  • Here is a little pronunciation "secret" that will help you to sound more natural when you speak English. It may also help your comprehension when you listen to native English speakers.
    This video is about disappearing syllables. They are also called missing or dropped syllables. The technical term for this is syncope.

    When I'm in doubt I think which way is easier to pronounce and in 90% of the cases I'd be right. I am a diletant on the field, but I believe languages (spoken lngs) tend to simplify. In my native one some words that used to be dialect now are the norm (except for purists😉)

    There's a pattern in words like these. They are stressed AA-a-a, and the two weak syllables are separated by /r/ or /l/. cam - ər - a, fam - əl - y, and so on. The unstressed syllables must be totally unstressed, with weak vowels. That's why "separate" (adjective) is compressed to "sep-rit" but "separate" (verb) is sep-er-eight

      Don't worry - if you can understand most people and be understood by other people, that's all that really matters :). I often point out differences between accents because I know some students want to know, but it's not usually vital for you to know them.

    • @EnglishwithMax
      @EnglishwithMax  2 года назад

      We actually always pronounce "solely" with two syllables (so no disappearing syllable). But yes, we usually pronounce "comfortable" with three syllables instead of four. 👍 :)

    • @aram5642
      @aram5642 2 года назад

      @@EnglishwithMax OK, I mixed up the way syllables are divided/counted in English and got the result of three. Admittedly, the pronunciation contains 2 syllables, like so: ruclips.net/video/jELJkxNJuy0/видео.html which is how I pronounce this word.
      When it comes to counting syllables, I would say that `comfortable` actually counts as one :D = `comf` + a cluster of `tumbled` (sic!) consonants
