The petricite armour turning from white to red as it becomes saturated with dragonfire would be a really good in-game indicator of how close Shyvana is to being able to use her ult again; like how you can see when Gnar's about to hulk out.
If Shyvana has 1000 fans, Jack is one of them. If Shyvana has one fan that is Jack. If Shyvana has no fans, Jack is unalive. For eternity, Jack will support SHYVANA.
If you are a real fan of Shyvana you would understand her human design has nothing wrong, this guy is not a shyvana fan, he is just a fucking retard wanting likes.
Subjectively and shyvana = Nickyboi and Cassiopeia. You both care immensely for these two champs and the design you create and he commissioned show that love
The way you’ve made her unapologetically proud of herself, particularly her body, really resonates with me. It kind of gives off a level of euphoria on Shyvana’s part? And the way you’ve turned the fairytale motif of dragon/damsel locked in a far-off tower on its head? Really clever! I’m a really big fan of your league work. Seeing characters I love reimagined a different way just fills me with a lot of joy! I hope you feel free to redesign other league characters in the future. Like, for example, I would love to see your take on an Anivia, LeBlanc, or Vladimir redesign!
Thank you! Anivia is definitely a champion I’d love to take a crack at. I’ve seen some really cool fan-ideas for an Anivia VGU and it makes me think about how much we’re missing with our current cryophoenix
Never and I mean NEVER apologize for talking about your dragon woman blorbo. I know very little about league (I am devoted to Fiddlesticks and Fiddlesticks only) and yet your videos talking about Shyvanna are some of my favorites. The love you have for the character is contagious!
Hi, I know this is a bit strange to ask since I don't even play lol anymore, but I loved fiddlesticks after the rework and I wanted to know if it was just me who didn't know how to use your scarecrows, like, do you have a smart way to use them? that one? For me, that was either used to scare someone into casting a spell or pretending to be a ward on a random lene, what's another good way to use them?
@@bolacha7645 his Effigies can be used to bait spells and if you play Support, you can plant one in lane and wait for the laners to kill it with R. Effigies also sweep vision, so he's VERY strong at vision control, as he needs it for his Terrify Passive.
I adore the idea of having Shyvana locked up in a tower until she goes Dragon Mode and breaks herself out. It's the classic tale of a princess in a tower, guarded by a dragon, who gets saved by a brave knight, but it turns all three (princess, dragon, knight) into one character. A woman loved by a prince but locked up for being a dragon frees herself with her dragon powers. Brilliant.
Said it last Shyvana video and I'll say it now: we can absolutely thank Karlach for bashing down the door and making everyone realize "Oh wait, no, we want a giant fire lady." I'm so glad tou didn't give up on her. *YOU* made me care about her, Jack! I'm so happy for you, and god I can't wait to see her
This VGU could make me download league again and play it for a week or two, hoping for the best. I'd bet 2 more cause the universe loves to prove me wrong, so we get her soon.
It's honestly kind of validating to see how many times you've revisited this project. I've been iterating on this one design for years, each time I get closer to what I think could be ideal but I always struggle with just how many things I need to balance, and after a little while and a couple more ideas it feels like I need to redesign it again. It's kind of nice to know that even artists who in my eyes have such consistently professional work also struggle with refining their designs to satisfaction.
I really like the feral, quadrupedal final dragon design - buuuuut I cannot lie, the more traditional 'wyvern' design you had right before that really tickles my brain, especially the head. I love the mane of spiky hair and the shapes of the jaw and head. I am just such a sucker for dragons haha. Lovely video! Also, this is far and away my favorite iteration of Shyvana's 'human' form. The hair and horns are fantastic, them hips don't lie but she's still clearly a big buff brawler, just really freaking good.
There's a lot more room for exploration with the dragon form, for sure. I think for my next redesign I'll start with the dragon and work backwards into the human form.
Reminds me somewhat of acner logia from fairy tail with his wild mane of hair in his human form but taking it into the dragon form gives the fierceness that otherwise wouldn't be there, I love it
I agree, something about the wyvern in general reads as a much quicker and more fierce creature. A large quadruped almost seems too bulky and slow to encapsulate the rage Shyvana holds
@@Subjectively If you want to look, I wrote a comment sharing some ideas and changes you could make to her dragon form to give the viewer the same wow feeling that her human form does. I love the redesign you did so much, and I think the dragon needs some finetuning before it matches the pure excellence of her lore and human form
fun fact for my fellow dragon enthusiasts, the whole wyvern vs dragon dichotomy isn't actually based in anything historical. even just within western folklore, draconic creatures with two legs and two wing-arm-things have been called dragons just as much as they've been called wyverns; and likewise for the six-limbed (aka four legs plus two wings) version. that being said, i think the modern distinction of wyverns having four limbs and dragons having six is widely accepted enough for it to be a helpful tool for talking about draconic creatures.
0:50 Quite the contrary, I love your Shyvana redesigns videos haha. They're actually one of my favourites of yours! I really enjoy seeing all the different ways you think of redesigning her ☺️I'm a freshman at uni now studying concept art for games and I'm not kidding when I say that your videos have been one of the main inspirations through my years for me to get to this focal point in life, so thank you!💕
We love to hear that! It might seem obsessive, but long-term projects like redesigning a video game character are great exercises for learning artists. Good luck at uni!
I love this, especially the changing of her loyalities, especially because it's something alot of people can relate, trying to force yourself into mold to be 'acceptable' for people whose opinions should never come before your right to simply exist and then breaking away from it to regain your agency and accept yourself for who you are.
After watching every Subjectively Shyvana VGU as they've come out for... what is it now, years? This has to be my favorite. I love the story continuation, and the attitude of this one. The confidence, the shapes, the surprising positivity in the face of primal, draconic rage. It's beautiful. Simply beautiful.
Don't forget, an exciting new opportunity for English speaking LPL fans to co-stream and cast LPL games themselves! Because they just fired the English LPL broadcasting staff...
There are parts of this I like more than your older redesign [i.e., Shyvana being a little less bulky in her humanoid form due to the lack of "armor", the lack of the white hair as a contrast is a little weird], but I like the dragon from the older design more as it retains a similar design to the already existing dragons within League gameplay/lore. I feel like if you could find a way to marry the two designs you've done of her, both the humanoid and dragon form, into one unified form it might be better suited.
