Glad to see this. Own a D750 for events as well as an 800E for headshot work and they're such a joy to use. Even simple things like the colours and grain just feel professional. Been using a bunch of different every day carry cameras and when I come back to these I'm reminded just how good they are for professional work.

Hi Martin, I too love the Nikon D750 camera and Nikkor 24-120mm f/4 lens. Some of my favorite travel images were shot with this combo. As you mentioned the low light capability is phenomenal with great results at ISO 6400. Thanks so much for the great content and info.

I grabbed myself a D610 and 24-120 as I'm all Canon otherwise and wanted one lens to try this camera out. Feels like even the 5D C has better highlight retention, but this one has massive shadow recovery, basically ISO can be changed in post with no negative. The 6D or 5D certainly can't do that, though the 6D is probably better at low light overall. I agree on the 50. A 40 and 90 would probably cover my if I ever started over and killed the zooms. 35-85 might also work for me, or 50 for just one.

I recently sold my D750 that I had for four years and upgraded to a D780. It didn't really cost much because I got a good price for the D750 and bought a grey market D780. The live view is night and day better, but the biggest surprise was how much quieter the shutter is.

I've recently landed on mine and dang does it feel good to have that. I bought a D610 and then D750 when they each came out all those years ago. Image quality is so very similar, but the grip and tilting screen keep me reaching for the D750 which now has 225,000+ shutter actuations and is still going strong. I prefer my 'D' series lenses 24-28-35-50, although use the 85 f/1.8G and 70-200 f/4 as well. Today my everyday camera is the Df, mostly with the 50 f/1/4D.

    • @seanfshannon

Any particular reason why you prefer the D lenses (I have a few myself)? Interested to know your thoughts.

    • @fairwayfrank
      @fairwayfrank 7 месяцев назад

@@seanfshannon I bought the 50mm f/1.4 D years ago for covering sports, high school basketball in poorly-lit gyms primarily, and liked the small size and weight. I had the 24-85 f/2.8-4 Macro D lens, which was a solid performer once stopped down, but one day my camera fell off the tripod and while it was okay, the lens was totaled. Rather than replace it with something similar, and just as heavy, I decided to go small. These D lenses slip nicely into cargo pockets and I can head out with one lens on a camera and two in my pockets - hell, they'll even fit into a front pockets of my bluejeans if needed. So that's a big part of it for me. I can put the 70-200 f/4G lens on camera (or the 85G) and pocket up any combination of the four Ds as I see fit, depending on the location. Sure, sometimes I don't have the right one, but I can live with that. Another reason is the lack of coating these lens have. I also have the Nikon Df, which, other than the old D200 I used to have, is my favorite Nikon, and it really doesn't measure up to today's more expensive, higher-quality lenses, but it too is small and light. I don't market my work, although I do sell a framed print now and then at a local gallery, so I don't need the latest/greatest in gear. The crazy thing is I still shoot a lot of film, but mostly in 120, and I don't have a Nikon SLR to use these on. Go figure. Perhaps because of my film work I'm not that interested in today's high-res, look-alike landscape, and prefer the look I get from these older, almost-vintage lenses. That's my story.

Hi Martin, amazing video as usual mate. I love how down to earth you are. It really shows how much experience you have. I learned wedding photography back in the film era from a photographer that used a Nikormat with just a 28mm and a 50mm. That was it. He'd do a whole wedding on 2 rolls of 36 exposures, manual focus throughout and the pictures were bang on incredible! That taught me a lot and it helps me now, to really 'read between the lines' when it comes to decide what gear to buy, what do I really need, etc. You clearly have this down to a 't' mate. At the end you talked about if you only had one lens it would most likely be a 50mm. Well I have a Canon 5D classic and at the moment only use the 50mm f1.8 STM on it when I take pictures at weddings and parties. That is my main camera and lens at the moment. I do hope to upgrade to get a camera that is a little better in low light, but I love how the 50mm works. I had to get used to it, but now that I have I love it.

