Massive props to ersatz_cats for the incredible, comprehensive research he's done on this story. Check out his site, www.perfectpacman.com for more like this!
@lonemichi5289 yeah I made sure to reach out to @ersatz_cats long before I released the video, and we discussed a ton of stuff, including attribution and how that can be, let's just say, complicated, when dealing with the looming potential of legal threats. 😅
This is a point of contention when people watch the King of Kong documentary. Even with the production team and people behind the filming not liking Mitchell at all and editing it so it would portray him in a bad light, when you look at how Billy acts outside of that, you question if they even had to do anything to accomplish that.
I'll also comment on Carlos Piniero. I believe he had the best of intentions when he stepped into the mess. We "bumped heads" a little at the beginning... we were on opposite sides of the coin at that time... but props to Carlos. He did the work. He tried to replicate what Billy had done. He finally came to the conclusion everyone else had. And admitted it. Publicly. And Team Billy turned on him. Carlos has integrity. He stood his ground, he didn't cave in. He went where the evidence led him, and stuck to it. Proud to call him a trusted friend now, all these years later. He's a good guy.
That’s the best type of guy - having an initial opinion and then changing it when new evidence is brought to the table is SO rare nowadays. People are usually just like “um actually you’re wrong” no matter how many facts there are 💀 props to him!
At my - at the time - small local gliding club, I was the first to crack 20,000 feet and 580km cross country (on the same day, thanks to favourable wave lift). I landed to a very warm welcome from my friends who took pictures of me and bought my drinks that evening. That was on Saturday. The next day, a 19 year old lad made even better use of the wave lift and broke my "record" by over 2,000 feet and 40km. I already knew he'd knocked me off the "top spot" from our radio operator, but when he landed, he told his friends - the younger members - not to brag or even tell me about his win. I gave him a hug, congratulated him and bought his drinks that evening. There will always be someone better at something we do. It's how they - and we - behave when that happens that really speaks to who we are. Billy has a lot of growing up to do...and for someone his age, that's deeply concerning. Of all things to sue people over...a fucking computer game score? Really? He clearly doesn't have good people in his life because if he did, they would tell him to "get a grip" and stop behaving like a petulant child.
Billy here. Once I find my pocket square, so I can go to the store and replenish my beard and -shoe- hair polish, I'm going directly to my lawyers to sue you.
He looks like he would be running a shady DoJo in a strip mall where new members have to sign a waiver acknowledging they're bodies will legally be considered deadly weapons in the eyes of the law... 😮
If you ever feel like you wasted your life, just remember, Billy Mitchel has spent at least 20 years of his trying to lie about a high score in donkey kong.
@@intercoursehandguns851 Being remembered for pathologically lying isnt a good thing... Your next generation will be embarrassed of you and it could affect their life. You have the same mindset of Billy Mitchell... which could be beneficial if you spent the same amount of time practicing as he did lying.

