Sometimes I think Hailan didn't harm the child .. then again I think she did to spite the queen for framing Ruyi. Ruyi always said that the children are innocent victims & she didn't approve of harming the children. I love how Hailan evolved into quite a warrior at the end.

the original novel had 2-3 versions
-in the original version it was a pillow
-in the drama novelizations (ordered to reconcile the inconsistencies/differences between the drama and the original novel) it was indeed 3rd prince Yongzhang's cloth doll, and Hailan induced Lianxin to do the deed
also in the original novel, during the scene at Cold Palace, *Hailan and Ruyi were basically gloating at all the mourning noises*

*Hailan "promised" Su Luyun to burn the doll afterwards* (since there was another version of the novelization that 2nd prince Yong'lian played with the doll, basically making it "his" item, and the promised burning was also in keeping with Chinese funeral customs at that time that dictated the deceased's items be burnt for spiritual reasons), but for some reason *Hailan secretly kept the doll in her possession*
after the mess during Empress Xiaoxian (Langhua)'s funeral (first downfall of Su Luyun and her sons), Hailan secretly visited an unconscious Su Luyun. Upon waking up, *the first thing she saw was the cloth doll* , and upon screaming in fright and seeing Hailan *got into an argument with her* (part of their confrontation was in the official trailer showing their argument in front of Zhongcuimen Gate in the rain, but for some reason was cut off from the final product), asking Hailan why she reneged on her promise. *Hailan fired back on why she was backstabbing Ruyi by coveting the position of Empress Consort* , and afterwards Su Luyun came to her senses. Hailan then said to a sobbing Su Luyun *she should first find out the 6ıţčн responsible for her and her sons' downfall*

Yes, Empress, it's your fault. Not because Hailan was revenging Ruyi, but because due to your insecurities you overworked a weak little boy and committed what today would be called child abuse making him stand in the cold, weakening him further and triggering asthma which even today can be fatal. Your pride and desperation to advance your clan and ensure your son became the next Emperor caused you to try to turn him into a prodigy at the cost of his childhood. It cost him his health and his life as well.
Yes, Hailan somehow introduced the triggering pollen, but something would have gotten the poor boy sooner or later. If he'd gotten over this episode the Empress would have had him back at the grindstone as soon as possible, repeat until fatal.
    Spoiler alert
The Empress' insecurities caused her to commit so many sins! Starting with the contraceptive bracelets for her main rivals Hui and Ruyi, the cinnabar poisoning removed two other heirs that could have competed with her son (as well as love rival Yu). She went on to promoting A'rou who is a horrible person, masterminding multiple murder attempts because life imprisonment wasn't good enough for her rival, and manipulations for power that included throwing her most loyal servant under the bus and into a forced childless marriage with an abusive pervert.

The biggest hint is when lian xin commits suicide when the empress passes away. There's lots of guilt on her end.

This is why harems rarely worked. The backstabbing, murder (more of children, but also concubines & consorts) was ridiculously high and often kings/emperors would often set them against each other for fun, same with the children; if they didn't the other concubines/consorts did and the children grew up thinking this power hungry narcissism was normal and so continued it. It's a disgusting practice that, thankfully, has dwindled and is only rarely practiced now.

@@mushroommagic1697 - I'm sure down to the bottom of the food chain - especially when they had dozens, even hundreds or thousands of concubines - they were definitely peaceful and calm. But I think at the top, round the emperors it was much more fraught. Certainly when you read about Chinese Imperial history it's horrifying what they were willing to do to get on. From the mid range concubines, the higher up ones, the officials with daughters, outsider nobles sending their daughters into the Forbidden City with the hope of them becoming a favoured concubine....the scheming was horrible. I think I'd have preferred to be far down the pecking order and quietly living my life.😊