I also have the 5D classic and the 50mm F1.8. I was never happy with its low light ability, both with ISO and focusing. I recently got the Sigma 35mm ART lens, F1.4. The difference does not seem that much - from 1.8 to 1.4 seems marginal, but it was like a miracle landslide. It lets in a whole lot more light, and it is super sharp even at highest ISO. (If you are set on 50mm, Sigma has 50mm version of the lens as well.) I think that is the key - with lower light the Ef 50mm F1.8's focusing gets compromised, plus it's not very sharp wide open, and the 5Dc captured it as if the image was super noisy. The Sigma ART however is super sharp even at F1.4, and even with ISO3200 the shots are quite a lot better and with much less noise than the EF 50mm F1.8 at ISO1600! It's an expensive lens, it took quite a while to save up for it, but got a mint used one from Japan, the wait was very well worth it!
It changed my world so much that now I just forgot about changing the camera altogether... it's quite a lot bigger than the 50mm, but actually it feels a LOT better with the 5Dc than the EF50mm did which was puny and I did not feel the camera / lens was stabilized enough for shooting. The 5dC/Sigma ART combo is rock solid, and feels perfectly balanced. The 5Dc loves that lens! Super fast and very accurate focus. The focusing is so much better than any lens I tried on the 5D, that I do not need the feel to upgrade the body for better focusing. Even though it's a heavy lens, I do not find the weight bothersome as it balances so well with the body (1620g together with the camera). The best lens feel/match I ever had with the 5Dc!!! I also use it with the M50 mark II mirrorless, and there it feels obscenely oversized, like and elephants trunk on a tick. There it feels heavy and tiresome, even though the body is much lighter than the 5Dc. Not comfortable to hold at all, although it takes that little mirrorless up a few notches in capability.

@@ShutterNChill thanks for the advise. At the moment I just can't afford another/better lens, but hopefully some day I will. One thing I have noticed is that better lenses most often tend to produce less noise in camera. So I can understand that even though the 50mm f1.8 STM produces some nice images, a better lens will be mile better. Well guess I will start saving up for a better lens as well. I think for what I shoot, I would rather have something like a 24-70, so it gives me the wide and at 70mm a little more reach than the 50, cause at times the 50 is just a little short.

Amateur photography is a lifelong hobby of mine. My photography journey started with film cameras back in the late 80s with a Pentax 6x7 as well as Nikon 35mm film cameras, so I have a lot of vintage Nikon lenses. I completely leapfrogged DSLRs and was an early adopter mirrorless cameras with Fuji, and Ive owned a lot of their cameras and lenses from different ranges, and they are great, love them, but I wasn’t totally satisfied. About 5 years ago I decided I wanted to try full frame, but I didn’t want to start buying into a whole new system, or shell out for an expensive flagship camera, so I picked up a used D810. My favourite things to shoot are Macro, landscape and nightscapes. And the D810 has been absolutely amazing for all of those. I use the same 24-120 f4 and the 80-200 f2.8d ED for landscapes, Not the lightest setup along with carrying tripod, but im still pretty fit and strong so it’s no big deal. No tilt screen or custom dial , but I absolutely love it. Its my favourite camera. Theres something special about the later model Nikon DSLRs. They are bulletproof, im not concerned about bumping it or getting wet. The buttons are where they are supposed to be. It’s heavy but super comfortable. The optical viewfinder is big and bright, and i dont need to take 500 batteries with me for extended trips. I can see why you chose the d750. Nothing more is needed

Just came across your channel. Great content. I am just a hobbyist, but own a d750. I agree that the highlights blow out if you look sideways at it. I guess the grass always seems greener, but have been itching to upgrade to mirrorless for real-time evf exposure sim, and faster AF. Your comments on mucking about with af modes was surprising for me. I shoot with primes (1.8g) and find focus is pretty slow in low light. Otherwise i reckon the d750 still holds its own, especially in terms of image quality. You have made me think again about “upgrading”. The hugeness of the z primes is still the only thing holding me back from the tasty looking zf all the same…

