    I'm surprised we haven't had a crank powered washing machine before. It seems like a step in the development of the machine we would've done before.

      I actually remember my grandmother using a washing machine that was hand cranked. However, there are some main differences between her manual machine and the one in this video. My grandmother's was nowhere near as small, definitely not portable, cranking was not as effortless as shown in this video, and the basket with the clothes did not spin anywhere near as quick as this one Also, to dry the clothing, instead of spinning to remove the water, each article of clothing was threaded individually through two, nearly touching parallel rollers that squeezed out most of the water (like putting dough onto a manual pasta maker). Then, everything was hung on a linen lineto fully dry.

    • @cupguin
      @cupguin 2 года назад +2

      @@B_Bodziak my grandmother had one too, and a set of clothes wringers.
      A lot of modern solutions to contemporary issues come from traditional knowledge but figuring out how to utilize that knowledge in a practical fashion is the trick. Like clothes wringers were pretty dangerous, figuring out how to make a hand crank washer also a safe way to dry clothes is a great innovation.

    I think that he has raised an important concern, most of the engineering and research is more profit making and suitable for maybe twenty to thirty percent of the population of the world while the opposite is also possible and much needed in fact! Like the guys who developed a microscope that costs under a $1.

    This is going to be a man to watch! The work he is doing is so incredibly important and valuable. As climate change continues to displace people around the world, the work he is doing is going to be instrumental in aiding the least of these, our brothers and sisters, much more so than any charity or religious organization! This man is doing God’s work ❤️❤️

    Theres already a mass produced one that works off a foot pedal system that you can buy off aliexpress. We used it to on our camping trips. I think they need to give up on hand cranks it gets too exhausting.
    If you want to buy your own they are called portable washing machines.

    I'm pretty certain there was something similar in late Victorian times (for the wealthier people at the time). But hey, I'm all for making washing easier. When my 4 kids were small, I went through a phase of not having a washing machine, and I used to have to wash 6 people's clothes in the bath. It's *hard* work!!! Good luck to him. I hope that some big philanthropists get behind him.
    TBH, I don't see why a philanthropist doesn't start up an R&D facility for engineers to invent these off-the-grid ideas. It would be the most useful thing, next to immediate aid/medical treatment, that they could do.

    This is one of the moment where having a machine creates more work. Pre washing machines women would wash clothes once every 2 weeks and now people wash cloths 3 times a week. Now since women are predominantly the ones washing cloths in this country. You didn’t really unburdened them but just the opposite.

      I am confused. Did you not just hear the man discuss how this particular washing machine helps with having to deal with cold, wet clothes during colder months of the year? It cuts down the time spent on cleaning and drying-having to wring out freezing, heavy water from washed clothing. This also introduces the concept of hygiene and cleanliness that will hopefully improve quality of life for all the and their families that this “machine” affects.

    • @Yen-jw1ls
      @Yen-jw1ls 3 года назад +3

      They are forced to pile up the dirty clothes before washing in the first place because the natural laundry area is very far. The fact they purposely do 1 every 2 weeks is because they don't want to walk the distance 3 time a week. If the kitchen is very far from your house you would purposely cook 1 week worth of food instead of cooking for 1 meal.
