100 Words You Say Wrong (Common pronunciation mistakes in English)

- Here are 100 words that people often say wrong in English. Do you make any of these common pronunciation mistakes?
English pronunciation is a real challenge for people learning English, because the spelling is so irregular. Just think of all those silent letters...
If you sometimes say these words incorrectly, don't worry - you're not alone! It is very common to mispronounce these words.
Please note:
When I say "British English/pronunciation", I'm referring to RP (received pronunciation). When I say "American English/pronunciation", I'm referring to General American. Obviously there are many other English accents and dialects, but it's impractical to look at all of them in a video like this.

Great to see you again. It's been quite a while. I just want to let you know that I recently registered for your English vocabulary course on Udemy, and I truly enjoy the content. I think it's one of the best English courses on the internet. Love & Appreciation all the way from Johannesburg,South Africa.
Thank you so much! I'm really glad you're enjoying it :).
Yay! I will sigh as well. Ta for recommendation!
We, In América Speak American English..
We Find The British Pronunciation Annoying
But it's the original 😊 The truth hurts, doesn't it.
How nice to have you back, Max! 💟We really missed your lessons. I've added some new entries to my notebook of mispronounced words.
Here are some that were already there: southern, vehicle, exhibit, bargain, celtic, binoculars, pseudonym, scarce, Holmes.
Thank you! 😃
And those are good words too! I'll keep them in mind in case I make a similar video :).
単語1つずつ丁寧に教えてくれて本当に良い勉強になってます❤
Thanks Max for your lessons! I love it.
It's not that I don't know how to pronounce basic English words, its the way you speak which is so unique and beautiful . I watch it to get entertained
she is very captivating.
Thanks, Max.
This lesson is amazing and helpful, especially for ESL students.
Thanks a lot for investing your time on your RUclips channel. It's always a great and pleasant (and instructive) moment.
Hi Max, glad to see you back again. I missed your lessons.
One thing that is very contraintuitive in English pronunciation is the way how words with many syllabels are pronounced, like the examples you had in your video: mischievous, photography, thermometer. I would find it very helpful if you could prepare a lesson with such words. I'm sure, I pronounce most of them wrong.
Yes... unfortunately we have to learn each word individually :S.
As a brazilian english speaker (attempting...), these tips are super valueble. Thanks, Max!
Oh valuable. Correct and post before you send, there are options in the device.
It is an amazing video with a lot of learning. Frankly speaking, pronunciation of words has been such a tough challenge for people whose native language is not English because of the linguistic interference of other languages. I watched the video from A to Z and I too much learned from you. Keep on sharing your valuable experiences. From Mozambique.
Many thanks for your kind words :).
So long no see Max!!!
I hope my writing is correct.
I just want to thank you for all
Your good lessons,I don't miss
any of them.God Bless You Max.
Thank you for your support!
(We actually say "long time no see", but otherwise your writing is correct! 👍)
Thank you a lot for the lesson, and welcome back! 😊
Thank you! 😃
So glad you are back, Max! 😃😃😃
thank you, Max. Much helpful.
So glad that teacher Max is still giving courses. It's a good news for me
❤️

Thank you so much, Diana!
Very good job as usual .Thanks a lot for your efforts.
I love this lady.prefect instructor.
Welcome back professor Max, you are special, you have allowed many people from all over the world to learn English.
I want to report this to the australian government. With all my best wishes to you. Thanks, a hug. Alessandro from Italy
Thank you very much, Alessandro :).
Two words that I've noticed are being mispronounced more and more frequently these days are "contribute" and "homage".
Thanks for trying to preserve the beautiful English language!
Thanks, i have serious problems with pronunciation, this lesson is very important 👍
Very helpful, thanks.
It would have been good to mention 'area' next to 'idea' :) Other examples that come to mind: corps/corpse, coup (d'état), finite/infinite. In general, people whose native language applies stress mostly on penultimate syllable tend to apply it the same way while speaking English, so they would stress all these words incorrectly: attribute, attributed, request, response. This holds true especially in tech. Myself, I usually forget where to stress longer words, such as 'administrative', and need to double-check.
Thanks! I'll keep those in mind for other videos :).
I thank you so much!
Wow !
I don't have any word to describe how much you help me to improve my English.
May God bless you ❤
You're very welcome!
Hello Max, welcome back to RUclips ☺. I hope you're well and that you'll have time to make other videos. Thumbs up, good job !

Fantastic way of teaching!
I love learning the difference between British and American English. There's a fun contrast between nuisance and coupon.
also 8:47 bussy :)
Your Australian accent is easier to be understood by Spanish people. You are absolutely the Best. Many thanks indeed for you being you.
Really exciting lecture. Thank you teacher.❤❤❤
Thourought enjoyed it. Thanks.
