Is SBMM Good or Bad for Warzone? (My Opinion)

  • A couple days ago, I shared the results of a test I did which proved to a reasonable degree of certainty that Skill Based Matchmaking (SBMM) is being used for Warzone, despite the devs stating that it wouldn't be. Today I wanted to dive deep into my opinion on this implementation and whether or not it impacts my view on the battle royale mode.

My guess is that IW told information that was given them at the time. ATVI probably changed their minds and forced SBMM as it is better for busines (as casual/avg. players are much bigger audience than above avg. players that usually are vocal in communites)

Little twelve year olds will rage but never put the game down. I was twelve once, I remember. But I'm playing warzone less and less because SBMM makes it less fun. This coupled with the realization that the battle pass has become nearly impossible to finish without spending real money (the difference in level progression from season 0 to season 1 should have been a clue) is basically enough for me. At my level of play, 2-3 hours of daily play all season should be more than enough to hit max level and finish the pass without buying tiers (it's not).

    Fantastic video. Entirely agree.
A protected bracket (for say kd < 0.7 or first 100 games) is very reasonable. I don't want to fight people that don't know how to shoot their gun.
Currently there is disincentive to becoming better at the game. Usually, if you practice, you get better and perform better. I'm hard locked at a 2.2 and 12% win rate because I either play solos or we duo queue in top tier lobbies.
Also, when our sub 1kd players want to play, they can't even get damage on players in some lobbies. The skill gap is just so vast. One guy has already said he won't play with us again. He immediately went and won a solo game in his own lobbies.
They absolutely MUST ditch SBMM for the non protected group. It will kill the hype for the game.

You basically nailed my biggest gripe with SBMM when discussing that it takes away a player’s ability to really see how they are progressing in the game. I’ve had a great time playing MW and I would say I’m an above average player but not by leaps and bounds. My lobbies, atleast in multiplayer, have seemed to even out but I was that player who was getting tossed back and forth between skill brackets. That’s been my biggest frustration with this game. I’m all for a protected bracket and even some sort of protection for players slightly above that if necessary; Overall though it should just be a random distribution of players based on connection for all the reasons you mentioned. It gives incentive to improve and to be able to see the benefits of improving over time.

    • @anthonyjoseph7521

ahastar1141 I understand what you mean and in reality it makes sense. Unfortunately it appears MW is only using your recent performance to judge lobbies; That being the case it often bumps you back and forth between skill tiers with a ranking system you can’t see. It would be like lifting weights and not only randomly changing the weight without you knowing but also not telling you how much weight you’re lifting. A far better system would be to use your lifetime stats along with some sort of rank that a player can track if SBMM is going to be used.

I have , and still do, hate the SBMM in the smaller modes before Warzone came out. But I am for a LIGHT version of it IF the SBMM comes in second to matching based on connection /location. I have noticed that a LOT of the games I have been playing BR where the lag is so bad that I am teleporting and half the lobby quits out. I think this is because they are prioritizing SBMM over ping.
In the smaller modes when I get in a really tight SBMM game where everything is back and forth that most of the time there are multiple players with a 100-200+ ping. In the smaller modes it DOES NOT BELONG and is wayyy too tuned in. As long as they keep it light and make connection a priority then I am cool with this one.

First off all.. I also completely agree that there needs to be a protected bracket for new/below average players ( unfortunately I don't see it as being possible tho) people are still going to abuse the SBMM and take advantage of it, it's a software algorithm that is 90% flaws and cannot judge like a human, it's a computer, that is why it will never work.
Before ExclusiveAce made the video about confirming SBMM I will admit I was closed minded and was against SBMM 100% in any FPS game THAT IS NOT COMPETITIVE PLAY, but on his previous video someone commentated that their father is older has a disability that puts him at a handicap and the person explained that his father used to play video game when he was younger, he recently started playing and he loved the fact that his father was having fun (Even tho he was at a handicap, all thanks to SBMM) it really opened my eyes because I never experienced the lower bracket lobbies with these type of players. ( I like to think of my self way above the average player in gaming, no where near pro, but higher than the average player) and my lobbies I never got anyone that played like the dude in this video...
The algorithm is so flawed and pathetic that a single win will drastically increase a players MMR.... It's gotten to the point where I don't even go for wins anymore I only go for high kill games. I drop hot zones and just contest every fight I can. I get kills on average of up to 16-25(with randoms) in mid game and just keep playing aggressive till I die and i repeat it again.
When I played for wins and get wins I would always get put in higher ranking matches, but in those matches it was filled with hackers and it still is. Which makes the game completely unplayable. It reminds me of how pathetic Activision/ IW is that they are not willing to spend money on new servers and a Anti-cheat system ....
They need to publicly add a VISIBLE MMR so that players can see where they rank and INCLUDE INCENTIVES FOR PROGRESSING TO HIGHER TIERS... so that way players keep playing to progress and feel rewarded for playing against the sweaty wannabe MLG players who camp on the end of the circle in a corner house not moving . It has to be an item, for god sakes not a reward that only gives you XP.. Who ever thought about giving XP for rewards even after you're maxed level should be demoted.....