I was a big Canon user for many years. Always thought they had great lenses at a reasonable price. Travelled extensively with them also. Thanks to the original 100-400mm L I got great portraits as well. I was completely satisfied thus far and continued to used the setup - 5DMKII for all work scenarios including real estate photography for a short period. Coupled with the 17mm TS lens it was a dream. I did somewhere around 800K images before selling to upgrade. It was around 2012 when Canon came out with the MKIII. They were asking something like $1000 extra (AUD) for the privilege. When I saw no improvement in the shadow noise dept I jumped ship to Nikon for the D800E. Not a small consideration, but I figured it was going to be the upgrade path for the future. Of course I got a reasonable price for the lenses so I wasn’t really out of pocket that much anyway. As you mention in a later video You want a setup you don’t have to worry about. However… I had the D800 mounted on a tripod together with the 24-70mm 2.8 - they took a dive down a cliff in Tasmania and that as they say was that. Lens brand new was totalled ($2,200 I think). They body I had repaired for $1000. To cut an already long story short (-er) I went for primes to replace it. Specifically, Hasselblad MF lenses with a Mirex adapter. They were a joy to work with. Finishing up… the shadow areas I found to be much superior to the Canon 5Ds. Super smooth transitions with almost no discernible green/red pixel combos. Still using the D800 and BTW made a very nice video with the Zeiss 40mm Distagon (only 1080P). Had a really nice feel to it. Storytime over. Thanks for your videos too. PS. I’m sitting next to a one metre canvas image of the Flinders Ranges taken with the 5DMKII. It’s so detailed (24-70mm). Canon colours are beautiful.

Until recently I haven't had the time to do landscape photography and I would like to be able to print and display some of the breath takingl scenery I come across without breaking the bank or my gear. The D750 isn't too big but I don't want anything larger. I haven't seen any of your content specifically addressing M43 for this type of use and if I've missed it I apologize. M.C. I use the Zeiss 50mm f1.4 ZF.2 with my Nikon D700. I bought it because coming from film photography I was chasing the intangible Zeiss look which I got from my Rolleiflex and Hasselblad cameras, particularly the Zeiss Tessar lens which is criticised unfairly because it’s not a Planar. Of course it isn’t, but it has its own signature look. The 50mm is a Planar design and does enough especially at f1.4 to take the hard edged digitally look out of the images. And yes in my opinion there is pop to the files. However the lens is heavy and I’m no spring chicken, more of a summer/autumn chicken. Out of curiosity I photograph a favourite subject that I go back to quite often. On the most recent visit albeit in different lighting conditions taking my Nikon D200 and Nikkor Pre-Ai (converted) 5.5cm macro f3.5 lens i ended up very pleased with those sharp and filmic files. I also use Nikon’s first f1.4 standardish lens, the Nikkor 5.8cm which is just okay but for portraits with the D200 is great. I’m not really a zoom lens person. If I was I would buy the Nikon DX 17-55mm f2.8 and sleep soundly at night. None of this has any real relevance to your video other than using whatever equipment gives you the right results. Funnily enough I stopped trying to second guess what others like to see in my images but my Holga plastic camera photographs always draw positive attention 🙄.

Wanted to try full frame so bought a Canon 5D classic based on your and others recommendations along with three Canon lens 40 and 50mm stm and 24-85 usm. The colors with the 5D classic are wonderful but the camera is not as versatile or as easy to shoot as the D7100. Perhaps I should have tried Nikon full frame.

