Cleared Hot Episode 74 - Power hour with Black Rifle Coffee CEO Evan Hafer

  • Evan Hafer is the founder and CEO of Black Rifle Coffee. Prior to founding BRCC he spent twenty years serving this country, first as a Special Forces soldier (Green Beret), then as a contractor for the Central Intelligence Agency, completing multiple tours to Iraq and Afghanistan.
    Not all military experience is applicable to the business world, and not all veterans are well suited to create, build, and continue to grow a business. There are, however, many skills that have impact and applicability to business.
    We spent this hour discussing lessons learned, best practices, successful decisions, and mistakes made in the journey of growing BRCC.
    The last twenty minutes we discussed the long term impact of war on the individual, war crimes, and the ability to detach from an occupation before it is all that defines you.

      American Football is the number two sport for assuredly getting a brain injury or other lasting injury, right after Icehockey. If you compare the fraction of people dying or getting seriously wounded in training or being a seal, to the fraction of people in AF getting brain injuries, I would hazard a guess, that being a seal is safer.

    Iv been a Stumpf fan for as long as he has been out there. I still remember the time I was at skydive Deland in Florida a couple years ago manifesting myself for the next load and I saw the names of everyone else on the flight. It said Andy Stumpf and I felt like I was about to jump with a Tom Cruise.... Some people look at Hollywood folks as heroes. But these kind of guys are my real life heroes for sure!

    @EvanHafer I'm a former Army Infantry enlisted / officer and Iraq combat veteran. What a blessing listening to you and your friend. I know what you mean about friendships, trust, the kind of people you work with, etc. I was always a mission / troops first guy while oftentimes operating in an environment of me-first officers and even some NCOs. Although I was combat arms I was never near your level; as a consequence, I was around a lot more me-first men who were far more interested in personally looking good and steel plating their fourth point of contact than putting the mission and their troops first. In fact, I got in severe hot water on a few occasions for not complying with superiors who were willing to needlessly compromise the mission and troops. After I got out of the Army I tried operating in the corporate environment as a middle level manager and although I was mission successful and the people who worked under me liked me a lot; ultimately, I couldn't stomach the lack of the character attributes you value and espouse. I couldn't do it anymore so I tooled up, honed my woodworking skill set and became a carpenter. Now, I have additional complementary skill sets yet I'm alone and it sucks. I can't begin to tell you how much I miss the camaraderie and friendships like you have and have built. You're blessed and clearly a blessing to so many others. Thanks for being you in a world that needs so much more of what you have.
    I'm not a coffee geek, just a regular Folgers guy, but I drink a cup or two a day. Screw that. I'm ordering BRC from now on.

    • @bluescanfly1981
      @bluescanfly1981 4 года назад +2

      Thanks for bringing these up. My best buddy is an Army vet 2 tours to Iraq and I know he misses the straight shooters, telling it exactly like it is. I guess once you have that, you just can't stomach BS very well.
      Stuff like corporate office politics and gossip and other sh*t is really totally meaningless - once you've been out there literally making life and death decisions. Also, few civilian managers can manage at all, and the rest really dislike a dude who sees through their antics. In lower level management it's mostly all about 'me' and not the mission. Most of the dudes 'in charge' don't even know what the mission is.
      I'll tell you what I am telling him - society, media etc say that it's the vets who have trouble fitting back into society the way I see it is you guys who deserve a better society to be a part of when you come back - we can learn so much from you, just be patient with yourself and with us. The 22 a day is really devastating - people went through hell, came back and felt like they weren't good enough for us, when all the while it is us who aren't good enough, appreciative enough, respectful enough or committed enough - even though it costs us nothing. Thank you, and hope to get you a cup of coffee some day (even if it's Folgers, though damn, have some standards soldier!) Hooah

      @@bluescanfly1981 it's kind of you to say all that much less respond at all. I hope you have a blessed situation with your life, where you work and with whom you work.
      I'd really like to find a former military vet to partner up with in what I do. Finding someone with a great sense of humor who's also committed to high quality regardless of the circumstances and without whining seems like it's asking far too much. Finding someone who understands and implements military grade attention to detail, timeliness and simply just keeping their word on a principled basis doesn't seem to exist outside the military. I know this can't be true, that there have to be great men from all walks of life who honor every profession, it's just they're damn hard to find outside the military and outside the combat arms in particular.
      Whoever you are, please believe me when I tell you this: war is coming to our nation. There are a few different ways in which it can start and/or play out, but it's imminent one way or another. Regardless who's elected in 2020 I don't think our nation will survive peacefully much beyond then. I'm preparing for it physically (running, working out and basically getting back in fighting shape). mentally, as well as acquisitionally (i.e. weapons, armor, gear, supplies, water / food storage, etc.). If you aren't doing the same things already, I suggest you do so for the sake and safety of you and yours.
      Take care friend.

On the war crimes, there are actually way more reports of war crimes than those two. There are reports that team guys - used hatchets to chop up combatants, and other things that are more speculative. However, despite the innocence before guilty thing, I believe where there is smoke there is fire. While not an operator, I am combat veteran. I have seen how stress, machoism, group think, and host of other things play on people. I have seen some borderline shit but do you think that gets reported?