  • @mitmon_8538
    @mitmon_8538 4 года назад +5

I think I've experienced the bouncing back and forth being a slightly below average player in Warzone. In one day of playing a lot, I'll go from being top 15 in my lobbies to either getting melted/lazered or outplayed at around 70th place. There was one comical beginning to a game where I had all my shots zeroed in on their head when they came around a corner. But after I died and watched the kill cam, I was way behind them; so to me, that was connection issue.
I'm not fully on board with only having protected bracket and then no SBMM after that. That would mean the same top 5% skilled players would win every single match. Is it wrong to want a win, even if it's against people who are just around my skill level? I will never get as good as the top 5%, or even the top 15%, so I would be turned off if was completely out of the realm of possibility.

Ace, I'm so thankful for you explaining all of the in depth detail to us. It's disappointing to hear that they blatantly lied to us and further more made us always question our skill set as they don't just show us a skill rank. I would consider myself at that slightly above average warzone player (1.15 k/d and 170 s/m; warzone stats only) where every other game I'm questioning either how I can't get a kill or how I just pulled off a 1v3. I really wish they instilled a ranked playlist so I could either play competitive and possibly reserved and go purely for wins or play casual and just a have a beverage and have some fun with my friends. Unfortunately, it seems like most of the time I pull my friends up to my skill rank and we have to go all out just to survive the first two circles. The idea of a controlled beginner lobby makes the most sense to me as it would help them retain their target audience of younger new players who will want to get better and buy new CODs as they come out.
Either way end of rant #1.
Start rant#2: I still can't believe they won't invite you out to early access events. You've been loyal to COD for years and are one of the few who have continuously posted COD content even through the hate it's received in years past. Plus the fact that you data test and play test all updates to let us know what the patch notes refuse to tell the general public should speak for itself. I know Activision has COD partners and they get first priority but not only should you be a COD partner but they should be begging for you to come to early access events and post on the what they want to promote. The fact that they don't leads me to believe they are the smartest business people.

I think streamers and content creators like putting out good game plays, but with the illusion of playing fairly relaxed and casual. It works the same in reverse, where if you were to use, say, just a pistol, you'll get matched with players who perform at the same level while they use normal or even OP/meta weapons (meaning worse and much worse players).

IMO it's okay to have a low skill bracket where really unskilled players don't have to be put in teams of much more skilled players, which is terrible in 6v6 where teammates matter. However, matchmaking forcing win rate at 50% and KD at 1 as hard as it can for the entire playerbase (in MP) is pretty bad.

I don't think you know what objectively means, nor is what you are saying logical
SBMM is meant to group players of like skill together. This is a staple of any competitive game.

@@246trinitrotoluene Yes and in other games, you are told the level you are playing at. They will have ranked play and casual, casual will have mild SBMM to keep very low skilled, new players or those with an impairment out of main lobbies.
I am not against SBMM but the way it is implemented in MW is atrocious, the brackets are tiny, I am now joining 50% of my games mid-late match, I am getting put on servers outside of my home area so playing at a decent level is practically impossible sometimes.
The SBMM is hidden to allow match manipulation, people who spend a fortune on the game can be placed in lobbies where they are guaranteed to dominate, they will carry on spending, if they give these people an actual rank that reflects gameplay, telling them they are dogshit would cause an uproar. It's all about keeping people spending money.
Competitive play is great, but it is also nice to level up off-meta guns, do some challenges etc.. or play the game not at 100% where your brain feels like it is gonna melt every match.
In WZ it's even worse With SBMM as an average to slightly above average player there is no way to get better. When you suddenly do well, it's not due to improving but rather that your competition has become worse as the game has chucked you a bone and put you in a lower tier lobby. This cycles just continues and you just remain an average player yo yoing between brackets.

The protected bracket is a great idea. Such a good idea that Treyarch already implemented it 12 years ago with the Bootcamp playlist in WaW. Now they can just do it in the background with metrics more relevant than just player xp and let the people who are familiar with a controller enjoy variety in their matches. But they won't.

I would just like there to be an actual visible rank so you know where you stand in the match making

SBMM is the exact reason i quit going for the "dark matter" came for this game (I haven't played in a while so i don't remember the exact name)

It's Damascus, but honestly between sbmm and trash weapons it's not worth it. Not for me at least. The fun factor in this game is kinda low to begin with and grinding that hard for a pretty meh camo takes it into the negative. Just trying to level weapons that are trash takes it to near zero really and this is coming from someone who platinumed pistols in core

@@joetalley192 In order to find fun in using other weapons is to see them outside of the M4 and MP5. I find the best of them to be the RAM-7, PKM, MP7, AK-47 with 5.45, Bizon and Grau 5.56. However, that's difficult knowing of those weapons, so I can see how the fun factor is low for quite a handful of people.

It 100% definitely affects your connection, it takes me 3-4 minutes to get a match and its almost always a garbage unplayable connection. I was put down to high traffic times etc but after wiping a few times in a row the connection cleaned up and the even the stuttering stopped for a few matches.
