have resorted to shopping at cheaper locations. Data shows all this anyway. nothing i say is new.

The boom and bust is just part of the cycle. Star Wars books remind me of Valiants of the 1990s. Piles being sold and then when brought back to a dealer one is offered like 1/10 of what the comic booked for, which lead to piles of people leaving the hobby. Kids used to read books but now, they buy a book and come to the cash register and go "How much is it worth".. Meanwhile the book just came out that day. A book rises from $1 to $20 on paper and when the buyer wants to sell and is offered $2 to $3 at a store, they then leave the hobby. Or even better, they buy the book for $20 and then are offered $3 for it. So buyer gets hit on either end. Seen it so many times. And then we wonder why people leave the comic market and it takes 6 to 8 years to recover.

Swag!! I'm gonna keep you on your toes here: BIG key you didn't bring up.... Star Wars fans are NOT comic book collectors, period. Period, Period, Period. Go to the end of this video, and rehash the statement you made: The comic book boom is dead. I agree 100%. And that is why SW books are at "zero," NOT because no one cares about the comics. The driving force behind Star Wars Keys during the boom were speculators working as day traders trying cash in on comics during covid, and then the fools that followed blindly, making purchasing decisions with their FOMO out of control. This has nothing to do with Star Wars fans, but everything to do with comic collectors FOMOing out and Speculators FOMOing out in the frenzy of a reality that was covid.
Now, talking about the state of Star Wars fans is a whole other discussion. I disagree with you 100% when you said this wasn't review bombed. Review bombing is the new fad that everyone keeps in their pockets like Pop Rocks in the 80s. When countless reviews poured in weeks before the first release of the show, it's not that hard to validate this as review bombing. While many ARE disappointed in the show, review bombind most likely is always going to be a factor these days.
But this is the biggest truth we should acknowledge about Star Wars fans and the state of the franchise:
Disney didn't kill Star Wars. George Lucas did. Well, actually the fans did, but here's what I mean: The SAME fans complaining about Disney Star Wars are the same fans that DROVE George Lucas to sell his baby to Disney. How? Because they crucified him for the prequals. If the fans weren't entitled crybabies then, we wouldn't be where we are today. They bullied George to such humiliation that he sold the franchise to a company that clearly doesn't care about George's vision.
Lastly, I'm a HUGE Star Wars fan, and been one ever since I was a toddler. I loved the original trilogy, I loved the prequals (Revenge of the Sith is probably my second favorite Star Wars movie). I loved Force Awakens, and honestly, Rogue One, Mando, and Obi Wan are quite honestly some of the best Star Wars entertainment that I would put right up there with how I loved the originals. Disney brought us the Clone Wars and Rebels which were LOVED by the fandome, but existed before trolls had access to social media the way they do today. Yes, I hate Rian Johnson and what he did to the Last Jedi which then made the third sequal fall flat, but that's where the hate begins and ends with me. I will say also, that it's sad that Disney has not used George as a consultant to help guide the stories and characters while they expand the world, but again, George sold. They don't have to. It is what it is.
At the end of the day, 5 million people tuned in to the Acolyte on it's release day. To sit and say nobody cares about Star Wars anymore is not only a bit of a foolish thing to say, but it's just not true. The problem, and I know you know this, is that hate is loud, and it will always be loud as long as we have social media to echo chamber the hate. There are still people out there that can enjoy fun entertainment without picking it a part just to have something to complain about. Love you man!

But if it makes you feel big to think that your opinion is one that is golden above the rest, go ahead my guy. Let that drive your purpose. BTW, you're right, I stupidly missed Andor, which is right up there with some of the best Star Wars ever...
Oh, also, I never said anyone "FORCED" George to sell. I'm simply stating WHY he sold. He's even spoken on this. I didn't just make it up lol.

You're pretty much right, Chris. George pulled the chute because all he got from 1997-2012 was grief from shitheads who thought they knew better.
And as you alluded to - the venn diagram of Star Wars fans and comic collectors is a slim overlap. If Star Wars fans collect anything it's toys. And before anybody tells me that toy collecting is dead, too, let me just say that it has followed the same downturn as all other collectibles. The economy is tough, and at the same time Hasbro has jacked their prices to unreasonably high levels. THAT is killing collecting more than anything else.
Here's some facts for the reactionaries that just want to complain. The more attempts Lucasfilm takes with on-screen content, the more misses there will be. That's the way it goes. Don't believe me? Who's the winningest pitcher in baseball history? Answer: the same guy that has the most losses in baseball history. In fact, if you look at the list of all-time winners, you won't have to look long to find that same name on the all time losers list. That doesn't mean they're overrated. It means they had a LONG career (as Star Wars has had), and that winning is HARD. Producing something that is universally loved is HARD. If you take off the nostalgia blinders, check expectations, and tune out the rage bait for 5 minutes, you'll figure out that asking Star Wars, or any franchise, to excel in line with expectations is utterly impossible.

