There was a Food history investigator hired by a food website years ago ( I forget the name) that tried to find out who really invented the French dip sandwich. Long story short, Cole's basically only had oral history passed down by employees, whereas Phillipe's had both oral and print history to back up their claim as the inventor. The term "French Dip" came from French fashion where French immigrant Phillipe Mathieu got the name.😉

We definitely noticed some places we have seen on television over the years and it was a really fun day😊 the weather in the UK is shocking at the moment, we were there recently and we had snow and flooding.
I used to get Pinks on Hollwood & Vine as a kid but it's not there anymore. I had some at a local mall a couple of years ago and it just wasn't the same.
What a delightful day- this was a really fun historic tour. I heard Andrew crunch the bread in the French Dip! We are making French Dip sandwiches this week. I bought a small chuck roast because I am tired of turkey. We are also making cobb salad with leftover turkey instead of chicken- I make cobb salad at least once a month.
Philippe's has the BEST French Dip Sandwiches in my opinion and I have had many. I get the double dipped but if you have sauce on the side that works too. When you live in L.A. you learn how to get around the traffic so you don't have to deal with it so much. I was hoping you were going to hit Tommy's Burgers, I love them. It is open 24 hours a day and there was always a line. When I was in college and studying late, I would make a run to Tommy's for a Double chili cheeseburger. All of my friends and of course myself who have moved away from L.A. still talk about how we miss Tommy's. At 3 in the morning, catering trucks would be lined up for blocks to pick up their orders for the day. My dad who was born in 1922 was the one who first introduced me to Tommy's. He loved their burgers and since he was a police officer, it was a great place to hit when working the night shifts. Everything used to be made fresh at the Beverly/Rampart location and then delivered to their other locations but you are at the best one, the one I always would choose to go to. Their Tamales are good too. I loved the Brown Derby Cobb Salad and I have made it many times for a crowd of people. It is a beautiful spread and I make both the Bleu Cheese vinaigrette and also a creamy bleu cheese dressing (for a selection for those eating it) to serve with it. This is a seriously delicious salad. I am not a fan of California Roll because I have allergies so I can't speak on that. I loved Hot Fudge Sundaes at a kid. The 50's diners always had them and they were excellent. The contrast of the temperatures of hot fudge and cold ice cream made them a special treat, so rich and decadent.
Thanks for watching and we appreciate you sharing your love and experiences for LA's the food scene! We would love to hear if you have any more recommendations for us for future trips to LA.

I grew up on Tommy’s burgers. I used to live in the neighborhood when I was a kid and my fam and I would buy them by the dozen. Even my grandma loved them! For one of their anniversaries, they sold each burger for 25 cents. The line went around the block. It was insane! haven’t had one since 2020. I think it’s time for me to make a Tommy’s run. Sadly, other locations just don’t compare to the original stand. Cheers to you both for a great video!
Mmmm, lots of tasty treats on this one! Im not a sweet fan as im diabetic but lead me down that savoury route and im there! Loved the look of the original cheeseburger although like you I'd have to double up! Next time im in LA im going to hit up some of those spots! As i told you before im awaiting hip replacement surgery, so had the first one done last week and need to wait another 6-8 weeks to get the other done then the world is my oyster once more! I honestly think that LA traffic gets a bad rep. Is it bad? Yes. But you get used to it. Just listen to the radio or a podcast, and realize that you're going to hit traffic. You'll be fine.
The chili cheese burgers I am familiar with are served open face with a beef patty on each bun half, smothered with chili, topped with diced onions and jalapeño, and melted cheese. Eaten with a fork.