Absolutely LOVE all of your Shyvanna redesigns, and they seem to only get better and better with each iteration. Found it astoundingly funny that some people really prefer Shyvanna to be a generic anime girl when everything showcases her as so much more Edit: LOVED what you did with the lore. Riot's constant constraints on the story made Mageseeker not really reach its biggest potential in terms of how it affected lore, so seeing actual consequences for the conflict and for Jarvan's character really made me appreciate that much more. Certainly had nothing to do with me being a Sylas main...
I love the new lore! It definitely fits her overall design as a red angry ball of vengeance. I personally love dramatic stories that push characters to emotional extremes. However, her push-up bra armor feels very jarring to me, like that's the kind of eye-candy design feature that Riot would have added a decade ago. Especially since one of her new main themes is freedom and being unshackled, yet the design is practically saying "a woman must have sex appeal", which to me feels very dissonant
There's definitely a balance to be struck there. I don't think sex appeal should be entirely dismissed in character design, so long as it's considered as part of the character's story. Shyvana, in her human form, is still bound. She's conforming, she's blending in as best she can. She's still wearing parts of the armor that imprisoned her, her wild hair is still in a tight braid, and the chains that once bound her still hang by her sides. It's not until she transforms into a dragon that she is truly free. I think, if this wasn't a video game character, her armor would be broken permanently after she transformed. However, because the character will reset back and forth between human and dragon form throughout the game, some liberties would be taken with continuity and she'd end up back in her armor again, kind of like how when Mundo ults and his straightjacket magically repairs itself. That said, I don't think your point is invalid. I imagine if you read the design as objectifying, others will too. It's definitely something to consider!
@@Subjectively Thank you for replying to my feedback! One of my friends and I are both game artists, and she recently told me her thoughts on sexualization in female character designs. This is especially noticeable in some genres like the fighting games I play, so I suppose I'm just vigilant about that sort of stuff. You make a sound point about how she's constrained by the armor. The most important part to me personally is that design decisions are made with proper intentions rather than simply making a character that looks attractive for the sake of it, so that's all good. Within her story there's definitely something interesting to be done with sexism and how women and their bodies are often regarded as something to take ownership of. I suppose that there are multiple ways to go about this, by either shying away from that sexualized design language or by leaning into it like you did. An alternative way of going about it could be to go more into her overall perception. For example, by adding lavish and fancy patterns to her clothing that the people of Demacia would have given her to make her look more presentable, but would not have cared for herself. On your point about the armor breaking, I think that's totally something that could be done! One of the most unique and interesting qualities about video games is how stories can be told through player actions. With this, even throughout a single match of League there's room for a character's story to unfold. Riot has done this before with champions or skins that change as you upgrade your abilities, but not to tell a narrative as far as I know. In Shyvana's case, her armor could partially break after going into dragon form for the first time, having her human form altered for the rest of the match. Even though she's not back to her true form for good, you'd see the shackles come undone in real-time. I think that would be a really nice way to our precious blue dragon lady be done justice
Kinda hope Arcane continues but with different LOL characters, maybe even a story about Shyvanna where she actually looks good, imagine how cool a dragon fight would be in the Arcane style, not even 1 but 2 if we follow her through her whole story!
Christian Linke (one of the writers) already confirmed that they're working on the next story after Arcane. The only thing we know, as of writing, is that it's not involving Piltover and Zaun.
After careful consideration, discussion with friends and other artists, I have these points to comment on this video. Fingers crossed someone from Riot sees this. First off, I adore everything about this design. The grizzled shape of Shyvana’s human form changes her from the cosplayer she was into a genuine fighter. Murder, savage predator, frightening anomaly, exactly the shape and design that indeed would frighten the local people. She has a human body that resembles her strength in lore, and for the first time the average person can read the intentions of the design near perfectly. Quite simply, the shape of her human form hits all marks. The elemental arms are fun, but I agree with your stated concern of them being difficult to balance and sustain through her skins, with similar struggles in the art department like our recent VGU strongman. Instead, I suggest a simpler change, such as the color of fire she spews during a taunt, or perhaps simply a particle effect would suffice for me. Roit needs to do something about the dragon souls in her character design, and though the arms are fantastic, realistically I and most people I have talked to agree that this goal would be a difficult achievement. Regardless, if that is the result of the VGU, I would shout for joy. Lastly, the dragon. The first design was fun. B+ is the harsh rating everyone gave. In a world where MTG and other art based games such as LOR go crazy with dragon designs, this was unoriginal, but a massive improvement from the thin legged chicken we have been forced to live with. However, the second design. A horrifying mutant, a raging dragon eater, truly the monster design Capcom would turn into an armor set. A+. The manticore body shape is a stark contrast to the other dragons in game, setting her apart from her dragon world in a way that isolates her. She is a brute, an executioner. The perfect hammer Demacia throws at its troubles, when it still could. I cannot state how happy I am with your design, and on behalf of the 20+ people I have excitedly shown this video too, you have done it. ❤
Holy moly, your thorough breakdown of my work is much appreciated! It would be cool if riot saw this, and saw how much input the rest of the community had on Shyvana’s VGU. Thanks for spreading this around!
I got GOOSEBUMPS with your modified lore, omg. Chills, I tell you. I think my favourite part has the be dragon form. I don't know how to explain it, but it has to do with the fact that it feels unique to her. Also, I wanted to say that I apreciate your Shyvana videos (and all league redesigns videos, tey even got me to make my own redesign of Shako lmao). Not only they help in my own creative process as a source of ideas and inspiration, but also in feeling confident in what I do. Is it perfect? Nope. Do I feel like I'm getting better? Hell yeah.
Shyvana was one of the first champions I played and I really love her so much. As someone who loves dragons and strong women, she quickly became one of my favorite characters. The power fantasy of turning into a giant dragon and slaying the enemy is just so cool. Seeing how you love her as a character and trying to push and explore her design always brings me joy! I will never miss a shivana redesign video
I really appreciate the respect you give to riot employees. The higher ups seem to make some questionable decisions, but there are so many talented individuals behind the maintenance of the game and world that most people never even consider.
