No woman had ever sung like that with such power, passion, and heart.
Unfortunately she died before completing this album. She was scheduled to lay down the vocals on a song but never showed up at the studio. They found her dead in her hotel room. The track she was supposed to sing on is an instrumental on the album.
wow!so glad you picked this song.. you are spot on in your critique ..NOBODY sounds like Janis....period..because nobody has lived Janis's pain, heartache but Janis...her voice is her SOUL singing....like Mahalia Jackson sang to the lord when she sang and that's what made Mahalia's performances so compelling ...BTW, "little girl blue" by Janis is a good one too...
I agree too. There are some artists who are meant to be seen as well as heard. Janis and Joe Cocker are two of them. Speaking of which, I don't think we've seen Joe on here yet.
Janis was amazing. Janis Joplin was raised in South Texas but spent her time in South Louisiana in the blues club. Janis like Hank Williams and The Carter Family were great friends with the local people, the African American people. Talent is said to distributed equally, and that is true but the great soul of Blues music was born in Virginia, Mississippi, Kentucky, and Tennessee. Carter Family admitted buy over 100 songs from many different people who lived the hills. I love the soulful Blues and Janis Joplin. She is proof if you are brilliant, a person can learn to do anything. She inspired great singers like Stevie Ray Vaughn in his vocals. Her life ended in a horrible way. Drug abuse is a horrible killer and it is tough to be charged to care for a person with Janis’s drug problems. Great Video! I have watched many of them
Janis Joplin was truly a one - of - a -kind singer! I remember hearing her as a thirteen year old , I couldn't believe her voice! I'm still blown away today! God Bless you Janis!!R.I.P.
JJ was my favorite. I remember watching her on TV singing with all the bigs of the day (Mamas & Papas, Jimi Hendrix, Country Joe, CCR, Paul Butterfield, Blood Sweat & Tears, Canned Heat, Joe Cocker, Crosby Still & Nash just to name a few) and she always put every bit of herself into each song. She was an original and though some may sound like her, they will never be her.
I had the pleasure of seeing one of her last concerts. It was the summer of 1970 in Seattle Wa. She sang at an outdoor baseball park. Sold out. Smoked a joint about 6 rows back from center field stage. She had soul when she sang. She died Oct 1970.
She's truly one of the greatest and most memorable female singers. No one can truly do a 1:1 of her voice, but there are some singers I'd put in a similar ballpark as her, like Beth Hart (Give LA Song a listen to), she has a similar very raw/personal style to her singing that Janis did.

