I really love this series! If possible I'd love to see future videos from you about some general design principles that I have observed in official models: load bearing, form locking, movement limiters, past-the-midline lock, etc.
Thank you so much! This is one of the topics I was truly eager for
You are the most welcome.
This is a great vid! I've used pendular suspension for years, but am trying some of the more advanced techniques in order to also have steering.
Thank you for this video. It is great
Very nice video! Suspension is the one thing i just cannot do. so this helped a lot.
Great video. Hope to see more for dummies series.
Thank you so much! I myself am trying to make a Defender MOC so this is really helpful
Glad to hear that.
Would love to see more stuff like that. Because of these videos I’ve created my first lego rc car. At first it was front wheel drive no turning. Now it has turning and is waiting for the large motor for real wheel drive. Still need to add suspension and stuff
Could not wait to introduce my children your vdo. (But they are smllie at the moment). Such a great great work.. Thank you for magnificent clip!
This is so helpful, thank you
Could you teach us about designing a vehicle from scratch?
Yes
also yes
Also also yes
also also yes yes
Also also also yes yes yes (lol also sounds wierd now )
In 42000, the suspension setup is known as pushrod suspension. It is found mostly in race cars and allows you to move the center of gravity of the car lower and inwards. Als well as that, there is a lot of playability for large travel and hard shocks or low travel and soft shocks. Another advantage of pushrod suspension is that it allows you to connect 2 double wishbone setups with one shock absorber (or even all 4). You can see this on F1 cars.
I really love your videos. They some of these are things that would take me hours to create. I was trying to figure out a way to make independent suspension with steering using the universal joint for axles. I actually made it work, but it doesn't as way too complicated too mount. The also made a teal shock absorber, but they are older sets.
As well as blue shock absorbers they are same as gray one
Can you teach us about desgining lego technic cars?
Fantastic vid
Jk I actually love this guy’s videos
lego technic has gotten really advanced since that last set i got so many new unique parts like that CV joint i wish i could afford that purple tracked vehicle you have in this video
Back in 2017 it was one of the best bargains on the market.
lol as soon as that part hit the floor and kept bouncing, all I could think was. “Oh man, it’s going under and to the back of something heavy”
Cheers for producing one of the most thorough videos I've seen yet on LEGO suspension. I've been wanting to up my vehicle game and will definitely be using this as gold reference material. Only issue will be how to compact it into standard-ish LEGO model size.
Maybe check some official Lego models with suspension
Been trying to the same, but lack of ball joints is an issue for me. I tried making I stadium truck, it was quite large, but I did not like how slow it it was. Maybe I can try again knowing this knowledge

