This is a point of contention when people watch the King of Kong documentary. Even with the production team and people behind the filming not liking Mitchell at all and editing it so it would portray him in a bad light, when you look at how Billy acts outside of that, you question if they even had to do anything to accomplish that.

I'll also comment on Carlos Piniero. I believe he had the best of intentions when he stepped into the mess. We "bumped heads" a little at the beginning... we were on opposite sides of the coin at that time... but props to Carlos. He did the work. He tried to replicate what Billy had done. He finally came to the conclusion everyone else had. And admitted it. Publicly. And Team Billy turned on him. Carlos has integrity. He stood his ground, he didn't cave in. He went where the evidence led him, and stuck to it. Proud to call him a trusted friend now, all these years later. He's a good guy.

At my - at the time - small local gliding club, I was the first to crack 20,000 feet and 580km cross country (on the same day, thanks to favourable wave lift). I landed to a very warm welcome from my friends who took pictures of me and bought my drinks that evening. That was on Saturday. The next day, a 19 year old lad made even better use of the wave lift and broke my "record" by over 2,000 feet and 40km. I already knew he'd knocked me off the "top spot" from our radio operator, but when he landed, he told his friends - the younger members - not to brag or even tell me about his win. I gave him a hug, congratulated him and bought his drinks that evening.
There will always be someone better at something we do. It's how they - and we - behave when that happens that really speaks to who we are.
Billy has a lot of growing up to do...and for someone his age, that's deeply concerning. Of all things to sue people over...a fucking computer game score? Really? He clearly doesn't have good people in his life because if he did, they would tell him to "get a grip" and stop behaving like a petulant child.

There's only one possibility that Billy is innocent that occurs to me, knowing how a bunch of different video stuff works. The literal only possibility for him is if all of his gameplay was recorded using a direct capture device that was designed to only out put full frames. In this case meaning that it buffers the entire frame and then sends that out as video. If Billy had a custom video capture device commissioned from someone it's possible that they could have made a device that did this a couple of ways. One of which could be by cannibalizing the ADC from an LCD display of the time. I would need to see what the original Donkey Kong from the arcade cabinet looks like when someone did something blasphemous like putting an LCD into the arcade cabinet instead of a CRT. Something that no one would do today with the knowledge of how LCD's and CRT's mechanically differ, but something that someone might have done in the early 2000's.
Even in this scenario it doesn't guarantee that you'd get a result that looked the same as MAME output, but you would get something that at least slightly more closely resembled MAME than Arcade most likely

@@dlancer2kEZScape had a video on Apollo and his methods. He makes it clear Apollo used his and others work and garnered himself attention for it and acted like he did everyone a favor, when he didn't. If Apollo was actually careful with the information he had, he wouldn't of had to deal with Billy at all but he wanted to jump in on a subject that was still hot and paid the price for it. The video is called "The Downfall of Apollo Legend feat Billy Mitchell, Todd Rogers & DarkViperAU [RE-UPLOAD]" and the video is reuploaded on a different channel due to not being on EZScape's channel anymore but it goes through a lot about Apollo and how the speedrunning community really did not like him and it's around the 36 minute mark that EZScape goes over his personal issues with Apollo and how he would jump into a situation without knowing the full details or even repeating mistaken details that could of been corrected but he wanted the drama content. As for Billy, the information was going to come out about him no matter what, Apollo just happened to make a video at the right time and had enough information from other peoples content to make it sound like he knew what he was doing until he made assumptions with that information and had no backing to those assumptions, thus causing Billy to sue him.

I really appreciate the amount of effort you put into this video. The amount of people who cover this story and just say "this one frame proves billy cheated" without covering what that frame means, how it was produced, why that differs from genuine arcade hardware, and how it being played on mame invalidates his record is, while reasonable, responsible for this story becoming very oversimplified. This was simultaneously very rigorous proof, but also genuinely educational. I also appreciate that you clarified Mameplay™is not necessarily dishonest or proof of cheating, as long as it is presented upfront with the required files it is a completely honest field of competition. Mame is the main way most people these days are gonna have access to arcade Donkey Kong, and while inaccuracies pop up, mame is, almost to a fault, completely devoted to the pursuit of accuracy over playability. Mame devs will straight up refuse hacky or high level emulation solutions to performance issues simply to preserve accuracy. This is rare in the emulation space, where most emulators would prioritize performance and playability, and focus on accuracy issues only once they present an obstacle to this playability. Great stuff. Replicating other people's findings is something more people should do when covering stories like this.

I've been following the billy mitchell drama since Summoning Salt did a world record progression of Donkey Kong, and then over at Apollo Legend's "10 speedrunners who were caught cheating", and of course the Karl Jobst drama.
You've done an AMAZING job here summarizing the entire story, and made the complicated hardware issues understandable.
I will never forget how Billy aggressively pushed a young man to suicide, then laughed about his death. Was he solely responsible? No. Apollo had a habit of forcing himself into drama that he didn't have the mental fortitude to deal with the blowback over, and he had significant health issues...but a million dollar lawsuit did not help matters...and him not being SOLELY responsible does not justify how happy he was over it.
