Mr. OLIVER, I'm here to tell you that I am 72yo female standing just under 5 foot tall. I had to watch your video several times then watched it as I went thru the steps. I did it! Having those seats gone is going to make my van build do much more better for me. Thank you so much for posting this. P.S. the 2010 seats are the same as the 2009.
I used this video in 2016 to take my 3rd row seat out and now after 6.5 years of using the van for vanlifing I am using the same video to restore it back to original. I wish more RUclips “how to’s” were this clear and specific. Thank you!
This is so helpful! I went out today and got it done following your steps. I didn't have a breaker bar so I sat on the floor with my back against the second row seat and put my foot on the screwdriver holding the spring in place. That worked out really well. I also used my foot to push on the wrench to break loose the bolts.
This video is very helpful and done very well. We did this for my daughter's Odyssey for their 2-week vacation trip around the west so they had plenty of room for luggage, etc. We just re-installed it basically doing the steps in reverse. Before reinstalling, I decided it would be easier to wrangle the seat springs with that center part already attached, so we installed the three bolts that face to the rear first. That kept everything still while we wrestled the seat springs back into position. Incidently, those are the last three bolts I removed when we took the seat out and I recommend that one change in the steps for any that remove or reinstall these in the future. Thanks.
I actually got my seats out today using this video. I needed to use your pipe extension trick to break the bolts loose. I’m a 66 year old woman with arthritis. Thanks for your help.
I just did the project yesterday. I would not have thought it possible until I saw this video. I worked alone, it took me one hour and five minutes start to finish. I think with a second strong person, it would have gone more quickly, because, alone, I had to improvise some wood ramps and use a prybar to position things exactly. Overpaid a little for the junk yard replacement seats @ $450 delivered, but I now have a working third row seat again. I am extremely grateful to you
Thank you for posting this video. Today we removed the rear seats, following your instructions, without any trouble. Now we can move forward with our mini camper build
Outstanding video. One of the best I’ve ever seen and I’ve seen a lot. Most people try to make long speeches and Steven Spielberg movies. Right down to the arrows demonstrating pull direction, spring back and appropriate cautions without treating the viewer as an idiot. Outstanding work.
Thank you, Mr. Olivier, for the detailed video. Removing these seats without proper knowledge is very dangerous due to high tension springs at two ends. Video clearly explains this. I just removed van's rear seat.
Dude you are AMAZING…. This is the most valuable video on RUclips Great Thanks to you for safety advice my husband followed your steps to a T and came out successfully with all fingers intact… 🙏🙏🙏
Great info and a very well done tutorial. I'm currently debating about getting an Odyssey and DON'T need all the seats. In fact don't WANT them as I would like to remove the weight when I tow my motorcycle. Thanks for this. A good model for other tutorialists!
I cannot thank you enough for this video. It saved me a ton of money!! I had to replace this seat in my van ( dog ate a huge chunk ), and this video was spot on as to exactly what i needed to do. The seat ' bench was very heavy just as you had stated. But careful following of your instructions made this entire process a snap. I purchased a replacement seat from a local salvage yard ( tan leather ) for $100. I had the old seat out, and the new one installed in under an hour! again, i cannot thank you enough for this detailed video. keep up the excellent work!!
awesome glad you were successful and safe! I removed a rear coil spring a few months ago using two crow bars - not a good idea... but I still have both eyes - barely! Later, I did figure out the safer and easier method.
Thank you so much. Best tutorial ever. Followed it just as you said and was very easy. Thank you for the warnings, those springs were serious. To answer the question, I do not believe you can remove just one side.
Thank you SO SO very much. I was able to prepare my seats for removal because of you. They’re too heavy for me to lift, but at least the tedious part is done. Maybe someone at a junkyard will lift them out of the well.
I have a 2009 Honda Odyssey there just got that I'm going to convert over for a camper van. I found your seat removal to be quite helpful thank you. But I do need to figure out how to remove the hangers that the hinged on.
Great tutorial Conrad... I had not considered the springs... you may have just saved me a few fingers... Thanks you!!! I too am planning on tricking out my Odyssey as a "base camping" vehicle for back country adventure. I'm viewing it as more of a hard-shelled tent to operate out of. But many of these videos I'm seeing also suggest that it might be enjoyable to "dial it up" with some extra amenities such as a porta-potty, an electric cooler, camp-stove and so on to enhance the enjoyment of the trip on the way to the back-country. Curious about accessing the spare tire since it looks like you may have the tire boxed in on your other video? Thanks again! PB
Indeed, I have not tested to see if I can remove the spare tire or not (w/o removing a section of the rear box). I always carry the impact drill with the appropriate torx driver just in case I need to disassemble part of it!
@@ConradOlivier we removed the spare tire to make room for more shelves, in our 2010 Odyssey. We will carry spare in the rear seat well until we get a rooftop carrier. Every inch is valuable space in a mini camper.
