  • This bbc Sochi free skate commentator carefully agreed that Kim Yuna was robbed of the gold.
If you watched the coverage that night, before Kim Yuna's performance had finished, this commentator said "she's got the gold". Then when the scores were announced he was astonished. Of course the BBC doesn't want to be partial to a controversy, so he had to come explain his action later on this show, apologizing as a commentator. But at the same time as an expert he was saying a lot of the other broadcasters and experts were also baffled on air. When he said "oh maybe the crowd influenced the skaters", we all know what that means ;). Sochi sucks.

Think about it. A girl who was not even in top 5 at the 2013 World Championship, suddenly gets tremendous score at the olympic, and the country that held the olympic was her own home country. Do we need to discuss more about if this competition was fair or not?
2 months before, she got below 190 and 2months later she gets 224. If you are a huge figure skating fan, you should know that this isn't possible.

Sarah Hughes was not a nobody. Check your facts before spewing nonsense. I am no Hughes fan by a long shot but she was the bronze medalist at the previous years worlds, bronze medalist at the last 2 Grand Prix finals, and had beaten Slutskaya and kwan (the 2 favorites) to win Skate Canada that year. She had even been 7th and 5th as an extremely young skater at the 99 and 2000 worlds. She was clearly the 3rd favorite going into the Games. Sotnikova by contrast to Hughes was indeed a nobody, with a best worlds finish of a 9th place, no European title, no Grand Prix final medal and only qualifying to compete there once, and not even a mere grand prix event victory.

It was set up in the wake of the 2002 Pairs Skating controversy at the Salt Lake City Olympics and was supposed to eliminate bias and corruption but it has actually made it worse. She's gonna figure out all too soon that her country was her pimp and they whored her out because they wanted Gold Medals. End of story. She's gonna go into the future wondering why she isn't receiving the kind of scores she did at Sochi. Then it'll all hit home. Her country used her to bring home Gold Medals. Must be awful to have the more than half of the world including experts believing you're not deserving of the Olympic gold medal. I'd rather take the silver in that case! I feel that much more horrible for Adelina because she probably didn't have much to do with the conspiracy, yet, she has to live with it and has THAT MUCH MORE to prove now. I've said this already but I won't be surprise if she announces an 'injury' or an early retirement. With that said, good look to Adelina.
As for Kim Yuna, she introduced poetry back into women's figure skating and made me want to love watching figure skating once again. I hope it won't be much longer until we witness another beautiful skater like her. But until then, long live Queen Yuna!

The male OGM is going to Worlds and the OGM pairs team has an injury keeping them out. The top two ice dance teams both have spent years holding down 1 and 2. Adelina has been running around being arrogant since the Olympics saying this is just the beginning and she wants all the gold out there. The 2014 Worlds would have been the perfect place to start and silence some of the controversy. Not only do I think she is avoiding Worlds because she knows she does not truly measure up, I doubt that she will compete again. In my opinion and yes it's my opinion I have not ever encountered a woman, skater or a QUEEN like yuna Kim, I've recently been watching all the performances and shows that she has done and I'm sat here with tears of joy but anger, knowing that this woman did not win her second gold medal makes me physically and emotionally sick. A woman that has the artistry of someone, I've never have seen to have before, she is dancing on the ice as if she owns it, the 2014 Olympics was no different she was completely mesmerising to watch both her SP and FS were above and beyond better in every way shape and form than anyone else, never been in love with someone as much as I do with queen Yuna I'm just mad that she retired at the wrong time... But then there's Sotnikova

The Doctor you know Doctor I saw this four years ago and a strong argument could be made for Kostner winning this! Why? She had the best short program in the Olympics and was underscored as well and her Long program had some fantastic jumps and first rate footwork. Now I'm not taking anything away from Kim but Kostner was gracious and showed great sportsmanship! As did Kim. If this was judged fairly you would have had a great show! No one ever acknowledges Kostners fantastic performances when this debacle unfolded!

I'm still upset so much with the ugly result, even though almost 3 weeks has passed. Where is justice? Where is sportsmanship? IOC confessed it doesn't have any motivation to fix the wrong with uploading the Sotnikova's performance as a gold performance. I'll not forgive IOC. I'll not support IOC any more. I'm sad 2018 winter Olympics will be held in my county, Korea. But at the same time I hope 2018 Winter Olympics be much fairer than 2014 one in Sochi even though I don't like IOC.