You share common mindset of psychopaths if you think lying will get you where you want. Billy is losing all his reputation right now and its funny to watch. It all goes down-hill from here for once your lie is revealed.
Imagine if Billy Mitchell congratulated Steve, celebrated him as a man who beat his high score, and then used that as an event to promote his arcade and hot sauce. "I may not be the King of Kong anymore, but I'm the king of hot sauce!"
You should work as a pr representative 😂 that would of been a perfect response! No king rules forever. But if that happened we wouldn't of got that amazing documentary
The King of 'Cade. Yeah, that would've been the smart move. Then host his own tournaments and hosting the new King of Kong. Sounds like a much cooler alternative reality
"You want to watch the new blockbuster movie, it's over 3 hours long?" - Nah "You want to watch the new Billy Mitchell documentary showing his lies & worst moments, it's over 3 hours?" - Hell yeah! Great documentary. Very detailed & was entertained throughout. Keep it up.
You are a classic victim of glory hole action. Thinking there's a supermodel on the other side of the hole, while irl there's a 80 yo guy taking out his dentures and do the job you crave so much. Enjoy the show.
Billy’s lawyer losing his mind at the end of the video was pure entertainment gold. That’s a lawyer who 100% knows Billy is lying and is doing everything in his power to mitigate the damages that’s coming to him and Billy. He made his bed. Now he has to sleep in it.
If it was anyone but Billy I'd feel bad for him at that part. Any time he says literally anything except yes or no his lawyer is berating him lol. I get that he wants to get it done faster but like is it really that big of a problem if his answer is like five words long instead just one?
@@jacob9538 the lawyer saying to shut up so it gets done faster is his tactful "on camera" way of telling Billy to shut up before he says something that can incriminate himself. Honestly, the will power for his lawyer to resist strangling him is more impressive than anything. I also wanted to mention that I've seen a lot of stuff regarding this topic, so I was debating watching 4 more hours wondering what new information I would get, but most of it was new stuff, actually. Not only that, but the end was so entertaining and funny that it was worth the 4 hours leading up to it.
@@jacob9538 because billy is a pathological liar, and keeps presenting statements and information not asked by the lawyers. That's how he ended up perjuring himself multiple times.
Imagine someone telling a convention they're going to bowl a 300 game. They get 11 strikes in a row, then on the 12th ball, they leave a 7-10 split. Imagine the audacity that person would have to have to turn around and scream "PERFECT GAME!" then soak in the cheers. NOW FURTHER IMAGINE that people who witnessed that double down on the fact they saw a perfect bowling game in the face of all the evidence that they saw a 298 game.
I initially hated the Broken Token guys (and still do, a bit) for just refusing to look at the evidence while defending Billy, claiming that they weren't, and calling David Race militant, but on some level I do feel bad for them. In their email response to Veritas, they were clearly scared to discuss it further because of how litigious Billy is, and it just wasn't worth it to them to get embroiled in that. It's insane how the guy has used the legal system to bully people into silence. Even if nothing else was true, that would be enough for me to hate Billy.
The fact he sat there under oath and lied about carlos... And then told the truth about carlos at the end makes no since to me. Why fabricate evidence if you snitch on your self? What a dummy
It reminds me of other noteworthy figures in life but this is such a wholesome comment section I'll keep my Pandora's-box thoughts to myself 🤗 good for Carlos for having integrity.
Just want everyone to know that Billy’s portrait, displayed worshipfully at the entrance of Funspot, I’m thinking for decades, has been quietly taken down . Funspot is the New Hampshire arcade where much of King of Kong was filmed. Funspot had honored him forever as player of the century, or world record holder, or whatever. No more. In fact, I saw no evidence of Billy Mitchell’s existence anywhere at Funspot.
"so that pac-man performance wasn't a perfect score?" "(truncated) no" "did you tell the crowd it was a perfect score?" "i told the camera that it was." "ok, was that untrue?" "was what untrue?" _fuck_ dude
Billy calling Carlos dishonest is such a scumbag move. That's like pretending to love a woman until she stops paying for your drugs, then leaving her in the middle of the night and telling everyone she was unfaithful.
@@OverlordMoses Yeah, I had to account for Carlos putting his reputation on the line as the partner of a heavy drug user might. I had to account for Carlos refusing to lie for Billy once he learned the truth, which was represented by the partner ceasing to enable her significant other's addiction. I represented Billy pretending Carlos was a random fanboy who never worked to help Billy with the partner being kicked out of the house even though she did nothing wrong. Finally, I used the false allegation of infidelity to symbolize Billy saying Carlos was dishonest during his deposition. It was the only believable example I could think of that included every aspect of the betrayal. I guess I could have done something about an employee and their boss, but it would have been just as specific in order to account for every aspect of the situation.
I mean...it's not difficult. Triforce left a big-rig sized hole for literally anyone to completely shatter his 'proof'. Listening to him talk about how an emulator works physically hurt...and then he goes and claims no experts have come forward......Dude....listen to what you just said....no expert *has* to come forward.....
"Edit that out because I don't swear" just sums up Billy perfectly. I can't believe he actually did that on video. Dude has negative levels of self awareness.
Reminds me of the 2nd season of HBOs “last chance U”. The coach literally made fun of a concussed player for not playing (among dozens of other things) but he believed he looked bad for swearing too much.
@@Jabadamazo hey man why do i recognize the specific name "Jabadamazo" is it from anywhere? i feel like it was in a really stupid youtube video that i watched several years ago
