  • “Chew some gum, stand up straight and shut your mouth.”
    On the latest episode of the Oxygen Advantage® podcast, OA founder Patrick McKeown welcomes renowned orthodontists Dr. John and Dr. Mike Mew.
    Dr. John Mew is the originator of orthotropics, a type of oral posture training designed to prevent poor craniofacial development in children. A lifelong pursuit, Dr. Mew has always been intrigued by the development of the face. After seeing that many young people develop retracted jaws which can negatively affect their appearance as well as contribute to issues such as sleep apnea, he began to develop his theories.
    John is joined on the podcast by his son, Dr. Mike Mew, a fellow orthodontist who has continued his father’s work to improve the craniofacial development of the next generation from his clinic in Purley, London.
    Both men talk to Patrick about the reasoning behind their work as well as the benefits of keeping the mouth closed both for improved functional breathing, crooked teeth and improved craniofacial development.
    Find out more about the Mew’s work at the John Mew Orthotropics website and Orthodontichealth.co.uk.

    I just love dr John Mew, his way of lecturing is so clear and straight forward that anyone can understand. 90 yrs old and he is so lucid and coherent. A real genius. Might God bless him and keep him for many many years ahead. The world really needs him.

    I think as someone with their finger on the pulse of current pop culture. Mewing, and proper tongue posture in general, has actually become a MAINSTREAM trend amongst young kids in this generation! It's commonly talked about, commonly understood, and they even find it TRENDY AND COOL, so the compliance is actually high among Generation Alpha and Young Gen Z! Very cool information for those interested in Orthotropics and general hollistic health!

    I grew up playing violin in the orchestra and was mewing without realizing it so I could breathe properly. As an adult I dont make time for the violin anymore and have developed a double chin. I've been mewing for a few years now to help get back to where I was.

    This is so good and such great information for every parent. I'm a strident campaigner for mouth breathing, apply tape to my mouth at night and although recommending it to every adult I meet - most shudder in horror, snorers particularly. Keep it up, boys, we'll get the message to parents worldwide. 😁😁

      'Close Your Mouth' is a mantra Patrick McKeown has lived by for years.
      In fact, one of his first books has that very title (buteykoclinic.com/close-your-mouth/).

    Most of these studies are not entirely novel, growing up in Africa we were always being corrected by our uneducated mothers, aunts and gran mothers to close our mouths , when a child is sleeping with mouth open the mother always tries to close up the lips. I recall being told that if I leave my mouth open I will have extended teeth’s. We see kids who breathe from the mouth and always have open mouths having teeth’s bigger than their mouth. Now I know what my ancestors knew, even without any scientific evidence. Thank you for the information many have lost this knowledge.

    Great Conversation! Nasal hygiene is under emphasized to help nasal breathing. A Neti pot is a great way for daily cleansing of the nose.

    The Mew's are hilarious. If you didn't know, I'd never guess they were Father and Son by their relationship, but personality wise, they are definitely father and son lol.

    If you could only swat the hands and make them sit up straight like 100 years ago. We'd be in a better more educated place. Prim and proper taught nose breathing. Corsets did too? Maybe alegedidly. This is all a joke. Demonetized.
    It is a tough topic and needs to be discussed. Our facial structure is going the route of the PUG. Poor puppy

    If tongue is supposed to be up to upper palate,why some tongue are below..what causes below ?

    • @OxygenAdvantage
      @OxygenAdvantage  Год назад

      It can be a variety of reasons
      @boamahababio9025
      We tend to talk about it as it relates to breathing. Mouth breathing is a contributing factor to poor craniofacial development and this can include the receding jaw and the narrowing of face.
      These conditions tend to lend themselves to a impaired tongue resting posture.

    20 years old. How do I make sure I no longer mouth breathe in my sleep without using mouth tape. Also how do I go into the airway health field whether it be a role similar to what you do or to what Mike does?

      Without tape ita impossible to know, tape wont hurtn nobody. Mew mew mew and youll change your sirway health

    • @OxygenAdvantage
      @OxygenAdvantage  2 года назад +1

      Hello Hal,
      Mouth taping will make the transition to nose breathing much easier.
      Our myotape (oxygenadvantage.com/product/myotape/) is a tape that surrounds the mouth, pulling the lips together, meaning you can still talk, cough, drink, etc. if you need to.
      But a proper change to nasal breathing only comes with daily practice of functional breathing exercises. It's your breathing during the day that will define your breathing at night.
      Getting into the breathing field starts with learning as much as you can about functional breathing and going from there. You can start by trying one of the many courses we offer at OA.com and learn the exercises from an official instructor.(oxygenadvantage.com/breathing-workshops/).
      Kind regards,
      Ronan

      @@OxygenAdvantage thanks ill look into the course. Is the myotape better than the tapes that you can put across the mouth in an x shape and better than the nose tape strips. What is best to stop mouth breathing during sleep?

    To say "nutrition of the parents can reduce or eliminate the need for orthodontics" is absolute crazy/not true stuff.
    I'm here to proclaim that it is true. Two kids of ours are polar opposite and nutrition was the difference. Or was it level of stress. Maybe all of the above.

    I mean like, no offence to John, but just looking at the width of his maxilla and mandible, and then looking at Mike, like damn whether it was John choosing the right wife, ensuring his son was exposed to the right environmental factors, or both, whatever it was it sure as hell worked. Mike has the widest gonions this world has ever seen.