People who are new to figure skating and don't know much about how scoring works think that Yuna had an easier program and Sotnikova was more technical - and that's why Sotnikova won. This argument is coming only by looking at the base value scores. Yes, Yuna had a lower base value score for the free skate but she had a higher base value score in short program. And in total, their SP + LP base value scores differ only by 1.44. This small score difference has posed no problems to Yuna before (as demonstrated by multiple times in the past). Why is that? Because she makes up for this with other scores like GOE and PCS. We not only watch the sport for techinical skills but also artistry, how the skater interprets the music, how much control she has over each of the program element, etc. Yuna is known as the "textbook jumper" because she is skilled at executing all the jumps exactly how they are supposed to be jumped (GOE). She is also known for her poise and how expressive she is with the choreography (PCS). In Sochi, she was severely underscored in GOE and PCS and Sotnikova was overscored. Pay attention to how Sotnikova executes her jumps. She doesn't have great flow in and out of the jump, she has a slanted axis in air, she under-rotates, had a wobbly and shaky landings possibly two-footed, stepped out of a jump, AND she takes off on the wrong edge (inner edge) on Lutz (called a flutz, or cheating lutz). In the past, she has been called on this and recieved wrong edge calls and got negative GOEs but not in Sochi. If you look at her lutz in slow motion, you can see that she prepares for the jump with the correct outer edge but actually jumps/takes off the ice with the inner edge. She was rewarded for this wrong jump with GOEs. And the step-out mistake that got -0.9GOE? According to the rule books, it should have been -2. Also, Sotnikova recieved level 4 for the step sequence while Yuna got level 3. Just watch both their performances and look at the sequence yourself. Sotnikova just flings her arms around a lot and moves her free leg but does not have good speed or acceleration during it, no deep clean edges compared to Kim, lacks effortlessness and flow. AND, with respect to PCS, Sotnikova jumped almost 20 points in 6 months. That just does not happen. To quote Kurt Browning, “I was shocked. What, suddenly, she just became a better skater overnight? I don’t know what happened.". Sotnikova, in the LP, did ATTEMPT a more difficult program but did not execute it properly to justify the grades she got. ARTISTRY COMES ONLY AFTER MASTERING SKILLS AND TECHNIQUES. Yuna kim wasn't just a "ballerina on ice". She delivered the perfect combination of athleticism and artistry and was not rewarded properly.

First of all, there was a problem of the judge assignments. If you look into the judge assignments closely, you would see some judges were not eligible. First, the technical controller was Alexander Lakernik who is Russian. Second, one of the judges was Alla Shekhovtseva who is the president's wife of the Russian Figure Skating Association. Third, the technical specialist was Olga Baranova who is suspected of being dual nationality because she was Russian, but became naturalized in Finland. Fourth, the judge of Ukraine (which separated from Russia), Yuri Balkov, fifth, the judge of Estonia (Which separated from Russia), Zanna Kulik, sixth, the technical specialist, Vanessa Gusmeroll (from France) who was implicated in the conspiracy with Russia at the pair skating events at the Salt Lake City Olympics in 2002.
In other words, 6 judges out of 13 are Russians and pro-Russians. They are half of the judges. How could this absurdity happen? How can we expect them to be fair? Obviously, it was cheating. I ask you to investigate the judge assignments thoroughly.

There was truly a gap in how perfectly jumps, steps and spins are performed, there between yuna kim and Adelina sotnikova.
That cannot be overcome by slightly higher base points.
It's been already declared that Adelina did mistakes almost on every elements with her two performances on Sochi.
All of these facts that her jumps being under-rottated, landing with a full blade and steps being bumped up to a level 4 ..etc were not that easily perceivable to the ones, who don't know much about figure skating.

Sotnikova PLANNED a more difficult program, but didn't even skate it properly. Jumping with the wrong edge, under-rotating, stepping out, the list is endless. And omg, stop saying she skated a more difficult program. The difference in SP+FP base value score was only 1.44. She didn't win because of the difficulty. Sotnikova won b/c of unreasonably high GOEs and PCS. She wasn't penalized for her wrong edges and under-rotations like before, and her PCS jumped like 20 points in 6 months. While Kim wasn't given her well-deserved GOEs and PCS. One of the judges even gave her 0 on a beautiful jump. Don't try to make sense of what happened by belittling Kim's beautiful, clean performances.

