    You don’t need to worry about solar panels for EV charging in the bush - NRMA or some other mob fitted a remote charging station with a big diesel generator, and physics says just driving a diesel car is more efficient than charging an electric one with a diesel generator. John Cadogan did a piece on it. You couldn’t make it up.

    Another thing not mentioned is that vehicles like the RAM 3500 and the Silverado 2500 registered in the NB2 category (/more than one ton payload) are exempt from NVES as they’re light trucks. Not “ cars’.

      @@BackChatI forgot to mention that they are over 4.5 T GVM, that is what makes them exempt. Not the over one ton payload.

    No one really gives two hoots about NVES at the moment.But in a few years time,when these vehicles are expected to achieve a rediculous 3L to 4L/100,there is going to be trouble.Businesses and families may not be able to buy a vehicle that suits their needs,without paying a premium which will be an added tax,increasing the cost of the vehicle.Or the manufacturer may decide to remove some or all of their vehicles from the Australian market.Many people and businesses will probably hang onto their vehicles for longer.Prices of some second hand vehicles will probably increase.All fun and games to reduce a negligable amount of emissions in the whole scheme of things.And to add,our late model modern vehicles are not exactly "dirty",they have been regulated by an emisions scheme which was implemented in the '70s,and made more stringent as time went on.

    Isn't the tax applied across a manufacturers fleet? If that is true then Toyota will have a better chance to offset emissions of larger vehicles e.g. Hilux, 300 series, with hybrids. A company like Isuzu Ute does not have smaller lower carbon emitting vehicles to offset emissions from DMax / MUX therefore those vehicles will be harder hit by NVES tax.... Happy to be corrected.

      You're absolutely correct, unfortunately the panel did not do their research. The greater the variiety of vehicles sold by a manufacturer the greater the possibility of off setting price increases on their higher emission vehicles as long as they sell more lower emission vehicles. Using the Ineos example, Ineos has no low emission vechivles therefore all their sales will incur the emissions tax. Also noting that there is a year on year increase in tax for high emission vehicles until 2030 at which point the max tax will be reached (until the next gov emissions scheme/scam)

      Likewise Ford not looking too sharp at present. Otherwise they’ll just have to raise prices to cover penalties.

    Do you really think its possible to hold a $100.000 car for 12 months in stock when u can get $5000 in intrest it would be cheeper to pay the tax

    Looks like ill be keeping my 80 series that runs on lpg and petrol and my diesel 75 series till they die, maybe when we have cheap small EVs that are under $20k i will buy one for small day to day trips but will always keep my Landcruiser's for the bigger trips and keep my mazda 3 as a small run around thats cheap on fuel.

    Because of this new vehicle efficiency standard Toyota and other manufacturers will be bringing their 4x4's with the inclusion of Adblue. I think the new Prado will have an Adblue system and probably the new Hilux will have one as well.

      They’d have to be able to run without adblue else they’d be a remote liability.

    The Toyota HiLux was the biggest selling vehicle in Australia in 2021 and 2022, the Ford Ranger was the second biggest selling vehicle in Australia in 2021 and 2022. The Ford Ranger was the biggest selling vehicle in Australia in 2023 and the Toyota HiLux was the second biggest selling vehicle in 2023. The Ford Ranger looks like being the biggest selling vehicle again in 2024. This is going by Vfacts. Not sure where you got the sales figures for the Landcruiser 70 Series over those three years though?? It definitely doesn't sound right? Unless you're counting all vehicles under the "Landcruiser' name, which then there's a number of different vehicles - 70 Series, Prado, 300 Series.
    Some manufacturers have already stated they wouldn't be able to 'turn the factories on fast enough' to take advantage of the loophole, just for the Aussie market. They could definitely stockpile vehicles though if they wanted, but that's also a risk, as the vehicles could sit there for a long time and manufactures don't want that.
    Any brand that sells big numbers of diesel powered vehicles and at least don't have any hybrids in their range to offset those diesel powered vehicles emissions, is going to struggle - Ford and Isuzu I'm looking at you! Isuzu don't have anything to offer, yet Ford have axed all it's passenger car range and also three of their SUV's, ICE powered Puma, Escape and the Endura! They are bringing in the Puma Gen-E (EV), but they're not going to sell enough of them, including the Mustang Mach E, to lower their emission levels. They'll need to bring in more fuel efficient vehicles, whether they are ICE, Hybrid or PHEV and sell enough of them so that they're not going to get court out. The 'Ranger Car Company' will need to diversify ..... otherwise what's the alternative? Exit the Australian market??

    Very interesting chat and comments section.
    A couple of questions, if Light trucks are exempt will this see the rise in American trucks which sit wider and have a wider turning circle leading to more track degradation.
    With the new tax will oeople be more willing to fix, repair, or 'baby' their current car to avoid the tax.
    You have to wonder how effective the tax will be, all it appears to do, from a cynical point of view is make money for the government and any of the unscrupulous car companies

    Toyota will have more credits to offset larger vehicles than Ineos/Isuzu/Ram etc.

      ​@@wayne5741 I don't think the EV options from Ineos/Ram/isuzu are suitable for the Australian market and won't sell well.
      As for the AUSEV ford, didn't it get 250km range towing? not suitable for Australia (outside the major cities, but then why even buy one)

      @@wayne5741 I'd like to see Opel back in Australia as their mainstream Stellantis brand here and offer their full range of EV's with a few ICE powered options in there too. I had a BK Holden Astra RS-V manual hatch a few years back, that thing was totally underrated by a lot of people! Not sure if Stellantis Australia can be bothered though, they've made a mess of Peugeot and Citroen here, so Opel would probably be put in the 'too hard basket' as well.