It’s nice to know that there are people absolutely obsessed with a character for one reason or another. I’m obsessed with Ganondorf and I am constantly trying to build up the best design I can. Trying to embody themes and history in a character is rlly hard, and you do such a good job!
Fantastic work AS ALWAYS! ❤ Even if other people get sick of your Shyvana redesigns, I never do, lol. Your passion for her is clear as a blue sky and if I were riot I’d totally commission you to lead her rework if given half a chance, lol.
26:45 the "wyrm" design looks really interesting I think. Like I can imagine her attack animations alternately bashing with the maw, and stabbing with the tail like it's a grappling hook
You know... I think it's a credit to your eloquence and ability to express yourself that I sat through an 18 minutes long intro, and listened to all of it (yes, even the ad), without skipping a second. Considering how much videos these days try to grab our attention within seconds and how conditioned we are to skipping ahead or scrolling past anything that lasts more then a minute, it's amazing that you keep your channel as slow paced and relaxed, thank you for sticking to your guns and bringing us quality content
Okay first up, i LOVE this redesign, the more Eastern style dragon chestplate with the chains coming from its nostrils like plumes of smoke is SO cool and when i saw it among your rough i was mentally begging you to choose that one haha! However, in your in-game model design, the chains - which were my favourite part of it representing, as they do, the way she's been chained by society both metaphorically and physically and now she has broken then reincorporated them into who she is - kind of disappeared into the armour, they aren't defined they just look like yellow accents on the edge of the armour if ygm
i absolutely LOVE this redesign, HOWEVER! i wouldve liked her hair in the ingame concept (35:06) to be as dark as it is in the first concept, as it blends slightly with the skin and backround this is amazingly done, absolutely something id love to see as her actual rework lmao
Im A Sucker For A Narrative So I Just Had To Say I Love How You Used “Canon” Events To Inspire Her Extended Story As Well As The Inspiration It Seems To Take From The Real Life Concept Of “Good Ones” In Minorities And How People Sometimes Side With Oppressors Because They Dont Realize The Full Scope Of Hate Those People Obtain
This is my absolute favorite of your redesigns of Shyvana. She looks perfect. As soon as I saw that thumbnail I felt the presences of the exact person you've been describing to us all these years. She's perfect.
Had some fun ideas for voicelines: Smolder: wow! Another dragon! Hi Shvyanna: your not.. warry of me little one? Smolder: why should I, let's go burn them to the ground. Shvyanna: huh, the young are always so quick to action, even as a dragon. Jarvin: I just want you to know.. I do miss you. Shvyanna: just- focus on the battle. Leblanc: you know. I could help you with your goal. Shvyanna: and have more claws pulling me to the ground? Jarvins death, Shvyanna: I hope you know. I never wanted this. Shvyanna death lines- - You only free me from my form - father- I can see you- -my blaze will never go out
Oh boy! Time for an other long explanation of what VGUs are! I LOVE these redesign videos Jack, truly do, but holyyy, 15 minutes before getting to the redesign or even discussing your changes was *oof*
Ive been watching all your Shyvana redesigns and i love watching them and seeing how your rendering and character design improves over time. It also gives me a greater appreciation for league character designs as someone who has no plans to ever play League I now thanks to you and others like you have formed an opinion on basically every champion and their skins and now a list I keep of all my favorites that I still keep updated 😊
A great way to reveal Shyvana's VGU would be either in Arcane itself or as a short film set against the backdrop of that setting. Jarvin is visiting Piltover for official business - let's say some of the rampant abuse of magic tinkering in Zaun has made its way into Demacia, and he insists they put a stop to it - or he will. He is accompanied by his taciturn purple-skinned bodyguard, shadowing him at every step. While she draws the attention of pretty much everyone, she and Jarvin both completely ignore any attempt at interaction with her (aside from one or two death glares if someone comes too close to either of them). While the politicians are talking, Shyvana notices shady figures preparing for something (flash a dragon eye) and warns Jarvin. But before he can relocate without drawing too much attention, they attack. The first small-fries are no match for her and she dispatches of them as if taking out the trash. But then they bring out the big guns. Literally. However, once the dust from the explosive lifts, they notice that both of them hat been shielded by what looks like a giant wing - a realization that's interrupted by a second one unfurling from behind it, followed by a horned head, until Shyvana towers over everyone in her full draconic glory. Could work as a standalone short, or it could function as a C or D plot for an episode or two of the actual show, which adds some stakes and gets the plot rolling.
On the time frame detail that’s so important. I’m not in the industry yet but from what I’ve heard from riot people I’ve talked to the steps you’ve done in this video are a significantly truncated version of character design for a project that size. It’s a great video and design, just putting into perspective for anyone wondering.
ur VGU ideas are always interesting, and the visuals are awesome too! I hope one day I would have the skill to translate my ideas into paper, or digital, cause oh man do I have so many of them
I have played LoL exactly once and never made it past the tutorial. But I really enjoy all these Shyvana redesigns (including all the previous ones). I don't care about the official Shyvana, but I really like YOUR Shyvana(s)!
I think people who don't play league probably enjoy these videos more than people who actually do play league (that's because league players are miserable all the time)
I really love your ideas for a VGU. And I like how everything makes sense ! And her pre-VGU can still be canon ! Let me explain : when she was still in her egg, Shyvana's body morphed because of the researcher so it make sense for her body to be "malleable" and to change based on her environment. And her current model can easily be linked to her mindset at that time : grown with humans so her body is not very dragonic. Plus her dragon form is very thin and clunky because her dragon powers are suppressed by humans, but she can fly because she still hope for freedom and recognition. Now she's free and unleashed, scaping any sense of guilt and recognition by humans, making her more draconic and bigger as a dragon, but loose her flying capabilities because she lost hope in humanity. You can even link her keeping her braided hair with maybe a lingering affection for Jarvan that she can't scrape away. Anyway, I love the possibility for a 3 man fight between Demacia, Shyvana and Sylas with the other mages. It could lead to some epic lore and maybe the next animated serie after Arcane, who knows.