Scandal, Fraud, and Death of Figure Skating
    Jesse Helms
    Jesse Helms, Yahoo Contributor Network
Feb 25, 2014 "Share your voice on Yahoo websites. Start Here."
    FlagPost a comment
The 2014 Sochi Olympics will be remembered as the day when the ladies figure skating finally met its demise.
It was the Russian mob politics that robbed Yuna Kim of South Korea of her rightful gold medal in front of the global TV audience. It was the ISU's premeditated device, since they began promoting the 15 year old Julia Lipnitskaia, that turned upside down the COP system as well as the integrity of figure skating.
Scandals and fraud are nothing new to this over a hundred year old sport. But never before was it displayed in so outrageous a manner as in Sochi.
It had been set up already long before the game began. Last year throughout the Grand Prix, Julia Lipnitskaia caused a storm winning every competition with her consistency but questionable qualities and super inflated scores.
As I indicated in the earlier articles, that presaged this storm.
This is not an anomaly in which those pro Russian judges and the mad Russian mob raped and butchered the sport in live TV. It was the ISU that conceived it all several months ago.
And their devious plot finally reared its ugly head.
Lavishing the unthinkable GOE on the then 15 year old's juniorish jump, the ISU judges had been building up the momentum for the grand Sochi fraud.
In the 2013 World championships everything seemed clear that there was no way for any young skater to get even close to the top skaters such as Yuna Kim, Carolina Kostner or Mao Asada as the podium was stonewalled by them.
The mastery of the veteran skaters are far ahead of the youngsters unless the gap should be closed artificially.
That's why the ISU judges began to award a pile of GOE on the young skaters' poor quality jump in the Grand Prix as long as they managed to land them.
You don't have to be an expert. Adelina Sotnikova or Julia Lipnitskaia for that matter didn't change much or only improve mildly from their junior performances.
In the 2013 Worlds Adelina Sotnikova's perfect short program which is an almost exact replica of hers in Sochi earned barely 60. Now nearly 75? Are you kidding?
It can't possibly fall within the range of standard deviation.
Both Julia Lipnitskaia and Adelina Sotnikova were, and still are skaters who categorically belong to the second group; their scores at their best range only between 200- 195.
The truth is that a skater like Adelina Sotnikova or Julia Lipnitskaia needs at least five years of hard training and a bit of luck to reach the kind of level of skating of these trio veterans. Only some errors in competitive context may open a chance for lesser skaters to catch up.
But in Sochi, in all far-fetched fantasy, the case is closed, solid and indisputable.
If judged correctly, Sotnikova should have scored 65 or less in short and 135 in free, which gives her less than 200.
In other words if judged unbiasedly, Sotnikova or even Lipnitskaia cannot, will not and shall not beat those veterans unless the veterans make serious mistakes or multiple flaws in performance. But in Sochi, the trio delivered nearly best performances except Mao Asada who imploded in short, yet came back brilliantly in free.
The incredible Kim did give wonderful performances, given the situation in which she had to wait a long break before she started the free program. Nothing came near to her statuesque presentation except her own monumental performances in Vancouver four years ago.
Only skaters who could ever be compared to Kim were Kostner or Asada. Even with ludicrous placement of Sotnikova after short, Kim still won the game by mile.
But the result showed Adelina Sotnikova earned five points ahead of Kim.
There is no way of justifying this other than an outright fraud.

  • @daikikim4373
    @daikikim4373 10 лет назад +7

Accoridng to technical score,Sotnikova's long program is difficult than Yuna Kim. But she didn't do it well. [Unstable landing(Two-feet landing), Flutz jump(cheating lutz jump by using inside edge(must be judged Wrong edge), Under-rotation, step-level..]
Then Yuna Kim's short program was more difficult than Sotnikova . And the score was almost same. How do you explain this based on your 'difficult program' theory? Yuna Kim didn't make a mistake. (long&short program) And what about Mao Asada? She did 3A and triple combo in her FS) Should she won the free program? No,
Figure skating is not Jumping competetion. In terms of jumps, the russian's technic is coarse though.
The one thing you have to know is that a lot of successive gold medalist won the competition without many jumps than silver medalist. The Important thing is not the quantity but the quality of jump!
Here are a couple links addressing controversy/arguments for the jump quality and techniques,

Secondly, there was a problem of judgments.
Alexander Lakernik, the Russian technical controller didn't point out any technical mistakes of Sotnikova even though she had jumped with the wrong edge, under-rotated and landed with too feet. Furthermore, one of the judges marked GOE +3 for her wrong techniques ridiculously. This competition was a total cheating. One more thing I cannot allow is one of the ISU regulations that no one can protest the judgment. Making an excuse with the preposterous rule and saying there is nothing you can do is ridiculing sports people all around the world. There is a thief, but you cannot catch the thief due to a regulation. Do you think it makes sense?
As I mentioned above, the first and the second problems are the most serious so that you can request investigation of a court of arbitration or International Interpol about this incident by your authority.