In 1936, a man named Bob Wian of Bob's Pantry in Glendale, CA invented the three part bun for the first ever double decker hamburger. A customer asked Wian to give him something different, so Wian cut the bun into three parts and added a second patty. The burger became a hit. It would become the signature item at his restaurant, which, as it grew, expanded and changed its name to Bob's Big Boy. The double decker burger is known as the Big Boy, which was named after a six year old chubby boy that used to do chores around the restaurant in exchange for burgers. Wian called the youngster "Big Boy". and the name stuck, for both the kid and the double decker hamburger. Later, McDonalds would adopt the double deck burger in their restaurants and called it the Big Mac. But Wian did it first. Unfortunately, the original Glendale location has long been closed. The closest location to the original restaurant is located in Burbank and has a real interesting history attached to it. The Beatles ate there, and the booth that they sat in is marked with a plaque. Elvis' manager came to the Burbank Bob's Big Boy location to offer diners a "free concert" being filmed at the studio down the street (without letting them know who was artist playing). That concert would become known as Elvis' Comeback Special. The restaurant also still has car hop service on Saturday and Sunday nights, and Classic Car Shows on Friday nights. And Tommy's chili does not have beans. I noticed that several people recommended their chili cheese fries. Honestly, I don't rank them among my top 5, particularly because they use American cheese (which isn't real cheese since its percentage of milk is too low to qualify). There are a number of places around the Los Angeles area that have chili cheese fries made with grated cheddar cheese, which in my opinion is vastly superior.
Strictly speaking, American cheese is actually American Cheddar cheese. But yes, the process has been so altered for the sake of cheap and easy mass production that there's not much of cheddar, or even of cheese, left in it. I guess that just leaves the American in it.
Only time I had Cobb Salad was at DisneyWorld’s Brown Derby, at Hollywood Studios in Orlando. And as you know, the Brown Derby is iconic in LA. Very good, but hard for me to get excited over rabbit food.
@ DisneyWorld is an entirely different experience than DisneyLand in Anaheim. But in both places… Their restaurants are ridiculously overpriced and totally stink!
Buying anything, including food, in DTLA is going to cost more than buying it in other areas of LA. Re the hot fudge sundae, I remember CC Brown's. One could also buy jars of that original thick fudge sauce there - it was heavenly right out of the jar without warming it up or adding the ice cream, whipped cream and almonds. For a while one could buy jars of it online from Lawry's Restaurants (which also started in LA), which bought the secret recipe from the family when the family decided to quit the business. However, I just checked and it's no longer available there, either. So it's just other versions out there, like the one you had. But then, any hot fudge sundae is damn good!
@ if you like bookstores you really need to go to the unique ones in LA like The Last Bookstore, Ripped Bodice, etc, places with great books, customer service, and unique and quirky book art!
Yesh, LA traffic is horrible. Orlando traffic at least isn’t that bad. You usually get to your destination in about 30 minutes maybe an hour if you are going to the coast.
Actually that is only one claim by a chef named Toji a Canadian immigrant in 1971. Ichiro Mashita, a Los Angeles-based sushi chef & his assistant Teruo Imaizumi at a restaurant called Tokyo Kaikan in the 1960's also claimed to have invented it. Neither has undeniable proof. Tojo tried to patent it in the 90s but failed becuz he couldn't prove it. Many other Los Angeles Japanese immigrants also claim the same.
I used to work sort of close to the original Tommy’s on Rampart. There’s one near me now, but I didn’t like it. Either that location isn’t as good as the one on Rampart or Tommy’s changed the recipe. The a few times I’ve been to the original location, I absolutely loved it.
I love how much you guys love each other. Although Nicola can be a little controlling, I admire the acceptance and love. Thanks for sharing. I can't commit to subscribing only because I can only take small doses of that control. But well wisher non the less.
I had friends come down from Chicago, I took them to Tommy's and they just refused to eat it just from it's appearance. Although, I warned them that it doesn't look good but tastes incredible! They just wouldn't budge. Oh well, their loss! I'll have to send them this video.
I had a Chicago Italian Beef sandwich with a dip and it was the best sandwich I had ever tasted. Unfortunately, they sold the business, but not the recipe. 😢
@thebritstry ...it was roast beef and Italian sausage with grilled bell peppers and onions, and with an Au ju sauce. To this day it is the best sandwich I have ever tasted, and I don't even like bell peppers.
Forget the Grove. They tore down most of the historic farmers market to build it. I used to live near there before it became the grove. My daughter and I were just beginning to explore the farmers market and their antique shops when most of it was torn down for the grove. Pinks is definitely where they should’ve gone. It’s a very iconic place.
