Today's video is a reaction and analysis of Sober by the band Tool. This song was a layered and raw and an incredible take on a more serious topic that we should most likely talk more about - addiction. It's a heavy one so dive in knowing that.

Always the internal conflict
Most would choose 2...addiction ruins everything in your life and the people around you
He's singing as the addict in the first verse. Body language is begging and the vocals are begging "why can't we just be sober". In the second verse he's singing as the addiction that's afflicting and destroying him. The vocals are much more aggressive, "i will find a center in you, i will chew it up and leave", "i will elevate you just enough to bring you down", "why can't we NOT be sober (wanting to be inebriated). In the third verse.. he's singing as both.. same words with different meanings, "I want what i want" the addiction wanting to chew up the person more, and the addict wanting more poison. Both wanting for each other. One begging for reprieve, the other celebrating the destruction of a person. Powerful. The body language is amazing. Unbelievable song and performance.
Even deeper still is that, if you have been or know an addict, when he's singing as the addiction, he's also singing as the addict. An addict can have the same effect as the addiction on their family and friends, they're dysfunction eats away at those relationships in the same way. The entire song's lyrics can be applied to all three perspectives, truly brilliant writing.

That's what the drugs do for you, you get what you want and you try to move forward and then it takes you back down.
It's such misery to live like that I can tell you.

Even his wardrobe fits. the unbuttoned pink onesie draws attention, but not in the "wow he's so cool" way, more of a "what the fuck is wrong with that guy?" which is exactly what he wants from the audience.
I have a lady friend that would love that onesie, and look awesome in it.

This is one of my favorite examples of how Maynard can seem completely unhinged yet is actually being the conductor of a multitude of layers of music and emotion.

As a nurse who works with addicts, I can tell you, he's got his act together.
He either has seen them often, or has been one.
You don't write herion music without living it first.
Iirc he was on either heroin or pills for a time. He has a few songs about addiction
I can tell you from personal experience, Ive been sober now for 14 years after being in a relapse that lasted about 10 years, after being sober for 12 years, how vicious of a cycle it is. I credit the education I got while in rehab when I was 17, the years in NA/AA, and for the public speaking I voluntarily did for where I was outpatiented after rehab, I did public speaking to mostly high schools in the area, all except my own, its been 36 years and I can still remember the names of the substance abuse therapists who helped me.

FWIW addicts often go into rehab programs but end up where they came from. It isn't easy to cut 99% of your former circle of friends loose because they are involved with drugs. So while rehab might be successful it's often the social problems afterwards that pulls people back into unhealthy circles and restart their addiction.

My bass teacher told me he saw tool in 94 ish in amsterdam NL, and told me he got scared of mjk making knife stabs with his microphone, and locked eye contact with him.

Read the lyrics from the perspective of the addiction itself. “I will find a center in you. I will chew it up and leave. I will work to elevate you just enough to bring you down.” Powerful.
A lot of people think this is just the perspective of the addict but it's a conversation between the addict and the addiction. It's quite brilliant.
These are my favourite lyrics in the whole song
I see it more like an addict tired of fighting, ashamed by all the damage his addiction has done. While he cries out for some divine help because he is buckling under the weight of his addiction, and the path of destruction it leaves behind him. While warning his loved ones to not not get to close, because he can't help the damage it is causing them.
When you learn that his mother suffered from a. stroke at 30 and lived another 30 years as an invalid suffering with limited motion, you can understand Maynard a little better. But his talent is a total Gift. Also the fact he writes the lyrics after the band comes up with the music is what makes it so much Magic.

This right here, is why I love the internet. I will never be able to experience certain things (Tool) for the first time again. Yet, I can experience others first time experiencing Tool. Magic my friends, it does exist.
The exact reason I watch people react to my favorite music. Love it.