  • @daikikim4373

Yuna's performance was not boring! Adelina had poor choreography and did smthing like cheerleading and its only your taste to like it more. Sotnikova and Yuna Kim , they are both good, yes, but there are levels of good. Quoted an The Washington Post, One is good in the way you call your grandmother a good dancer because she does the cha-cha slide at the family reunion. The other is a prima ballerina.
Some say Yuna's program lacked excitement-her music... But Adios Nonino was written in memory of the composer's father after his death...
I don’t think Sotnikova interpreted her music (Carmen) with the subtlety shown by Kim. (even though Sotnikova's music is very easy for interpreting)
Are we supposed to be impressed by a skater waving at a Russian crowd cheering. to get them stirred up, as Sotnikova did? It’s fun, and a nice moment, but does “Habanera” warrant it? Did we see a touch of “Habanera” in her movement? What we saw was an exciting display of athleticism.

New York Times should officially apologize to Yuna Kim and delete the articles and composite images they have already posted about Sotnikova’s performance being greater than hers.
Also, the ISU judges should immediately make a new judgement based on the arguments shown above.
If they have no power to do so, then as a judge, they should release themselves of their seat from the most respected and responsible ISU.
If they did have the power to do so and still judged poorly, it would be considered an act for their own benefit in riches and would be only right to investigate them. They have no rights to make excuses towards anything. It is greatly urged that the ISU and the IOC immediately investigate into the judges
and give the right disciplines to them.

About the Composite Images by New York Times

    2. Different angles of view and locations.

It's not enough to compare something arrcurate, like height of jump.
That comparison is based on different jumps (2A+3T vs 3S+2T)
Fair comparison must be based on the same jumps like us (3Lz+3T vs 3Lz+3T)
In conclusion, the images shown by New York Times saying Adelina Sotnikova was better in jumps and techniques than Yuna.
But it's just a incorrect DATA that lacked accurate technical analyzations and fairness of arcurate comparison.
However, Yuna Kim’s reputation was already damaged by them.

Sotnikova 's double Loop was obviously under-rotated with a wobbly, shaky (and possibly two-footed) landing

Adelina wasn't just a clown, she was a doped clown. Admitted she was one of the athletes who failed their drug test. Got away with it when the B sample came back clean. Knowing what we know about Russian testing labs, we can be assured that B sample was switched.

Alla Shekhovtsova of Russia. She is the wife of a general director of the Russian figure skating federation.
    The her judgment is biased.
The list of freaking other judges:
    Franco Benini of Italy.
    Zanna Kulik of Estonia.
    Nobuhiko Yoshioka of Japan.
    Hélène Cucuphat of France.
    Karen Howard of Canada.
    Adriana Domanska of Slovakia.
    All liars.

Yuna wins but The Spirit of Russia take her medal of Gold.
An important question is : Where Yuna-Kim robbeed ?
The Most Important Question is : Where was the Olympic Spirit in that competition ?

No, this isn't a magician Olympics. It is a figure skating Olympics. Also, it is not a "let's see how many jumps I can do" Olympics. If they are just going to count the jumps, and not how WELL they are done, just get rid of GOEs and PCS. Some are quick to point out the one less triple Kim did in the free skate. Little do they know, Kim did one MORE double jump, meaning the difference was ONE TURN. And if you count the under-rotated/pre-rotated Sotnikova's jump, as well as two-footed landing and step out, the difference is nothing. There is a reason why Kim was a favourite to win gold. Why? Because she has textbook jump techniques (superior speed, height, distance) and is a MASTER at interpreting the music with complex and beautiful choreography. The world is angry, not because they hate Sotnikova, but because an incomplete, still a junior-level skater beat a true master at the sport. Please don't brush off this scandal by thinking that all this is coming from fans who JUST wanted to see Kim win. What happened at Sochi was a disgrace to the sport.

If some people (the judges and tech panel) tainted the last performance of an innocent athlete, would you be alright? This is why many fans and past skating legends are mad. There was a mistake in judging. If you were familiar with the judging system and have been following the sport for a long time, it is obvious. Mistakes do happen. When atheletes make mistakes, they are (and should be) deducted marks. But what happens when judges make mistakes? Innocent athletes suffer again (Kim was unjustly denied her second OGM and Sotnikova is under much criticism. This is not her fault, I agree. It's the judges fault). What I am asking for is respect towards what can be a beautiful sport.