As a third-generation Angeleno, I can tell you that the horrors of L.A.'s traffic is somewhat exaggerated... Because 80% of the traffic and be avoided if you are willing to take the less obvious route. Locals learn how to avoid traffic. Tourists and newcomers are the ones who sit endlessly in traffic, because they do not know the side streets and less obvious routes. Phillipe's has been *in Downtown L.A.* since 1908... But its current location (since 1951) at 1001 N. Alameda Street is the FIFTH location....with its previous location now underneath the 101 Freeway South of Union Station. And the biggest thing you missed.... L.A. as the home to gourmet food trucks. Which all points back to 2008, when chef Roy Choi hit the streets with his food truck serving Korean tacos stuffed with tender short rib flavor bombs wrapped in a tortilla Which revolutionized the notion of mobile food.
I really enjoy your enthusiasm and the mixture of humor in your videos. I will keep watching - you keep filming!

That is a great suggestion!!! How much do canoes cost?!?! 🤣🤣
Warg vs. fellbeast.
Thanks for sharing your wonderful memories!! If only they were 25 cents now!
Thanks guys for keeping me sane whilst recovering at home! One of my fave channels!👍👏👏♥️🏴🇺🇸
we are glad you enjoyed the video! There are so many savory options out there, and I can't wait for you to explore those spots in LA. Wishing you a smooth recovery! Thanks for watching😊
Some of the food you ate looked amazing. I left So Cal in 2012 and I do not miss that traffic. Thanks for the fun adventure!
Thanks for sharing your experience! We had fun filming it! Thanks for watching
IM SO PROUD OF OUR GIRL NICOLA....EATING A TOMATO....WHAT A GAL...! ! !(she must have been drunk)
Yeah! I am definitely growing 😊
You guys are great. Traffic sucks in LA
😂 Yes, it's very busy.
Surprisingly LA traffic is not the worst in the country
Next time you eat a messy burger, keep the paper wrapped around the bottom
That's a great idea, we'll try that!
I always look forward to Saturdays and finding out where you’re taking me on your next food adventure and what I’ll be putting on a Must Visit list. You folks put out quality material. The competition was fun, too. And Nicola, I see you eating those tomatoes. That’s an interesting change.
We appreciate you watching and glad you enjoyed the video! It's always a pleasure to have you join us on our food adventures. Thank you for continuing to watch and support our little channel 😊
$30 for a Cobb salad is insane. Definitely LA prices.
Yeah! That is a lot
❤❤love your fun and enthusiastic energy. Glad you are enjoying America 😂
We are so glad you're enjoying our adventures! We are having so much fun! Thank you for watching 😊
I honestly think that LA traffic gets a bad rep. Is it bad? Yes. But you get used to it. Just listen to the radio or a podcast, and realize that you're going to hit traffic. You'll be fine.
Great point! Rookie error and visiting tourist areas probably doesn’t help either! Thanks for watching
Yes, it gets a bad rep. The thing is, it is not the worst traffic in America.
The chili cheese burgers I am familiar with are served open face with a beef patty on each bun half, smothered with chili, topped with diced onions and jalapeño, and melted cheese. Eaten with a fork.
Thanks for sharing your version of the classic chili cheese burger! We're always open to trying different variations!
Love Tommy's best is were you guys went
Thank you for watching! Tommy's really surprised us... We loved it!
😂😂😂 Scooter!
Andrew is handling horseradish,Nicola is doing tomatoes and less white exposed to drippings.Humm🤔🤔 testing out the next gen AI bots ?
Yeah, we are definitely changing making these videos😊 Thanks for watching
This would be California classic foods. Now you have to try California Cuisine. Try Spago's
Thanks for the suggestion, we’ll have to give it a try!😊 Thanks for watching
Spagos is only for rich Angelenos. lol
Tommy's is hard to beat!
Your right! It was so tasty and great value!!!
@@thebritstry ...just watching, almost made me go get some Tommy's! It has always been a tasty value play.
If you ever come to Florida you need to try a Cuban Sandwich and a Greek Salad
Thank you for the idea! It definitely on our list of things to try
Love y'all eclectic content..
Thanks for sharing your thoughts! Thanks for watching
I love Tommy's!
YES! So did we... so surprisingly good! Thanks for watching
Only time I had Cobb Salad was at DisneyWorld’s Brown Derby, at Hollywood Studios in Orlando. And as you know, the Brown Derby is iconic in LA.
Very good, but hard for me to get excited over rabbit food.