I think he IS the addiction in this performance. His whole body and voice along with the music simply scream that he is the monster and doesn't know how to be anything else. He embodies it so powerfully, with his whole self. Amazing, jaw dropping and even seeing a snippet of it brings tears to my eyes. So raw yet meaningful. Kudos to the band and Maynard's ability to bring this monster to life and still have a functioning brain. :)

This song makes my eyes water every time. Been a high functioning closet addict for nearly 2 decades mainly on but occasionally off. The irony that when ppl saw me sober said I looked high & when I really was high they said I looked clear headed & sober is not lost on me. Put me in a state where I question if it's even worth being sober. Currently off my main vice but it is the constant demon whispering from my shoulder.

I understand exactly what you mean. I've suffered from alienation issues since I was a teenager, and physical pain since the mid 80"s. I'm now 63 and still not sure where I belong.

He is translating the visceral experience of being mentally ill for people that have never been there. And he's doing it really well.
It's about drug use and being an addict actually. Hence the title "sober." But being deeply addicted to drugs is essentially the same feeling. So even if you've never been an addict but struggled with mental illness the lyrics resonate.

@@justaname2422 Yes. And no. The effects are definable as mental illness. And how they break down the systems over time is necessarily in that realm. And yet additional distinguishing is warranted since the cause is an external chemical dependency. Which is pretty firmly difficult to address without the expertise of doctors who are experts outside of just psychiatry, psychology, and into general medicine. You need to understand the mechanism of the addiction on the whole system because dependency like that is based in the whole system.
A brief dive in into psychopathology would show you that a healthy person can NEVER understand what a mentally ill person feels. We may think that we can, but we can't. Reason is, mentally ill brain is broken and until we break ours in the same exact way - we won't be able to experience the effects. Just read some descriptions of what schizophrenics say or how they describe their condition, it's totally on the other level of logic.
Maynard is the type of person that will NEVER admit it but he is a musical genius.

Yep, that is so obviously true when you listen to the Joe Rogan podcast where he's the guest.
The song hits even harder in the context of the album, Undertow, because it comes right after Prison Sex. When you consider that the root causes of a lot of severe substance abuse issues is childhood trauma due to things like abuse and neglect, the thematic connection between those songs already gives the record a kind of narrative flow early on. This is reinforced by the overall unifying concept of the undertow pulling a person down against their will into absolute crushing depths and darkness or even their ultimate doom. So, as Sober picks up from where Prison Sex leaves off, it's already beginning on a grim footing, emotionally. And it is a very real progression that happens to people----too often---when the need to self-medicate as a result of untreated psychological trauma drives them into the further hell of addiction. Most people who become addicts don't become that way just from wanting to party and have fun on the weekends like other people who never develop an addiction. There's often something else driving the behavior in the first place, an underlying mental health issue that, unless it is treated, will make any attempt to address the substance abuse futile. Rest in peace to all my dead friends and big love to everyone who survived, I hope you gain something from each day that you live your life, even if it's as simple as a moment of gratitude. The sooner we realize the value of this gift of life, the better our lives will be. And I don't just mean for ourselves, but for ourselves too. Peace.

1st verse is the addict. 2nd verse is the drug. The 3rd verse is the reality of addiction, most people don't make it out. "I want what I want." Tool doesn't write happy endings.

Maynard is possibly the most expressive and connected to his lyrics of any singer. I've seen Tool 5 times, and it feels like a religious experience each time. They all are masters of what they do, every time.

I’m just here to give you full props, lady. I’ve watched at least ten reactions to this performance, and to date, you get it better than any other I’ve seen.
Maynard is just a genius. He goes into these trances when he performs. I’ve seen a show live where he laid in the fetal position for a while song. I’ve seen another live show that for the first 3 or 4 songs he didn’t even face the crowd. The guy is just wild.
After 7 years of being sober this song still brings tears to my eyes.
His body language and phrasing is a mirror of what the conflict of addiction does with ones soul. It rips, it hurts, it tears.

Maynard’s delivery of this song is just insane. I’m 3 years and 3 months sober and this song hits me really hard even though I’m not a huge Tool fan (sorry), but i really appreciate art when i see it. I have heard this song like a thousand times every time I’m feeling tired or down.