The ending is hilarious. Billy's complete and utter inability to *_JUST ANSWER THE SPECIFIC QUESTION POSED, IN A SHORT "YES" OR "NO" MANNER_* , - without comment or speculation - despite being told to do so repeatedly is stunning.
To be fair, I don't think I'd be able to do that either 😅 ...at least, not if I was truly convinced I was telling the truth. If I was actively lying, then I'd probably be better at giving pointed answers then shutting up 😬
@@HalcyonSerenadeThis is a lawyers worst nightmare. 😂 Clients who won’t listen and won’t shut up. They give up so much information to the other side and screw their own case in the process. People under the age of like 30 will never understand the existence of these types of people 😂. I miss the pre internet world where mysteries still existed.
@@DonMega888 That's exactly what i was thinking. there was a time where ti was borderline impossible to fact check people to this degree. Billy is a relic of that time. He's like if a belt holster for a cell phone was a man.
As a software engineer who worked a lot with video compression, cameras, understanding how rolling shutters, sensors and all of this stuff works I can sign under whole explanation Veritas gave. Incredible work have been done here to explain it visually and easy. Thank you. This videos deserve much more than a single like.
I just want to take an aside to thank Carlos, not just for the work he did which is great, but when presented with evidence that the people who hired him were lying, he actually listened and changed his perspectives. He didn't just go into ego defense mode like so many others do. That is the sign of a mature person.
And he admitted it as his own failure too, not _just_ him being a victim of the lies. I mean, he _was_ indeed a victim of the con, but he's also owning up to that he was taking the honesty for granted rather than fact-checking sooner than he did. It says a lot about a person's character when they not only admit to being wrong, but also admit that they _could've_ done something different to correct their mistake sooner. That's a lot to admit to, and he's a champ for doing so on such a hot topic (at least, a hot topic in this relatively niche corner of the internet).
shout out to carlos; it takes a lot of guts to accept that you got scammed and tell people about it. a lot. that was humiliating and i'm proud of carlos for saying, 'wait, tf?' and questioning his assumptions. you did it right my guy.
the more you lie the more you have to cover up the lies that has beenexposed, and Billy has lied for years so he should run for president, hes got all the credentials!
Well Jobst promised he will take his case to court at all cost, so yeah this is not over, since the basis for that lawsuit still is: did he cheat or not
I LOVE his argument about the room camera vs filming directly for a "movie". I can speak on this directly. I have a movie too. At no point did we ever use a direct feed to capture "better video" for the movie. We used many cameras, and even cell phone footage... and it was high enough quality. And then his argument about not having "original footage" and putting the onus on TG themselves... I have MY ORIGINAL record footage. All of it. That's on Billy man. There's zero record for the player to NOT have the original record submission footage.
@@jemlesvideoI don't think it's been uploaded yet and may never be fully available...but typically the lawyers doing the deposition have full rights to do what they want with the recording so Twin Galaxies owns the video deposition and they have shared it with others like Karl Jobst...
There's only one possibility that Billy is innocent that occurs to me, knowing how a bunch of different video stuff works. The literal only possibility for him is if all of his gameplay was recorded using a direct capture device that was designed to only out put full frames. In this case meaning that it buffers the entire frame and then sends that out as video. If Billy had a custom video capture device commissioned from someone it's possible that they could have made a device that did this a couple of ways. One of which could be by cannibalizing the ADC from an LCD display of the time. I would need to see what the original Donkey Kong from the arcade cabinet looks like when someone did something blasphemous like putting an LCD into the arcade cabinet instead of a CRT. Something that no one would do today with the knowledge of how LCD's and CRT's mechanically differ, but something that someone might have done in the early 2000's. Even in this scenario it doesn't guarantee that you'd get a result that looked the same as MAME output, but you would get something that at least slightly more closely resembled MAME than Arcade most likely
Whenever I see him calling himself "Video Gamer of the Century" I cant help it but think of him as the winner of the "First Annual Montgomery Burns Award for Outstanding Achievement in the Field of Excellence".
I've watched hours and hours of Billy "It's like landing on the moon." Mitchell content at this point in time. Not ONCE have I seen him sit down and actually play anything.
Well, if YOU could retire in your 30s like Brian Kuh and spend the rest of your life playing classic arcade games looking for kill screens, wouldn't you?!
Karl already had everything that was shown in this video. He's been sitting on a lot of evidence for years that hasn't been made public because of the ongoing legal issues.
The transition of Billy repeatedly swiping the screen to the right is gold. Haven't finished the video yet, but it's been worth the wait & managed to get me interested in a story I've never been invested in. Well done
I saw the King of Kong doc and really found it strange that the challenger was literally playing the game throughout the whole thing, while Billy is never even seen next to a machine, much less playing it. And when the mysterious video comes in to the arcade it is treated as the Ten Commandments by the one Billy-sycophant.
All hail Steve Weibe the official holder of the first title of King of Kong. May this sad sack of narcisism and ego be content with his title as King of Dong.
@@Healthy_Toki I mean, that’s kind of why he said holder of the “first” title of King of Kong. He sure is more deserving of that title than billy mitchell.
It is my belief that Billy Mitchell actually gets a thrill out of playing the villain in other peoples' life stories. One just has to watch The King of Kong to understand this about him.
Imagine getting a new world record in Donkey Kong (or any older game), only for a conman to send a tape moments later, claiming to have achieved a higher score - immediately cutting off your earned victory.

