  • This is a rather personal issue for me, but I want to share it with you all. Maybe you are in a similar situation so this might help you as well. You see this habit is a big problem, not just in Thailand, but in every part of the world. My health is not where it needs to be, so this is why I quit drinking alcohol. Again. At least for a few months, so I can focus on my health. I love good cocktails, good wine and good food. However I have not been taking care of myself as well as I should. This is my journey to get healthier, lose weight and just feel better. Alcohol has not caused me problems in my life, but it has interfered with some of my weight loss journey. Join me as I explain why I quit drinking alcohol while living here in Thailand. IF YOU NEED HELP, PLEASE SEE THE RESOURCES BELOW.

Carnivore did the exact opposite for me. I was dry for two years and then tried carnivore diet. My desire to drink was something out of this world. The cravings are the worse that I ever felt. I quit cigarettes, alcohol, and cocaine and I was fine. As soon as I went carnivore I want to binge drink. Weird and sucks at the same time.

Social drinking was my issue but after a while I knew it had to change and now it’s only on weekends and I try not to drink until 8-9pm . Gone are the days of keeping up with my mates now it’s slow and steady. When on holiday in Thailand I stick to the same rules sometimes it’s hard but tbh most of the time now I’m happy with a ginger ale . Good thing it there are plenty of soft drinks in the bars . All my life I have dealt with depression and I discovered very early on in my life that alcohol makes my depression just horrible. Just a few cocktails with friends and next thing I know I'm feeling dreary and sad. I don't have time for dreary and sad. One interesting thing is people assume that I'm a recovering alcoholic when I tell them that I don't drink. Nope, it's just a choice I made a long time ago. Hi Serg! I've stopped drinking for about 4 years now. I don't have a problem with alcohol so I may have the occasional beer or cocktail at social events. I used to be a binge drinker who would drink a 12-pack of beer on Friday and another 12-pack on Saturday with friends. The years and years of binge drinking caused me to develop excruciatingly painful gout! Sometimes it would be so severe that I had to use crutches for several weeks! Even when I was on anti-gout medication, I would still drink but no more than 5 beers. Eventually, I decided to quit because I didn't like the way I felt the next day after drinking. It felt like there was poison running through my veins. Now at age 55, I feel better than I did at age 30 binge drinking! I have cut out starchy carbs, exercise almost every day, and eat only one or two meals per day, basically, Intermittent Fasting.

Whether it's food or alcohol consumption When you practice moderation from the start it's a lot easier to monitor so you don't get yourself into the deep end but good for you In trying to completely distance yourself from it.

About a year ago I changed my way of living completely. I keep strict times when I eat the first time of the day and when the last time (called intermittent fasting). I didn't stop entirely drinking alcohol, but I drink maybe once a week one glass. Only once a month I go with two friends for a nice diner. I'm the designated driver and therefore I don't drink anything. The two other guys enjoy several glasses of wine that evening. But... we go early and come home early... around 9 pm. All three of us have a long time relation with a Thai and don't need to hang out in girly bars....
I think if you are the type that thinks social life is about going out at night, then this is not the lifestyle for you. I socialize in daytime and am most evenings at home, enjoying a good movie or play a good game with my VR headset. Since we live in the countryside, south of Hua Hin, we go to bed early and get up early. I lost over 15 kilo in the first few months and maintain my weight.
Yes, I know it sounds kind of boring lifestyle, but each his own life, right?
I wish you good luck with your diet... losing weight is not that difficult. You just need to stop eating in between meals and never at night, even if you feel hungry.... that hunger will stop one day and then you ask yourself how you could eat in the middle of the night.

One of my weaknesses - I have two😉
First three months here I was drinking far too much ie 5/6 drinks most nights - most expats just laughed at me and said that's not a problem🤔
Went to Laos for a month, broke the habit - now have one or two drinks three or four days a week - which I'm comfortable with😉
Now, I cycle most mornings and swim everyday plus a few gym workouts each week also lots of walking...
My life is much more gainful here and I'm much happier...
Yes, alcohol is a depressant and it is toxic...
But I still go out very occasionally and have a big night with lots of laughs😂 Always have a great time!!But definitely suffer the next day😔

Yeah. I used to drink seldom, now it seems I've quit entirely without even realizing I had. Been ... at least a year maybe two? I do not miss it. And yes I do socialize as well or better without it. 😊

Ur lucky. I discovered after twenty years of overdoing it that the reason I'd been overdoing it was that I had social anxiety. Now I don't drink for alcohol related health reasons, but the social anxiety is still with me. It's a real bugger to kick because it just drains you of energy in social situations so you end up avoiding them. But of course to overcome it you need to embrace social situations: where most people have a drink in hand.

I’m the same, the only good thing about Covid was bars closing and I couldn’t go out. I’ve not had a drink since lockdown began a few years ago😀
I wasn’t a big drinker but I did binge at the weekends and then I was feeling like shit until the Wednesday.
Staying off it is the best thing I ever done

I rarely drink alcohol either. Maybe 3 Times a year. It takes too much energy and for me my sleep gets really bad, especially if I drink red wine. So yes, life is better without alcohol. Sometimes at parties is enough.

I don't drink much. Every blue moon. 😊. I agree. When I drink, I feel groggy the next day, and I feel lazy the next day.

Alcohol increased my anxiety so I stopped. It's better left alone. I am fine with a glass of wine as it has better health benefits.

Thailand is one of the highest alcohol consumption per capita in the world. I truly hope you kicked this habit out permanently. Good luck Serg.

Thank you very much. I really don’t have any intentions to start again anytime soon, but I also don’t intend to never drink again. I don’t feel that I have an unhealthy relationship with alcohol, but right now I’m trying to get healthier, it’s best that I avoid it

That’s very true. For me, it’s more of an issue with the food, not so much the alcohol. However, when I cut out the alcohol, I also tend to eat a lot healthier.
