I live in Alabama, and have only been to Fort Irwin, Barstow, and San Francisco. This was a great video to watch while I was working on my website to see what Los Angeles looks like.
At the 2:19:45 mark in the video, the vehicle is approaching Sunset Blvd and Laurel Canyon Blvd. If you pause it at this point you'll see two spots that have a very musical history attached to them: On the left side of the street (below the Britney Spears billboard) you can see the restaurant Hyde (surrounded by green hedges). In the 50's and 60's this was the location of Pandora's Box (a teen nightclub). When they started to enforce a curfew on young people, the teens in the area staged a protest against it and used Pandora's Box as their base of operations. Stephen Stills witnessed the battle between the teens and the police and ended up writing the song "For What It's Worth" ("Stop, Hey what's that sound? Everybody look what's going down") because of the violence he saw. On the right side of the street you'll see some blacked out construction fencing. This was the location of The Garden of Allah (a hotel resort frequented by the elite of Hollywood's "Golden Age"). When it fell into disrepair and became a shell of its former self, the city had it torn down to make way for retail developments. This action inspired Joni Mitchell (who was living up in Laurel Canyon at the time) to write the words "They paved paradise and put up a parking lot" in her hit "Big Yellow Taxi". So much history in that area and in this section of the video :)
I'm very glad I've been there. Actually one month ago. Absolutely life-altering experience. I hope to have the opportunity to go there again in the nearest future. If going there is part of your dream, then do not hesitate anymore and just do it.
Yep. We have an obsession with huge, fuel inefficient vehicles here in the US. Even in California, the state with the most expensive fuel in the country, there are tons of people who drive large trucks with big engines that get poor fuel economy.
Brings back pretty good memories from a few years ago! I visited from NYC and was blown away by how “vast” downtown LA felt. I walked over to the Staples Center and around the area. I would like to visit again soon though- it’s a lot warmer! ps.Thx for putting the street names!
Im from and LA and felt the opposite as you. I was blown away by how vast NYC was. Its miles of tall skyscrapers. LAs downtown is so tiny by comparison. The downtown area stopped being developed in the 30s because of the great depression, and after the war the trend was so build cookie cutter suburbs instead. So LA has a lot more suburbs than skyscrapers
