  • We’re accustomed to 24/7 connectivity - which is great most of the time but we all reach a point where we’re saturated by information and noise. That’s when you need a digital detox - and this week Kriya shows how to get off-line and back on track - in and around Nungwi in Zanzibar...

I lived on Zanzibar 50 years ago and worked on a new Airport Terminal building plus a slipway from the town into the harbour. I am transported by this young ladies presentation and enthusiasm. It is good to see that the local people are as I remember them. They were friendly and scrupulously honest. When My young bride came out to join me from England I had no qualms about an old Arab Gentleman showing her around the town whilst I was at work. They were Halcyon Days. I need to go back.

I was born in Zanzibar in December 1946. In 1963, I met Farouk Balsara (Freddy Mercury) when his mother brought him to my school, the Hindoo Union Secondary School (Shangani School) to be introduced to the class room. As it happened there was only one place left unoccupied, my other half of the desk. Hence I shared the same desk with Farouk for nearly a year. He had been sent to India at an early age to study and had just returned to Zanzibar in 1963.
He was a great guy, always talking big to the annoyance of most of the other students. There are quite a few things I remember about him, the most vivid was, "There are only two things wrong with me, my buck teeth which I need to straighten out and my name, after that I will be alright".
True to his word, that is what he did and the rest is history. Shame he died too young.