Star Wars comics have always been trash. They were a joke for 30 + years for a reason..they sucked. I'd much rather own a vintage Star Wars 70s Japanese popy or takara Toy or 70-80s Kenner in the box Tie-fighter etc...over any Star Wars comic... Why? Cause those are timeless..and Star Wars comics are a joke. #fact.

Not for nothing Swag, but there really aren't any books that are that connected to The Acolyte. The High Republic comics that exist are all set over 100 years prior to this show, and as far as we know just one character has carried over to the show - and she's a very minor character in the show so far. This is a lot of ado about nothing.
The audience reviews are full of shit (seriously - check out what's happened to audience scores for Indie movies called "The Acolyte" "The Acolytes" - they're being slammed with negative Star Wars reviews even though they aren't Star Wars movies). Sure, there are some that dislike it. But most of those people decided to hate it when it was announced, and make hating stuff their personality.
Star Wars isn't dead - measuring a franchise's "liveliness" by how much it drives comic spec is silly at best.
And if we're being honest - haven't SW keys just ridden the same downturn as books from Marvel, DC, and others? UF4 was selling for $3,000 just 3-4 years ago. Now it's barely $1,000. But Miles is alive and well....to suggest otherwise is disingenuous at best.

I was looking at getting Heir to the Empire 1, would love to get the 1st appearance of Ashoka, and I was even looking at Kanan 6. There is no way in hell, I'll touch any book except for Star Wars 1 first print. And then the only reason would be for nostalgia only. I think the Star Wars brand is damaged badly. We will see when the Mandalorian movie comes out. I think it'll be poorly received no matter how good the film.

I sell exclusively Star Wars comics on ebay and they sell like candy, all the time. I find this video skewed since supply of books, specifically dark horse keys, is way lower than the overproduced books of all the usual suspects, NM 87 & 98, ASM 300 & 361, so it's very hard for SW books to hit hot lists. Yes, Star Wars is just a drop in the bucket in comparison to Spider-man, X-Men, Hulk, etc. in the comic universe. There is a niche collector that always buys it and I've never had selling it since the 90s up to and including now.

People seem to state “…ever since Disney took over” or “Disney ruined Star Wars” which may (or may not) be true, but if Disney had not purchased it from George there would be no Star Wars. George was done, he wasn’t making anymore SW content. So if somebody didn’t purchase it there would be no more content. I get it some feel that would have been better and if that’s the case just pay no attention to any of the new stuff. I personally want as much Star Wars content as I can get. Andor is an amazingly well done show, I really enjoy Mandalorian, the Ashoka show had more upside than down. I will give Acolyte a chance (I haven’t loved it and at times cringed) but I will see where it goes. I have ALWAYS viewed Star Wars like pizza: even when pizza is not the best it’s still great because it’s pizza. There is no denying that Star Wars is one of (if not the most ) Pop Culturely relevant things ever. Ask a 100yo person who Darth Vader is and they will know. Ask a little kid…. STAR WARS MUST LIVE ON AND WILL regardless of comic sales.

You can offset what you lost on this book by buying a couple more for cheap and then reselling them? Unfortunately, I think these books are going to continue to tank for the next 5 years until Disney makes major changes in their leadership. The sad thing is that Disney has the ability to make good Star Wars, they just choose not to. Andor, Rogue One, Rebels, Bad Batch, and the Mandalorian Season 1-2 prove this. Kathleen Kennedy needs to be fired.

The one thing you missed on is that Star Wars fandom and its success as a franchise has nothing to do with comics. Never has. The Star Wars comic boom was created mostly by non Star Wars fans and speculation. Star Wars fans don’t find the comic books as the first medium to have and collect to show their love of the franchise. Comics are a minuscule part of the franchise. Toys by Hasbro, collectibles by Hot Toys and Sideshow are still booming. LEGO is on fire and there are many more that Star Wars fans would desire more than comics. It’s just a fact. Yes, not all Star Wars shows hits with everyone. Yes everyone’s opinion is subjective. And that’s ok. Folks that hated the prequels were OT diehards but the prequels gained a new fandom. The Prequel and OT diehards hate the sequels. The cycle will continue. These young fans that are diehards of the sequels will most likely hate on future Star Wars films. But those will gain new fans. And then there is a good chunk of folks that enjoy it all. Star Wars is far from dead. They just have a divisive fan base that have their favorites. And that’s ok too.

I don't mind the different interpretations of the SW Universe and the new stuff doesn't change the old. It's just a show peoples! Relax! ... Looking forward though to finally being able to afford some key books due to the hate and lack of interest... fine by me! Thanks haters and those who fell off! 😄

I think you're pretty out of tune with actual Star Wars fans who collect comics. They aren't the ones driving up secondary market prices in the first place. Speculators are. So I guess speculators don't care anymore, sure. The hardcore Star Wars fans that actually buy books buy them new at cost. Not at spec prices.