It's too bad that Honda didn't make these easier to remove. I mean... I don't think it would have been difficult to design it where the seats were removeable once lowered into the trunk. Not a fan of this design.
Can just the larger section of the back seat be removed? I already have mine set up for camping similar to yours but leave the small seat up and stow the large section, I would like to just take that section out.
Hi. I have a 2005 Honda Odyssey that the 3rd row driver side seat is stuck in the upright position. I can get the passenger side to stow but the driver side won't disengage from the floor. Any recommendations on how to get the seat to stow? TY
+Nick Pittson I did get most of the structure completed and used it to take a rest in while on a 1000 mile trip. I'll work on a video of it as soon as winter finishes up around here and I can give my input and tips. I ended up building the sleeping platform a bit high to allow for large amounts of storage below which does make it a bit tight to get into - I'm 5'9", but it's a tradeoff I'm glad to have made as I also use the van to carry tools and equipment when I'm not taking a road trip. Thanks for subscribing and inquiring!
Anyone know if 2023 rear seats are the same way for complete removal and reinstalling? I’m about to go check on property that’s badly damaged that I was supposed to move toto prior to the damage, lost my job due to being disabled no disability granted, so no funds to pay over $1k in gas but calculating removing 2nd and 3rd row completely- I’d be able to go round trip on half the fuel cost due to way less weight by increasing the mpgs which I’m really hoping for. Thank you for any 2023 Honda Odyssey Sport
you mention at the end about a modular camper van conversation - did you make that video? I'm about to start converting mine and want to make it modular too, so any advice would be appreciated. where are you located? I'm near Denver
I have completed what I had drawn out. (no video yet) I just used the camper section for a 5 day road trip and it was fine. The measurements I went with favor daily work usage over camping comfort - hence it's a bit tight to get into a sleeping position, but not terrible. The most useful design part for has been the removable section (middle seat area). If I were making a van conversion to try to dwell it I would make the platform lower or split on one side - in the end, this is a very small space no matter how you slice it. Also Denver. For dedicated 'camper' usage, I'd suggest something more like this: ruclips.net/video/_tA3ldfRUN0/видео.html
I have some ideas, if you want we could meet and chat about it. my goal is to find a solution that would make it easy to switch from camper to daily use (4 seats) and of course all mods to be reversible if I will need to sell it.
Hi Conrad, Our 2005 is a luxury model with a power switch to raise the seat out from its place above the spare wheel. Is the action to remove just the same please.
is this the only year or make you can do this on? Just watched a video on how to get the 2nd row out. I would love to take this out in my '04 so I can haul all my DJ equipment! Great vid nevertheless!
Thanks for your comment. I removed mine shortly after posting my original comment and realized that, yes, the seat could be reinstalled. That's what I meant. It wasn't until I saw the tension mechanism for myself that I understood how it worked. That was a great tip to use two screw drivers. I've since built a flat platform with a hatch to access the space where the third row once was.
@@paoloaranoff4708 I have pictures to share. It doesn't look like I can post them in a reply here so I will try to make a video that shows off my design. In the meantime, if you leave your email address I can send them to you.
Does anyone know of a video where the 3rd seat row is removed from a 4th gen honda odyssey? Mine is a 2013 and is different from the one in this video.. thanks
Hi Ashley, it may be possible with some cutting of fabric and possibly metal parts (not sure on that one). If I recall correctly, the center hinge is connected to both sides so something might need to be cut in order to free it up - just going on fuzzy memory though).
Bryce Palmer you probably already found your answer, but I responded to the other comment saying that if you really wanted to remove only one seat you would have to cut the central hinge support in two pieces. Likely not an ideal solution.
Conrad Olivier Thanks for your tutorial. It made removing the rear seat quick and easy. In my 2009 I was actually able to remove just one side of the rear seat. First you need to take off the sheet metal bracket that holds the plastic covers over the central hinge. Then it required removing a screw with a hex head that goes through both sides of the central hinge on the top side. Then you can pull the two sides apart. There is another pin that is not visible in the lower portion of the central hinge so you need to pull the two sides apart as straight as you can. I was actually able to remove the larger portion of the rear seat without uninstalling the smaller side. I doubt you could remove the smaller side as easily because of the hidden pin.
Bryce Palmer very good to know - thanks for the details on that! I'm currently working on a DIY roof rack setup for a solar panel since my van didn't have a roof rack.
Thank you +Bryce Palmer, this has become important to me again for this weekend, but I would need to remove the smaller seat. I might have to remove both and then put back the larger one, but I'll give it a go!

It was the only complete instruction that I found to remove the seats from my 07 Odyssey.
FYI, in case you want to put the seats back: bolts with 10 printed on it are the 5 center bolts and bolts 12 are the 4 hing bolts.
Are they hard to install back? Or just place back in and tighten bolts?