Thanks for sharing your experience, the brown derby is iconic and Andrew has never been to Disney, maybe we should make it happen 😊
@ DisneyWorld is an entirely different experience than DisneyLand in Anaheim. But in both places…
Their restaurants are ridiculously overpriced and totally stink!
Love French Dip in Au Jus ❤
I like that you are showing the prices in this episode.
Thank you so much for your feedback!
Thanks for the great history lesson, we love hearing about the stories behind the foods we try! Thanks for watching
Yummy❄️❄️
Thanks for watching! 😊
Perhaps your best editing job so far! But next time don't forget the metro!
Thanks for the feedback! We are always looking to improve. The metro is definitely worth exploring next time. thanks for the suggestion!
Ooohhhh....a little Top Gear in L.A....a little Clarkson, May and the Hamster........love those three idiots.
😊 We love top gear too!
You need to go to Donut Man during strawberry season!!
Thanks for the suggestion! We’ll definitely have to check it out in the future
@ if you like bookstores you really need to go to the unique ones in LA like The Last Bookstore, Ripped Bodice, etc, places with great books, customer service, and unique and quirky book art!
As bad as the traffic is in LA, it is not the worst traffic in America
Sorry, Nicola! Andrew got to 3rd stop first and didn't see you anywhere, lol. Hot fudge sundaes are the only way I enjoy vanilla ice cream!
You got us! We will have to keep an eye on the race next time. Your right the fudge is a perfect way to enjoy ice cream
Sorry did not see this video until now 😊
Thank you for taking time out of your day to give it a watch 😊
Cobb salad or 4 Tommy's burgers? Tommy's wins again!
Tommy's is a classic for a reason!
Phillips’s is original
It was really good!! especially the Au Jus.
Yesh, LA traffic is horrible. Orlando traffic at least isn’t that bad. You usually get to your destination in about 30 minutes maybe an hour if you are going to the coast.
Thanks for sharing your experience with traffic! It definitely adds to the adventure.
California Roll was created in Vancouver, Canada
Thanks for sharing! We would love to visit Vancouver to give it a try there.
Thank you so much for your kind words! We appreciate you taking the time to share your thoughts
Assertive, not controlling.
I had friends come down from Chicago, I took them to Tommy's and they just refused to eat it just from it's appearance. Although, I warned them that it doesn't look good but tastes incredible! They just wouldn't budge. Oh well, their loss! I'll have to send them this video.
That’s a great story!!! It's hard to judge a book by its cover. Thanks for watching!
😂😂😂 that's not traffic! Traffic is bumper to bumper when you sit still, sometimes for minutes at a time.
Thanks for watching 😊
Tommy's!
Even my social security payments can't cover $30 salads! {LOL}
Yeah! Andrew is still shock by that one😂
Then you go to the places that have Cobb salads for half that price or even less.
I had a Chicago Italian Beef sandwich with a dip and it was the best sandwich I had ever tasted. Unfortunately, they sold the business, but not the recipe. 😢
We are so sorry to hear that! That sounds like a sandwich we would have loved to try!
@thebritstry ...it was roast beef and Italian sausage with grilled bell peppers and onions, and with an Au ju sauce. To this day it is the best sandwich I have ever tasted, and I don't even like bell peppers.
the chili burger first in cincinati
Thanks for the recommendation! We’ll definitely have to try that in the future 😊 thanks for watching
You should’ve went to PINK’s Hot Dogs and The Grove. Los Angeles Icons
Thanks for the advice! we will definitely put Pinks on the list for next time, we would also love to hear if you have any more recommendations.
Before you two get divorced you will have to go to Florida. Orlando, Miami and Key West ❤🇺🇸🙏🏻✌🏻
We would love to! It’s definitely on the list! Thanks for the suggestion
* go to Florida … not get divorced 😂🤣
3 minutes in, and you had an Italian Beef in Chicago, NOT a French Dip. They are quite different (they're both made with beef, however).
You're absolutely right! Italian Beef and French Dip are definitely distinct sandwiches, each with their unique flavors. Thanks for pointing that out!
Thanks for the advice and information! We will definitely have to come back to check out some food trucks! Thanks for watching
I kept checking my headphones when I heard your voice only on one channel.
Thanks for watching! we will check to make sure there is no issue with the upload. Thanks