I also have the D7100, along with the D3S. Recently, I purchased the Z8 and absolutely love it. I also purchased the Z14-24 lens, the Z105 Macro lens, and the Z180-600 lens with the 1.4X converter. When I purchased the D3S, I purchased the F24-70 and the F70-200 plus the 2X adapter. With the Z8, I purchased the F to Z adapter, so now can use all the lenses on the Z8. Currently, I now have the range from 14mm to 840mm with the teleconverter in use. So, my love goes from macro to birds and squirrels. Being retired, I load up and head out to the forest when ever is possible.

After a long pause I started getting back to landscapes again (I have a D600 from 10 years ago) and was seeing what would be the best value for money in a mirrorless. My conclusion so far has been that probably R8 would be the best bang for buck for landscapes as the new Canon sensors seem to have a good dynamic range now that they lacked before and the camera is actually relatively cheap and there are multiple good wide lenses for the Canon and some of them are cheap as well.

@@MartinCasteinYes, for a starter lens with Canon I was thinking about the RF 15-30MM or even with the 16mm prime to save some money.
I thought I had seen the R8 body for less than 1000 Euros somewhere, but perhaps I remember incorrectly and am confusing it with my other option the Nikon Z6. When I was looking at the Canon lenses there seemed to be more options in the wide zooms and even the new crazy wide 10-20mm that seemed interesting. And also a 35mm which I prefered while the Nikon had 40mm which is close but not exactly the same. I'm happy with the image quality of the D600 but it had the oil splatter to sensor issue that newer got properly fixed so this time I'm definitely going with a mirrorless.

Here's a thought. My Nikon DX D7200 is a little lighter than the D600 and D750. The dynamic range (DXO for example) of all three is about the same at ISO 100 which you'll be using for landscape. What's more if you put the D7200 on f/5.6 the DOF on the D7200 will be about the same as the FF cameras at f/8 so you'll be using a *faster* shutter speed on the DX camera for the same image quality. Any downsides? Well there is no articulated screen ala D750 but you do get a few refinements versus the D600 e.g. press 'OK' to see a zoom in to 100%. I'm getting a used 16-85 DX zoom for my camera to see how much shadow recovery I can get. Of course there is a bit of a problem with the lack of wide angle primes..

Now, I can see I could get a decent D750 for $500 on ebay, and I have all the lenses that go with it, should I ? It will also give you worse colour though.
Id still pick the D700 for portraits over the d750 but the D750 for everything else Id say. But realistically you can shoot anything and everything on the D700. Id only upgrade if you think any of those features really matter to you. The only thing for me is really the tilt screen.

I purchased the Nikon Z8, it’s great for action photography but I am a bit underwhelmed by the global IQ vs my other 24MP Nikon FX cameras. Not sur if it’s due to the high MP sensor or the electronic shutter but when zoomed into the portraits, it clearly lacks fine detail despite the high resolution : it looks that even at lower iso, heavy noise resolution is applied on both raw and jpeg, ending up into a blend of mushy textures and pixels. Of course when zoomed out pictures seem good but I like to see pure detail and textures…The files are huge as well. I needed this camera for high action shots and excellent video but I would advice other shooters to think twice and look for a Z6ii or ZF instead. 24MP is more than enough for many applications.

@@MartinCastein I wish I could post you samples here. I am using a variety of excellent AFS lenses and S primes, the focus is perfectly nailed by the camera so that’s not the issue, i tried various apertures from F2 to F8, I checked the speeds were all above 1/500 to 1/4000 and kept the iso between 200 and 1600 depending on the shots (both outdoors and indoors) subjects were not moving fast or steady. If compared to my Sigma Quattro H shots (which doesn’t excel in higher iso) the Quattro H shows perfect textures, even at slower speeds, so do my D780 cameras or even my D500. When zooming on clothes or the eyes or my portraits, The Z8 clearly exhibits a lot of noise reduction (I switched it to off) reducing pure detail. it’s a bit annoying. It also seems that the pixels are not joining together to produce true detail, this may be due to the lack of physical or global shutter. The electronic shutter is maybe super fast but it’s maybe the reason why the pixels don’t produce true details.