If Demacia got an Arcane style show that has Shyvana being a key player in the story like this, I'd sell my kidneys to fund it. I want this so damn bad bro
35:15 I think it would be better if her passive is: You deal 20% more damage to Dragons and you take 20% less damage (Her already existing passive, so she can kill the dragons early to gain soul sooner) But no additional armor or ability power, instead that after she gets soul, her abilities kind of adapt to the soul and her she gains additional scaling to the stat the soul gives. Like (balance might be hard and some ideas should not be) (also those i mention are all meant for her Ult, out of ult weaker ofc) - Inferno Soul: gives additional AD/AP Scaling; her q burns the target (AoT); her w deals more damage and burns; her e now gains aoe; AoT does not stack, like liandrys - Ocean Soul: gives additional HP Scaling; her q heals her; Her W slows enemies and heals allies; Her e does less damage but leaves behind an aoe puddle that slows - Mountain Soul: gives additional Armor/MR Scaling; her q stuns; her w grants her bonus armor/mr; her e fires a boulder which stuns and slows - Storm Soul: gives additional AH Scaling; her q pushes enemies back; her w is much larger and give Movement Speed; Her E just knocks enemies up and keeps them up for some moments - Chemtech Soul: Lifesteal scaling; her q does current hp damage; her w poisons enemies (synergy with casso); her e creates a field like graves W - Hextech Soul: AS Scaling; her q does aoe; Her W boosts her AS and AH; her e creating a straight line slow Viktor ult with less damage - Elder Soul: Scales of every stat mentioned before but less; her Q creates an aoe burn; her W lets her fly over walls, her E is a continious breath in a cone. After elder buff is gone so is the super form Just my idea, I'd love something similar even if much less complicated
I fully understand redrawing a character over and over again. I am creating my own designs for transformers characters and, dispite recently working on my second Optimus desighn, I am already doing it for a third time. Fully understand! Besides, all of your designs are better than the last!
Terrestrial Dragon Shyvana can also symbolize her Wings being "clipped", her heritage stripped away from her, both by her and society. Maybe imagine her ult having a variation that can fly, that symbolizes her finally claiming she is a Dragon, through and through
While watching your dragon forms ideas I approached a conclusion similar to what you came up at 36:11 Since the design of 30:15 retained much of the original Shyvana, I could clearly see it as a manifestation of the Fire Rift, and the one that appeared at 31:45 evoked much more of a sturdier physical read, something like a buffalo or a bison, something I could see evoking the Earth Rift, living up to the idea of enhanced defenses! That brought me the idea that Shyvana's dragon form could drastically change depending on the elemental Rift she's playing, I would go as far as provide some minor fluff to each form if she manages to get Elder Dragon Of course that would never happen inside the game, something like that would mean six different models for her dragon forms, add that same amount for each skin, and we both know that's just ludacris amounts of work for one champion, but hey, we're are not shackled like Riot to that approach, we can fly as high as we want, because the sun is as far as we want it to be Again, coming up with different dragon forms, thinking about the different enhancements each one of them would provide Shyvana sounds like so much fun Anyway, great video and I really liked that idea of the hair being unleashed from the braid as she transforms, the wild mane made her dragon form look menacing and powerful, although I kinda agree it looks like a primal beast rather then a highly intelligent being, that said, I lack the knowledge of how to make a fire-breathing beast look smart 😆
I have two criticisms, one objective one subjective. I think there is a lot of visual clutter, a more slick, clean look on a brawler character like her would work much better. Think of it like, Sett, Braum etc. and maybe even more feral since she is part dragon. For the personal opinion, as a muscle mommy enjoyer, she should rock some thick thighs that can crush heads 😅
Legit love all of the design decisions made for this new rendition of her, and how in your little story she breaks free and goes off and away with a potential return. Looking at your design decisions and of what I still recall of the story as it is right now, and your story too, there are some possible interpretations I sorta saw and thought of that I think fit in well. As we have seen at the end of Mageseeker it seems Jarvan is now hard at work trying to make his father's vision a reality and make mages actual proper citizens (for a bit of context to those who don't know during Lux's comic, yes there are comics, Jarvan the 3rd was murdered and he had a letter that was meant for his son, our Jarvan, and at the end of the comics he burnt this letter out of frustration and we didn't know what it was... until Mageseeker where we discover it was actually about ending the Mageseeker order and the senseless hatred towards mages), and if we take Legends of Runeterra as canon we know she basically is apart of this little squad and these folks do respect her. So in this we both know that Jarvan still cares for her, and there are still people in Demacia that did not see her as that monster but as a companion that was possessed and not herself during the Ruination. So in this what could be taken from this design? Well, while she unleashed herself from her imposed shackles and went on to... somewhere, to be closer to her draconic side, to be more herself, I think we can take, for example, her braids as a sign of self care, that while she may be half dragon is embracing her draconic self more, deep down she still feels as human as everyone she has interacted with, and chooses to do so, even if she was being mistreated until this point. But not just that, the braids can also tell us she practices self control and restraint. She knows how dangerous she can be, and that she's not simply going to unleash her power so carelessly, and that perhaps, despite being seen as a monster, she doesn't really wanna be seen as one, so in her human form she chooses to restrain herself in some capacity, but now she also has much better control of her draconic powers and expresses them much more freely when compared to before. She's no longer a beast with wild power, she's a being who's sure of herself. Then the chains and shackles. The shackles are still there, and the chains once attached to them are broken off, one can read it as her breaking free from the constraints and hatred of Demacia, however the shackles are still there, a reminder that there are still those in Demacia who will not accept her no matter what (hey, getting rid of an institution that has existed for centuries that was responsible for chasing down people just because they were born with magic powers and was responsible for the deep hatred the civilians felt for said people is no easy task, it would take years before that hatred is gone realistically speaking). But this leads us to the chains on her sides. They are not broken, but they are also not constricting or restraining her, they're flowing freely on her. To me this could be read as chains that bind her. To what? To the more humane side of Demacia, to those who have shown care to her, to her companions, and to her possibly maybe perhaps lover Jarvan. Yes, Demacis as it is is a crap place for anyone born with magic, but if we look at the history of Demacia up to that point we can tell that before there was a spirit of comradery and loyalty. The story Morgana tells in Mageseeker, and the way Poppy behaves (remember, Yordles take on aspects of the culture they find themselves in for long periods of time) tell us that there are genuinely good people in Demacia. And then upon Shyvana's return, sure it would be very shaky. She was hurt deeply by how she was treated, by the city that took her in, and by the one she thougjt was her closest companion. And this is sorta me but I don't believe it's all so black and white, and that there is a potential for redemption for Demacia, especially with Jarvan at the helm after the events of Mageseeker. But thats just my silly lil interpretation of her story based on your design.