@@grohl666 that's a really cool alternate build! Makes me want the defender set even more!
Could you make a convertible with the Lego Technic Corvette 42093? Thanks
i really need this for my mocs
Glad I could help
Don't wanna sound like a nerd but the Swing Axle Suspension is also called McPherson Suspension.
Nerds are always welcome here.
i was originally searching for suspension models with a differential to use in my simple control + car
Great tutorial, do u think if it is possible to add the first sistem to a 3 wheeled bike?
why not?
hi grohl666 im a big fan
Could you do a video about walking robots like the NXT robot does?
I do not have nxt and walkers take quite some time to develop correctly.
Huuuge help for my mocs, keep up the good work!
Also: is torsion bars illegal?
In official models, yes.
I was like am I really watching it? I know how to build suspension right? And then at the start of the video I was like wait what red and yellow absorbers are equally hard are you kidding me? How didn't I know this? 🤣🤣🤣
Dont worry, I am still learning new stuff too.
Thamks very useful , I am terrible at suspension
The biggest wheels I have are 43.2 mm and am new to making suspension so I think it's going to be a bit tricky
The first ideas are much better with small wheels.
is there anyway to apply suspensions to the pullback engines?
There is always a way, Pullback motor is nothing but a propulsion block. Place in the space where you have a differential or an electric motor.
will the pendular suspension work for a 4 wheeler semitruck/suv mix?
Not without additional shocks or one solid axle attached to the frame. You need something that will prevent the model from tilting sideways.
How can I get the parts to make the pendulum suspension
Any medium to big sized Technic set will do.
How can I make a dual rear driveable axle without a single spring (the rear pendular suspension but With two driveable axles)?
For a truck you mean? Just use a line of gearwheels in between the wheel attachments.
@@grohl666 I tried that but it got so unstable with only one connection to the frame. Can I stabilize it with something, like a 1x4 stick or something?
Good video mister
Thank you bro
Where could you recommend getting parts?
Buy a lego set with suspension or get separate parts from bricklink
Do you consider torsion bar using lego axle as illegal building technique ?
Yes 🙂
Makes sense, you are twisting an axle to use it as a spring
@@michaelfinlay1412 Yes, in elasticity domain without damaging the part, basically what engineer do in plastic clip assembly or torsion bar for instance.
the link in the description doesnt work :(
Thank you. Fixed it.
I have been trying to make 18 stud wide suspension with steering for so long now to go in my trophy truck but i just cant figure it out
I do not know how big your truck is or which wheels are you using, but these parts do help www.bricklink.com/v2/catalog/catalogitem.page?P=31794&idColor=86#T=C&C=86
@@grohl666 thanks
Can the first one carry a lot of weight?
Depends how well you lock the moving beams from the other side.
Which would you recommend for lego tractor trailers? I'm willing to use two different suspension types for front and rear.
Trucks usually use solid axles with leaf springs and air bags for which LEGO does not have a proper equivalent. Pendular solid axles with the rubber pieces to dampen their movement would work. Offroad ones have live axles.
@@grohl666 Great! Thank you!
I když nejsem začátečník, tak mě Dummies baví😅
What model number is that tracked car?
Give me the exact time in the video please.
FYI, it should not be referred to as a shock absorber. Shock absorbers do not provide any suspension support. They are actually struts which is a combination of shock absorption and suspension support via a spring.
Yes, but I did not choose the name of the part. www.bricklink.com/catalogList.asp?catType=P&catString=542
How is it ment to work with steering
Combine it with the Steering for dummies episode.
Hello! What type of suspension is a Hendrickson HMX 46K Rear Suspension and could you point me in the right direction for building one? Thanks!
images.app.goo.gl/9c9F9C7KDNk4NWiZ9 if you meant this, it looks like air dampered live axle/solid axle
@@grohl666 Here is the one I was referring too! hendrickson-intl.com/Truck/Vocational/HAULMAAX is there much difference between this one and the one you showed me?
@@brettthompson5192 Even better - this is just a pendular suspension arm with two rubber dampers on the sides - both these ideas are inthe video.
@@grohl666 Thank you very much!
How make rc suspension chasis but. I no have buwizz ,and Cv joints and Universal joints

I did a live axle with drivetrain.
Great. I did it many times too.
What is the difference between soft and hard springs
The stiffness of the spring.
@@grohl666 I mean which is better, sorry I kind of didn’t explain
@@taco6658 It depends on the application, size and the weight of the model. Usually softer for lighter/smaller models, harder for the bigger/heavier.
@@grohl666 thanks so I should use hard springs on my 2 pound tank.
@@taco6658 depends on the numbers of bogies as well
Where do you get the parts?
From lego sets or Bricklink
@@grohl666 so do you just take the set apart and just use the parts
@@mnlprixams9770 if I need them for MOCs then yes
Can you do moterizeation for dummies
Yes.
13:08 it looks like the room has turned into aluminum foil.
you forgot the 8465 suspension.
here is the rebrickable link for this set: rebrickable.com/sets/8465-1/extreme-off-roader/?inventory=1#parts
Should’ve shown off some MacPherson and multilink suspension :P
There is a 4 link in the stadium truck rear and the MacPherson is not that easy to replicate simply in LEGO format.
@@grohl666 In any case, I'd love to see you use more complex suspension systems in future sets, beyond the basic double wishbone and restricted live axles

I built a gokart out of his one build
You are confusing springs and shock absorbers
These parts are officially called "shock absorbers" at Lego
why do you sound like electroboom?
Why does he sound like me?
I hate this guy for not showing me how to make the last setup
You can just hate yourself for being too lazy to read. The link is in the description.
You don't know how the hell double wishbone suspension works. First if its so bad why do 99% of cars use it. Second double wishbone always has the shocks attached to the top swing arm. Third it is easy to have driven you just need CV joints. Please don't feed lies to people that aren't good with lwgo technical.
Thanks for your angry and honest comment. I believe I know what I am talking about. I did not say dual wishbone suspension is bad. Technic models often have shocks mounted at the bottom wishbone. At 12:30 you can see the CV joints mounted on the dual wishbone suspension. And it Is called Lego Technic.
@@grohl666 you implied that it was bad. Second just because Lego mounts them like that doesn't mean its right if you look at 90% of Lego technic its done wrong.
@@tristonius8557 You can try to become a LEGO Technic designer and make it better. I do that for living for almost 10 years.