This sharing is very good, hope can do more in the future. Thank you.
Большое спасибо, Вам
Many thanks!
Hey Max, it is an exhaustive list of mispronounced words. People often mispronounce words like nephew, sew, answer etc.
Hi I am an American and this was refreshing. Thank you.
Also some confusing of pronunciation: island vs. Ireland vs. Iceland. Thanks for video. Kind Regards Markku
I'm italian and my English is very sloppy, and you can imagine my pronunciation... is worse!!! Your accent and way of speaking are very easy to understand, and I like the fact that you make the comparison between British and American English
Very nice class!!! thank you Max 🙂
My pleasure! And thank you for your kind words :).
@@EnglishwithMax
I agree that it is nice to have the comparison between British and American English. I am a proponent of students choosing one over the other before beginning to learn English and never going to the other so as to not confuse themselves or anyone else. I wish I could do the British English well enough to give both examples but I am afraid I would butcher the British English unfortunately and never on purpose. I like the sound of British English but am all American in speech! Thanks for your videos!
Thank you very much🙏🏾, a great contribution for non-native English speakers like me. I never forget my shock on the day I learned the correct pronunciation of the two words … Lingerie and Paradigm… There’re many others I still need to learn. English is sometimes strange, do you agree 😂?
@@netsanetfirdu9117 Indeed! And one of my next videos is on "lingerie" :D.
Thank you for your time. you are an excellent teacher.your method is very easy.see you soon.😅
Thank you very much, you have actually helped me a lot. l used to pronounce most of the words you have taught us wrongly.
thank you a lot ❤ especially for the “heir”
Opportunity, situation, latitude, adjudge, adjoin, debris, debut, luxury, almond, education, intestine, entrepreneur.....these are a few words I want to know the right pronunciations of. Thanks for your guidance👍
Good words! I'll keep those in mind :).
Wonderful presentation ❤
Nice lesson.Thanks.
Cảm ơn Chị rất nhiều thank you so much my dear friend
Amazing work. Thanks a lot from south east Melbourne ❤❤❤
Gracias. Desde Chile, muy buenas las correcciones para pronunciar mejor. Saludos
Happy to see you again Max.I missed you.
Very Helpful Lesson!!
Thank you SO MUCH for this
- love perfect English, hate the lazy 'mistakes'.
I am sick of the 'ng' being left out (for the Americanised 'in' ') at end of words such as 'singing', 'walking', etc!
Thank you! 🙏🏻
Dear Max I really enjoy watching your videos, thank you very much 🙏🙏⚘️⚘️
Good to see you back with new RUclips video after a long time -- please do it frequently -- I am your fan and a student from India
I like this video! Many thanks to the author of the channel for the recommendations! The problem with many people is that they want to take a "magic pill" or get "secret knowledge" and immediately have skills and abilities. However, the truth of life is that knowledge, skills, and abilities do not come by themselves. You can't learn a foreign language without doing anything, without wasting your time and effort, just like you can't learn to ride a bike lying on a comfy couch, listening to lectures and watching videos about "modern methods of learning" on a bike. To really learn something, you have to really practice every day. You're going to fall down while you're learning, and you're going to get bumps - that's normal! The ups and downs of learning are an integral part of our lives. Motivation from success and depression from failure will always be your study companions. However, every student has problems in his or her studies that he or she lacks the knowledge to solve. It can be: poor memorization of words; no progress in language learning; the student can speak, but does not understand speech by ear; misunderstanding of grammar; incorrect pronunciation, etc. Agree that a problem you don't know how to solve is very demotivating. In order to find the answer to our question we have to spend a lot of time to read videos, articles and books by polyglots. In today's world, we have to solve problems as quickly as possible. I don't have time to study and analyze a huge amount of information. My goal is to master the basic knowledge of a foreign language as quickly as possible and already start earning money effectively in the international arena. I settled on the practical guide by Yuriy Ivantsiv " Polyglot's Notes: practical tips for learning foreign language". This book is always in my bag. If I have a problem while learning a language, I quickly find the answer in this book. There are many different techniques and tips for learning a foreign language in Polyglot Notes. I have made my own individual schedule and plan for language learning. Now I know what I am going to study, how I am going to study, when I am going to study and what results I am going to achieve. No problem could stop me! With an effective language learning plan my professional skills are more and more in demand internationally every day. Friends, don't stop there! Everyone has talents that millions of people around the world need! Learn the language and make your ideas and dreams come true! Thanks to the author of the channel for the informative and useful video! Your videos motivate me.
Thank you very much!
And all the best for your language learning journey!
Just discovered you, you're great! I've always been fascinated not only by UK vs. American pronunciations, but reginal accents in countries. Take "business" that you covered. In the Deep South of the US, it may even be called "bidness." I was born and grew up in the Mid-Atlantic of the US, which is pretty much known for having little accent compared to the rest of the US. Anyway, darn those English with their silent letters, can you all Crownsters just clean them up by removing them to help the non-native speakers :)
Thanks very much!
