    True story: MicroCenter for 3 months at $15 doing board level repair on Dells and data backups. Hated it and walked out, a month later picked up by a contractor for Xerox at $18.75 and hour, drive hundreds of miles to network MFC’s for a year and a half. COVID hit and that job fizzled. Then got recruited for IT mobility tech mdm and help desk for $25 and hour in October 2020. Full benefits and full time. In three months it’ll be a year and I’m looking for my next move. Already speaking to Robert Half and was told they can beat $25.

    I just started as Helpdesk Tier 1 straight out of community college CIS associate, 35 years old (Industry switch).
    Being in the same room and working with more advanced teams like Infrastructure, networking, Systems Admin, Devops, Tier 2, Info Security etc is great because I can get an insight of the stuff they do and learn from them , which will give me a better picture of the path I will have to take down the road. For those who are in the same boat, my 2 cents would be to sacrifice in the beginning if you have to, the EXPERIENCE is the most important part, it will pay off in the long run.

    Great thing about desktop support is that you meet A LOT of people on the job. Those people remember that ones that helped them the most, and had great attitudes. You end up getting jobs from those people, either at the same company, or if they move elsewhere and need to hire. Attitude is everything!

      I had a similar job history from the oppoaite end of the educational spectrum. While i enjoyed the classes for my degrees, I think I could have been just as succesful without them.

    • @eman0828
      @eman0828 2 года назад +8

      Yeah Help Desk is generally the stepping stone into any other higher level role esp Systems Admin and Network Admin. Without Help Desk, Network Support or Desktop Support it would be virtually impossible to land a job as a Network or Systems Administrator because you need experience. You start from the bottom and work your way up just like if you want to become a manager. I often see too many college grads complaining that they can't find a Networking job that thinks they can get a Network Admin job straight out of college. It doesn't work that way in the real world. Get a help desk job, get your experience and certs and move up. That simple!

    I'm just getting in IT, only have few months experience as PC Technician 6 years ago, total of 1 year experience as helpdesk 12 years ago, have been studying network my own and at school (also my humble personal lab with only a switch, a KVM, one desktop PC and 2 laptops), I have good personal experience as a frontend developer as well. I studied the whole course to take the A+ exam, but I'm not taking the exam cause it's too expensive.
    Anyway, I just got hired to work as Data Center Technician for Amazon, start next Monday. They'll give me around 6 weeks training and it sounds like a great start. I really hope this is just the beginning of my IT career. I'm extremely happy and would like to thank you Zach for all information and effort you put in here. I expect to get a good network and server experience in order to get into cyber security.
    PS. I'll take the Net+ and Sec+ for sure (and maybe the CCNA before going to PNPT and eJPT).

      Is IT degree worth it? Is information security analyst the same as cyber security? Does it require coding? Can I be information security analyst and/or cyber security with IT bachelor degree?

    • @FaLkraydz
      @FaLkraydz 2 года назад

      @@olympic-ass-eater I don’t think IT degree is worth it, but I’m taking only for status, only to weigh on the Resumé. Certification is a better path nowadays because it’s a more direct and faster path, but in the end, it always depend on how you like to pursue your future. You can become anything in IT field even without a degree and certification, but certification gives you a clear path.
      Information Security Analyst is a position within the cyber security field. To be in cyber security, it’s not required to know how to code, but it’s really helpful to know HTML and Python (don’t need to be a developer though).
      I’ve been listening to a few podcasts on Spotify. A good one that will help you with all of those questions and help you develop an opinion is: The hacker Factory. This one has Phillip Wylie as host of the show.

    Yes, the pay is different depending on the location, but what about the average cost of living depending on location? I haven’t looked into it but I assume it balances out to the same thing regardless of where you live; if you get paid more, the cost of living is higher there, but if you get paid less there then the cost of living is less, so I believe we should be looking at ratios.

The credit Union I work for have an IT department and I would like something is that area. I’ve seen the google IT support professional certification, and also comptia A+. I’m really new to all this but it’s something I would enjoy. I know I hear a lot of people say the field is in demand for people with certification. How true is that? And also which one would be better in mean that I would land a decent playing job to support my family and not live paycheck to paycheck. And for the computing a+ are their classes or is it all self taught my books and then you challenge the test? I would appreciate y’all’s input.