The way this song ends with the refrain "I want what I want" leaves the listener feeling absolutely hopeless. Amazing lyrics and performance.
The way he says "why" kills me every time. Its insane how someone moves and someone says a word can be that impactful.
It is a question of what one is addicted to and the reason one is addicted. What pain are we all trying to escape?
Listening to it on headphones through youtube is one thing. I then played it through my hi-fi system.
As an audiophile, I can confidently state that I've never heard any vocals quite like those at that part of the song. Even for Maynard. And I am a Tool fanatic.
Everything that Maynard does is calculated, planned, and executed with purpose. Every intonation choice, every note, and even the time signatures are strategically plotted.
He's on another level.

Maynard James is an amazing talent! His voice sucks you in to listen. First heard Tool when I was like 14. I'm 40 now and I still love them. He has such a unique voice and delivery.
After all these years i still get goosebumps when Adam hits that high distortion bend and Maynard kicks in with the last chorus. One of the best bands on multiple levels EVER

Tool is the greatest live band ever. Maynard his voice, his movements, body language , the music all make me feel emotionally physically, spiritually unstable , and I enjoy the ride.
The great thing is their last album which is still considered new has a song called Pneuma which rebuilds me emotionally, spiritually, mentally and physically.
I have been a tool fan since the very first album. and it is because of the lyrics, the sound, the live shows that I love this band. they are a break from reality and an immersion in to something else . it doesn't have to be dark. just different from everyday reality. and I get it from this band , especially live.
Or on a long car ride windows down, volume up and time to feel however tool makes you feel . and it is different every time.
some days it pumps me up, other days it makes me feel alive, other days it makes me think, other days it gets me thinking about burning down my house and moving to a secluded mountain for the rest of my life.
LMAO This is the great thing about tool. it meets you on your terms and just amplifies your emotions, thoughts and feelings.

I love this song because depending on what mood you’re in it can have a totally different vibe. If you’re feeling good, it’s an absolute head banger. If you’ve just hit rock bottom it’s something to cry your eyes out to. Either way, one of the best songs of all time.
Julia’s facial expressions .... immediately recognized as that of a musician/artist intent in the music.
The song is aparrently about a friend of the band's who was only ever at his artistic best when he was stoned out of his mind.
Regarding his stage persona... Maynard suffers from tremendous performance anxiety, and couldn't handle so many people having their eyes on him, and the only way to get through their early shows was to "shut his eyes off" and crawl inside his own head.
I saw Tool 3 times back in this era, once at a small club and Maynard never blinked once the entire time he was onstage. He wasn't actually seeing anybody.
There are many examples of Maynard performing entire concerts with his side band "A Perfect Circle" with his back to the audience.
To this day, this is why Maynard prefers to wear costumes onstage and stand at the back of the stage with minimal lighting on him.

The lyrics of this song were written during the 80's when Maynard was with his previous band and didn't even know any Tool member. People still keeping spreading this misinformation. I won't even comment on the hiding on stage thing because of the supposed "anxiety or stage fright"...

@@Qliphirot Personally I believe it is related to the song Opiate. Opiate was written based on the Karl Marx quote that "religion is the opiate of the masses", and this song is called "Sober", which I interpret as being "sober" of the "opiate", hence the references to Jesus and Mother Mary in the lyrics... Also the lyric "There's a shadow just behind me, shrouding every step I take" sounds like the feeling of God forever watching and judging you. The lyric "Trust in me and fall as well", sounds like it could be from the perspective of Jesus, meaning that religion doesn't really progress humanity. But hey, this is all just my personal interpretation.
I don't know where this performance anxiety myth started but I've only ever heard it mentioned in RUclips comments. I don't think it's a thing.
I've consumed my fair share of interviews, articles and even his book and from what I can put together, his behavior is more about not being a typical fame-mongering front man...maintaining a bit of anonymity

I saw them the first time at Lollapalloza in STL in 1992. Undertow hadn't come out yet but we had all heard Opiate and were excited to see them. They played their set (on the side stage) and we just could not believe it. That feeling has never gone away in almost 30 years now. Wow.
this song hits me everytime.. even when i was on drugs.. now i have been clean for 2 months and 11 days, tool gives me motivation! nice reaction :) keep them coming!