In other words, your Shyvana is what they were trying to do (and failed) with Syndra - someone breaking free of their constraints and owning their true nature and power (and sexuality).
you could make new shyvana everyday for a year and I'd watch everyday. I don't even play this game or draw! I really love the confidence and swagger of this iteration. That pose just works so well. I also really like this iteration of the dragon form. I feel like it captures the ferocity you were describing so well!
This is definitely the best version of Shyvana you've done, and regarding her borderline feral nature she's embraced as part of her new backstory, I really think the Wolf Dragon form definitely evokes that more bestial bature. If I may make some suggestions, perhaps the Wolf Dragon could have a bit of a longer snout (5-10% longer), maybe make her hind feet like eagle talons, or look closer to dragon feet. Somehow, they still seem too human, although from the design, they look more plantigrade than digitigrade, so that might be why.
as an avid enjoyer of dragon shaped characters, this works really well! also said bokksu order instead of sugoi mart at the end there jack, phenomenal work
i love these shyvana redesigns! but it would also be interesting to see you redesign an existing skin for her with your design as the base :D on the drake idea... i think it would be nice to incorporate the skull design of the drakes into the arm design.
They playtested the dragon soul idea with smolder, and found it "felt bad". They found the randomly determined soul meant players could randomly not get the soul they they needed/wanted.
0:50 | Groaning? I live your Shyvanna Glazing, man. I love it when people in the (league) community share what they love about their champions. It's like being back in the playground with friends, asking them what abilities they'd like to have, and live that power Fantasy through these champions.
The human design looks fantastic. The shape of the wolf-like dragon also fits very well with the human form. There is probably only one thing I would criticize: the color palette. It immediately reminded me of Smolder. However, the dragons found in Camavor are a separate species from those found near Demacia. At least the first dragon design, which follows the League template, falls into this category.
I really like the more bulky design for her dragon form! It fits that she is a fighter and not flying - though it would be interesting to see her flying as a dragon with the gameplay update (besides charging in with ult)
i don’t play league and i haven’t even watched arcane (yet) but this channel has gotten me a little invested in the shyvana saga! she really does seem like an awesome character, and i hope the official vgu is everything you’re looking for!
I know nothing about League of Legends, and I have no prior connection to this character, but I have eyes, and this looks amazing. The breaking armor and dangling chains really give her that style of a unbound beast, and the shifting dragon maw-shaped arm flames are just glorious, I'd love to play a character with that on any game
I wasn't always a fan of your shyvana's redesigns, but this one... OOOH this one, I LOVE her. I really feel like this one capture the essence of what can make Shyvana cool, and make it actually cool. Like, for exemple : the gauntlets. The idea of these looking like a dragon jaws was cool, and like an essential component of the character, but they looked kinda goofy. Then comes your redesign, and BAM it IS cool (+ the idea of them transforming with the drakes in game would be incredible, as it's again a cool premise in the game but kinda flavorless as it's not really noticeable, at least as a casual player of LoL. HOWEVER we have to admit that something like that, which I find awesome, would not really get Shyvana popularity as it would mean that every game is a bit of a gamble). Something I really like is the hair : keeping her braid that I think is a core element of her design while ALSO giving it a wilder look, with the explanation you did about it
I just wanted to say thank you Subjectively team for all the years of inspiring me to actually do better and improve! I started watching you guys when I was barely a teen and the years just flew by. Looking forward to many more years 🖤
Thank you for putting so much effort to the visual design, im a Shyvana OTP here and i always wanna a rework, a hope that they don't dissapoint us, i wanna feel that im playing a real dragon. Thank you to all the people interested in making Shyvana OP. ;D
In total honesty, i love almost everything in this video. Except Shyvana’s dragon form. She looks to be a manticore or a devilish bull more than a dragon. I think if her silhouette revealed a little more of her neck, she would show more as a dragon.
i had an idea and since you and someone else from the past mentioned to "Write it down" this is me doing it. XD my Personal Idea For a Reworked Shyvana R that incorporates some amount of flight instead of just a "Leap" either something similar to Pantheon where she Leaps into the Air and Similar to Galio lands somewhere she can choose where she will be on a Timer in her Dragon form (Timer being her Fury meter) of course she might as well keep her "Suck them all up around the snout" aspect if she lands on Champions or enemy's in general. The other idea could be that she will turn into a Dragon become untargetable in the Air with twice the movespeed or maybe 30% more than usual, and can choose where to land to fight in dragon form or just fly away. (which may be a stupid way to utilize the R but you do you if you do) if you have seen Ratatoskr from Smite, something like that. to summarize his ult lets him jump on imaginary twigs of Yggdrasil above the actual play map and he can technically choose where to "Come in like a wrecking ball"
If you ever wanna continue this series it’ll be really cool if you tackle some of the skins so they match her new design and lore. It would also be really cool to see you create a skin wholly new based solely off the new design whereas her existing skin are stuff meeting some sort of already set precedent.