Billy Mitchell has been endlessly stacking lie on top of lie on top of lie for years and years, not to mention suing everyone who rightfully calls him out for being a cheating scoundrel and blatant liar... So although the stakes are incredibly low and the "reputation" he's trying to defend is totally forgettable and unimpressive, it needed to be done.
Even he’d admitted the Pac-Man score wasn’t perfect at the time, to the camera and the crowd, like “sorry, didn’t quite get it this time, but I was only 5000 short, maybe next time”… It still would’ve been a damned impressive score.
@@Apophis1010If you've ever watched The Regular Show, there's a [seemingly] one-off villain called Garrett Bobby Ferguson, or just GBF, for short; He appears as a floating disembodied head who is the "Universal Champion of [some video game in the show]", and when his high score is threatened he appears before the main characters and challenges them to a match of the arcade game, using trickery, underhanded tactics, disingenuous crying and blubbering about how his wife left him, the high score is the only thing that matters in his life anymore, etc. He has been compared to Billy Mitchell - even by Billy himself, who sued Cartoon Network shortly after the episode aired for using his likeness. The judge dismissed the case before it went to trial, stating, "Plaintiff's claims of use of his likeness are untrue, because Billy Mitchell is a Human being while the character is a disembodied, floating, bearded head."

Apollo didn't get the ball rolling, he just repeated the findings that others made to cash in on the whole thing and then got caught up in the mess. Don't get me wrong, it's unfortunate what happened to him but he in no way was crucial to taking down Billy. If anything, he only encouraged Billy to keep suing since Apollo settled the lawsuit against himself and had to pay Billy a lot of money which in turn made Billy think he can make anyone shut up and give him money, so long as he hit them with a lawsuit.
@@zacca6000 He got the ball rolling as far as youtube interest goes. He didn't just repeat what other videos said. He scoured the internet for all the data he could find to put it into his comprehensive video, which inevitably caught the attention of Billy Mitchell.

The video is called "The Downfall of Apollo Legend feat Billy Mitchell, Todd Rogers & DarkViperAU [RE-UPLOAD]" and the video is reuploaded on a different channel due to not being on EZScape's channel anymore but it goes through a lot about Apollo and how the speedrunning community really did not like him and it's around the 36 minute mark that EZScape goes over his personal issues with Apollo and how he would jump into a situation without knowing the full details or even repeating mistaken details that could of been corrected but he wanted the drama content. As for Billy, the information was going to come out about him no matter what, Apollo just happened to make a video at the right time and had enough information from other peoples content to make it sound like he knew what he was doing until he made assumptions with that information and had no backing to those assumptions, thus causing Billy to sue him.