Hey bruh, fellow addict here.
Got a homie battling too, and we both use tool as "therapy- music" just because we love tool.
We've found out that tool's instrumentation, actually uses tribal music for their foundation in a way, as they use the same "layering" technique with each instrument to invoke a primal, "trancelike" state.
Tools music can change your immediate mindset, in a way.
So use to their music when you need to escape from addiction.
In AA they tell you to find a higher power i.e. God.
I believed in God before that, so didn't help me.
and I think that is the most asinine thing to tell people.
Atheists will say fuck that, and it's insulting to everyone's intelligence anyway, when their told you have to believe in a higher power, no exceptions.

So my interpretation of life, is, God gave me the power to do as I wish without his input for a reason, and I believe it's because we are strong enough, without grovelling to a theoretical mystical being people made up to feel safe.

Your reaction to this video was so genuine and raw. It was incredible to see your emotion uncomfort and immediate understanding of the music, the vocals and the artist. It's amazing what the art in music can do to people mentally. This is my first time finding your channel, but it definitely will not be my last time with one of your actions. Imagine being a hateful teen shortly after his father died and discovering a band that is an audible version of what you can't get out. Now, over 40, and this is still therapeutic.

This is my first video of yours I saw, and I love how you took the deeper look into why he is, and what he is feeling, and looking up the lyrics and inspecting the emotions behind the musicians to tie it all together. I loved this. Maynard is so cryptic literally all the time, that I don't know if its about his addiction, or everyone else's.
His live performances are fully immersive for every song he performs. He writes his own music so he IS connected to the expression of it even in the recordings

This song, man, hits me. I lost my daughter to drug addiction, overdose, and in the end, she lost her battle, her life.

@@matthewconner5545 Drug addiction is a disease, affecting all people, respects no biological differences in humans regardless of how we divide ourselves by color. Cares not if you're rich or poor. Uninterested in religion. It has been hard our marriage didn't survive the loss, so I try to speak to people about this plague or leaders have just plain ignored. Laws passed have done nothing to slow it down. I'm sorry Mathew you meant to console me and I've gone on a rant. Thank you for your kind words. Hold on to your son tightly and be watchful. You can trust your child but always verify what's really going on. I didn't. In this one area, I failed her.

TOOL is discomfort. Beautiful, glorious, comforting discomfort. It's so hard to explain to someone who will never get it, but those who do understand revel in the discomfort of all that is TOOL, wrapping themselves in its warmth. The challenge TOOL present is the reason we keep coming back for more. It's a bit like a musical version of Stockholm Syndrome and I can't get enough of it.
No other band on the planet is like TOOL.

I don't usually watch reaction videos, but for some reason I clicked this and it turned out to be a surprise. Your analysis of his posture and the song's meaning goes well beyond what I have come to expect with typical reaction vids. I will say this...if this is your first exposure to Tool, you have only just scratched the surface. Oh, and the "sober" part is not something I ever took literally. He's saying he doesn't want to go on in a reality with so much pain and anguish around him. Drinking is just a metaphor for escape. When I first heard the lyrics, I misheard them as "why can't we DREAM forever". And this put a different spin on the song for me. He's decrying a world where we cannot just follow some Dionysian whim without real and direct consequences. But when drinking/dreaming we are free of the chains.
I wish she would watch it through 1 time without commenting and then go into the analysis after
I always thought this song was about addiction to religion. Heard Maynard has some major issues with his mothers religious beliefs. The song Opiate equates religion to drugs.

The most beautiful thing is that the meaning, you as a listener SHOULD get out of it, isn't there, isn't in your face. Tool is definitely in the leagues with David Lynch and Brandon Sanderson for me personally, the meaning is the meaning you give it yourself, as a listener, in the stage of your life you're in .. it's all deeply intuitive. And the same song can have a different meaning years later. Timeless intuitive beauty :). A rare gift nowadays :).

