  • I've finally crossed over into the world of venomous snake-keeping - even if my first hot looks like a pile of dirt. In this video, we meet Smokey the cottonmouth (or water moccasin) for the very first time, feed him and all three of my other snakes, and take a peek at their current enclosures!

    I already had a pinned comment on this video but I gotta address this - yes, ten gallons is TOO SMALL for a bp of Bowie’s size. Balls are active snakes which do best with room to roam. It became apparent after this video was uploaded that the time to upgrade him has already come and gone, so he was moved into a larger enclosure a few days after filming. I have a personal responsibility to practice and publicize only the best for my animals, and I’m more than willing to emphasize that ball pythons deserve space. I have no desire for impressionable viewers to come away with the opposite conclusion. However, on the flip side of this - a minor infraction, such as housing a snake in a territory that’s too small should not be mistaken for outright, blatant animal abuse when the snake is otherwise healthy and well-cared for. This does not specifically refer to me. Attacking and berating other members of your reptile-loving community will never be the right way to bring about change or make your message heard. We all love our animals, we all want what’s best for them. If you believe someone else is in the wrong, you do not attack them - you educate and inform them. You will get absolutely nowhere with a bad attitude and a sense of superiority, and in attacking other members of your community you become actively detrimental to it. Chill out and stop being a keyboard warrior.

    If you’re noticing the distinct lack of Koshō and Tipsy in this video, I’m sorry to report that it’s because they’ve both passed on - Koshō was put to sleep after a long battle with her invasive fungal infection, Tipsy’s neurological disorder caught up with her and she went quietly overnight. Death is a part of life in that the more animals you work with, the more you eventually lose. Still, I never forget that with every dead animal goes a little mind. Hopefully they go in peace. Rather than staying upset about it I let it motivate me to continue providing the best care for all the living animals I still own.

      Yeah I recently caught a young Brown Watersnake and I decided to keep it cause it was small and I've wanted a watersnake but out of nowhere he died which is a real shame it must have been something else cause he had all the care requirements and he was eating well but next year is the Tallahassee Reptiday which is the 1st one they've had in 3 years I hope to maybe add another snake to the collection probably another Watersnake or a new Python I also plan on getting a female leatherback Bearded Dragon to breed with my male,Smoky's awesome btw..my mom would never let me keep a Venomous snake but if I did I'd love to have a Copperhead with a nice forest floor design enclosure ill also be posting a compilation vid soon of different animals including me taking some of my reptiles,rabbit,and the electric catfish to a vbs where I fed my Ball Python a frozen mouse the kids got a kick out of it and got to pet her btw you excited for the new Irwins show?

    I understand about the hots being local, but I still suggest that you get ahold of some crofab especially for your atrox. There is always the risk that you won't be verbal if you present to the ER, but if everything is labeled and you have crofab that is up to date, you increase your chances of survival. Additionally, if you have the crofab I suggest you get an Epipen as well because many people reject crofab due to allergies. This may be a matter of taste, but I am not really a fan of the way you are keeping the cottonmouth. You really need a professional locking cage for her and any hots you get with proper labels and names clearly displayed. I say these things because I care about this hobby even if I do not keep hots, myself. It only takes one bad event or a fudged ER visit to give the lobbyists ammo against all keepers everywhere. Please consider my concerns. Get crofab, locking cages, and a more secure room and envrionment for your hots.

    • @Cavegeckosol
      @Cavegeckosol 5 лет назад +1

      @Not Your Ordinary Jojoba Apart from it being illegal in my state, I also would find those expenses too steep. They really are part of the cost of the animal in my mind. Also keep in mind that all antivenin has short shelf life. You need to replace it every year or two depending on the serum.

    • @mattwestcigarreviews
      @mattwestcigarreviews 3 года назад +2

      1. Crofab is about $7000 per vial and he could easily need dozens of vials if he got tagged. It would be insanely expensive to keep on hand.
      2. No.... many people do not reject crofab due to allergies. This used to be the case, but it is since outdated information. They removed some of the genetic tagging in the antivenin and now almost no one has reactions. The reactions that people have these days are from the snake bite itself, which is akin to a bee allergy.
      3. If he wasn't verbal that is why he SHOULD have envenomation protocals in his venomous room. These would contain clear instructions for the hospital staff.
      4. Yes.... he absolutely needs locking cages, and not a brick.

  • @tasiasutton7105

    Hey Daniel, do you keep anti venom on hand just incase anything happened with the cottonmouth? Shes v pretty

    • @AlucardRawks
      @AlucardRawks 5 лет назад +12

      I can't speak for Daniel but because this is a local species for him he can go to the hospital for antivenom if he gets bitten.

    • @mattwestcigarreviews
      @mattwestcigarreviews 3 года назад +2

      There would be no point. The local hospital has crofab on hand. It also costs about $7000 per vial and a bite could use 30 vials easily. So there is no need for him to buy it.

    I'm not a huge fan of people who tightly scrutinize other keepers for their personal practice's I personally think that it is very rude to do that as you don't know what they're animals are like, even though ball pythons have a pretty consistent d'asyle state about them they have a tendency to be very different from each other. But on the other hand, A 10 gallon for a to year old snake is a bit small and I mean like really small I don't even think about it he would be able to stretch out completely if wanted too. I mean snakes don't generally do that a lot but it's usually a rule of thumb to allow them to. I know a 10 gallon is a very quick fix but I'm just saying that I politely disagree with your keeping style of him. I have a ball python who is one year old and Just a little smaller than yours and he is thriving in a 40 gallon with multiple hinds and enclosed decor( So that he is not too frightened about the open space). I mean I could have continued keeping him in his 20 gallon but I chose for him to have more room and more things to explore( Since I had the money and space to do so) And he seems happier that way. But you can do whatever you want that's just my opinion/tip😊 have a nice day!!

    correct me if im wrong- but do boas not have a feeding response? I was told not to feed them in the same tank so they wont strike at you when trying to handle them.

    My ball python would love that 44 gallon tub. He loves to stretch out and explore. My female is the opposite. She just wants to stay in her hide in the corner at all times. She rarely comes out. I’m working on getting her more socialized. She was a rescue and is very timid and easily spooked.

    Can you do a tutorial on how to build a tub like that? It looks awesome. And if it’s bioactive or not? You should do a video on it!