The voice Alisan Porter-Blue Bayou, she played the child actress in the movie "Curly Sue" also Bria Kelly-steamroller Blues. These are the two top female voices I've ever had the pleasure to listen to.
Janis transitioned from folk to blues and rock while she was living in Austin, Texas during the Sixties as part of the psychedelic movement that was developing there. During that time, there was a lot of mingling between the new folk / rock and traditional southern black blues; they were playing at the same clubs. Janis's style was shaped a lot by Big Mama Thornton. It's really clear if you listen to Big Mama doing Ball and Chain and then listen to Janis doing the same song.
This song was written for a man she loved, they were together for awhile and he left to go find himself, the day she died there was a note from him at the front desk, saying he was ready to get back together again 💔
Yes, I saw an interview with her one true love but nothing was said about this song being about him.. He was totally heartbroken. The only time she was sober was with him. He truly loved her and wanted to spend the rest of his life with her and he was mere hours too late. Janis definitely lived the blues growing up in Texas being bullied by her classmates. So many great blues artists come from Texas - SRV, janis, johnny winter, zz top, freddy king, albert collins, johnny copeland, etc...
@@susana5052 i believe it was a 2 hour PBS documentary of her life that i saw a couple of years ago. It was magnificent. i remember classmates voted her ugliest man on campus. This man came into her life that didn't know who she was at the height of her success and they instantly fell in love. Obviously she was on drugs really badly and he helped her get sober. She started dabbing into drugs again and he didn't like it and went to find himself. When he realized how much he truly loved her he sent a message to the front desk I believe at midnight. So as I watch your videos and a few others, it makes me happy that your discovering it and keeping it alive. There's so much more, we had our problems too, but the fifties and sixties were special and I miss that time. Im enjoying your reactions to our music,,,,,thank you😘
Janis Joplin is one of my musical idols. I wish I would have the opportunity to see her live but I was only 5 when she died. Her and Patsy Cline who died before I was born are singers I wish I could have seen live. I will forever love them both and no one will ever replace either of them in the music industry.
Hear it, feel it, love it...Janice felt every note, every word. Like Beth Hart, they both got it in their souls, old souls that know what the blues really are....
There was nobody like Janis Joplin. It is sad s my he had to die so young and from my home state also................I'm still proud of her voice and still listen to her music!!
Another great reaction video, ☺ You really should watch Janis in her live videos, it is not so much the sounding like, but the reason for me thinking Courtney was so much like her is the way the music just takes hold of them, and their bodies seem to take on a mind of their own and the way their voices just belt out the lyrics in such an intense soulful way, kind of a wild abandon sort of thing, but that is just my opinion, ☺😀☺
An artist with more talent than she could contain, who burned out and was lost too early. She was unique. Others have already suggested "Me and Bobby McGhee" and "Piece of My Heart." Janis Joplin was amazing.
“Piece of My Heart,” with Big Brother & the Holding Company is her signature song. She came from east Texas & always said that her primary influence was the blues of Bessie Smith.
There are only two female singers that came close to Janis Joplin back in those days -- Candy Givens of Zephyr (Sail On) with Tommy Bolin on lead guitar, and Ten Wheel Drive's Genya Ravan (Morning Much Better). Tracy Nelson of Mother Earth came close sometimes (I Need Your Love So Bad). I love all these women.
This was her first and only solo album. She was singer for Big Brother And The Holding Company. Ty, this is one of those singers that you really need to explore. Ball and chain, me and Bobby mcgee, and Mercedes Benz.
I agree! The very first song that Courtney had when sang was the closest to sounding like Janis Joplin on America's Got Talent. After that I think she needed some more vocal lessons because she didn't know what what notes to sing wear on some of the songs. Janis Joplin just seem to know where to sing and when to sing. It's amazing the childhood that Janis Joplin went through. Even after going back to her hometown and not being cared about after she got famous. She was buried alive at one point and survive that too. She died before she was even 30 years old. I think she was 27 when she died.
Overdosed on heroin at the age of 27. One of the best ever. She gave every performance everything she had. Emotion totally spent. If you felt nothing when she was done it only confirmed that you were dead. She could rip the soul out of your mind with just one phrase.
Everything that Janis was is in that voice. The loneliness the outcast young lady who spent her youth being bullied and degraded. It broke my heart when she died and so young. So many I have listened to or attended their concerts died too young
Janis was one of the most exciting and electric performers in the history of music. THat woman put every bit of her soul and her heart in each song she sang...live she would strangle each song, caress it, whisper it, scream it, love it...She could harmonize with herself with her 4 octave voice. Janis was no dummy..she had a genius IQ and was an amazing painter as well. Her artwork is incredible. The whole myth about Janis being miserable all the time is bogus..She knew what she was doing..she new the odds... She had a blast and went out on top...
There is and forever will be just one Janis Joplin..She was unique, and remember this is a raw recording before digital processing, Voice auto tune and even editing. What you hear is even better when she performed live. One of the greats that died way too young.
On Janis’s last album “Pearl” there was one song she didn’t sing because she died. The instrumentals were on the album without her singing, it was called “Buried Alive in the Blues”
Met Janis in 69 in the park in the Haight she wasn't the most beautiful but most real lady I had met sang with passion and soul ... Truly a lady who would rock your world
and 10 years after her birth, I was born, same place Port Arthur, Texas, same hospital....I grew up not knowing that until the internet....I always loved her more than any other female artist when I was growing up....
All good suggestions, but there is nothing like her live performance at the Monterey festival singing, Ball and Chain. It's just one of the greatest performances I have ever seen.
There is only one Janis Joplin. Thank you Ty, when Courtney sang and everyone said oh she sounds like Janis Joplin, I was like no way. She was 27 when she passed, there is no way a 13 yr.old kid is going to sound like a grown woman. Watch some of her live performances, you can really see the emotion and soul she put in her music. The person that sounds closest to Janis Joplin is Karise Eden. She was on the Voice Australia. You should listen to her full blind audition with judges comments. She sang It's a Man's World. One of the judges compared her to Janis Joplin.

You really should watch Janis in her live videos, it is not so much the sounding like, but the reason for me thinking Courtney was so much like her is the way the music just takes hold of them, and their bodies seem to take on a mind of their own and the way their voices just belt out the lyrics in such an intense soulful way, kind of a wild abandon sort of thing, but that is just my opinion, ☺😀☺
My lady!! The one and only!! The Best!
Ah, an oldie but goodie. Loved Janis!
"Piece of My Heart" and "Me and Bobby McGhee"...Janis was incredible!!! She died way too soon. A
beauiful, but tortured soul!
I love Janis Joplin. She brings back major memories from high school and college!
Janis poured out her heart and soul into her songs and was always exhausted after singing. Pure passion
The Pearl is one of the best. The way she combines blues and rock and roll are incomparable to no other.
Watching her perform is 10 times better than just listening. Her whole body sings the song.
Bobby McGee