I don't know if you were spying on me and my friend's discord calls, Jack, but I have to say it: your Shyvana rework is EXTREMELY close to the one I designed with a friend 5 years ago, down to the lore, J4 trying to suppress Shyvana's draconic nature (not with a petricite armor, but medication made out of petricite, overloading her body with... basically mini magic batteries) and even the kit and stats changing according to the Rift dragons (she would only change her elemental affinity according to the map's dragon tho and would acquire a final form, an Elder Dragon form if she killed the Elder Dragon). And all I have to say is that, I just really like your rework! :D
With her leaving at the end of mageseeker, i really hope the VGU js a story update rather than a whole rewrite. Shyvana is a beautiful representation of someone caught in the two worlds who refuse her and i really hope they dont keep her stuck as a dog to the crown It'd be amazing if she sought out Morgana, letting go of her own shackles
I really really like the lore direction you went in. To me the energy of Shyvana in the Riot concept art is more appealing, because she comes off as less grim and serious. But that's personal preference really. The chains are great and unique, dragon is a huge update and would probably look way less weird ingame. The dragon face on her armor seems a little on the nose, I think it's better to imply the dragon through details like the skirt-tail.
Brooo that design slays. I love both her human and dragon forms you made! I'm not fond of the weapons tho'. And that story's so cool, it would completely fit League's lore. Great job as always!
I find this so interesting as it’s basically the opposite of what the rework team said the concept was for her rework. Insane job as always man keep up the good work!
So first, I do want to say, this is probably my favorite “human form” of Shyvana that I have seen you do. It looks incredible, especially in the first pose with the “come at me, I dare you” attitude. I am not an actual character designer, so take my critiques with some salt. However with the Dragon form, there is definitely some things that work super well, specifically the the giant unleashed mane of hair, is very striking visually and works as a fantastic way to set here apart from the Elemental Dragons in game. But there are some things I have critiques for. Probably my biggest critique I think is the wings. I would love for them to be lot more present when she is terrestrial. I don’t think the giant elbow spikes tell me that this is something that flies. Admittedly sometimes that can work for a character design. The Kaiju Otachi from Pacific Rim is a good example of this, where her hiding the wings worked as a good shock moment when she first unfurled them. But this new expanded Shyvana from the new story you wrote (which was also great by the way), doesn’t feel like the type that would want to hide her wings, but instead fully display them and show off her uncaged power. Could even be a cool opportunity to play with display features on them as well. Looking at the quick flying form that you did, I would also want to see a lot larger of wings in the way of them not being ‘armpit wings’. Instead of the membrane reducing by the time it reaches the shoulder, I would like to see it go all the way down her torso, possibly even onto the legs a little. As a few examples, I think a lot of the “House of Dragons” dragon designs (not at all them) do this very well. An interesting and unique way it was done was with King Ghidorah in Godzilla : King of the Monsters (2019), with them having these almost extra finger-like limbs coming out of the torso to help provide reference the way the wings looked in with the original Toho King Ghidorah. I think just general size increase in the wings would help as well. With the current dragon form design, making the wings a lot of visual element (maybe in a way that compliments the hair), would add a lot more “dragon” into the design that I think is a little missing. Right now, it reads a bit more “big cat” than dragon, at least to me anyways. Other than that though, I really enjoyed the video!
as someone who is desperately hoping riot takes a similar direction to your designs for shyvana I for one love seeing more shyvana videos. the league videos are some of my favourites in general honestly, alongside the enigmorph stuff
Like how positive these are. Would you please consider doing a video or at least a guide on how you use your brush packs or perhaps how to get the most out of them. Thank you!
“Shyvana wake up, it’s time for your annual Subjectively redesign”
She’s so sick of us by now
For real😂
Hey gotta get ready for that Arcane drip whenever Riot gets to her universe
"Yes honey"
The petricite armour turning from white to red as it becomes saturated with dragonfire would be a really good in-game indicator of how close Shyvana is to being able to use her ult again; like how you can see when Gnar's about to hulk out.
Yes! I was thinking that too
If Shyvana has 1000 fans, Jack is one of them. If Shyvana has one fan that is Jack. If Shyvana has no fans, Jack is unalive. For eternity, Jack will support SHYVANA.
Un-uhlaive? UN-UHLAIVE? Ma'am, that man has been killed. He has been MUHDUHED. To DEATH.
Oh I wish I had the extra cash to commission someone to render an in-game model for a Shyvana redesign. The Nickyboi Cass came out so well
Don't forget Arthis with Nocturne.
Taylor Jensen and his Cho' Gath
We're really the pushing the "metaphor" part of the "queer metaphor" that is the treatment of magic in Demacia, eh?
Trans awareness week Shyvana 👀
Never and I mean NEVER apologize for talking about your dragon woman blorbo. I know very little about league (I am devoted to Fiddlesticks and Fiddlesticks only) and yet your videos talking about Shyvanna are some of my favorites. The love you have for the character is contagious!
Respect to another Fiddlesticks lover ✊
@Subjectively hell yeah ✨🤝
@@Subjectively for real tho did some rioters reached out and said that they considered mean what you said in previous videos?
Hi, I know this is a bit strange to ask since I don't even play lol anymore, but I loved fiddlesticks after the rework and I wanted to know if it was just me who didn't know how to use your scarecrows, like, do you have a smart way to use them? that one? For me, that was either used to scare someone into casting a spell or pretending to be a ward on a random lene, what's another good way to use them?
@@bolacha7645 his Effigies can be used to bait spells and if you play Support, you can plant one in lane and wait for the laners to kill it with R.
Effigies also sweep vision, so he's VERY strong at vision control, as he needs it for his Terrify Passive.
i know that when her VGU drops, we will either get another redesign in mourning on what she was or a redesign in celebration of what she has become
I do have faith that the official VGU will be an upgrade. But there is a 100% chance that some people won’t like it, no matter what it looks like
I adore the idea of having Shyvana locked up in a tower until she goes Dragon Mode and breaks herself out. It's the classic tale of a princess in a tower, guarded by a dragon, who gets saved by a brave knight, but it turns all three (princess, dragon, knight) into one character. A woman loved by a prince but locked up for being a dragon frees herself with her dragon powers. Brilliant.
Said it last Shyvana video and I'll say it now: we can absolutely thank Karlach for bashing down the door and making everyone realize "Oh wait, no, we want a giant fire lady."