Book of Boba Fett just wasnt up to par. Part of it seems to be that once you pull a helmet off of someone, they just lose all mystery and become totally human. Kinda like with Spidermans Mysterio. Wasnt the whole I idea of Mysterio having the mystery of whats behind the helmet? HENCE the word MYSTERIO. But Instead they unmask Mysterio in the first 5 minutes cause they had to have main actors face showing. Lol, took the mystery right out of Mysterio for the rest of the movie and made it half of what the movie could have been. Same with Mandelorian, demasked. And Once Boba Fett was shown in the movie and then in the TV series, just no more mystery. He even was an older Fett too. Add that to a just so and so story, and you have Nothing! Then add in any woke in which Star Wars seems to love to indulge in, and your in even a deeper minus category.

My brother had a great observation that I agree with - if you told me in the 80s that the Karate Kid would have a significantly better track record for IP 40 years in the future than Star Wars, I would have thought you were insane - but you would have been correct.

When the Valiants like Turok, XO, Magnus, etc took a dive, they were laughing at me buying them up at shows in lots for $2 to $5 each for any of the keys. It took like 8 years but all the Valiant keys are now worth 6 to 30 times what was paid after the bust. I think the same will be found of Star Wars. When they hit bottom buy them! May take 10 years but those keys will be worth again eventually!

As a sci-fi Film/TV franchise is there another one that can even sell comics? What are the sales on Star Trek? Dune? Battlestar Galactica? That said, I think the truth lies in that Disney MASSIVELY MISCALCULATED when they swept away years and years of Original Expanded Universe Stories. They were great source material written by great authors- and itt broke the hearts of a generation of readers and fans- especially when the new Disney stuff stunk compared to what we had read. That EU is OUR Star Wars. Until the Mouse House clears the board again and goes to those books... Forget it. The EU books set such a high bar Disney does not have the talent to compete with it beyond a lucky strike such as Rogue One- and so the older fans remain apathetic. Disney would strike gold with an Animated Expanded Universe featuring the Original Characters just like X-Men 97. Someone get on the phone and make that happen!

Yep…dump all your Star Wars comics so I can buy them for a dollar or less. In 20 years it will be rebooted when Disney sells the corpse and those 9.8 will rebound. If Boba Fett or Darth Revan or so many other Darths are done properly with the lore being respected this stuff can be a cash cow! Cal Kestis and Starkiller and other Jedi could be huge too! Disney is just being run by weirdos and they will be gone soon. Tubi overtook Disney today for top 5 viewership and Gina Carano’s case is going to discovery. Acolyte reviews are down to 16% audience score. Disney parks are empty except the Japanese park who kept the song of south ride because they have their own management not answering to Disney. Disney has lost too many people who used to give them money, and no new people care. We can all only hope that apathy continues for Disney. Please don’t buy new Disney Star Wars comics or even all the woke marvel garbage. If Disney has to sell these IP’s to prevent bankruptcy….then all of our beloved canon and old comics will go back up in price! Pre-Disney Star Wars is amazing. Disney Star Wars is garbage

Remember the rant from Glenn O'Leary from The Comic Book Palace about the current state of comics? The Acolyte is exactly what he was yelling about and he was spot on.
On another note, can you really look at the peak sales of books that all seem to land during covid? It was an artificially manufactured boom and the stats from that timespan shouldn't be taken in account. The peak's of books prior to that boom are a far better representation of reality.

Star Wars comics were awesome with dark horse-kotor, legacy, republic, blood ties, those maul minis, dawn of the Jedi, knight errant, clone wars, etc. Star Wars collectors are rabid and loyal. I am one! I have dumped thousands of dc and marvel comics yet kept the Star Wars Dark Horse and early marvel runs. Why? I have a nostalgic attachment to the original movies and the expanded universe and they keep me focused on why I actually love Star Wars-the stories! For me, I always look at Disney’s Star Wars creations as bland, boring versions that will never excite me like the older versions. I don’t have to like the new to appreciate/care for the old. Current crap is not going to change my childhood love for the originals. The early Star Wars comics will always be in demand. Those old dark horse will always be in demand as well because they didn’t print millions of copies like marvel does for all of their current titles. Also, it’s interesting to see Disney and marvel going back and using expanded universe characters to try to drum up excitement for their new offerings-Mara jade, Ashoka, Thrawn, etc. I wouldn’t count the older Star Wars comics as dead. These books will always be a better alternative to marvels high republic and doctor aphra.

The crappy content we have been getting from Marvel, DC and at a maximum Star Wars is another reason why comic prices are in the toilet. Once it became about pushing politics and a social narrative over telling a compelling story it was game, set, match.
I have a good friend who shutdown his online comic store and WhatNot channel due to poor sales. He was losing money on his inventory so after a year or so of bleeding out he decided to cut bait and close up shop. I too saw a major drop in the valuation of not only my own personal collection but the books I have listed for sale on my store just sit there for weeks and weeks. I have to keep dropping the price each week if I really want to sell the book otherwise it just sits there. Running auctions on EBay is not really an option since you risk losing a solid 9.8 for $30 bucks. Lowball offers are the norm now. Some of that is due to the poor economy and rampant inflation but the content being pure trash is a major, major culprit.
    Thank the powers that be!