You just got a new subscriber. Thank you for appreciating Janis! ♥ Lifetime fan here. Bless you too. ~Stacy
Mercedes Benz is my favorite Janis song..
Beverly Astorga mine too 😊
i used to sing that to my daughter as a lullaby
Her painted Porsche sold for $1.6 million......she wanted a Mercedes real bad.
My favorite Janis song as well!
On Janis’s last album “Pearl” there was one song she didn’t sing because she died. The instrumentals were on the album without her singing, it was called “Buried Alive in the Blues”
I love Janis! I can’t really add anything more to what everyone else has already said. She was unique and amazing! Gone way too soon.
Met Janis in 69 in the park in the Haight she wasn't the most beautiful but most real lady I had met sang with passion and soul ... Truly a lady who would rock your world
Janis 1st appearance ever was at Monterey Pop festival singing Ball and Chain. Even Mama Cass was like omg.
Renaissance Man, you may like Janis Joplin's "Me and Bibby McGee" written by Chris Kristofferson...
Nothing but pure Southern Comfort flowing from her voice.
R.I.P. JANUS JOPLIN
May peace be with you now. ✌
I love Janis singing, "Me and Bobby Mcgee" Her feelings come out in that song as well.
This entire album is just a banger love it! I think I loved her from in the whomb because my mom just loves her and listens to her on a daily!
No other human being ever sang like Janis Joplin. She was one of a kind.
and 10 years after her birth, I was born, same place Port Arthur, Texas, same hospital....I grew up not knowing that until the internet....I always loved her more than any other female artist when I was growing up....
Janis Joplin performing Summertime and piece of my heart is 🔥
Little girl blue, move over, work me lord and a woman left lonely are good songs from her that haven't been recommended yet.
Absolutely love Janis Joplin best song is ball and chain.the live version is amazing
All good suggestions, but there is nothing like her live performance at the Monterey festival singing, Ball and Chain. It's just one of the greatest performances I have ever seen.
She is my heart song ❤️❤️ she's one of a kind, not one person on the planet can come close, Bobbie McGee has been my favorite for years!
She also performed at Woodstock 69...a 3 days concert
THE FIRST SONG I EVER HEARD FROM HER WAS "ME AND BOBBIE MCGEE".....I HAD A TRANSISTER RADIO! YES I WAS A CHILD!
She has been gone 48 yrs. I blasted her music, such a big fan. Please do T. Graham Brown , Wine Into Water. Live version. Blessings🙏
Thanks for posting Janis. She IS the REAL deal, a one off. What a tragic loss.
Been a big fan of hers since she was alive. I'm not sure how you feel about someone posting some suggested links here but here some other Janis tunes that you might like in your free time.

There's a ton more great stuff but I'll stop there but I hope you can check the links out. All Janis ever wanted was a little love..
My two, all-time favourite Janis Joplin songs: "Little Girl Blue," and "I Need A Man To Love." And if you want to hear pure Janis (all voice, no instrumental backing), listen to "Mercedes Benz."
Thank you...people always say that female singers with a "husky" voice sounds like Janis Joplin. Hell NO!!!....Janis is her own self.
Originhally recorded by Garnett Mims and the Enchanters.
The person that sounds closest to Janis Joplin is Karise Eden. She was on the Voice Australia. You should listen to her full blind audition with judges comments. She sang It's a Man's World. One of the judges compared her to Janis Joplin.
Thank You! Great Reaction. You are correct Janis IS Janis no one else has her sound and charm. As far as other Janis songs I agree with all of the comments below, but I will suggest Ball and Chain Live at the Monterrey Pop Festival, Summertime and Oh Lord Won't You Buy Me a Mercedes Benz.
Me and Bobby McGhee. That's the song I remember hearing on the radio, back when I was a kid.
Janis Joplin is my all time fave female singer. You GOTTA hear her do 'Summertime,' which I consider her very best on an album. She didn't live long enough for me to see her live, so I can't vouche for a live version. I sure hope you and other Joplin fans will come across 'Summertime.'
The delicate parts remind me of Etta James. Do “Summertime”!
I love JANIS omg that strong voice guys make me so emotional y she left like this she was such a awesome talented and a queen of souls
Keep in mind this is just a cover of the original by "Garnet Mimms".... same arrangement and all . It was a pleasant surprise that many years later. Janis covered it

Janice was a very special person her music was great. What a wonderful and sad story. Watch the interviews she did with Dick Cavett she was a very personable and beautiful person.
He had some of the best interviews in the 70's!!
That was wonderful to hear.
