    • @danielhomant2832
      @danielhomant2832 12 дней назад +9

      Split scabbard.
      Split the top side of the scabbard along only enough length for the blade to clear. Can't be easily seen and allows it to be carried on your back and properly drawn/sheathed with one hand.
      For extra security, put a few magnets at the top of the sheathe with complimentary ones in the cross guard. This will allow you to move with a fair amount of vigour and not have the sword come loose, but not so strong that it will prevent a draw.
      Form and function.

    • @Acylenn
      @Acylenn 12 дней назад +8

      i remember shadiversity making a scabbard specifically for back draw; it was split at the top so you can tilt the tip of the sword out when you draw, but his also had a guide boars of sorts at the top so you could also get the sword back in blindly, iirc

  • @metanightmare4454
    @metanightmare4454 14 дней назад +1972

    Wearing a sword on your back was actually very rare historically. There are ways to do it, though. The best one I remember seeing was on a some medieval LARPing channel a few years ago, where they made a back scabbard with a slit on the side near the opening. It was too thin a gap for the thicker base of the blade near the hilt to slip through, ensuring that the sword was still secure when sheathed, but the thinner part near the tip could slide right through the space, making easier to unsheathe. They even added sort of a little built-in backboard to help guide the tip into the gap when putting the sword away.

      @andrewblock5339 12 дней назад +3

      No it wouldn't, your arm from the rear of your bicep to your palm is not longer than the majority of sword blades. Making it further down would not at all solve this issue because you would not be able to reach over your back far enough to make a difference.
      Even if you place the blade over your opposite shoulder and completely throw yourself off balance it wouldn't work because if the scabbard is rigid and unmoving on your back you won't be able to pull it out through the wood and if it is designed to rotate and move on your back that rotation will make it so that the effective distance the blade moves within the scabbard is less.
      You would either have to make a scabbard with some sort of cut in it that allows the blade to be rotated within the scabbard without having to pull the entirety of the blade from the scabbard.

    • @andrewblock5339
      @andrewblock5339 12 дней назад

      @@gipsymelody1268If the scabbard rotates that means it is moving with the blade. If I pull the sword and it rotates such that the opening has shifted then the new point I'm drawing from is that point. @ForeverDegenerate 14 дней назад +3

      @@JRiley187 The general rule of thumb is if your sword is longer than your arm, then it is physically impossible to back-draw it from a standard scabbard. Now, depending on how much longer the sword is than your arm, it IS possible to back-draw some swords that are longer than your arm if you bend over and draw them over your shoulder instead of straight up. But it's not recommended as it is highly impractical and most swords you would want to do this with are still too long even for this draw method.
      There's a reason Aragorn from Lord of The Rings kept Anduril's Scabbard attached to his horse's saddle. In that movie, you never saw Viggo with that sword on his back because it was too friggin' long. It was always either sheathed under the saddle or in his hand.
      From what I understand, swords were sheathed on the back, primarily, for traveling. Especially long-distance travelling. However, if there was a good chance that the swordsman was going to need his sword for defense, even travelling, it would either be worn on the hip or, like Aragorn, attached under the saddle of their horse.
      However, for populated traversal, as in through a town, you would do an Aragorn and either keep it stowed under your saddle or firmly in your hand. Why? Just because you can't draw your sword from your back doesn't someone else can't. The positioning of the sword on the back makes it relatively easy for someone to just walk up behind you and steal your sword if your scabbard doesn't have a locking mechanism to keep the sword in the scabbard which, let's be honest, most scabbards don't.