And yes, I definitely think that some spelling reform is in order!
Hi Max....love your lessons.....
Hi Max! My first comment on your RUclips page is to tell you that I am glad to see you are back after long months of absence. I hope you’re back on a regular basis😊.
Au fait, je voulais te dire que j'ai eu l'occasion de voir la vidéo où tu parles français et je dois dire que j'ai été agréablement surpris par la perfection de ton français et entre autre l'accent, chose difficile à maitriser surtout pour les natifs anglais.
So I wonder if you’re still practicing Molière’s language because if I’m not mistaken you have a saying that says... If you don’t use it, you lose it
Oui, elle parle parfaitement français.
@@sylvieleboucherf D'après ce que j'ai pu écouter, pratiquement le niveau d'un natif. Juste un léger accent à peine perceptible;)
From what I could listen, practically the level of a native. Just a slight accent barely noticeable;)(English translation, because after all we are here for the English😉)
Thank you, you're very kind :). I don't speak it much these days, and it is, indeed, getting a bit rusty!
@@EnglishwithMax You're welcome! Je vais continuer ce message en français ce qui te permettra de le pratiquer un peu et d'enlever cette petite rouille qui s'installe sur ton français, ce qui est dommage car tu as dû investir beaucoup de temps et de travail pour arriver à un si bon niveau :))
Thanks a lot
I enjoyed the video very much
I like the lesson. Thank you very much.
Max....best english coach in the world.
Hello namesake!))) Glad to see you again !!!
Hey, thanks!
Great!
I have not started the video yet. I consider myself very literate so I will watch for a while (longer if I find any) and see if you have any words that I pronounce incorrectly. Edit, I checked your video and you pronounced the words correctly. Well done. (that is rare)
Dear Lady, you are a fountain of civility and wisdom!!! I'm looking forward to listening to everything you are willing to teach!!😇
Thank you very much for your support :).
Beautiful !
I benefited a lot from your pronunciation of the words. Thank you very much, a fan of the English language from Saudi Arabia . شكرا جزيلا🤣 أنت وسيمة وجوهرة
Thank you so much!!
Max is a very pleasant person. Very easy to understand and her smile makes her, yup, very pleasant.
Max beautiful teacher thanks for your efforts
Oh my gosh, finally a new video 🎉🎉🎉♥
With bundle of thanks ❤❤❤❤
Thanks for the video.
I appreciate so so much,thankyou
Dear Teacher Max,
You have a gift from God to teach. It is a great jewel you received from our Father.
If I have a teacher like you with for private lessons, I would not need an IPA alphabet.
But as I am alone in my country, I am not accompanied by English native speakers, IPA is absolutely the must tool in studying English.
Thanks for sharing
Thank you very much!
THANKS TEACHER
Thank you !!!😎
Thank you.
Glad you’re back 😊❤💐
🤗
Thank you, this was brilliant, the word history is sometimes promised wrongly too
Yes, that's true!
I admire your intelligente with words, and I must say that I developed my pronunciation learning from you ❤.
I'm very flattered! And thank you for watching!
I'am a student of 63 years old from Lima Peru.I think this class is very important specially when you travel to U SA.Thans you are nice!!!!.
Glad it was helpful!
Excellent video! I'm familiar with all those IPA symbols so this was fun to watch.
On a related topic, a local radio host in here San Diego had a long-standing show called "A Way With Words" where people could call in and talk about their local dialects and so forth, and eventually the host wrote a book with the title "There Is No Zoo in Zoology" which I instantly had to have, being constantly irritated by the dumb mistakes so many people made so often. In the above case, the author pointed out that "Zoology" is a combination of "Zoa," the Greek word for "Life" and "ology" meaning "the study of" as you probably know, but when even employees at our famous Zoo would make this mistake I had to do something about it!
So I bought this book and several others, including "Is There a Cow in Moscow?" (no, because the Russian is Mosk-VA), "What in the Word?" and "The Accidents of Style."
Sadly, the author, Charles Harrington Elster, passed away a while back, but these books are still available on line and I had no problems acquiring them if you're interested.
My name is Jeff Wells and I'm guilty of being an especially annoying Grammar Nazi online, so be careful what you write ;)
Interesting! I didn't know that about "zoology". (But rest assured I've been pronouncing it correctly :D.)
Glad to hear it! Another campaign of mine (it's okay, I'm retired and relatively harmless) is to hunt down and slay all these wild apostrophes that show up everywhere these days, not just in America either much to my surprise.
as a turkish you help me learn english thank you ❤
Good. You have a nice easy style. Liked it. Thank you and well done.
Thank you for your kind words :).
