Vikings were marauders and killers. They didn't knock on people's doors asking for permission, they'd break it down and kill everyone. If he did, then he should have granted something like wealth or lands for his deeds or at least, let him perform the sacrifice of Borg's man before their people instead of letting bjorn do it.
Loyalty, respect and affection must be shown, not only told. Look what the frank emperor did after Rollo had defended Paris the first time: even after he had already given him lands, wealth and his own daughter in marriage, he gave him the iron hand of Frankia, thus he bestowed him his trust before his entire court. And by the way, he assured Rollo's loyalty to himself.

Then yes, he betrayed him and their people and Ragnar forgave him, but Rollo still kept safe his family safe from borg and the strategy of taking back Kattegat was Rollo's, not Bjorn's. So Ragnar wanted his son to become a "man", but he knew as well that his brother was ambitious and, at that time, he wanted to be forgiven and reaccepted by his people; so, if you are an important man (in the middle ages where the story is set, i mean, where loyalty amongst families isn't granted at all) and you want loyalty from your followers, you have to give something in return, even if it is family.

Fair fight? Did Normandy belong to Ragnar and Rollo stole it from him? Did the frank princess belong to him? No, they didn't.
Rollo was defending what belonged to himself.

He didn't care for Ragnar when he got tortured by Earl Haraldson in s1? He didn't care for Ragnar when he kept Ragnar's family safe from Borg and helped his brother taking Kattegat back in s2? He didn't care for Ragnar when he was almost killed in wessex in s3?
Rollo wasn't a saint, especially in the previous seasons, but he also proved his loyalty many times. Did Ragnar reward this? No. And this is the outcome.

If it was so, then why did Ragnar never give Rollo some lands to rule, wealth or even only a honorific title? Because deep down he was afraid his brother would have become more powerful than him and would have stolen fame from him.
But in the end, both of the brothers gained what was theirs to be: Ragnar Norway, Rollo Normandy.

Did Ragnar and Bjorn truly believe that after they were the ones who broke the deal and attacked Paris with treachery and sacrilege, the Franks would have left the camp safe and sound? If they didn't accept the franks' terms, theyvwould have been slaughtered nevertheless.
