  • Many Americans know something about the Navajo code talkers in World War II. But the strategy originated in World War I with members of the Choctaw, Oklahoma Cherokee, Comanche, Osage, and Sioux nations, as well as the Eastern Band of Cherokee and Ho-Chunk, whose veterans have yet to receive congressional recognition. Dr. Bill Meadows, historian and author of “The First Code Talkers: Native American Communicators in World War I,” will explore recent discoveries in research and delve into the post-war impact and popular myths of the first Code Talkers.

Fantastic work! I'm from Brazil - the Indian Protection Service was founded here in 1922 (if I'm not mistaken) by the Col. Cândido Rondon - he would die Field Marshall Rondon. There's an excellent American Experience episode on PBS called "Into the Amazon" about his trip with Theodore Roosevelt into the Amazon. Rondon himself was half Bororo indian and worked most of his life doing cartography, explorations and pulling telegraph wires throughout Brazil. Since he would often meet indigenous populations that had never met a "white" man, he developed methods of making first contact that are still used. There's also an English language biography of him by a former NYT journalist who now lives in Brazil. (I forgot his name)
The cultures of Brazilian indigenous people are somewhat different than those of North America probably because of the geography (I know it's quite a 19th century idea but ... well, I know it's more complex than that). I myself am part Tupi - something nearly 2/3 of Brazilians are, btw.

History buff from Holland here, I picked up years ago somethingthat I can't find real confirmation of when searching now. I somewhere read that the reason Code Talkers were used in Asia but not used in Europe in WWII was that Adolf Hitler as a former frontline soldier in WWI was aware of them and when preparing for war in the 30's had sent German linguists to the US to study and gather information about Native American languages. Is there information on this?