Incredibly petty, considering what is at stake: It's a stupid Arcade high score!!! Others lose a years salary and walk away as if nothing happened.....
his lawyer is a lieing pos and should be disbarred but thats par for the course in teh courts... more often they promoted to judges rather then punished for lieing to the court
I really think Billy is some combination of delusional and a pathological liar. There's something wrong with someone his age who would act like that in a court setting.
Funny. I was just watching the video where Wiebe gets the WR, and Walter is on the phone asking BM if he's officially submitting his score. They're both trash.
I'm starting to get afraid that I'll have to make the scathing video about all the shady things he's done myself, but I don't know if I have the strength for such a task.
I couldn't stand that Billy-loving, sycophantic bastard ever since seeing him in King of Kong. God, what a vacuous, gaping asshole. Mostly because of how they shat all over Steve Wiebe, the most innocent, wholesome, standup guy in this whole thing.
Walter Day always looked so harmless and innocent in all docs I watched about Billy and Twin Galaxies. He struck me as a trusting and gullible fellow. But maybe he is not.
This all happened because Billy Mitchell was Twin Galaxie's puppet master and they let him manipulate scores and rules at will. Anyone, except Billy Mitchell, had to go through a lot of scrutiny and very extreme rules to present evidence of a Donkey Kong score, but Billy Mitchell just needed to send a tape of game play without him showing his face and it was accepted immediately. It was pathetic.

I can't watch any of this without feeling like my 9-yr-old self desperately lying to explain why my homework wasn't done, then having to lie again and again as each of the previous lies unraveled. I would say anything to get out of the situation. But, in my defense, I WAS NINE YEARS OLD. At some point, you have to become an adult and realize that the mental exhaustion just isn't worth it. If you don't, then your whole life becomes the lie. Why? To prop up a fake achievement in a video game?
I don’t even care about retro games. I watch speed running documentaries with the same fascination that I watch body builders. These people achieved something very difficult but to me completely meaningless. Im so impressed with the technical know how and diligence it takes to make a video such as this. I hope this will get more views. The intro was also genuinely funny and well done.
You know what's really the worst part about this for Billy? Despite the dishonesty, he is actually sick at DK But he will never get even that recognition now
Like others have mentioned, that's what makes the Barry Bonds analogy so solid. Bonds was going to be an all-time great no matter what, but he had to be temporarily at the top of the mountain no matter the cost to his reputation.
Many of the most notorious cheaters in speedrunning are people that are legitimately good at the game they play, but also extremely proud individuals that want to stay at the top no matter what.
The idea that Billy could ever have the GWR for the Donkey Kong highest score is simply silly. We all know Tommy Tallarico is the one who holds that honor. He's done everything!
I'm glad to see I'm not the only one to whom RUclips recommended this video after a binge watch of all of Hbomberguys videos. Tommy Tallaricos mother must be very proud of him indeed.
I really appreciate the amount of effort you put into this video. The amount of people who cover this story and just say "this one frame proves billy cheated" without covering what that frame means, how it was produced, why that differs from genuine arcade hardware, and how it being played on mame invalidates his record is, while reasonable, responsible for this story becoming very oversimplified. This was simultaneously very rigorous proof, but also genuinely educational. I also appreciate that you clarified Mameplay™is not necessarily dishonest or proof of cheating, as long as it is presented upfront with the required files it is a completely honest field of competition. Mame is the main way most people these days are gonna have access to arcade Donkey Kong, and while inaccuracies pop up, mame is, almost to a fault, completely devoted to the pursuit of accuracy over playability. Mame devs will straight up refuse hacky or high level emulation solutions to performance issues simply to preserve accuracy. This is rare in the emulation space, where most emulators would prioritize performance and playability, and focus on accuracy issues only once they present an obstacle to this playability. Great stuff. Replicating other people's findings is something more people should do when covering stories like this.
Yes. This video breaks down almost every piece of the puzzle. The statements Billy has made have been dissected and analyzed to point out the areas of manipulation piece by piece. Really really great video.
Yeah, and just the fact that Mitchell lies about using it is bizarre. Hell, everything about him is bizarre and off-putting. I love the video, Veritas. I do want to note, though, the way Billy's voice was recorded in the panel you were using to address the process of lying that he uses was really hard to listen to. I dunno if the sound guy for that panel just really wanted every mouth noise imaginable to be used, or if Billy just doesn't know how to use a microphone, but it triggered my misophonia.

Karl Jobst and any other Billy Mitchell Lawsuiters can just present this video as evidence for their cases and all of Billy’s bullshit would be over. This is one of the most professional and well put together videos on this Billy Mitchell cheating topic that I’ve ever seen. After seeing the original MAIM footage years ago, I was about 80% sure Billy was a cheat. This video slams the door on any chance that Billy Mitchell is innocent in my mind. The only thing this amazing documentary is missing is a mention that there is a yearly donkey kong competition, and billy only entered once, and made last place, never to enter a live arcade tournament with actual competition before or since.