I'm so glad tou didn't give up on her. *YOU* made me care about her, Jack! I'm so happy for you, and god I can't wait to see her
I thinks it's about time we open a pool to bet on how many times will Subjectively rework Shyvana before Riot does
I want to bet 0 more times because I want that VGU so bad
@@Subjectively Thank you so much 🥹💖 I'll need that luck 😂
I love this, especially the changing of her loyalities, especially because it's something alot of people can relate, trying to force yourself into mold to be 'acceptable' for people whose opinions should never come before your right to simply exist and then breaking away from it to regain your agency and accept yourself for who you are.
After watching every Subjectively Shyvana VGU as they've come out for... what is it now, years? This has to be my favorite. I love the story continuation, and the attitude of this one. The confidence, the shapes, the surprising positivity in the face of primal, draconic rage. It's beautiful. Simply beautiful.
After all these Shyvana designs, I'd be interested to see you take a crack at her "boyfriend," Jarvan IV
Jarvan also needs an update, for sure. I'd love for him to be a little more dimensional than just "the guy who shouts DEMACIA when he ults".
@@Subjectively what are your thoughts about his character in the Mageseeker game?
@@Subjectively Jarvan IV is known to be one of my favorite, so please do him justice
Of course it's taking forever, they're too busy firing artists and making new scam tiers of cosmetics to milk money.
Found it astoundingly funny that some people really prefer Shyvanna to be a generic anime girl when everything showcases her as so much more
Edit: LOVED what you did with the lore.
Hell yeah.
YES! Exactly, as long as you're noticing the growth, you are doing something right as an artist. Keep it up!
This person gets it 🫵
I really appreciate the respect you give to riot employees.
Your appreciation in appreciated ❤️ some people are certainly sick of my Shyvana redesigns
Oh my LAWD she's fine
Also I love how the armour becomes the scales for the dragon form
I always believe the vgu for shyvana should go to sona as the mageseeker game made her irrelivant
I like the elemental symmetry in her magic claws, how fire and water curve inwards while earth and air curve in
26:45 the "wyrm" design looks really interesting I think.
However, in your in-game model design, the chains - which were my favourite part of it representing, as they do, the way she's been chained by society both metaphorically and physically and now she has broken then reincorporated them into who she is - kind of disappeared into the armour, they aren't defined they just look like yellow accents on the edge of the armour if ygm
i absolutely LOVE this redesign, HOWEVER! i wouldve liked her hair in the ingame concept (35:06) to be as dark as it is in the first concept, as it blends slightly with the skin and backround
this is amazingly done, absolutely something id love to see as her actual rework lmao
Except that he just ignored The Mageseeker tho.
This is my absolute favorite of your redesigns of Shyvana. She looks perfect. As soon as I saw that thumbnail I felt the presences of the exact person you've been describing to us all these years. She's perfect.
Had some fun ideas for voicelines:
Smolder: wow! Another dragon! Hi
Shvyanna: your not.. warry of me little one?
Smolder: why should I, let's go burn them to the ground.
Shvyanna: huh, the young are always so quick to action, even as a dragon.
Jarvin: I just want you to know.. I do miss you.
Shvyanna: just- focus on the battle.
Leblanc: you know. I could help you with your goal.
Shvyanna: and have more claws pulling me to the ground?
Jarvins death,
Shvyanna: I hope you know. I never wanted this.
Shvyanna death lines-
- You only free me from my form
- father- I can see you-
-my blaze will never go out
It also gives me a greater appreciation for league character designs as someone who has no plans to ever play League I now thanks to you and others like you have formed an opinion on basically every champion and their skins and now a list I keep of all my favorites that I still keep updated 😊
the part of the claws changing with certain dragons was 10/10
Wake up babe new Subjectively just dropped
Could work as a standalone short, or it could function as a C or D plot for an episode or two of the actual show, which adds some stakes and gets the plot rolling.
the image in all fours cracking the earth was the best.
On the time frame detail that’s so important. I’m not in the industry yet but from what I’ve heard from riot people I’ve talked to the steps you’ve done in this video are a significantly truncated version of character design for a project that size. It’s a great video and design, just putting into perspective for anyone wondering.
This is definetly my favorite of your Shyvana concepts so far, i absolutely adore the new direction and design
I am looking... respectfully 👀
8:45 this part is really it, the concept designs they put out are absolutely amazing and you can tell how painfully boiled down they get
ur VGU ideas are always interesting, and the visuals are awesome too!
I think people who don't play league probably enjoy these videos more than people who actually do play league (that's because league players are miserable all the time)
👉😎👉
Also, I like your gameplay changes for Shyvana. I did a VGU for her kit a few years ago and if you are interested, I'd love to share it with you here
35:15 I think it would be better if her passive is:
You deal 20% more damage to Dragons and you take 20% less damage (Her already existing passive, so she can kill the dragons early to gain soul sooner)
But no additional armor or ability power, instead
that after she gets soul, her abilities kind of adapt to the soul and her she gains additional scaling to the stat the soul gives.
Like (balance might be hard and some ideas should not be) (also those i mention are all meant for her Ult, out of ult weaker ofc)
- Inferno Soul: gives additional AD/AP Scaling; her q burns the target (AoT); her w deals more damage and burns; her e now gains aoe; AoT does not stack, like liandrys
- Ocean Soul: gives additional HP Scaling; her q heals her; Her W slows enemies and heals allies; Her e does less damage but leaves behind an aoe puddle that slows
- Mountain Soul: gives additional Armor/MR Scaling; her q stuns; her w grants her bonus armor/mr; her e fires a boulder which stuns and slows
- Storm Soul: gives additional AH Scaling; her q pushes enemies back; her w is much larger and give Movement Speed; Her E just knocks enemies up and keeps them up for some moments
- Chemtech Soul: Lifesteal scaling; her q does current hp damage; her w poisons enemies (synergy with casso); her e creates a field like graves W
- Hextech Soul: AS Scaling; her q does aoe; Her W boosts her AS and AH; her e creating a straight line slow Viktor ult with less damage
- Elder Soul: Scales of every stat mentioned before but less; her Q creates an aoe burn; her W lets her fly over walls, her E is a continious breath in a cone. After elder buff is gone so is the super form
Just my idea, I'd love something similar even if much less complicated
I fully understand redrawing a character over and over again. I am creating my own designs for transformers characters and, dispite recently working on my second Optimus desighn, I am already doing it for a third time. Fully understand! Besides, all of your designs are better than the last!
