  • I finally got to experience a traditional Thai wedding today. I gotta tell you, Thailand weddings are wild, this one had a bed ceremony and even a 1,350,000 dowry! The day started off at 6:39 in the morning (9 is considered a lucky number). I take you through all the morning ceremonies, including a very interesting bed ceremony and the handing over of a 1,350,000 dowry to the bride's parents. With over 500 people in attendance, this was a huge wedding. Many of the ceremonies were truly romantic and wild to me. I have never seen such a unique wedding in my life, and I am so thankful I got to be part of this amazing life event for these two beautiful people. Every part of this wedding was so interesting and I am so excited to share a rare glimpse into a traditional Thai wedding. The evening ceremony was a huge party. So many people, so much food, so much music. What a fantastic event!

In fact, there is a much bigger wedding than this. In the middle class at Mueang Luang Thai people attach great importance to ceremonies.

This brings me back to when my wife and I got married in Nonthabury almost ten years ago. Nearly 300 "strangers" were there to help us celebrate (along with just one other farang!). It was truly one of many "National Geographic moments" I've been involved in, since discovering the Kingdom. Lucky for us - my wife's mother returned half of the sinsod! Thanks again, Serg - for another awesome video!

For my wedding, there were 3 different ways in one day.
At the monk hospital : With Thai ceremony, the monks prayed for us best luck and we offered food to the monks and donated money to the sicked monks.
The close family and friends blessed us with holy water.
At home : Chinese style ; offered tea to my parents and family to get their consent and get the Red envelopes with money as gifts. After that had a small family party.
At the restaurant later in the evening : Wedding party.
Result ; Almost break down late at night.🤣

These are a local, countryside style of marriage. I had gone to my cousin wedding and it kinda like this too, but not this extravagance.
Normally they tend to do very simple in countryside lower class, very big in countryside middle class, simple and small in Bangkok middle class because no one got time to do it that big, or go super extra if you are in Bangkok and got shit load of money.
10:09 about the money, yes, in the past they really give all of it to the bride side, because of "woman do housework and taking care of child" smth like that. But now it is kind of show off to the people in the wedding that the groom can taking care of the bride.
Sometime if you are not wealth as fuck and really want to show off, you just borrow some gold and money from someone to place there for the photo. But if you didn't care that much, you can use your real money, show it off nicely, give them all to the bride family. Then usually they will give the new couple all the money to start a new live because now woman didn't just stay at home and do all the housework anymore.
11:18 Ring exchange is normal too, everyone does that, even back then 30-40 years ago afaik. Thai just mixing it all and come up with this, Buddhism thing+local ghost thing+Chinese style dinner, western style ring exchange/flower throwing/couple clothes, anything that you think it's nice.

First - love your bearded look, Serg. I've been to several Thai weddings (by my age) and I've been to weddings in Uthai Thani. This rather quiet town doesn't have many choices of wedding function facilities in hotels and having a wedding ceremony at home with community kitchens is popular and very warm and funfilled. Thanks for sharing the moment. BTW do you understand the trick (naughty humor) when they play with mortar and pestle?

I love Thai weddings, whole day celebrations 🍾. Maybe they do it differently than others that I have been to but the markings on the head are normally the bride's father from my understanding. The monk would not be allowed to touch a woman to put the slurry on the forehead.

    • @LifewithSerg

You might be right! I did not witness who put the markings on them. Good point.

@LifewithSerg the gates he had to go through were so much easier than mine at my wedding. I was made to do tasks to get through each one. I had to spell my wife's name in Thai, do 20 press ups (in a suit in 35° heat, sorry, i do not do Fahrenheit) sing a love song, amongst other things.
Great craic but he seemed to get off easy!

LMAO. so here’s a funny story. my friends, grandmother, the girl who explained the bed ceremony, thinks that she and I are dating. My friend told her grandmother that we have been friends for almost 3 years and have never dated. However, her grandmother doesn’t believe it, and has told all the women in their circle to stay away from me. So needless to say, I am off-limits to most of these women when I go there. It’s actually quite comical.