I think he's super important in this story and the story of video games in general. His genuiness somewhat broke Billy and caused Billy to show his true narcissistic self
I've been following the billy mitchell drama since Summoning Salt did a world record progression of Donkey Kong, and then over at Apollo Legend's "10 speedrunners who were caught cheating", and of course the Karl Jobst drama. You've done an AMAZING job here summarizing the entire story, and made the complicated hardware issues understandable. I will never forget how Billy aggressively pushed a young man to suicide, then laughed about his death. Was he solely responsible? No. Apollo had a habit of forcing himself into drama that he didn't have the mental fortitude to deal with the blowback over, and he had significant health issues...but a million dollar lawsuit did not help matters...and him not being SOLELY responsible does not justify how happy he was over it.

Hey Tim, the legend himself, well said! Couldn't agree more!

It is a DarkSydePhil level of argument from Billy. "I said it, trust me and other are just detractors, dood!"

Even he’d admitted the Pac-Man score wasn’t perfect at the time, to the camera and the crowd, like “sorry, didn’t quite get it this time, but I was only 5000 short, maybe next time”… It still would’ve been a damned impressive score.

I love watching Billy Mitchell related content because he’s a literal cartoon supervillain.
Is a cartoon made with him somewhere?

RIP Apollo Legend, the OG youtuber who got the ball rolling in exposing Billy Mitchell.
I believe one could make a cogent case that Billy holds some distinct responsibility for Apollo's death.
@@EmeraldLavigneApollo had a lot of issues though. Of course Billy was part of it but it isn’t entirely on him.
@@dlancer2kEZScape had a video on Apollo and his methods. He makes it clear Apollo used his and others work and garnered himself attention for it and acted like he did everyone a favor, when he didn't. If Apollo was actually careful with the information he had, he wouldn't of had to deal with Billy at all but he wanted to jump in on a subject that was still hot and paid the price for it.
The story of Billy Mitchell is of a guy, a gamer, who was really good, got recognized for being really good (sometimes recognized for being the best) and then decided he wanted to remain the best for the rest of his life no matter what. He’s also like a borderline sociopath
And that’s being generous for what he’s done
it's hard to even think about billy with a straight face without turning red in anger when you think about how he laughed and made fun of apollo legend "doing the deed" (you know what i mean... thanks youtube). it's also fairly obvious that billy mitchell is a good chunk of the reason why it happened in the first place, even if billy threatened apollo's family into saying otherwise. dude is one of the most evil people that has ever existed, and it's great that he's finally been exposed for being such a disgusting degenerate loser
And the way he's gone about doing that, rather than put in the hard work of practicing hours a day, is to bully, harass and lie for years. Fuck him
I agree with everything you said, except I'm pretty sure he crossed over that border quite a while ago.
Incredibly petty, considering what is at stake:
It's a stupid Arcade high score!!!
Others lose a years salary and walk away as if nothing happened.....
Listening to Billy's lawyer lose his will to live is somehow the saddest and most satisfying part of this video
"Just answer the question....."

"no commentary or its going to take longer than it needs to take."
his lawyer is a lieing pos and should be disbarred but thats par for the course in teh courts... more often they promoted to judges rather then punished for lieing to the court
I really think Billy is some combination of delusional and a pathological liar. There's something wrong with someone his age who would act like that in a court setting.
I find it amazing that Walter Day escaped much of the scrutiny and with reputation intact. He was a full participant in the conspiracy.
Mostly because of how they shat all over Steve Wiebe, the most innocent, wholesome, standup guy in this whole thing.
figured that was why in Wreck it Ralph, his name is mr litwick, not day
Walter Day always looked so harmless and innocent in all docs I watched about Billy and Twin Galaxies.
Wasn't he effectively a co-owner during those days?
@@kenon6968 more reason to follow the rules and lead by example, instead he added a layer of conflict of interest and manipulated poor Walter Day to do whatever he pleased.

Despite the dishonesty, he is actually sick at DK

@@embyrr922well played, guys!