1:22 Good point! I'll start!
I am better than everyone in the comments at every single discipline of art, including Peruvian tapestry.
Can’t wait to see your shawls!
Terrestrial Dragon Shyvana can also symbolize her Wings being "clipped", her heritage stripped away from her, both by her and society. Maybe imagine her ult having a variation that can fly, that symbolizes her finally claiming she is a Dragon, through and through
While watching your dragon forms ideas I approached a conclusion similar to what you came up at 36:11
Since the design of 30:15 retained much of the original Shyvana, I could clearly see it as a manifestation of the Fire Rift, and the one that appeared at 31:45 evoked much more of a sturdier physical read, something like a buffalo or a bison, something I could see evoking the Earth Rift, living up to the idea of enhanced defenses!
That brought me the idea that Shyvana's dragon form could drastically change depending on the elemental Rift she's playing, I would go as far as provide some minor fluff to each form if she manages to get Elder Dragon
Of course that would never happen inside the game, something like that would mean six different models for her dragon forms, add that same amount for each skin, and we both know that's just ludacris amounts of work for one champion, but hey, we're are not shackled like Riot to that approach, we can fly as high as we want, because the sun is as far as we want it to be
Again, coming up with different dragon forms, thinking about the different enhancements each one of them would provide Shyvana sounds like so much fun
Anyway, great video and I really liked that idea of the hair being unleashed from the braid as she transforms, the wild mane made her dragon form look menacing and powerful, although I kinda agree it looks like a primal beast rather then a highly intelligent being, that said, I lack the knowledge of how to make a fire-breathing beast look smart 😆
23:30 idk about that! it just changed from the "friends to lovers" to "friends to enemies to lovers" tag!
The "I AM UNLEASHED!" Shyv quote really do be hitting different now
you could make new shyvana everyday for a year and I'd watch everyday. I don't even play this game or draw! I really love the confidence and swagger of this iteration. That pose just works so well. I also really like this iteration of the dragon form. I feel like it captures the ferocity you were describing so well!
i think this is my favorite version of shyvana
This is definitely the best version of Shyvana you've done, and regarding her borderline feral nature she's embraced as part of her new backstory, I really think the Wolf Dragon form definitely evokes that more bestial bature.
If I may make some suggestions, perhaps the Wolf Dragon could have a bit of a longer snout (5-10% longer), maybe make her hind feet like eagle talons, or look closer to dragon feet. Somehow, they still seem too human, although from the design, they look more plantigrade than digitigrade, so that might be why.
as an avid enjoyer of dragon shaped characters, this works really well! also said bokksu order instead of sugoi mart at the end there jack, phenomenal work
Oh that’s a whoopsies, gotta put an annotation over that. Thanks for the heads up!
I am totally normal for this Shyvana redesign, yessir!
[Insert Image of person gnawing on a pillow]
i love these shyvana redesigns! but it would also be interesting to see you redesign an existing skin for her with your design as the base :D
on the drake idea... i think it would be nice to incorporate the skull design of the drakes into the arm design.
i gottta say, i like the idea of a wake up burning power for shivana, like... the petricite armor literally burns
That concept on the right has some Persona vibes that get me hyped!
I love the Dragon form you came up with so much!
Clicked for the thumbnail, stayed for the lore and insane skill showed here
i don’t play league and i haven’t even watched arcane (yet) but this channel has gotten me a little invested in the shyvana saga! she really does seem like an awesome character, and i hope the official vgu is everything you’re looking for!
Something I really like is the hair : keeping her braid that I think is a core element of her design while ALSO giving it a wilder look, with the explanation you did about it
I love how muscly you made her, also the different powers for killing different drakes is a cool idea
Thank you to all the people interested in making Shyvana OP. ;D
“Fine, I’ll do it myself. Again.” intensifies.
XD
my Personal Idea For a Reworked Shyvana R that incorporates some amount of flight instead of just a "Leap"
either something similar to Pantheon where she Leaps into the Air and Similar to Galio lands somewhere she can choose where she will be on a Timer in her Dragon form (Timer being her Fury meter) of course she might as well keep her "Suck them all up around the snout" aspect if she lands on Champions or enemy's in general.
This came right on time to give me inspiration when i just began designing a new half dragon oc
gotta say I love your version of shyvannas lore, made me interested in her when I never really have been (like you intended)
Shyvana is a beautiful representation of someone caught in the two worlds who refuse her and i really hope they dont keep her stuck as a dog to the crown
It'd be amazing if she sought out Morgana, letting go of her own shackles
I really really like the lore direction you went in. To me the energy of Shyvana in the Riot concept art is more appealing, because she comes off as less grim and serious. But that's personal preference really.
The chains are great and unique, dragon is a huge update and would probably look way less weird ingame. The dragon face on her armor seems a little on the nose, I think it's better to imply the dragon through details like the skirt-tail.
Brooo that design slays. I love both her human and dragon forms you made! I'm not fond of the weapons tho'. And that story's so cool, it would completely fit League's lore. Great job as always!
As someone who has been here since the first Shyvana redesign, I just gotta say...
Can't wait till the next one
The video stars at 17:00
bro said we groanin when we clappin
love your fun time with redisgns
Coming back to this after news of the rework getting effectively scrapped
At least in one universe we got this awesome vgu
as someone who is desperately hoping riot takes a similar direction to your designs for shyvana I for one love seeing more shyvana videos.
the league videos are some of my favourites in general honestly, alongside the enigmorph stuff
Like how positive these are. Would you please consider doing a video or at least a guide on how you use your brush packs or perhaps how to get the most out of them. Thank you!
You’re not the first person to ask! I’ll put something together to help with brushes
@@Subjectively Thank you so much!
you're so invested and now so am I! good luck on the vgu dragon lady
This looks like "Dragon Oracle UDYR" xD.
I appreciate the lore and gauntlets/effects put I think that "Default Shyvana Splash Art" is her peak design.
Jarvan the 4th ending magic racism by marrying a dragon muscle mommy. This is the way Riot games.