Tool IS as much "Musical Theater" as it is a ""Musical Performance". It's one of the ways Maynard copes with his (almost) crippling stage fright. Also ALL the members of the band use their life experiences & that of their friends & family to form their music. Truly individually great performers that are MUCH Greater as a whole than just individual genius. I honestly have other bands that I have a deeper connection with, but they almost all have destroyed themselves in one way or another while Tool just keeps going & going & going. Massive props to a group of master performers that have been able to use music to SAVE themselves rather than just bare their scars to the world & let their demons drag themselves down into darkness.

I just found you tonight and after watching you react to the emotional roller coasters that are this song and Hurt plus Snuff. You get them. I don't know what your musical preferences are but seeing you come to tears and feel the emotion that is behind them proves what I have said and felt for decades. Heavy Metal music has everything and sometimes more than all other forms of music.

This is about the trap of addiction... and I’ve always felt specifically about heroine. They are masters of their instruments... please check out their catalog of songs.

It might seem like Maynard is out of control in this performance, but you can actually see, if you really pay attention, that many of his movements are made purposefully to keep time. Specifically that stomp near the beginning of the outtro, which I think you did pick up on. Great job! Subscribed!

So the thing I love about Tool is their songs are very multi faceted. On the surface the song appears to be about addiction and the mentality around addicts, but Maynard also has a very complicated history with his faith. That being said I've always seen it as a euphemism for religion. Being "drunk on the blood of Christ" and how the behaviors of religious zealousness can mimic that of an addict of any given substance. A lot of his lyrics are written in a very critical manner against the structure of religion, specifically the concept of the church, so it would make sense that this song serves as an analogy of sorts. I'd recommend checking out "Wings for Marie" and "10,000 Days (Wings pt 2)" as well, but listen to them back to back. It tells a story in one song, then flips the same story on its head a bit in the second song. It's a total ride from start to finish and more of a journey than a song. It's a full on experience. Before you do, Google the story behind it about his mother for context and I promise you'll leave those songs with full body goosebumps.

He uses his voice as an instrument and in any song you hear in the future of Tool he knows he has the best drummer, guitarist and base player and each is always showcased in each song while he sings in the background. He now always stands during performances to the side of Danny Carey the drummer. Agreed, their whole world is something that needs to be felt, it's complex, gritty, dark but so unique in the best possible way. Hearing their music since the 90`s. All his projects are a big part of my life.

The way he shows how it is harsh to overcome a bad habit which you've been enjoying or perhaps suffering is insane. After having been a metal head for 2 decades of my life, this performance makes me feel all of the experiences one may go through when they try to leave something. To me, it's not only about addiction. It's about leaving something that you do not want to leave although you're certain it is hurting you.
Fantastic video. Very seldom do you see someone react so viscerally to not only music, but performance like you did. You really felt it and that was wonderful to watch and experience with you. The line “trust in me and fall as well” always brings tears to my eyes. Brings me back to some dark places. This performance is one in a million.

Your analysis was very insightful. Maynard himself doesn't do drugs but he has addicted friends (as most of us do). This is performance for him but I agree, if it was ONLY performance, he couldn't have achieved this result. He couldn't just perform it, he had to FEEL it, to internalize it. To say it was "beautiful" doesn't seem right, but you understand.
He's such a huge fan of drinking wine he has own vineyard and wine making facility.

She forgot to comment about the most hint part of this song, the chorus part. Maynard was brainwashed with religion, that was his "addiction" he was trying to deal with.

The entire song is about a mutual friend they had who's creativity did not flourish until he was loaded up with substance.
It's no mystery, there's many videos and articles saying this. I know he went to a Catholic School and they indoctrinated like all schools do. Never any brainwashing.

4:30 Astute observation. Might I add, as a guitarist, regarding the 'unstable' bit: from a musical perspective it's also very interesting as when the guitar comes in, it starts with a normal chord voicing and then Adam Jones (the guitarist) literally bends the one note *INTO* dissonance, creating this anguished, tortured sound that, I would argue, is the main motif of the song. It very much plays off the song's themes of wanting something to just be fine and normal, but having something - or someone - just a little bit out of whack that keeps everything from falling perfectly into place. ( I know, I know - the pieces fit.)
I love how deep you get into analyzing the meaning behind these incredibly powerful, difficult songs instead of just going “ya bad posture.
